This is Actually the WORST Makeup Launch EVER: Lisa Frank X Glamour Dolls | Behind the Controversy

  • Not Synced
Y'all when I started researching for this
  • Not Synced
video I honestly thought it was going to
  • Not Synced
    be faster
  • Not Synced
    huh
  • Not Synced
    I thought I knew everything I genuinely
  • Not Synced
did I was a backer for the Lisa Frank
  • Not Synced
Glamour Dolls campaign back in 2017
  • Not Synced
I really thought I knew the story
  • Not Synced
I saw other peoples videos on it
  • Not Synced
and I was in it, I did
  • Not Synced
all of the things, I was part of it.
  • Not Synced
My friend, oh-my gosh, I did not know.
  • Not Synced
There was so much that I did not know
  • Not Synced
It is so fucked up, like I am just-
  • Not Synced
    I am absolutely blown away.
  • Not Synced
Because the thing is, the more I started
  • Not Synced
looking into it, the more things that I found
  • Not Synced
And the more connections I was making
  • Not Synced
And I was like oh my gosh.
  • Not Synced
This is a story, my friend.
  • Not Synced
There is so much that happened
  • Not Synced
in the Lisa Frank Glamour Dolls Collab
  • Not Synced
That we did not know, because everything
  • Not Synced
    wasn't laid out through hindsight
  • Not Synced
    we know hindsight is 20/20.
  • Not Synced
Now we're seeing 20/20 my friend.
  • Not Synced
And the rainbows are not rainbowing,
  • Not Synced
and the unicorns and the peguseseses, and
  • Not Synced
they're not, it's not good, it's very bad.
  • Not Synced
So if you are ready, to go on this
  • Not Synced
    wild journey with me
  • Not Synced
    This is Behind the Controversy.
  • Not Synced
    And its starting right now.
  • Not Synced
    [Music]
  • Not Synced
I would dare to say, pretty much
  • Not Synced
    everybody watching this video
  • Not Synced
has been online and seen something
  • Not Synced
that you never intended to purchase,
  • Not Synced
but you had that impulse feeling.
  • Not Synced
    You had that feeling because,
  • Not Synced
for some reason, you didn't know
  • Not Synced
    that you needed this,
  • Not Synced
and you needed to buy it.
  • Not Synced
Maybe it solves some kind of problem
  • Not Synced
in your life, maybe it was some kind of
  • Not Synced
advancement on something you already knew
  • Not Synced
or maybe it was due to nostalgia.
  • Not Synced
Something that reminded you of your childhood
  • Not Synced
or just when you were younger,
  • Not Synced
something that made you feel happy,
  • Not Synced
    during that time.
  • Not Synced
And maybe its even something that made
  • Not Synced
    an entire generation feel happy.
  • Not Synced
That's the feeling that the backers had
  • Not Synced
when we saw that Lisa Frank was
  • Not Synced
coming out with makeup with a company
  • Not Synced
    named Glamour Dolls.
  • Not Synced
Now we did not, a lot of us had never
  • Not Synced
    heard of Glamour Dolls.
  • Not Synced
Imma be 100%, I'd never heard of
  • Not Synced
    Glamour Dolls before.
  • Not Synced
But I had heard of Lisa Frank.
  • Not Synced
And I was freaking out because
  • Not Synced
    I was a sticker collector.
  • Not Synced
    I-I will tell you though,
  • Not Synced
    the scratch-and-sniff stickers
  • Not Synced
were my favorite, but Lisa Frank
  • Not Synced
    stickers were super cool too.
  • Not Synced
    They were very very popular,
  • Not Synced
and that's the way it was
  • Not Synced
for a lot of people that were GenX
  • Not Synced
    or older millennials.
  • Not Synced
    Mostly, probably mid-millennials as well.
  • Not Synced
    If it wasn't the stickers,
  • Not Synced
maybe it was the school supplies.
  • Not Synced
Because Trapper Keepers were a thing.
  • Not Synced
It was not just a regular notebook.
  • Not Synced
    It was a cool notebook.
  • Not Synced
And they were kind of pricey,
  • Not Synced
so if you had a Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper,
  • Not Synced
    you were cool.
  • Not Synced
Or if you were like me, you had a knock-off
  • Not Synced
version from K-mart, which made you
  • Not Synced
    moderately cool. Not really.
  • Not Synced
    But we pretended we were.
  • Not Synced
    "I'll never forget the day
  • Not Synced
I got stuck on Lisa Frank.
  • Not Synced
The stickers were so cool, the colors
  • Not Synced
    were awesome.
  • Not Synced
I gotta find more. So go to the store,
  • Not Synced
And WOW, there's tons of awesome
  • Not Synced
Lisa Frank stuff. I gotta have it!
  • Not Synced
    What more can I say?
  • Not Synced
Pretty soon my friends, Ashley and Lindsay
  • Not Synced
are going Lisa Frank Crazy too."
  • Not Synced
And like I mentioned earlier, the company
  • Not Synced
that started all of this wasn't super
  • Not Synced
well known. They're called Glamour Dolls,
  • Not Synced
so they had to get their name out there
  • Not Synced
somehow, so they used an uber popular
  • Not Synced
    youtuber, at the time,
  • Not Synced
    named Candy Johnson.
  • Not Synced
And Candy Johnson was the perfect influencer
  • Not Synced
    for this campaign.
  • Not Synced
I don't even know if we were calling
  • Not Synced
    people influencers at that point.
  • Not Synced
But anyway, my point is that Candy Johnson
  • Not Synced
was top of her game. Everybody freaking
  • Not Synced
loved Candy, she was like the sweetest,
  • Not Synced
    sweetest, kindest person.
  • Not Synced
And she has this really light voice.
  • Not Synced
    And everybody freakin' loved Candy.
  • Not Synced
"Hi guys, 2016 is behind us, but
  • Not Synced
I am gonna share with you
  • Not Synced
my Best in Beauty of 2016.
  • Not Synced
Make sure if you have not subscribed,
  • Not Synced
    subscribe, join the family,
  • Not Synced
become a Candy Corn. Candy Corn,
  • Not Synced
like a Unicorn, but like candy corn,
  • Not Synced
    I don't know, I'll have to think
  • Not Synced
    about that one.
  • Not Synced
And follow me on Snapchat, Twitter,
  • Not Synced
Instagram, Facebook for all kinds of
  • Not Synced
    different and awesome things."
  • Not Synced
So when Candy announced the collaboration
  • Not Synced
between Glamour Dolls and Lisa Frank,
  • Not Synced
people lost their minds, they opened
  • Not Synced
their wallets to the tune of over $300,000
  • Not Synced
Almost 6,000 people backed this project.
  • Not Synced
Now, if you don't know what
  • Not Synced
I'm talking about as far as Kickstarter
  • Not Synced
    and "backing" a project,
  • Not Synced
    basically, it's kind of like a GoFundMe-ish
  • Not Synced
kind of thing, but for a business.
  • Not Synced
So the business wants to make a product,
  • Not Synced
but they don't have the money,
  • Not Synced
so they go and they tell people
  • Not Synced
"Hey, we wanna make this product,
  • Not Synced
if you back us, if you give us money
  • Not Synced
at different tiers, you'll get X products
  • Not Synced
for helping us to create the product."
  • Not Synced
This story has been told many times before.
  • Not Synced
But I don't think it has been told
  • Not Synced
in this way, because what I'm gonna
  • Not Synced
focus on in this video is the point of view
  • Not Synced
of the backers. What was it like to be
  • Not Synced
a backer from the beginning, and what
  • Not Synced
kind of tactics did Glamour Dolls use
  • Not Synced
to keep us hanging on for well over a year.
  • Not Synced
Where many, many people, including me,
  • Not Synced
did not ask for refunds even after
  • Not Synced
they were over a year late in sending out
  • Not Synced
    products.
  • Not Synced
Some of you are probably sitting there
  • Not Synced
thinking, like, "why didn't you know?"
  • Not Synced
like, "why didn't you see the red flags?"
  • Not Synced
    Like, "what happened?"
  • Not Synced
    I'm going to tell you.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to share with you what they
  • Not Synced
    did to us.
  • Not Synced
I'm pointing down because of a 22 page
  • Not Synced
script here with all the fucked-up shit
  • Not Synced
    that they did.
  • Not Synced
Because, if you haven't figured it out yet
  • Not Synced
    Yea, we didn't get anything.
  • Not Synced
[wheeze] Well some people got a little bit,
  • Not Synced
    but I didn't get anything
  • Not Synced
And the vast majority of people got
  • Not Synced
absolutely nothing, the people that did
  • Not Synced
get things, got very very little.
  • Not Synced
    It's layered. It's multi-layered.
  • Not Synced
So lets just jump in to the very beginning
  • Not Synced
which was the start of the Kickstarter
  • Not Synced
    in February of 2017.
  • Not Synced
    [Music]
  • Not Synced
Something you might want to remember
  • Not Synced
about 2017 was that we didn't have
  • Not Synced
    the inundation of weird collabs,
  • Not Synced
like we do now, I mean,
  • Not Synced
the Glamlite Pizza palette was still about
  • Not Synced
a year away, and that one broke
  • Not Synced
    the internet.
  • Not Synced
It was like the first really weird collab
  • Not Synced
that people were like "that's odd, but
  • Not Synced
    also kind of cool".
  • Not Synced
The kind of collabs we were getting
  • Not Synced
at the time were things like
  • Not Synced
    Wonder Woman and Luxie
  • Not Synced
and PUR and the Trolls Movie.
  • Not Synced
A makeup collaboration with Lisa Frank
  • Not Synced
had literally never been done before,
  • Not Synced
so people, naturally, were very excited
  • Not Synced
due to that strong feeling of nostalgia.
  • Not Synced
The Kickstarter launches with a maximum
  • Not Synced
bid of 40 dollars to get a few products
  • Not Synced
and a goal of 30,000 dollars.
  • Not Synced
And the lowest buy-in to get something was
  • Not Synced
pretty cheap, at 5 dollars for what they
  • Not Synced
    called, a digital background.
  • Not Synced
It was an image that you could use as your
  • Not Synced
    background on your phone,
  • Not Synced
or on your computer, or whatever.
  • Not Synced
The kickstarter ran for 45 days
  • Not Synced
    from February 16, 2017, to April 2, 2017.
  • Not Synced
It's also important to talk about the fact
  • Not Synced
that Glamour Dolls said that backers
  • Not Synced
would have a say in the products
  • Not Synced
    being created.
  • Not Synced
That there would be polling and voting
  • Not Synced
and people would get sneak peaks,
  • Not Synced
people would also get the products
  • Not Synced
at a discount, because the products
  • Not Synced
would eventually end up at retailers
  • Not Synced
but the backers, because you bought
  • Not Synced
in a bundle, would get things cheaper
  • Not Synced
than you would get if you bought
  • Not Synced
    the products individually.
  • Not Synced
Just 3 days into the campaign,
  • Not Synced
    Glamour Dolls posted their update.
  • Not Synced
    They were so so excited.
  • Not Synced
They said that Lisa was "opening
  • Not Synced
her vault and would be sending
  • Not Synced
1000 vintage goodies to be included,
  • Not Synced
    for the first 1000 backers".
  • Not Synced
    They promised a second treat,
  • Not Synced
if they hit 2000 backers, and Lisa
  • Not Synced
    had something really special planned
  • Not Synced
if they made it to 10,000.
  • Not Synced
They're just hyping the heck out of the
  • Not Synced
    backers, because they also promised
  • Not Synced
    something called "stretch rewards".
  • Not Synced
And they way they described it is not
  • Not Synced
    how it turned out.
  • Not Synced
Basically, what they said is that
  • Not Synced
if the backers, as a community, complete
  • Not Synced
a set of challenges, that something will
  • Not Synced
be unlocked, and this something was going
  • Not Synced
    to be very very exciting.
  • Not Synced
    Challenges included tasks like creating
  • Not Synced
    a Lisa Frank-inspired makeup look
  • Not Synced
and taking a picture of it, writing a rap
  • Not Synced
about Glitter and tweeting it, and they
  • Not Synced
even had a challenge where a person
  • Not Synced
had to create a foil unicorn horn and put
  • Not Synced
it on their head and take a picture
  • Not Synced
    of themselves in public, wearing
  • Not Synced
    the unicorn horn.
  • Not Synced
40 people had to take a picture of their
  • Not Synced
vintage Lisa Frank products and submit
  • Not Synced
    those pictures.
  • Not Synced
    See, the community's participating,
  • Not Synced
they're excited, they're talking about all
  • Not Synced
the things that they're doing because
  • Not Synced
in every comment section under each post
  • Not Synced
there's a place for people of the
  • Not Synced
community to communicate, to talk about
  • Not Synced
what's happening. Its almost like a
  • Not Synced
little, not a message board, but just
  • Not Synced
kind of a place to dump things that people
  • Not Synced
    were thinking after the update.
  • Not Synced
So people are hyped about this, they're
  • Not Synced
so excited about their stretch reward.
  • Not Synced
And this is the first big disappointment
  • Not Synced
    for the backers.
  • Not Synced
Because it was not an extra item added to
  • Not Synced
the bag, it wasn't even a reward, because
  • Not Synced
when you think of a reward, you think
  • Not Synced
    that you're getting something.
  • Not Synced
What it actually was, was a mock-up photo
  • Not Synced
of an image of three-piece nail polish set
  • Not Synced
and this is the kicker about it,
  • Not Synced
no pun intended, that the nail polish set
  • Not Synced
wasn't included in any of the levels,
  • Not Synced
so nobody that had put in any money
  • Not Synced
at this point was going to get the
  • Not Synced
    nail polishes that were featured
  • Not Synced
in the picture, in order to get the
  • Not Synced
nail polishes, you had to now increase
  • Not Synced
your bid by at least 15 dollars
  • Not Synced
because Glamour Dolls had just created
  • Not Synced
new tiers that required more investment
  • Not Synced
and the backers were like "what?"
  • Not Synced
    "That's it?"
  • Not Synced
What we just worked so hard for, we just
  • Not Synced
did all the challenges, 40 of us sent
  • Not Synced
pictures of our Lisa Frank stuff that we
  • Not Synced
dug out of our basement or out of
  • Not Synced
our attics, and we found the stuff and
  • Not Synced
we took the picture and we did
  • Not Synced
all the work, and we got a drawing of
  • Not Synced
something we're not getting unless we
  • Not Synced
    spend more money?
  • Not Synced
    That's what happened.
  • Not Synced
I'm gonna put the whole post on the screen
  • Not Synced
for you to read, but I'll read one of the
  • Not Synced
    key points.
  • Not Synced
"We started this collection with a handful
  • Not Synced
of products, but a big part of this
  • Not Synced
    Kickstarter is expanding the collection
  • Not Synced
with the community and developing new
  • Not Synced
    products to add to it.
  • Not Synced
What maybe separates this Kickstarter from
  • Not Synced
others is that we don't know how big the
  • Not Synced
    collection will ultimately be.
  • Not Synced
It all depends on community engagement".
  • Not Synced
But the thing was is that they told people
  • Not Synced
how big it was going to be.
  • Not Synced
Because that's what they put their money
  • Not Synced
in for because it said if you put the
  • Not Synced
money in for this amount, then you'll get
  • Not Synced
this stuff, and now she's saying that it
  • Not Synced
may get even bigger than that.
  • Not Synced
Because what was about to happen is they
  • Not Synced
were about to add even more tiers with
  • Not Synced
    even more products.
  • Not Synced
    The explanation continued with this,
  • Not Synced
which was the kicker, "we would have told
  • Not Synced
you from the beginning" that basically it
  • Not Synced
was only a drawing of a mock-up of
  • Not Synced
something that no one was getting yet, but
  • Not Synced
"we only developed it last week.
  • Not Synced
In response to fan engagement after we
  • Not Synced
    researched cost formulations. For many
  • Not Synced
people, the challenges were a fun way to
  • Not Synced
unlock it and we'll be clear going
  • Not Synced
forward so you can choose whether
  • Not Synced
    to participate".
  • Not Synced
Unlock what? They unlocked a picture of
  • Not Synced
something they had to pay more for.
  • Not Synced
Thing is is that kind of the way that
  • Not Synced
these stretch rewards work, but they
  • Not Synced
didn't explain it to people that way.
  • Not Synced
When people see a stretch reward, they're
  • Not Synced
going to think that they're getting
  • Not Synced
    something as a reward.
  • Not Synced
What it is traditionally called is
  • Not Synced
a "stretch goal" and that is not something
  • Not Synced
that is officially part of kickstarter,
  • Not Synced
    but something that Kickstarter campaigns
  • Not Synced
do often. They usually call them goals,
  • Not Synced
not rewards, and from what I was reading,
  • Not Synced
a lot of the stretch goals typically happen
  • Not Synced
after the backers already have their first
  • Not Synced
set of products because they have gotten
  • Not Synced
their products, they're excited about it,
  • Not Synced
they're loving it, and now they want
  • Not Synced
    something more.
  • Not Synced
So in order to stretch their amount that
  • Not Synced
they've collected and create more products
  • Not Synced
they have a stretch goal. So let's say, If
  • Not Synced
I get 100 people to donate 20 more dollars
  • Not Synced
we can create X products, so lets see if
  • Not Synced
we can get to our stretch goal, rather
  • Not Synced
    than, it's a mystery, it's a game, it's a
  • Not Synced
    reward, it wasn't.
  • Not Synced
    They just completely missed represented
  • Not Synced
that to backers. But I'm telling you,
  • Not Synced
that snafu is mild, compared to what is
  • Not Synced
    coming next, like that-that's just
  • Not Synced
extremely minor. It gets so so much worse.
  • Not Synced
So trying to backtrack, Glamour Dolls
  • Not Synced
tells their backers "hey, if we get to
  • Not Synced
3,500 backers, then we're going to include
  • Not Synced
in everybody's bag, the first 3500 people,
  • Not Synced
a Lisa Frank designed crease brush.
  • Not Synced
Sometimes they call this a crease brush,
  • Not Synced
sometimes they call it a blending brush,
  • Not Synced
    its the same brush.
  • Not Synced
The promise of the free crease brush,
  • Not Synced
I am not kidding you, according to the
  • Not Synced
    Kickstarter brought them past that
  • Not Synced
3500 backer mark in 24 hours.
  • Not Synced
So at this point in time, highest level
  • Not Synced
    includes everything that they've said
  • Not Synced
so far, plus the nail polishes at a $60
  • Not Synced
price point. But people were still mad,
  • Not Synced
people were like, this is not what you
  • Not Synced
said it was going to be, sir, ma'am, sir.
  • Not Synced
So in response, Glamour Dolls was like
  • Not Synced
"ok, well, we will add something else,
  • Not Synced
we'll add something from our own line",
  • Not Synced
It was what they called their
  • Not Synced
    "Gypsy Eyeliners" to the first
  • Not Synced
2000 backers who complete a survey
  • Not Synced
to pick their preferred color of this
  • Not Synced
liner. They were going to add that into
  • Not Synced
the boxes, and that I think kind of
  • Not Synced
calmed people down a little bit,
  • Not Synced
they were like "ok, that feels more like
  • Not Synced
a reward." And people started getting
  • Not Synced
really excited about everything all over
  • Not Synced
again. A backer named Marsha said
  • Not Synced
"Wow, thanks yet again, the entire vibe
  • Not Synced
of this campaign totally reminds me of
  • Not Synced
what it felt like to open my noisy
  • Not Synced
    Lisa Frank Trapperkeeper, write with
  • Not Synced
my pencils, play with my erasers, that I
  • Not Synced
never used, to keep pristine, like dolls
  • Not Synced
LOL, etc. in school. It made me smile
  • Not Synced
and dream. I feel like we're all reliving
  • Not Synced
our childhoods through this campaign and
  • Not Synced
your team is making this fun. I'm hoping
  • Not Synced
this will begin a new generation
  • Not Synced
of Lisa Frank fans, when kids see us using
  • Not Synced
    our stuff".
  • Not Synced
Little did Marsha and the rest of us know,
  • Not Synced
we'd never use the stuff, we're not
  • Not Synced
getting the stuff. In March of 2017,
  • Not Synced
the Kickstarter is still going on, and
  • Not Synced
one of the founders and CEOs
  • Not Synced
of Glamour Dolls came on to clarify a
  • Not Synced
couple things. You're gonna see his name
  • Not Synced
coming up a lot. His name is Peter,
  • Not Synced
he looks like that. Just so you can get
  • Not Synced
a visual of who we're talking to.
  • Not Synced
    Peter, CEO, founder, Glamour Dolls,
  • Not Synced
along with a chick named Jessica,
  • Not Synced
that's Jessica. Back in 2017, unless you
  • Not Synced
were in the makeup industry, there wasn't
  • Not Synced
    as much information readily available
  • Not Synced
    about how makeup manufacturing worked,
  • Not Synced
so Peter felt like it was important
  • Not Synced
to explain to the backers, kind of, what
  • Not Synced
we were in for with this. He explained
  • Not Synced
    something called minimum order quantities
  • Not Synced
and he said "as we get more pledges we
  • Not Synced
have to order more units and if the order
  • Not Synced
gets big enough, we are able to consider
  • Not Synced
adding new products, knowing that we will
  • Not Synced
be able to meet the factory minimums for
  • Not Synced
    packaging and filling".
  • Not Synced
And then he says "as we add new products,
  • Not Synced
there will need to be some higher pledge
  • Not Synced
tiers, there no way around it. I wish I
  • Not Synced
could tell you exactly how much the
  • Not Synced
highest tier will be or how many products
  • Not Synced
we'll end up with, but we came here to
  • Not Synced
figure that out with you. But, you may see
  • Not Synced
the problem with this, in that they
  • Not Synced
haven't even created or started to create
  • Not Synced
    the products they've already promised,
  • Not Synced
and now we're talking about adding on
  • Not Synced
another layer, more tiers, more products,
  • Not Synced
that also they don't have any plan for how
  • Not Synced
they're going to make them. There's no
  • Not Synced
artwork from Lisa frank, there's no colors
  • Not Synced
picked out, there's just a concept
  • Not Synced
in their minds, that's all that exists.
  • Not Synced
And as we go through this, you'll realize
  • Not Synced
they didn't even calculate the financials
  • Not Synced
on how much all this was going to cost,
  • Not Synced
or if they did calculate the financials,
  • Not Synced
they didn't care, they were like, we'll
  • Not Synced
    figure it out some how.
  • Not Synced
And then Peter said something that stuck
  • Not Synced
in the minds of backers for the rest
  • Not Synced
of the campaign. This is what he said,
  • Not Synced
"Ultimately, whatever we do and don't
  • Not Synced
figure out, these products will be
  • Not Synced
    available for individual purchase before
  • Not Synced
the end of the year". The end of 2017.
  • Not Synced
Kickstarter backers will just be getting
  • Not Synced
    them first. They didn't.
  • Not Synced
So you remember how I said they were
  • Not Synced
adding all of these new products, and
  • Not Synced
    either they didn't calculate the
  • Not Synced
financials to figure out how much they
  • Not Synced
were gonna cost or they did know, but they
  • Not Synced
"oh we'll get the money from somewhere"
  • Not Synced
they kinda figured out how they might get
  • Not Synced
the money. They tapped into a creator
  • Not Synced
named Wengie, now back then, there was
  • Not Synced
a big boom around creators who did DIY
  • Not Synced
challenge kinds of videos. I'm gonna show
  • Not Synced
you some of Wengie's thumbnails. She got
  • Not Synced
tens of millions of views on these videos
  • Not Synced
Wengie was huge in this space, especially
  • Not Synced
with kids. At the time, Wengie only had
  • Not Synced
    6 million official subscribers
  • Not Synced
on her channel, but she had way more
  • Not Synced
    watching her.
  • Not Synced
Wengie: Hey guys, it's Wengie Welcome back
  • Not Synced
but today I'm here to make a special
  • Not Synced
    awesome announcement, I'm so excited
  • Not Synced
to announce this, like I can't even right
  • Not Synced
now. I'm going to be collaborating with
  • Not Synced
Lisa Frank and Glamour Dolls on an
  • Not Synced
eyeshadow palette, like What?! for those
  • Not Synced
of you who haven't heard about Lisa Frank
  • Not Synced
she is so amazing. She is, like, literally my childhood.
  • Not Synced
And her art is all about rainbows,
  • Not Synced
    unicorns, colorful, like
  • Not Synced
    everything I'm about.
  • Not Synced
Like, her art is my aesthetic, but
  • Not Synced
    the most amazing thing is
  • Not Synced
you guys get to be involved as well
  • Not Synced
because you guys are my Wingy-con fam
  • Not Synced
and if I'm going to work on my first
  • Not Synced
    huge collaboration,
it's got to be with you guys.
  • Not Synced
So, I really want you guys to help
    contribute to our creative.
  • Not Synced
    Choose the colors with us,
choose the designs of the pallet.
  • Not Synced
    And we've partnered with
    Glamour Dolls Make-up
  • Not Synced
    to make this come alive.
  • Not Synced
Because they are a high quality,
    vegan, cruelty-free brand.
  • Not Synced
    Not only that,
  • Not Synced
    they make super affordable makeup,
  • Not Synced
    because I want this collaboration
    to be affordable to everyone.
  • Not Synced
    And the great thing
    about this whole process
  • Not Synced
    is this was Internationally available
    no matter where you are,
  • Not Synced
    you can pre-order this palette.
  • Not Synced
    I'm not a hundred percent
on this timeline, but it seems
  • Not Synced
like this is when they added more tiers.
  • Not Synced
They added a seventy dollar tier,
    a one hundred dollar tier,
  • Not Synced
    and two hundred dollar tier,
  • Not Synced
    but what they added that
    was the most important thing
  • Not Synced
that I think really turned everything,
  • Not Synced
    was the additional of the
    Trapper Keeper palettes.
  • Not Synced
These were going to be six pan
    eye-shadow palettes that
  • Not Synced
looked legit like a trapper keeper.
  • Not Synced
No one had ever seen anything
    like this before and the
  • Not Synced
    nostalgia overload. Oh my gosh.
    People lost their minds when
  • Not Synced
    they were thinking,
"Oh my gosh, a trapper keeper
  • Not Synced
eye-shadow palette, I need to have this
    in my life!"
  • Not Synced
    So, along with Wengie
    trapper keeper palette
  • Not Synced
there would be a naturally glam
palette and a bold a bright palette.
  • Not Synced
All adorned with Lisa Frank artwork.
  • Not Synced
Just an hour before the kickstarted ended,
  • Not Synced
    Glamour Dolls made another promise.
  • Not Synced
    They said that everybody, thanks
    to their participation,
  • Not Synced
    anybody that participated in the
Kickstarter was going to get a goody bag.
  • Not Synced
What was in the goody bag?
No idea - no one ever got it.
  • Not Synced
    But they promised, they said
"There's gonna be a goody bag added,
  • Not Synced
thank you so much for backing
    this project.":
  • Not Synced
    According to the community,
at the time, it looked like before
  • Not Synced
    Wengie launched her video,
    they were at about
  • Not Synced
    two hundred fifty thousand dollars
    in pledges.
  • Not Synced
    After Wendgie launched her video,
    they reached their peak
  • Not Synced
at three hundred seventy thousand dollars
    and almost six thousand people.
  • Not Synced
That was an average of about sixty two
    dollars spent per backer.
  • Not Synced
The one hundred dollar tier got everything
    from the collection.
  • Not Synced
And the two hundred dollar tier got two
sets of everything in the collection.
  • Not Synced
Now me not having a ton of money,
at the time, and being a procrastinator
  • Not Synced
I waited until the last minute to
    back this campaign.
  • Not Synced
So I joined in at the very last moment
in the very last day of the campaign
  • Not Synced
at the seventy dollar level, so I paid
seventy dollars plus five dollar shipping.
  • Not Synced
And I will tell you, I was most excited
about those dang trapper keeper palettes.
  • Not Synced
    So excited about those things!
  • Not Synced
And I was excited, after I saw the drawing
I was excited about the nail polishes.
  • Not Synced
They looked really cool. I'd never seen
    anything quite like that.
  • Not Synced
And I wanted to review it for the channel,
  • Not Synced
I was excited to talk to you all about it.
  • Not Synced
Was it good quality along with
    being really cute?
  • Not Synced
I wanted to let you know.
  • Not Synced
    [music]
  • Not Synced
    Then something really weird happened.
  • Not Synced
Because, at the time, I was really in to
subscription boxes, I got a ton of them.
  • Not Synced
I got my Ipsy bag, and I got this in it.
  • Not Synced
    Yes, I still have it.
  • Not Synced
This is the Lisa Frank blush brush.
  • Not Synced
    What?
  • Not Synced
Why-why am I getting this in an Ipsy bag?
  • Not Synced
Let me go ahead and show you,
  • Not Synced
it is super super freaking cute.
  • Not Synced
there is a little line here,
    where the image connects,
  • Not Synced
but overall it's just a very cute design.
  • Not Synced
I will show you though that the, ya know,
    it is a little wiggly,
  • Not Synced
    it's not great quality, but
    at the time,
  • Not Synced
    I was more just confused.
    We are all super confused
  • Not Synced
on what is happening and why
the Lisa Frank blush brushes are in Ipsy.
  • Not Synced
    You guys! I'm so excited!
  • Not Synced
I saw that this might be a possibility,
something you could get in your bag,
  • Not Synced
and I got it! I'm so excited!
  • Not Synced
The fourth grader in my is, like,
jumping up and down, she has
  • Not Synced
her Lisa Frank trapper keeper like
    in the air.
  • Not Synced
This is a Lisa Frank inspired brush!
  • Not Synced
    Look at this thing!
    Look [laughs] at this thing!
  • Not Synced
    There's magical, like, unicorns
    on the handle.
  • Not Synced
And it is pink, and vibrant,
    and blue, and green,
  • Not Synced
and all sorts of magical colors.
  • Not Synced
If I would've had this in fourth grade
I would've been the coolest kid around
  • Not Synced
    I would've been like, "yes, I'm putting
on my fake blush with my [laughs]
  • Not Synced
    Lisa Frank blush brush.
    Thank you very much."
  • Not Synced
Guys, I'm completely serious, I had
the trapper keeper, I had the folders,
  • Not Synced
I had the pencils, I had the little, like
pencil holder. I had everything -
  • Not Synced
    everything Lisa Frank.
  • Not Synced
When I was in fourth grade, that was like,
the only way to be cool was to have
  • Not Synced
    multicolored rainbow cheetahs
    on your trapper keeper.
  • Not Synced
And now I am twentyfour yearold woman with
a rainbow unicorn brush and I love it.
  • Not Synced
    But it does make sense,
    it will make sense
  • Not Synced
    I'm gonna get there.
  • Not Synced
About a month after the kickstarter ended,
    there was a red flag.
  • Not Synced
Besides the red flag of the
blush brush being in Ipsy bags and
  • Not Synced
them not telling us that this could happen,
  • Not Synced
this was another major red flag that we
    probably should've seen.
  • Not Synced
What they posted to the kickstarter
was basically about lessons that they
  • Not Synced
    had learned so far.
  • Not Synced
    This is what they said:
  • Not Synced
"Lisa knows how much we've got in the
works, but her advice was to
  • Not Synced
stop and focus on a few things with
    high production quality rather than
  • Not Synced
trying to do everything at once.
  • Not Synced
Our friends at Kickstarter gave us
    some very similar advice-
  • Not Synced
this is a marathon, not a sprint.
  • Not Synced
We've taken it to heart, and stopped, gone
back to the lab and made sure that the
  • Not Synced
next few weeks are going to run smoothly
and be everything that we promised. "
  • Not Synced
So ever body, Lisa Frank, Kickstarter,
    every body's telling Glamour Dolls
  • Not Synced
    you're doing too much. Stop.
  • Not Synced
You have made too many promises
and you are going to just lose everything
  • Not Synced
slow down, figure out how you're going to
  • Not Synced
just get a couple of high quality products
out and then worry about the rest,
  • Not Synced
but the thing is; is on the Kickstarter
page, it had said 'estimated deliver of
  • Not Synced
    September of 2017,
  • Not Synced
So we are now the beginning of May.
    June, July, August, Semptember,
  • Not Synced
that's four months until the estimated
    deliver date of the products.
  • Not Synced
Now, I didn't know at the time a lot
about production, I had no idea,
  • Not Synced
so I didn't know that was
    freaking impossible.
  • Not Synced
    [scoff[
  • Not Synced
I don't think a lot of us knew that
    that was freaking impossible,
  • Not Synced
    but it was freaking impossible.
  • Not Synced
But Glamour Dolls didn't tell us
    it was freaking impossible,
  • Not Synced
oh no, they made us think it was
we were getting our stuff in September
  • Not Synced
    because, remember, at this point,
    they've got thirteen products
  • Not Synced
    that they've promised us,
  • Not Synced
    including counting each nail polish
    as one product.
  • Not Synced
And then, on top of that,
    they had promised us
  • Not Synced
that they would add in a Lisa Frank
designed nail file, so that made it
  • Not Synced
    fourteen products that they needed
to give us, in four months.
  • Not Synced
    [eh-eh]
  • Not Synced
Because we didn't realize as backers,
  • Not Synced
that Lisa was designing all of this stuff
    from scratch.
  • Not Synced
Why in the world, she was not using
existing artwork, I have no freaking clue.
  • Not Synced
    I still don't know why she didn't
    use existing artwork.
  • Not Synced
And in hindsight, this is why hindsight
    is twenty - twenty.
  • Not Synced
Glamour Dolls had to have know there was
    no way in hell
  • Not Synced
we were getting this stuff by September
but they didn't tell us that.
  • Not Synced
They even went so far as people saying
it was their birthday in September
  • Not Synced
and they were so excited to get
Glamour Doll's products for their birthday
  • Not Synced
    and Glamour Doll's like "yaaayy,
we're so excited for you to get them too!"
  • Not Synced
They knew darn well those people were
    not getting those products
  • Not Synced
    for their birthday.
  • Not Synced
In May of 2017, the surveys continued
  • Not Synced
They started really asking us our opinions
on how we wanted things to be done.
  • Not Synced
And we started seeing actual product
    coming together
  • Not Synced
and they sent a picture of this unicorn
lippy- it was a lip balm
  • Not Synced
and it was a unicorn, and it was so
    freaking cute in this little
  • Not Synced
empty white box. Of course it was a white
box, because Lisa hadn't designed the
  • Not Synced
artwork yet, but they were like,
  • Not Synced
"yes look at this draft of this unicorn,
    it's so cute!"
  • Not Synced
And then they sent over the picture
of the vegan leather make-up bag
  • Not Synced
also so cute! Really cute little zipper,
that was like a rainbow, and it was white,
  • Not Synced
of course, because again, Lisa hadn't
    designed the artwork yet.
  • Not Synced
We also got a final look at the upcoming
crease brush, now keep in mind,
  • Not Synced
that the blush brush that was already
sent out to Ipsy people, and this
  • Not Synced
crease brush, were only going to be
shipped to the highest tear backers.
  • Not Synced
The 100 dollar level, and the 200 dollar
level. This is going to be important
  • Not Synced
    in just a moment.
  • Not Synced
In June, we get another in hindsight
    red-flag, because Glamour Dolls
  • Not Synced
opened up another way to buy items from
the collection from a site called 'backer kit'
  • Not Synced
and on Backer Kit, you could order product
individually to be added to your box
  • Not Synced
when all of your stuff shipped.
  • Not Synced
It was also a way for people who hadn't
    been part of the kickstarter
  • Not Synced
to get on the action and
    order the products.
  • Not Synced
If you did happen to order the angled
    blush brush from Backer Kit
  • Not Synced
those blush brushes did go out
  • Not Synced
but the 100 dollar and 200 dollar people,
still didn't have a blush brush.
  • Not Synced
Unless they got it in their Ipsy bag,
then they had a blush brush.
  • Not Synced
And if they were 200 dollar tear,
  • Not Synced
they were gonna end up with 3
blush brushes by the end of it,
  • Not Synced
if they also got it in Ipsy.
  • Not Synced
And in June, Backers got a sneak peak
    of a single eye shadow
  • Not Synced
and a bronzer - we are almost there
  • Not Synced
of the big debacle with the bronzer
    and the eye shadow.
  • Not Synced
    That's a whole 'nother thing -
    we're almost there.
  • Not Synced
Throughout June we also got sneaks of the
    Trapper Keeper palate -
  • Not Synced
who are so excited! The draft of the
    actual product packaging.
  • Not Synced
We also got sneaks of the
    matte mousse swatches,
  • Not Synced
we also got information about what the
nail polish colors were gonna look like,
  • Not Synced
I mean they are giving us pieces and
    pieces, and pieces,
  • Not Synced
of 'this is coming, this is coming,
this is what we're working on.'
  • Not Synced
They really did show us a lot!
  • Not Synced
    But one thing you'll notice,
if you listen carefully to this video
  • Not Synced
    of this nail polish swatches,
  • Not Synced
    is somebody in the background
    says something about Hot Topic.
  • Not Synced
    [inaudible]
  • Not Synced
    That's gonna be another piece.
  • Not Synced
    [laughs]
  • Not Synced
    Hang tight.
  • Not Synced
They also said that everything was
still on track for shipping in September
  • Not Synced
    in three months!
  • Not Synced
How are they telling us this?
  • Not Synced
They lied to us! They outright lied to us!
They had to have known, darn well,
  • Not Synced
we weren't getting shit in September.
  • Not Synced
Because at this point nobody had even
gotten on this digital background yet,
  • Not Synced
    that should've been the easiest
    thing to do.
  • Not Synced
You have a piece of art, you send it out as
a background,-you just digitally send it
  • Not Synced
you don't even have to mail anything!
  • Not Synced
you don't even have to create a
    physical product!
  • Not Synced
It's literally just a piece of
    art e-mailed, that's it!
  • Not Synced
They didn't even make that yet.
  • Not Synced
    Here comes another red flag.
    Are you ready?
  • Not Synced
In July, they started selling that crease
brush that was supposed to go to the
  • Not Synced
    top tear backers, they started
selling it on their website for 4.99
  • Not Synced
    and according to Popsugar, it
    sold out immediately
  • Not Synced
at the beginning of July, and
then restocked in the middle of July
  • Not Synced
So this is what I think happened,
  • Not Synced
because, of course, you can't sell out
and then restock two weeks later
  • Not Synced
from a true sell out. You have to
order more! They didn't sell out!
  • Not Synced
What they did, I think, is they
had a number of extra brushes
  • Not Synced
beyond what people had, what they
had, you know, allocated to send out.
  • Not Synced
So they sold those brushes, and then
they realized they were selling out so fast
  • Not Synced
    they sold the backer's brushes.
  • Not Synced
    I guess, figuring they
    would just make more.
  • Not Synced
And they would just send more out later,
    I don't know.
  • Not Synced
So while all of this has happened,
    Glamour Dolls is continually and
  • Not Synced
    constantly involving the backers in
    the development process
  • Not Synced
    of everything. We're watching everything
go down, and I will honestly tell you...
  • Not Synced
    I kinda tuned out, I was like, "I don't
    even freakin' care" like,
  • Not Synced
I don't care what thin- I just want the
    products! Like, I participated
  • Not Synced
in a couple of surveys, but after that,
    I just stopped reading e-mails.
  • Not Synced
    I was like, I don't care! I don't care
about all of this, it's too much!
  • Not Synced
It's just- send me the products!
  • Not Synced
    I don't care what ya'll decide. It's j-
    it's fine - it's whatever.
  • Not Synced
So I kinda tuned out at this point.
  • Not Synced
But a lot of people were very invested
    in all of these choices.
  • Not Synced
    The backers even started arguing
    amongst each other,
  • Not Synced
where some people were being a little
    harsh about the designs,
  • Not Synced
like with the trapper keeper palate,
saying that the mirror was too small
  • Not Synced
and can you make the mirror bigger,
    people were complaining that there
  • Not Synced
were too many unicorns. Like, and then
    some people, just being like,
  • Not Synced
    jus-just-what did you expect,
    it's Lisa Frank.
  • Not Synced
Just let them do the thing.
    It's fine. It's fine.
  • Not Synced
    People were just getting frustrated
and just started arguing back and forth
  • Not Synced
    a little bit.
  • Not Synced
    Jessica, the co-founder with Peter
even came in and was like,
  • Not Synced
"hey ya'll, you need to speak nicely to
each other, like, we're a community
  • Not Synced
we're working on this together, cause it's
starting to get a little heated."
  • Not Synced
Now we're in August of 2017, one month
before we're supposed to be getting
  • Not Synced
    our products shipped.
  • Not Synced
We get another shot of the bronzer,
    this time with swatches.
  • Not Synced
this is what they said, "We specifically
developed this formula so it's universally
  • Not Synced
flattering, making it the perfect shade
    for all of our dolls."
  • Not Synced
Unless the dolls are deeper than that
    color, I-I don't know.
  • Not Synced
The thing is, you really can't make a
    universal shade of bronzer
  • Not Synced
    because what works for someone
very deep skinned, is not gonna work
  • Not Synced
for someone with very pale skin.
  • Not Synced
    You just can't do that.
  • Not Synced
All you can do is shoot for the middle.
  • Not Synced
So just saying that they made it for
all of their dolls, just really was kind of
  • Not Synced
insulting to some of the backers.
  • Not Synced
    The most interested update,
i['m gonna go ahead, put it on the screen
  • Not Synced
for you, but I'll read the most
    interesting part, they said,
  • Not Synced
"we know we've been little quiet
    over the last few weeks,
  • Not Synced
but trust us, we have so many fun
    and exciting updates to share
  • Not Synced
with you guys. The Trapper Keeper
    palate artwork should be finalized
  • Not Synced
any day now. " Any day now. "And we
literally cannot wait to show you
  • Not Synced
what it looks like! This collaboration
has been long time in the works,
  • Not Synced
and we know that in the end,
it'll be worth all the blood, sweat
  • Not Synced
and glitter tears that we put into it."
  • Not Synced
There's no mention of any shipping delays,
  • Not Synced
    There's just - we're getting our products.
All of them - in September apparently.
  • Not Synced
[laughs] And the reason why we know this
is because they keep showing us things,
  • Not Synced
they keep showing us that things
    are almost done!
  • Not Synced
We got a sneak peak of the shades that
were gonna be in the bold and bright palat
  • Not Synced
we also got an explanation about the
    digital artwork that was supposed
  • Not Synced
to be going out, and what they basically
said was that they wanted to start
  • Not Synced
    with the hardest products first,
    like the trapper keeper palates,
  • Not Synced
and then work they way to the easiest stuff
which would be the digital background.
  • Not Synced
In mid-August they put out a statement
that the Wengie palate was almost finished
  • Not Synced
and that they would update when they
    had an exact delivery schedule.
  • Not Synced
So it's getting towards the end of August
  • Not Synced
and the people with the September
    birthdays are starting to realize
  • Not Synced
I'm not getting this for my birthday,
    am I?
  • Not Synced
So there was a backer that said
    "It's obvious that all the
  • Not Synced
    September birthday backers are
not receiving their make-up next month
  • Not Synced
it's almost September, and not many
    products and designs are finalized
  • Not Synced
as much of a bummer this may be,
    getting Lisa Frank make-up
  • Not Synced
for Christmas, will still be really cool.
I hope it's ready by then."
  • Not Synced
    It's not gonna be ready.
  • Not Synced
    [music[
  • Not Synced
    So September finally arrives
    and everybody is like okay
  • Not Synced
    we're gonna get our announcement
that everything is gonna be shipped
  • Not Synced
but we did not get that!
  • Not Synced
What we got was a sneak of the shade
    of the lip mousse,
  • Not Synced
and no mention of the fact that things
are supposed to be shipping right now
  • Not Synced
like, they just didn't even say anything.
  • Not Synced
Comment after comment, people are like
    "what the hell? You're showing
  • Not Synced
me a shade of the lip mousse, how
    are you still making this?!
  • Not Synced
We're supposed to be getting them shipped
    this month!?"
  • Not Synced
So, after that post, everybody was pissed.
Everybody was sounding off in the comments
  • Not Synced
how mad they were, so the CEO had
to re-group and he ended up putting out
  • Not Synced
    a very lengthy statement.
I will put it all on the screen for you.
  • Not Synced
    He sincerely apologizes for
    gaps in communication
  • Not Synced
and disappointment, and he says that
if for any reason backers are not happy
  • Not Synced
that they can send an email and they
    will issue a refund immediately.
  • Not Synced
followed with quote, "we need to stress
to all of you that you will be receiving
  • Not Synced
the products that you paid for
    no matter what."
  • Not Synced
And I really genuinely don't think that
people asked for refunds because of this
  • Not Synced
because they saw things that they really
wanted and they knew if they asked
  • Not Synced
for a refund, they weren't going
    to get any of it.
  • Not Synced
And they still had faith that at some
point, this was going to happen.
  • Not Synced
Maybe it wasn't going to happen right now,
  • Not Synced
but, if I take my money out I'm not
    getting all this stuff.
  • Not Synced
And if I do want it, I'm gonna have to
wait for it to go to retailers
  • Not Synced
and I'm gonna have to pay retail
    price for it- i'm gon-I
  • Not Synced
I'm gonna have to pay a lot more money
  • Not Synced
for it, when if I had just been patient,
    I would've gotten everything that I wanted.
  • Not Synced
    The post continued with statements
about threats that they were getting
  • Not Synced
across social media- and they said
    that the threats are unnecessary
  • Not Synced
and if they want a refund,
    just let them know.
  • Not Synced
And they also said, about the shipping
delay, they said it was just an estimated
  • Not Synced
    shipping delivery for September.
  • Not Synced
Quote, "We started all these products
from scratch with you at the concept phase
  • Not Synced
and this is our first time working with
a license so there are new steps
  • Not Synced
and things to learn. Hiccups have ranged
from trying to find the right
  • Not Synced
fulfillment agents, to some of the
    packaging samples we received
  • Not Synced
not being up to our standards.
  • Not Synced
We were clear from the beginning
    and in previous updates
  • Not Synced
    that things might get delayed
    as the process played out.
  • Not Synced
We realize that September will be over
within a few short weeks, which means
  • Not Synced
we will unfortunately not be -be on target
    with our hopeful September estimation."
  • Not Synced
This is a bold face lie!
It is a straight up lie!
  • Not Synced
They never once in any of the updates
told any body that there could possibly
  • Not Synced
    be a delay.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, they reassured customers
that everything was on track for September
  • Not Synced
    They lied!
  • Not Synced
    Regarding communication, they said
it hasn't been the best, but they're
  • Not Synced
going to do better in the future.
  • Not Synced
And about people getting the brushes
from Ipsy, 'member, I said 'hold on'?
  • Not Synced
we're gonna get to it -
I'm getting to it right now.
  • Not Synced
They said, "The only products from this
collection that are on the market
  • Not Synced
are the Lisa Frank blush brush
and the Lisa Frank blending brush.
  • Not Synced
Those were developed six months before
the kickstarted, along with the eye shadow
  • Not Synced
and the travel bronzer for a specific
    customer."
  • Not Synced
    That specific customer was Ipsy,
  • Not Synced
"And were offered during this campaign as
an addition perk, or add on,
  • Not Synced
so that you can truly have everything
    in the collection.
  • Not Synced
Beyond that, we can assure you that
    anything being developed
  • Not Synced
through kickstarter will be in your
    hands first."
  • Not Synced
What they don't mention in this,
  • Not Synced
was the update where they said
that 3500 backers, the first 3500
  • Not Synced
were also going to get the crease
    slash blending brush.
  • Not Synced
    They've conveniently forgotten about that.
  • Not Synced
That actually never gets mentioned again.
  • Not Synced
When backers pointed out that Glam Dolls
raised ten times more than their
  • Not Synced
original goal of 30 thousand dollars,
  • Not Synced
they said that it didn't make things
easier, it actually made things more
  • Not Synced
    complicated, because that's when
    they started adding extra products.
  • Not Synced
Well who's dang fault was that!?
  • Not Synced
This is also the first mention of
    hand painted items.
  • Not Synced
Why are there hand painted items
    in this collection?
  • Not Synced
I have no idea. I don't know why
they thought this was a good idea.
  • Not Synced
    We'll talk about that.
  • Not Synced
They also mention, that of course,
    because the backers went in
  • Not Synced
and helped them fund the products
    that they will get everything
  • Not Synced
at a cheaper price than what they
    would be sold at retail.
  • Not Synced
    Then they breakdown everything
that they say is happening right now
  • Not Synced
    including, they say, specifically
  • Not Synced
that all the products have been finalized
  • Not Synced
    and physical production samples
    have been approved,
  • Not Synced
but they do say that they're
    keeping 3 products blank
  • Not Synced
so that community can vote on
what kind of artwork is going to
  • Not Synced
go on to those 3 products.
  • Not Synced
They also promise that on October
1st, they're going to ship out
  • Not Synced
    those 4 products that were
    made before the kickstarter started;
  • Not Synced
    the 2 brushes, the eyeshadow,
    and the bronzer.
  • Not Synced
They'll go out to the 100 and 200
    dollar backers.
  • Not Synced
As well as anybody that added them on.
  • Not Synced
They also say this: "In addition to the
press, we were reached out to by
  • Not Synced
a few major retailors, all of whom
require time and energy to onboard
  • Not Synced
with. There have been many sleepless
nights and it has been a journey
  • Not Synced
as we try to build our team, and turn
this opportunity in to a solid foundation"
  • Not Synced
I don't think we knew what this meant
    at the time,
  • Not Synced
but this meant that they had two
    retailors they were talking to
  • Not Synced
    to sell these products.
    Hot Topic and Dolls Kill.
  • Not Synced
The letter then goes on to pull
    at the heartstrings
  • Not Synced
of the backers, to get everybody
to calm down, and be patient,
  • Not Synced
    and be nice to them.
  • Not Synced
They -s- give shoutouts to the staff
    members and the interns
  • Not Synced
and statements like, "Jessica and I
    are both people too"
  • Not Synced
    And they mention Jessica neglecting
    her own wedding because she's
  • Not Synced
working so hard on this project.
    ]
  • Not Synced
They also talk about Peter missing friends
and family members' major life events
  • Not Synced
due to trying to make this product happen.
  • Not Synced
What we like to think that if you were
able to see our day to day,
  • Not Synced
those of you who feel the need to
be critical, would be a little less so.
  • Not Synced
And this is when there's a complete
    tone-shift in the comment section
  • Not Synced
    underneath the project.
  • Not Synced
The comments are so kind, and so
    patient, there's even people saying
  • Not Synced
that they expected the products to ship
    after September,
  • Not Synced
because a lot of kickstarters ship late
  • Not Synced
which I found isn't necessarily true,
  • Not Synced
but people were really nice to Peter
  • Not Synced
after his post. Just like, yeah you are
human, let's give you some time
  • Not Synced
I can see that you're trying,
    like, you're doing your best
  • Not Synced
    and things are coming.
    It'll be soon.
  • Not Synced
Everybody is just being super super
    nice to them.
  • Not Synced
But one backer, Ariel, she really
summed things up, but in a very
  • Not Synced
    very polite way.
    She asked questions like,
  • Not Synced
i-she wanted to know the dates of the
extra promises, like the Glamour Doll's
  • Not Synced
Gypsy eyeliner pencil, the vintage Lisa
Frank item that they were promised.
  • Not Synced
The nail file, and the digital background,
and of course, her questions went
  • Not Synced
    completely unanswered.
  • Not Synced
    On September 21st, they said,
    Thank you so much,
  • Not Synced
the eyeshadow and the bronzer production
have been completed. We have them.
  • Not Synced
They say, as a huge thank you for
    supporting us throughout this journey,
  • Not Synced
we've decided to ship out the orders early
for those of you who backed a tier
  • Not Synced
that includes them, or added them to their
    pledge afterward in backerkit.
  • Not Synced
But you and I both know, that this is
    not on time.
  • Not Synced
October 1st is technically late, because
the estimated ship time was September
  • Not Synced
and there shipping them in October,
  • Not Synced
but they're using this language on purpose
    to manipulate the backers
  • Not Synced
and make them feel good that they're
    getting things early.
  • Not Synced
Because what I think they meant, is that
they had intended to send out the packages
  • Not Synced
when they were all completed, but they're
    sending these particular items because
  • Not Synced
they're ready out before the rest of the
    products are ready.
  • Not Synced
Glamour Dolls makes it sound like this is
    - like- a big reward,
  • Not Synced
this is something we're doing for you
because we care about you -
  • Not Synced
No, this is something that you
    owe to people.
  • Not Synced
This is not - this is not a -
    a luxury.
  • Not Synced
This is not a super kind thing to do.
  • Not Synced
This is just what you should be doing.
  • Not Synced
    Then things switched with the
    digital background.
  • Not Synced
    Basically what they were saying,
was that they wanted to give an update
  • Not Synced
on the digital background and they
said that Lisa had some concerns
  • Not Synced
    about her artwork getting stolen.
  • Not Synced
I don't know, I think if anyone wanted
    to steal Lisa Frank's artwork
  • Not Synced
it'd be pretty easy to do,
    but I digress.
  • Not Synced
So anyway, they were worried about
    this digital background
  • Not Synced
being stolen and then put on
    things illegally,
  • Not Synced
so they didn't want to do a digital
    background, instead
  • Not Synced
Lisa was going to go in to her vault
and she found these vintage postcards.
  • Not Synced
And these vintage postcards were going
to be shipped out instead of the digital
  • Not Synced
    background to anybody that pledged
    5 dollars or more.
  • Not Synced
So every single person that pledged
was going to get one of these.
  • Not Synced
And 25 people would have one that was
handsigned personal signed by Lisa herself
  • Not Synced
This postcard was supposed to go out
once all of the orders, all the products,
  • Not Synced
had been made and the final orders
    were being shipped.
  • Not Synced
    Then they dropped drawing designs
of the caps of the nail polishes
  • Not Synced
and I was thinking as I was looking at
this, I was like didn't they just say
  • Not Synced
like a week ago, that everything
    was already designed, that they
  • Not Synced
    already had all the mockups?
  • Not Synced
    Apparently that was a lie.
  • Not Synced
And would you be shocked to learn
  • Not Synced
that the shipping of the bronzers
    doesn't happen on October 1st?
  • Not Synced
    'Cause it doesn't happen.
  • Not Synced
In October, the community is sent a poll
for the design for the vegan make-up bag
  • Not Synced
they had a choice of zoomer and zorbit,
    who are aliens,
  • Not Synced
dancing dolphins, or Sky the Pegasus.
  • Not Synced
We also saw the first physical samples
    of the Naturally Glam
  • Not Synced
and the bold and bright palates,
    so freaking cute.
  • Not Synced
The community loses their minds over
these palettes, comments are lighting up
  • Not Synced
about people so excited to get these
    palettes in their hands.
  • Not Synced
And like I said, the eyeshadow and
    bronzers, that stuff did not
  • Not Synced
end up shipping on October 1st,
    because Glamour Dolls says that
  • Not Synced
    they were stuck in customs..
    for two weeks.
  • Not Synced
They said in an update, being as today is
10 26, we expect the product to arrive
  • Not Synced
to the shipping facility and ship to you
    on October 31st.
  • Not Synced
And therefor, you should expect the makeup
there on your doorstep during the first
  • Not Synced
    week of November.
  • Not Synced
Are you surprised that this did
    actually happen?
  • Not Synced
    Me too.
  • Not Synced
    [laughs]
  • Not Synced
In November we get more information
  • Not Synced
about the two brushes, the eyeshadow,
    and the bronzer.
  • Not Synced
They talk about how the products
    had already been in production
  • Not Synced
    when the kickstarter started,
but where Peter shot himself in the foot
  • Not Synced
was because in May he said that the
backers would be getting the products
  • Not Synced
first. And he should've known not to say
that because he knew that they were
  • Not Synced
gonna end up in Ipsy bags before the
  • Not Synced
backers got them, but he didn't tell
    anybody that.
  • Not Synced
He just lied to everybody instead and then
when we found out they were in Ipsy bags
  • Not Synced
    we naturally freaked out.
  • Not Synced
Because not only were the blush brushes
in the April Ipsy bags, but the bronzers
  • Not Synced
were in the November Ipsy bags!
  • Not Synced
"Oh my gosh, is this a Lisa Frank?
[gasp] Glamour Dolls bitten and bronze
  • Not Synced
matte bronzer!? Awhile ago we got a Lisa
Frank brush in our Ipsy bag,
  • Not Synced
I wonder if this is from the same line.
I'm not really expecting much from this
  • Not Synced
bronzer, because I feel like it's just
    more on the gimmicky side,
  • Not Synced
But I hope that it works amazingly well.
  • Not Synced
    Color is really promising!
  • Not Synced
It's not too warm and it's not
    too cool.
  • Not Synced
    I'm gonna swatch it out.
  • Not Synced
This feels a little bit powdery.
  • Not Synced
Ooh, it actually feels really nice and
    smooth on the skin.
  • Not Synced
Granted, I did just put that hand cream on
so I don't really know what that says
  • Not Synced
    but it feels really buttery-ish
    on the skin. Feels nice!
  • Not Synced
The color is pretty good too.
  • Not Synced
    If you're fair though, I don't think
this is going to work for you
  • Not Synced
because it's showing up on my really
tan hand, so if you're fair,
  • Not Synced
I don't think this bronzer is for you.
  • Not Synced
    But it's really F'in cute.
  • Not Synced
    I wish the actual packaging
looked as cute as the box,
  • Not Synced
but I mean, it's still pretty cute"
  • Not Synced
As a backer, what we were thinking
was that Glamour Dolls took our money
  • Not Synced
from the Kickstarter and made these
bronzers and made the brushes and made the
  • Not Synced
eyeshadows with our money and then sold
them to Ipsy. Which is actually not what
  • Not Synced
happened. I put all of the timelines
together and it turns out they did not use
  • Not Synced
Kickstarter money in order to fund
    these products.
  • Not Synced
They had used a different website.
    It was called: "Kickfurther".
  • Not Synced
    Kickfurther - it still exists.
It's kind of like Kickstarter, but instead
  • Not Synced
of backing a project and getting product,
you back a project and you get interest
  • Not Synced
    on your investment.
It's basically a way that small businesses
  • Not Synced
can fund the production of something
and then pay the investors back.
  • Not Synced
So I went over to the Glamour Dolls'
Kickfurther page and what I found out was
  • Not Synced
that they had done a Kickfurther campaign
    to produce the blush brushes.
  • Not Synced
They raised $166,000 and they paid
those backers back about two weeks after
  • Not Synced
the Kickstarter ended in April of 2017.
They ran a second Kickfurther campaign
  • Not Synced
that was running about the same time as
    the Kickstarter campaign was running.
  • Not Synced
It was from Feb 13th of 2017 to
March 6th of 2017. This was to fund the
  • Not Synced
    production of the eyeshadow
and the bronzer. Because with the money
  • Not Synced
they got from the blush brush they were
also able to make the crease brush.
  • Not Synced
    There's a lot of business-y language
over there and I'll be honest,
  • Not Synced
    I don't understand a lot of what
    they're talking about.
  • Not Synced
But I will tell you what I did understand.
So, he's basically saying people are
  • Not Synced
concerned that they're not going to get
their money back. And he's reassuring them
  • Not Synced
and basically saying they've got these
two purchase orders - they're very very
  • Not Synced
blurry, there's stuff that's knocked out
of it, but we know now in hindsight that
  • Not Synced
the brand that ordered the highlight
    and the bronzer was Ipsy.
  • Not Synced
You can kind of make out in the very
blurry paperwork that Ipsy paid $378,750
  • Not Synced
for the bronzer. Same for the eyeshadows.
And that was for 757,500 units of each
  • Not Synced
    product. But! They were not
    going to pay that money
  • Not Synced
    until the product was delivered.
That's why they needed the Kickfurther
  • Not Synced
people- was to actually make the products.
Once they actually delivered them, then
  • Not Synced
they would get the money from Ipsy and
they could pay the Kickfurther backers
  • Not Synced
    back.
So here's the math broken down:
  • Not Synced
Glamour Dolls raises $313,000 from the
Kickfurther. They spend that money to
  • Not Synced
make the bronzer and the eyeshadow.
Ipsy pays them two payments of $378,750.
  • Not Synced
    Which is $757,500 total
    for those two products.
  • Not Synced
Then they have to pay interest to the
    Kickfurther backers.
  • Not Synced
They pay out $354,000 about to those
backers. That's $41,000 in profit for the
  • Not Synced
    Kickfurther people, but that gives
    Glamour Dolls about $400,000 from
  • Not Synced
those two products from the Ipsy deal.
Plus they still have that $350,000 from
  • Not Synced
the Kickstarter in order to make products.
So what happened to all of that money -
  • Not Synced
    where did they spend it?!
I have it- I know exactly where
  • Not Synced
    they spent it!
I have to... but we have to get there.
  • Not Synced
So remember: the backers over on the
Kickstarter have no idea any of this
  • Not Synced
    Kickfurther stuff was happening.
And Glamour Dolls had no obligation
  • Not Synced
    to share it -
    it wasn't our business.
  • Not Synced
But this was happening behind the scenes.
In mid November, the backers at the
  • Not Synced
$100 and $200 level, as well as
people who added on the bronzer or
  • Not Synced
the eyeshadow are starting to get their
products in the mail. Remember they
  • Not Synced
had ordered these back between February
and April - it's now November and they've
  • Not Synced
    finally got some products.
And they also have their vintage
  • Not Synced
    Lisa Frank postcard.
Glamour Dolls seemed a little bit "Oooo"
  • Not Synced
    about that because the postcards
technically weren't supposed to go out yet.
  • Not Synced
    The postcards were supposed to
    be in the final package.
  • Not Synced
So what they told the backers was:
if you got a postcard in this order,
  • Not Synced
    you'll get a second one
    in your next order.
  • Not Synced
That's the order where we're going to ship
    you out everything.
  • Not Synced
And this is when Glamour Dolls is forced
to admit that they are selling the
  • Not Synced
Lisa Frank branded stuff - the stuff
that's supposed to be in the hands of the
  • Not Synced
backers first- over at Hot Topic
    and Dolls Kill.
  • Not Synced
    Because people found the products
    available over on Hot Topic!
  • Not Synced
But they spin it - they're SUCH
manipulative liars, I swear. This is
  • Not Synced
    so awful.
    This is what they said:
  • Not Synced
"The eyeshadow that leaked on Hot Topic
that some of you eagle eyes caught (we are
  • Not Synced
so impressed!) was supposed to be a
teaser promo for what's to come.
  • Not Synced
And we were 100% not aware that they would
be breaking the news so soon.
  • Not Synced
We're of course THRILLED to have such an
amazing partnership, but we truly had
  • Not Synced
had no idea they were launching this
    promo so early.
  • Not Synced
Now that the cat's out of the bag, so to
speak, we'd love to formally introduce you
  • Not Synced
to the new single eyeshadow shades in
the Lisa Frank x Glamour Dolls line."
  • Not Synced
followed by swatches of two shadows,
    not one.
  • Not Synced
This second single shadow was never
a part of the original list of products.
  • Not Synced
Why are they making more products?
It's because they could make money off
  • Not Synced
    of Hot Topic customers.
    That's why they made more.
  • Not Synced
Because apparently they need more money.
But then it gets so, so much worse.
  • Not Synced
This was when I went on my Twitter and I
was like, "This is f*cking ridiculous!"
  • Not Synced
If you were following me on Twitter
and you saw me freaking out on Twitter
  • Not Synced
    about what I was finding,
this is what I had found.
  • Not Synced
    Because the postcards. The postcards.
  • Not Synced
    Ok, I know it's just a postcard,
    but it's wild.
  • Not Synced
    So the postcards were coming
    damaged.
  • Not Synced
    Some of them were ripped,
    some of them were creased,
  • Not Synced
people were saying they got a signed one
and it was ripped and they wanted
  • Not Synced
another one, but then they were worried
they wouldn't get another signed one and
  • Not Synced
how could the signed one be ripped?
    It's a vintage postcard - these can't be reproduced.
  • Not Synced
But was it? Because people noticed that
there was a QR code on the postcard.
  • Not Synced
These are supposed to be vintage
and there was a QR code...
  • Not Synced
    ...on the postcard.
  • Not Synced
    And I sh*t you not
this is what Glamour Dolls said:
  • Not Synced
"QR codes actually came out in the 90's,
if ya can believe it. These postcards
  • Not Synced
    are right from the vault."
  • Not Synced
So, I had to look that up
    because I was like,
  • Not Synced
"Are you being for serious right now?"
    (laughs)
  • Not Synced
He's right - the QR codes did come
    out in the 90's.
  • Not Synced
But nobody had any ability to use them
    until smartphones had cameras.
  • Not Synced
According to the article on Microsoft,
"In 2002, Sharp introduced the first
  • Not Synced
cellphone with a QR scanner and competing
    cell phone companies followed suit.
  • Not Synced
Eventually everyone who owned a smartphone
possessed a QR scanner in their pocket."
  • Not Synced
So at the very earliest, the postcards
    were 15 years old.
  • Not Synced
But I will tell you there is a 0% chance-
a 0% chance- that these postcards
  • Not Synced
    were 15 years old.
And the reason why was because the QR code
  • Not Synced
conveniently took you to a Lisa Frank app.
Which definitely did not exist in 2002.
  • Not Synced
I found the two apps that she
    had available.
  • Not Synced
The apps at the time were the
"Lisa Frank Pick 'n Share", developed
  • Not Synced
in 2012 per this Buzzfeed article.
Apparently it sucked according to them.
  • Not Synced
The other app was called "Zoom 'n Color"
which launched in February of 2013.
  • Not Synced
So unless somebody calls something vintage
    that is five years old,
  • Not Synced
these sh*t are not vintage. At all.
    Not even close.
  • Not Synced
But it gets worse. It gets worse!
    Not only weren't they vintage,
  • Not Synced
    they weren't signed!
  • Not Synced
Some people were looking at their
their signature because a lot of people
  • Not Synced
in the group seemed to have
    gotten signatures.
  • Not Synced
There were 1700 people who should have
    gotten these postcards because they
  • Not Synced
pledged that $100 tier or more.
    At least 1700 people.
  • Not Synced
But it seemed like almost everybody,
    if not everybody, commenting was
  • Not Synced
getting one of these 25 rare
    signed postcards.
  • Not Synced
    Something was going on.
There was a woman named, Calli,
  • Not Synced
who didn't get her postcard yet and
was seeing all these people commenting
  • Not Synced
that they'd gotten a signed one and she
    was like,
  • Not Synced
"Oh I guess I'm not going to get a signed
    one with my order."
  • Not Synced
And Glamour Dolls was like, "Yeah, you
do have a chance because maybe not
  • Not Synced
all the 25 have been sent out. We're
not sure because Lisa sent them directly
  • Not Synced
to the warehouse and we don't know which
    ones went into the boxes."
  • Not Synced
    And Calli says, "Yes!! Definitely
still a chance. Realistically we won't
  • Not Synced
know who received the 25 postcards until
they're all sent out once all the
  • Not Synced
    products are through production and
    shipped out. Talk about suspense!!"
  • Not Synced
But we know how many of them were signed.
    They were all signed.
