0:00 - 0:04So I'm passionate about technology
-
0:02 - 0:07because I believe technology is an
-
0:04 - 0:10extension of human creativity, Today our
-
0:07 - 0:12host Jason Silva is giving a free talk
-
0:09 - 0:13at a local university, Here's the amazing
-
0:11 - 0:15thing about technology, but pay attention
-
0:13 - 0:17because while these people think they're
-
0:15 - 0:20here to see Jason give a presentation on
-
0:17 - 0:22technology, Technology evolves
-
0:19 - 0:23exponentially, they're actually the
-
0:22 - 0:25subject of a social experiment and
-
0:23 - 0:28you're about to see how far these people
-
0:25 - 0:29will go just to fit in with a crowd, The
-
0:27 - 0:31smartphone that you guys have in your
-
0:29 - 0:34pocket is actually a million times
-
0:31 - 0:36cheaper, a million times smaller, and a
-
0:33 - 0:38thousand times more powerful than what
-
0:36 - 0:41used to be sixty million dollars in half
-
0:38 - 0:42a building forty years ago, So far the
-
0:40 - 0:45crowd seems to be following the speech,
-
0:42 - 0:46So I want to switch gears for a minute
-
0:45 - 0:48and talk about something I think is
-
0:45 - 0:50really mind-blowing as well, Have you guys
-
0:48 - 0:52ever stop to think just about how a
-
0:50 - 0:56thought is an idea caught in the fangs
-
0:52 - 0:58of consciousness? Huh? Which is why you
-
0:56 - 1:04can put cats in hats, but not hats in cats,
-
0:57 - 1:06The soup is on so to speak, If it
-
1:03 - 1:09now sounds like Jason is speaking
-
1:06 - 1:10nonsense geometry, wisdom, tangerines, it
-
1:09 - 1:13all becomes possible,
-
1:10 - 1:16He is, So eat your soup, So how would you
-
1:13 - 1:19react? Dreamers among us dream about tangerines,
-
1:16 - 1:22Think this crowd will bail?
-
1:18 - 1:26E equals elephant, not the lizard, Or will
-
1:22 - 1:28conformity keep them in their seats? The
-
1:26 - 1:31nervous system marinating like the
-
1:28 - 1:33afterbirth, Let's just say the only thing
-
1:31 - 1:35more surprising than Jason's speech does that
-
1:33 - 1:37makes sense? Is seeing what these
-
1:34 - 1:40people do next, It's time to celebrate,
-
1:36 - 1:42Stick around, In essence, this is what
-
1:40 - 1:44true thought is all about, It's the
-
1:41 - 1:46disconnect it doesn't come from the
-
1:43 - 1:49knowledge that your mind predates time,
-
1:46 - 1:52That knowledge of time for days
-
1:48 - 1:53tangerines, We're conducting an
-
1:52 - 1:55experiment on conformity to see how this
-
1:53 - 1:57audience will react to someone who's
-
1:55 - 2:00clearly speaking complete gibberish,
-
1:57 - 2:04Which is why you can put cats in hats
-
1:59 - 2:07but not hats on cats so to speak, If you
-
2:04 - 2:12know what I mean? Are you following any
-
2:07 - 2:14of this? That is the elephant in the room, not
-
2:12 - 2:18the lizard, the elephant,
-
2:14 - 2:20It's reformadness, geometry, wisdom,
-
2:17 - 2:22tangerines, it all becomes possible, Okay
-
2:20 - 2:24this is getting weird,,,
-
2:22 - 2:26How would you react if you were in the
-
2:23 - 2:28audience? Silence? Would you get up and
-
2:26 - 2:32leave? That is all the time I have for
-
2:27 - 2:32today, thank you for listening you guys,
-
2:34 - 2:39[Applause] Thank you, Thank you,
-
2:39 - 2:44Polite applause is one thing, but these
-
2:42 - 2:49people are giving Jason a standing
-
2:44 - 2:54ovation for spewing complete nonsense, So
-
2:49 - 2:58what's going on here? Okay I'm going to
-
2:54 - 3:00let you in on a little secret, this my
-
2:57 - 3:02friends was an experiment in conformity
-
3:00 - 3:05to see if you'd give me a standing
-
3:02 - 3:09ovation even though the second half of
-
3:05 - 3:11my talk was complete gibberish and so
-
3:08 - 3:13you guys actually proved the point,
-
3:11 - 3:15Have you ever stood for an applause
-
3:12 - 3:17simply because everyone else is? You know
-
3:15 - 3:19he's talking about cats and hats and
-
3:16 - 3:21stuff like that now it's just like did
-
3:18 - 3:23what he really say merit a standing
-
3:21 - 3:25ovation? And he's right,
-
3:22 - 3:27but if Jason's speech didn't deserve
-
3:24 - 3:30such an ovation what made this audience
-
3:26 - 3:32stand up to applaud? It all started with
-
3:29 - 3:33two very enthusiastic audience members
-
3:31 - 3:35that we planted in the crowd for some
-
3:33 - 3:36added peer pressure,
-
3:34 - 3:39So I started seeing people standing
-
3:36 - 3:41up so okay, I'll stand up, There was a
-
3:38 - 3:44couple people that stood and were like
-
3:40 - 3:47really really enthused about standing,
-
3:44 - 3:49and everybody else started standing, so I
-
3:46 - 3:50figured it was definitely my fault, A
-
3:49 - 3:52standing ovation doesn't happen because
-
3:50 - 3:54everyone in the audience had the idea to
-
3:52 - 3:56stand up and applaud at the same time, it
-
3:54 - 3:58happens because a few people decided to
-
3:56 - 3:59stand and everyone else just went along
-
3:57 - 4:01with it, so it's not to be judged as
-
3:59 - 4:03uncaring or different, I felt like
-
4:01 - 4:05everybody who is going to be like you
-
4:02 - 4:06didn't get? It was so great, One
-
4:04 - 4:08incredibly fascinating aspect of mob
-
4:06 - 4:10mentality is how it only takes a few
-
4:08 - 4:14leaders to get the whole mob to follow,
-
4:10 - 4:18Well, almost the whole mob, Yeah they stood up, I was just like
-
4:14 - 4:21oh, have fun doing you, I'm
-
4:17 - 4:22gonna do me, I've always walked to the beat of
-
4:20 - 4:25my own drum that's how you survive, As
-
4:22 - 4:28you just witnessed, your brain tends to
-
4:24 - 4:28go along to get along with the crowd,
