This is Actually the WORST Makeup Launch EVER: Lisa Frank X Glamour Dolls | Behind the Controversy
-
0:00 - 0:02Y'all, when I started researching
for this video, -
0:02 - 0:05I honestly thought
it was gonna be faster -
0:05 - 0:06(laughs)
-
0:06 - 0:08I thought that I knew everything
-
0:08 - 0:09I genuinely did
-
0:09 - 0:12because I was a backer for the Lisa Frank
-
0:12 - 0:14Glamour Dolls campaign back in 2017.
-
0:14 - 0:17I really thought I knew the whole story
-
0:17 - 0:21I watched other peoples videos on it and
I was in it! -
0:21 - 0:24I did all of the things.
I was part of it. -
0:24 - 0:25My friend
-
0:25 - 0:28Oh my gosh, I did not know..
-
0:28 - 0:31There was so much that I did not know
-
0:31 - 0:34It is so fucked up.
Like, I am just... -
0:34 - 0:37I am absolutely blown away.
Because the thing is, -
0:37 - 0:38the more I started looking into it,
-
0:38 - 0:40the more things that I found,
-
0:40 - 0:41and the more connections I
-
0:41 - 0:42was making and I was like
-
0:42 - 0:46" Oh my gosh!"
This is a story, my friend. -
0:46 - 0:47There is so much that happened
-
0:47 - 0:51in the Lisa Frank x Glamour Dolls Collab
that we did not know -
0:51 - 0:54because everything wasn't laid out
through hindsight, -
0:54 - 0:55we know hindsight is 20/20.
-
0:55 - 0:57Well now we're seeing 20/20 my friend.
-
0:57 - 1:00And the rainbows are not rainbowing,
-
1:00 - 1:03and the unicorns and the pegasus, and
-
1:03 - 1:07they're not-it's not good, it's very bad.
-
1:07 - 1:09So, if you are ready to go on this
-
1:09 - 1:11wild journey with me,
-
1:11 - 1:13this is Behind the Controversy.
-
1:13 - 1:15And its starting right now.
-
1:15 - 1:16[Music]
-
1:19 - 1:21I would dare to say, pretty much
-
1:21 - 1:22everybody watching this
-
1:22 - 1:25video has been online and seen something
-
1:25 - 1:28that you never intended to purchase,
-
1:28 - 1:30but you had that impulse feeling. You
-
1:30 - 1:31had that feeling because,
-
1:31 - 1:33for some reason, you didn't know
-
1:33 - 1:34that you needed this,
-
1:34 - 1:35and you needed to buy it.
-
1:35 - 1:38Maybe, it solves some kind
of problem in your life. -
1:38 - 1:41Maybe, it was some kind of advancement
on something you already knew, or -
1:41 - 1:44maybe it was due to nostalgia. Something
-
1:44 - 1:46that reminded you of your childhood, or
-
1:46 - 1:48just when you were younger,
-
1:48 - 1:50something that made you feel happy
-
1:50 - 1:51during that time.
-
1:51 - 1:53And maybe its even something that made
-
1:53 - 1:57an entire generation feel happy.
-
1:57 - 2:00That's the feeling that the backers had
-
2:00 - 2:02when we saw that Lisa Frank was
-
2:02 - 2:04coming out with makeup with a company
-
2:04 - 2:05named Glamour Dolls.
-
2:05 - 2:07Now, we did not-a lot of us had never
-
2:07 - 2:08heard of Glamour Dolls.
-
2:08 - 2:10Imma be 100%, I'd never heard of
Glamour Dolls -
2:10 - 2:12before.
But I had heard of Lisa Frank -
2:12 - 2:13and I was freaking out, because
-
2:13 - 2:15I was a sticker collector.
-
2:15 - 2:17I will tell you though,
-
2:17 - 2:18the scratch-and-sniff stickers
-
2:18 - 2:20were my faves, but Lisa Frank
-
2:20 - 2:22stickers were super cool too.
-
2:22 - 2:24They were very, very popular
-
2:24 - 2:25and that's the way it was
-
2:25 - 2:27for a lot of people that were Gen X
-
2:27 - 2:30or older millennials,
-
2:30 - 2:32mostly, probably mid-millennials as well.
-
2:32 - 2:34If it wasn't the stickers,
-
2:34 - 2:36maybe it was the school supplies.
-
2:36 - 2:37(laughs)
-
2:37 - 2:38Because Trapper Keepers were a
-
2:38 - 2:41thing. It was not just a regular notebook.
-
2:41 - 2:42It was a cool notebook.
-
2:42 - 2:44And they were kind of pricey,
-
2:44 - 2:47so if you had a Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper,
-
2:47 - 2:48you were cool.
Or if you were -
2:48 - 2:51like me, you had a knock-off
-
2:51 - 2:53version from K-mart, which made you
-
2:53 - 2:54moderately cool.
-
2:54 - 2:55Not really.
-
2:55 - 2:57But we pretended we were.
-
2:57 - 2:58"I'll never forget the day
-
2:58 - 3:00I got stuck on Lisa Frank.
-
3:00 - 3:02The stickers were so cool! The colors
-
3:02 - 3:03were awesome.
-
3:03 - 3:05I gotta find more. So I go to the store,
-
3:05 - 3:07and wow! There's tons of awesome
-
3:07 - 3:09Lisa Frank stuff. I gotta have it!
-
3:09 - 3:10What more can I say?
-
3:10 - 3:12Pretty soon my friends,
Ashley and Lindsay, -
3:12 - 3:14are going Lisa Frank crazy too."
-
3:14 - 3:16And like I mentioned earlier, the company
-
3:16 - 3:18that started all of this wasn't super well
-
3:18 - 3:20known.
They were called Glamour Dolls, -
3:20 - 3:23so they had to get their name out there
-
3:23 - 3:24somehow.
-
3:24 - 3:27So, they used an uber popular
-
3:27 - 3:29YouTuber at the time
-
3:29 - 3:30named Kandee Johnson.
-
3:30 - 3:33And Kandee Johnson was the
perfect influencer for this -
3:33 - 3:34campaign
I don't even -
3:34 - 3:36know if we were calling
people influencers at that point. -
3:36 - 3:39But anyway, my point is
that Kandee Johnson -
3:39 - 3:41was top of her game.
Everybody freaking -
3:41 - 3:42loved Kandee she was like the
-
3:42 - 3:43sweetest kindest person.
-
3:43 - 3:45And she has this really light voice.
-
3:45 - 3:47And everybody freakin' loved Kandee.
-
3:47 - 3:50"Hi guys, 2016 is behind us, but I am
-
3:50 - 3:51gonna share with you
-
3:51 - 3:54my best in beauty of 2016.
-
3:54 - 3:56Make sure if you have not subscribed,
-
3:56 - 3:58subscribe, join the family,
-
3:58 - 4:00become a Kandeecorn. Kandeecorn,
-
4:00 - 4:03like a unicorn, or like candy corn.
I don't know ill have -
4:03 - 4:04to think about that one.
-
4:04 - 4:07And follow me on Snapchat Twitter
Instagram Facebook for all kinds of -
4:07 - 4:08different and awesome things"
-
4:08 - 4:10So when Kandee announced the collaboration
-
4:10 - 4:12between Glamour Dolls and
-
4:12 - 4:15Lisa Frank,
people lost their minds. They opened -
4:15 - 4:20their wallets to the tune of over $300,000
-
4:20 - 4:23Almost 6,000 people backed this project.
Now if you don't know what im -
4:23 - 4:25talking about as far as Kickstarter and
-
4:25 - 4:26backing a project,
-
4:26 - 4:28basically, it's kind of like a GoFundMe
-
4:28 - 4:29kind of thing, but for a business.
-
4:29 - 4:31So the business wants to make a product
-
4:31 - 4:32but don't have the money.
-
4:32 - 4:35So, they go and they tell people,
-
4:35 - 4:37"Hey, we wanna make this product,
-
4:37 - 4:40if you back us, if you give us money
-
4:40 - 4:43at different tiers, you'll get X products
-
4:43 - 4:45for helping us to create the products."
This story has -
4:45 - 4:48been told many times before.
-
4:48 - 4:50But I don't think it has been told
-
4:50 - 4:52in this way, because what I'm gonna
-
4:52 - 4:55focus on in this video is
the point of view -
4:55 - 4:57of the backers. What was it like to be
-
4:57 - 5:00a backer from the beginning, and what
-
5:00 - 5:03kind of tactics did Glamour Dolls use
-
5:03 - 5:07to keep us hanging on
for well over a year? -
5:07 - 5:09Where many, many people, including me,
-
5:09 - 5:12did not ask for refunds even after
-
5:12 - 5:15they were over a year late in
sending out products. Some -
5:15 - 5:16of you are probably
-
5:16 - 5:17sitting there thinking
-
5:17 - 5:19like, "Why didn't you know?"
-
5:19 - 5:22like, "Why didn't you see the red flags?"
-
5:22 - 5:23Like, "What happened?"
-
5:23 - 5:24I'm going to sh- tell you.
-
5:24 - 5:26I'm going to share with you what
-
5:26 - 5:28they did to us.
Im pointing -
5:28 - 5:29down because of a 22 page
-
5:29 - 5:31script here with all the fucked-up shit
-
5:31 - 5:32they did because
-
5:32 - 5:34if you haven't figured it out yet,
-
5:34 - 5:36yeah, we didn't get anything.
-
5:36 - 5:37We got [chuckles]
-
5:37 - 5:38Well, some people got a little
-
5:38 - 5:40bit, but I didn't get anything
-
5:40 - 5:41and the vast majority of people got
-
5:41 - 5:43absolutely nothing.
The people -
5:43 - 5:45that didget things, got very, very little.
-
5:45 - 5:48It's layered. It's multi-layered.
-
5:48 - 5:50So let's just jump in
to the very beginning, -
5:50 - 5:52which was the start of the Kickstarter,
-
5:52 - 5:55in February of 2017.
-
5:55 - 6:02[Music]
-
6:02 - 6:04Something you might want to remember
-
6:04 - 6:07about 2017 was that we didn't have
-
6:07 - 6:10the inundation of weird collabs
-
6:10 - 6:11like we do now. I mean,
-
6:11 - 6:13the Glamlite Pizza palette was still about
-
6:13 - 6:15a year away, and that one broke
-
6:15 - 6:16the internet.
-
6:16 - 6:18It was like the first really weird collab
-
6:18 - 6:20that people were like "That's odd, but
-
6:20 - 6:21also kind of cool". The
-
6:21 - 6:22kind of collabs we were getting
-
6:22 - 6:24at the time were things like,
-
6:24 - 6:25Wonder Woman and Luxie
-
6:25 - 6:27and PUR and the Trolls Movie.
-
6:27 - 6:30A makeup collaboration with Lisa Frank
-
6:30 - 6:32had literally never been done before,
-
6:32 - 6:34so people, naturally, were very excited
-
6:34 - 6:37due to that strong feeling of nostalgia.
-
6:37 - 6:40The Kickstarter launches with a maximum
-
6:40 - 6:44bid of $40 to get a few products
-
6:44 - 6:47and a goal of $30,000.
-
6:47 - 6:49And the lowest buy-in to get something was
-
6:49 - 6:51pretty cheap, at $5 for what they
-
6:51 - 6:53called, a digital background.
-
6:53 - 6:55It was an image that you could use as your
-
6:55 - 6:56background on your phone,
-
6:56 - 6:58or on your computer, or whatever.
-
6:58 - 7:01The Kickstarter ran for
45 days from February -
7:01 - 7:0616th of 2017 to April 2nd of 2017.
-
7:06 - 7:08It's also important to talk about the fact
-
7:08 - 7:10that Glamour Dolls said that backers
-
7:10 - 7:12would have a say in the products
-
7:12 - 7:13being created.
-
7:13 - 7:16That there would be polling and voting and
-
7:16 - 7:17people would get sneak peaks.
-
7:17 - 7:19People would also get the products at
-
7:19 - 7:20a discount, because the products
-
7:20 - 7:22would eventually end up at retailers
-
7:22 - 7:24but the backers, because you bought
-
7:24 - 7:26it in a bundle, would get things cheaper
-
7:26 - 7:27than you would get if you bought
-
7:27 - 7:28the products individually.
-
7:28 - 7:31Just 3 days into the campaign,
-
7:31 - 7:33Glamour Dolls posted their update,
-
7:33 - 7:36and they were so, so excited.
-
7:36 - 7:40They said that Lisa was, quote, "opening
-
7:40 - 7:41her vault and would be sending
-
7:41 - 7:441000 vintage goodies to be included,
-
7:44 - 7:47for the first 1000 backers".
-
7:47 - 7:49They promised a second treat,
-
7:49 - 7:52if they hit 2000 backers, and that Lisa
-
7:52 - 7:54had something really special planned
-
7:54 - 7:56if they made it to 10,000.
-
7:56 - 7:58They're just hyping the heck out of the
-
7:58 - 8:00backers, because they also promised
-
8:00 - 8:02something called stretch rewards.
-
8:02 - 8:04And they way they described it is not
-
8:04 - 8:06how it turned out.
-
8:06 - 8:08Basically, what they said is that
-
8:08 - 8:10if the backers, as a community, complete
-
8:10 - 8:12a set of challenges, that something will
-
8:12 - 8:15be unlocked. And this something was going
-
8:15 - 8:17to be very, very exciting.
-
8:17 - 8:19Challenges included tasks like creating
-
8:19 - 8:22a Lisa Frank-inspired makeup look
-
8:22 - 8:24and taking a picture of it, writing a rap
-
8:24 - 8:26about glitter and tweeting it. And they
-
8:26 - 8:28even had a challenge where a person
-
8:28 - 8:31had to create a foil unicorn horn and put
-
8:31 - 8:33it on their head and take a picture
-
8:33 - 8:35of themselves in public, wearing
-
8:35 - 8:36the unicorn horn.
-
8:36 - 8:3940 people had to take a picture of their
-
8:39 - 8:43vintage Lisa Frank products and submit
-
8:43 - 8:43those pictures.
-
8:43 - 8:45See, the community's participating,
-
8:45 - 8:47they're excited, they're talking about all
-
8:47 - 8:49the things that they're doing because
-
8:49 - 8:51in every comment section under each post
-
8:51 - 8:52there's a place for people of the
-
8:52 - 8:54community to communicate, to talk about
-
8:54 - 8:56what's happening. Its almost like a
-
8:56 - 8:58little, not a message board, but just
-
8:58 - 9:00kind of a place to dump things that people
-
9:00 - 9:02were thinking after the update.
-
9:02 - 9:04So people are hyped about this, they're
-
9:04 - 9:06so excited about their stretch reward.
-
9:06 - 9:09And this is the first big disappointment
-
9:09 - 9:10for the backers.
-
9:10 - 9:12Because, it was not an extra item added to
-
9:12 - 9:15the bag, it wasn't even a reward, because
-
9:15 - 9:17when you think of a reward, you think
-
9:17 - 9:18that you're getting something.
-
9:18 - 9:21What it actually was, a mock-up photo
-
9:21 - 9:26of an image of three-piece nail polish set
-
9:26 - 9:28and this is the kicker about it,
-
9:28 - 9:30no pun intended, that the nail polish set
-
9:30 - 9:34wasn't included in any of the levels,
-
9:34 - 9:36so nobody that had put in any money
-
9:36 - 9:38at this point was going to get the
-
9:38 - 9:40nail polishes that were featured
-
9:40 - 9:42in the picture, in order to get the
-
9:42 - 9:45nail polishes, you had to now increase
-
9:45 - 9:47your bid by at least $15
-
9:47 - 9:49because Glamour Dolls had just created
-
9:49 - 9:52new tiers that required more investment
-
9:52 - 9:55and the backers were like "What?"
-
9:55 - 9:57"That's it?"
-
9:57 - 10:01What we just worked so hard for, we just
-
10:01 - 10:03did all the challenges, 40 of us sent
-
10:03 - 10:05pictures of our Lisa Frank stuff that we
-
10:05 - 10:06dug out of our basement or out
-
10:06 - 10:08of our attics, and we found the stuff and
-
10:08 - 10:09we took the picture and we did
-
10:09 - 10:12all the work, and we got a drawing of
-
10:12 - 10:13something we're not getting unless we
-
10:13 - 10:14spend more money?
-
10:14 - 10:17That's what happened.
-
10:17 - 10:19I'm gonna put the whole post on the screen
-
10:19 - 10:21for you to read, but I'll read one of the
-
10:21 - 10:22key points.
-
10:22 - 10:24"We started this collection with a handful
-
10:24 - 10:26of products, but a big part of this
-
10:26 - 10:27Kickstarter is expanding the collection
-
10:27 - 10:29with the community and developing new
-
10:29 - 10:30products to add to it.
-
10:30 - 10:33What maybe separates this Kickstarter from
-
10:33 - 10:35others is that we don't know how big the
-
10:35 - 10:37collection will ultimately be.
-
10:37 - 10:40It all depends on community engagement".
-
10:41 - 10:43But the thing was is that they told people
-
10:43 - 10:44how big it was going to be.
-
10:44 - 10:46Because that's what they put their money
-
10:46 - 10:48in for because it said if you put the
-
10:48 - 10:50money in for this amount, then you'll get
-
10:50 - 10:53this stuff. And now she's saying that it
-
10:53 - 10:54may get even bigger than that.
-
10:54 - 10:56Because what was about to happen is they
-
10:56 - 10:58were about to add even more tiers with
-
10:58 - 11:00even more products.
-
11:00 - 11:02The explanation continued with this,
-
11:02 - 11:05which was the kicker, "We would have told
-
11:05 - 11:07you from the beginning...
" that basically it -
11:07 - 11:10was only a drawing of a mock-up of
-
11:10 - 11:12something that no one was getting yet,
-
11:12 - 11:14"...but we only developed it last week.
-
11:14 - 11:16In response to fan engagement after we
-
11:16 - 11:18researched cost formulations. For many
-
11:18 - 11:20people, the challenges were a fun way to
-
11:20 - 11:22unlock it and we'll be clear going
-
11:22 - 11:24forward so you can choose whether
-
11:24 - 11:25to participate".
-
11:25 - 11:27Unlock what? They unlocked a picture of
-
11:27 - 11:29something they had to pay more for.
-
11:29 - 11:32Thing is is that kind of the way that
-
11:32 - 11:36these stretch rewards work, but they
-
11:36 - 11:38didn't explain it to people that way.
-
11:38 - 11:40When people see a stretch reward, they're
-
11:40 - 11:42going to think that they're getting
-
11:42 - 11:44something as a reward.
-
11:44 - 11:46What it is traditionally called is
-
11:46 - 11:49a "stretch goal" and that is not something
-
11:49 - 11:51that is officially part of Kickstarter,
-
11:51 - 11:53but something that Kickstarter campaigns
-
11:53 - 11:56do often. They usually call them "goals",
-
11:56 - 11:59not "rewards", and from
what I was reading, -
11:59 - 12:01a lot of the stretch
goals typically happen -
12:01 - 12:04after the backers already have their first
-
12:04 - 12:06set of products because they have gotten
-
12:06 - 12:08their products, they're excited about
-
12:08 - 12:10it they're loving it, and now they want
-
12:10 - 12:11something more.
-
12:11 - 12:13So in order to stretch their amount that
-
12:13 - 12:15they've collected
and create more products, -
12:15 - 12:18they have a stretch goal. So let's say, If
-
12:18 - 12:21I get 100 people to donate $20 more
-
12:21 - 12:24we can create X products, so lets see if
-
12:24 - 12:26we can get to our stretch goal.
-
12:26 - 12:29Rather than, it's a mystery, it's a game,
-
12:29 - 12:31it's a reward. It wasn't.
-
12:31 - 12:32They just completely misrepresented
-
12:32 - 12:35that to the backers. But I'm telling you,
-
12:35 - 12:38that snafu is mild, compared to
-
12:38 - 12:40what is coming next, like that-that's just
-
12:40 - 12:43extremely minor.
It gets so, so much worse. -
12:43 - 12:45So trying to backtrack, Glamour Dolls
-
12:45 - 12:48tells their backers, "Hey, if we get to
-
12:48 - 12:523,500 backers, then we're going to include
-
12:52 - 12:56in everybody's bag, the first 3500 people,
-
12:56 - 12:59a Lisa Frank designed crease brush.
-
12:59 - 13:00Sometimes they call this a crease brush,
-
13:00 - 13:02sometimes they call it a blending brush,
-
13:02 - 13:04it's the same brush.
-
13:04 - 13:06The promise of the free crease brush,
-
13:06 - 13:08I am not kidding you, according to the
-
13:08 - 13:11Kickstarter, brought them past that
-
13:11 - 13:153,500 backer mark in 24 hours.
-
13:15 - 13:17So at this point in time, highest level
-
13:17 - 13:19includes everything that they've said
-
13:19 - 13:22so far, plus the nail polishes at a $60
-
13:22 - 13:24price point. But people were still mad,
-
13:24 - 13:26people were like, "This is not what you
-
13:26 - 13:28said it was going to be, sir, ma'am, sir".
-
13:28 - 13:30So in response, Glamour Dolls was like,
-
13:30 - 13:32"Ok, well, we will add something else,
-
13:32 - 13:34we'll add something from our own line",
-
13:34 - 13:35It was what they called their
-
13:35 - 13:37"Gypsy Eyeliners" to the first
-
13:37 - 13:402,000 Backers who complete a survey
-
13:40 - 13:42to pick their preferred color of this
-
13:42 - 13:44liner. They were going to add that into
-
13:44 - 13:45the boxes.
-
13:45 - 13:46And that, I think, kind of
-
13:46 - 13:47calmed people down a little bit,
-
13:47 - 13:49they were like, "Ok, that feels more like
-
13:49 - 13:51a reward." And people started getting
-
13:51 - 13:54really excited about
everything all over again. -
13:54 - 13:55A backer named Marsha said,
-
13:55 - 13:57"Wow, thanks yet again, the entire vibe
-
13:57 - 13:59of this campaign totally reminds me of
-
13:59 - 14:01what it felt like to open my noisy
-
14:01 - 14:02Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper, write with
-
14:02 - 14:04my pencils, play with my erasers (that I
-
14:04 - 14:06never used to keep pristine like dolls
-
14:06 - 14:09lol) etc. in school. -- It made me smile
-
14:09 - 14:11and dream! I feel like we're all reliving
-
14:11 - 14:13our childhoods through this campaign, and
-
14:13 - 14:15your team is making this fun! I'm hoping
-
14:15 - 14:17this will begin a new generation
-
14:17 - 14:20of Lisa Frank fans, when kids see us using
-
14:20 - 14:21our stuff!"
-
14:21 - 14:23Little did Marsha and the rest of us know,
-
14:23 - 14:24we'd never use the stuff.
-
14:24 - 14:26We're not getting the stuff.
-
14:26 - 14:27In March of 2017,
-
14:27 - 14:29the Kickstarter is still going on, and
-
14:29 - 14:31one of the founders and CEOs
-
14:31 - 14:33of Glamour Dolls came on to clarify a
-
14:33 - 14:35couple things. You're gonna see his name
-
14:35 - 14:37coming up a lot. His name is Peter,
-
14:37 - 14:39he looks like that. Just so you can get
-
14:39 - 14:41a visual of who we're talking to.
-
14:41 - 14:44Peter, CEO, founder, Glamour Dolls,
-
14:44 - 14:45along with a chick named Jessica.
-
14:45 - 14:46That's Jessica.
-
14:46 - 14:48Back in 2017, unless you
-
14:48 - 14:50were in the makeup industry, there wasn't
-
14:50 - 14:52as much information readily available
-
14:52 - 14:54about how makeup manufacturing worked,
-
14:54 - 14:56so Peter felt like it was important
-
14:56 - 14:58to explain to the backers, kinda, what
-
14:58 - 15:00we were in for with this. He explained
-
15:00 - 15:02something called minimum order quantities
-
15:02 - 15:04and he said, "As we get more pledges we
-
15:04 - 15:06have to order more units and if the order
-
15:06 - 15:09gets big enough, we are able to consider
-
15:09 - 15:10adding new products, knowing that we will
-
15:10 - 15:13be able to meet the factory minimums for
-
15:13 - 15:14packaging and filling".
-
15:14 - 15:17And then he says, "As we add new products,
-
15:17 - 15:19there will need to be some higher pledge
-
15:19 - 15:21tiers, there no way around it. I wish I
-
15:21 - 15:22could tell you exactly how much the
-
15:22 - 15:24highest tier will be or how many products
-
15:24 - 15:26we'll end up with, but we came here to
-
15:26 - 15:29figure that out with you. But, you may see
-
15:29 - 15:31the problem with this, in that they
-
15:31 - 15:34haven't even created or started to create
-
15:34 - 15:36the products they've already promised,
-
15:36 - 15:38and now we're talking about adding on
-
15:38 - 15:42another layer, more tiers, more products,
-
15:42 - 15:45that also they don't have any plan for how
-
15:45 - 15:47they're going to make them. There's no
-
15:47 - 15:49artwork from Lisa frank, there's no colors
-
15:49 - 15:51picked out, there's just a concept
-
15:51 - 15:54in their minds, that's all that exists.
-
15:54 - 15:56And as we go through this, you'll realize
-
15:56 - 15:58they didn't even calculate the financials
-
15:58 - 16:00on how much all this was going to cost,
-
16:00 - 16:02or if they did calculate the financials,
-
16:02 - 16:04they didn't care, they were like, we'll
-
16:04 - 16:06figure it out some how.
-
16:06 - 16:08And then Peter said something that stuck
-
16:08 - 16:11in the minds of Backers for the rest
-
16:11 - 16:14of the campaign. This is what he said,
-
16:14 - 16:15"Ultimately, whatever we do and don't
-
16:15 - 16:17figure out, these products will be
-
16:17 - 16:19available for individual purchase before
-
16:19 - 16:22the end of the year". The end of 2017.
-
16:22 - 16:24Kickstarter Backers will just be getting
-
16:24 - 16:27them first. They didn't.
-
16:27 - 16:29So you remember how I said they were
-
16:29 - 16:31adding all of these new products, and
-
16:31 - 16:33either they didn't calculate the
-
16:33 - 16:34financials to figure out how much they
-
16:34 - 16:38were gonna cost or they did know, but they
-
16:38 - 16:40"oh we'll get the money from somewhere"
-
16:40 - 16:42they kinda figured out how they might get
-
16:42 - 16:45the money. They tapped into a creator
-
16:45 - 16:49named Wengie, now back then, there was
-
16:49 - 16:54a big boom around creators who did DIY
-
16:54 - 16:56challenge kinds of videos. I'm gonna show
-
16:56 - 16:59you some of Wengie's thumbnails. She got
-
16:59 - 17:02tens of millions of views on these videos
-
17:02 - 17:07Wengie was huge in this space, especially
-
17:07 - 17:09with kids. At the time, Wengie only had
-
17:09 - 17:116 million official subscribers
-
17:11 - 17:13on her channel, but she had way more
-
17:13 - 17:14watching her.
-
17:14 - 17:17Wengie: Hey guys, it's Wengie Welcome back
-
17:17 - 17:19but today I'm here to make a special
-
17:19 - 17:21awesome announcement, I'm so excited
-
17:21 - 17:23to announce this, like I can't even right
-
17:23 - 17:26now. I'm going to be collaborating with
-
17:26 - 17:28Lisa Frank and Glamour Dolls on an
-
17:28 - 17:30eyeshadow palette, like What?! for those
-
17:30 - 17:32of you who haven't heard about Lisa Frank
-
17:32 - 17:37she is so amazing. She is, like,
literally my childhood. -
17:37 - 17:38And her art is all about rainbows,
-
17:38 - 17:40unicorns, colorful, like
-
17:40 - 17:41everything I'm about.
-
17:41 - 17:43Like, her art is my aesthetic, but
-
17:43 - 17:45the most amazing thing is
-
17:45 - 17:47you guys get to be involved as well
-
17:47 - 17:49because you guys are my Wingy-con fam
-
17:49 - 17:50and if I'm going to work on my first
-
17:50 - 17:53huge collaboration,
it's got to be with you guys. -
17:53 - 17:56So, I really want you guys to help
contribute to our creative. -
17:56 - 17:59Choose the colors with us,
choose the designs of the pallet. -
17:59 - 18:01And we've partnered with
Glamour Dolls Make-up -
18:01 - 18:03to make this come alive.
-
18:03 - 18:07Because they are a high quality,
vegan, cruelty-free brand. -
18:07 - 18:08Not only that,
-
18:08 - 18:09they make super affordable makeup,
-
18:09 - 18:12because I want this collaboration
to be affordable to everyone. -
18:12 - 18:14And the great thing
about this whole process -
18:14 - 18:17is this was Internationally available
no matter where you are, -
18:17 - 18:19you can pre-order this palette.
-
18:19 - 18:22I'm not a hundred percent
on this timeline, but it seems -
18:22 - 18:24like this is when they added more tiers.
-
18:24 - 18:28They added a seventy dollar tier,
a one hundred dollar tier, -
18:28 - 18:30and two hundred dollar tier,
-
18:30 - 18:33but what they added that
was the most important thing -
18:33 - 18:35that I think really turned everything,
-
18:35 - 18:39was the addition of the
Trapper Keeper palettes. -
18:39 - 18:42These were going to be six pan
eye-shadow palettes that -
18:42 - 18:45looked legit like a trapper keeper.
-
18:45 - 18:48No one had ever seen anything
like this before and the -
18:48 - 18:52nostalgia overload. Oh my gosh.
People lost their minds when -
18:52 - 18:54they were thinking,
"Oh my gosh, a trapper keeper -
18:54 - 18:57eye-shadow palette, I need to have this
in my life!" -
18:57 - 18:59So, along with Wengie
trapper keeper palette -
18:59 - 19:03there would be a naturally glam
palette and a bold a bright palette. -
19:03 - 19:06All adorned with Lisa Frank artwork.
-
19:06 - 19:09Just an hour before the kickstarted ended,
-
19:09 - 19:11Glamour Dolls made another promise.
-
19:11 - 19:15They said that everybody, thanks
to their participation, -
19:15 - 19:19anybody that participated in the
Kickstarter was going to get a goody bag. -
19:19 - 19:23What was in the goody bag?
No idea - no one ever got it. -
19:23 - 19:26But they promised, they said
"There's gonna be a goody bag added, -
19:26 - 19:28thank you so much for backing
this project.": -
19:28 - 19:31According to the community,
at the time, it looked like before -
19:31 - 19:33Wengie launched her video,
they were at about -
19:33 - 19:35two hundred fifty thousand dollars
in pledges. -
19:35 - 19:38After Wendgie launched her video,
they hit their peak -
19:38 - 19:41at three hundred seventy thousand dollars
-
19:41 - 19:44raised and almost six thousand people.
-
19:44 - 19:48That was an average of about sixty two
dollars spent per backer. -
19:48 - 19:52The one hundred dollar tier got everything
from the collection. -
19:52 - 19:57And the two hundred dollar tier got two
sets of everything in the collection. -
19:57 - 20:01Now me not having a ton of money,
at the time, and being a procrastinator -
20:01 - 20:03I waited until the last minute to
back this campaign. -
20:03 - 20:08So I joined in at the very last moment
in the very last day of the campaign -
20:08 - 20:13at the seventy dollar level, so I paid
seventy dollars plus five dollar shipping. -
20:13 - 20:17And I will tell you, I was most excited
about those dang trapper keeper palettes. -
20:17 - 20:18So excited about those things!
-
20:18 - 20:22And I was excited, after I saw the drawing
I was excited about the nail polishes. -
20:22 - 20:25They looked really cool. I'd never seen
anything quite like that. -
20:25 - 20:27And I wanted to review it for the channel,
-
20:27 - 20:29I was excited to talk to you all about it.
-
20:29 - 20:32Was it good quality along with
being really cute? -
20:32 - 20:33I wanted to let you know.
-
20:33 - 20:40[music]
-
20:40 - 20:42Then something really weird happened.
-
20:42 - 20:46Because, at the time, I was really in to
subscription boxes, I got a ton of them. -
20:46 - 20:49I got my Ipsy bag, and I got this in it.
-
20:49 - 20:51Yes, I still have it.
-
20:51 - 20:54This is the Lisa Frank blush brush.
-
20:57 - 20:58What?
-
20:58 - 21:00Why-why am I getting this in an Ipsy bag?
-
21:00 - 21:02Let me go ahead and show you,
-
21:02 - 21:04it is super super freaking cute.
-
21:04 - 21:07there is a little line here,
where the image connects, -
21:07 - 21:09but overall it's just a very cute design.
-
21:09 - 21:12I will show you though that the, ya know,
it is a little wiggly, -
21:12 - 21:15it's not great quality, but
at the time, -
21:15 - 21:19I was more just confused.
We are all super confused -
21:19 - 21:23on what is happening and why
the Lisa Frank blush brushes are in Ipsy. -
21:23 - 21:24You guys! I'm so excited!
-
21:24 - 21:28I saw that this might be a possibility,
something you could get in your bag, -
21:28 - 21:30and I got it! I'm so excited!
-
21:30 - 21:33The fourth grader in my is, like,
jumping up and down, she has -
21:33 - 21:36her Lisa Frank trapper keeper like
in the air. -
21:36 - 21:39This is a Lisa Frank inspired brush!
-
21:39 - 21:43Look at this thing!
Look [laughs] at this thing! -
21:43 - 21:47There's magical, like, unicorns
on the handle. -
21:47 - 21:51And it is pink, and vibrant,
and blue, and green, -
21:51 - 21:53and all sorts of magical colors.
-
21:53 - 21:57If I would've had this in fourth grade
I would've been the coolest kid around -
21:57 - 22:01I would've been like, "yes, I'm putting
on my fake blush with my [laughs] -
22:01 - 22:04Lisa Frank blush brush.
Thank you very much." -
22:04 - 22:08Guys, I'm completely serious, I had
the trapper keeper, I had the folders, -
22:08 - 22:12I had the pencils, I had the little, like
pencil holder. I had everything - -
22:12 - 22:15everything Lisa Frank.
-
22:15 - 22:18When I was in fourth grade, that was like,
the only way to be cool was to have -
22:18 - 22:21multicolored rainbow cheetahs
on your trapper keeper. -
22:21 - 22:25And now I am twenty four year old woman
with a rainbow unicorn brush and I love it -
22:25 - 22:28But it does make sense,
it will make sense -
22:28 - 22:29I'm gonna get there.
-
22:29 - 22:33About a month after the kickstarter ended,
there was a red flag. -
22:33 - 22:36Besides the red flag of the
blush brush being in Ipsy bags and -
22:36 - 22:39them not telling us that this could happen,
-
22:39 - 22:44this was another major red flag that we
probably should've seen. -
22:44 - 22:47What they posted to the kickstarter
was basically about lessons that they -
22:47 - 22:48had learned so far.
-
22:48 - 22:49This is what they said:
-
22:49 - 22:53"Lisa knows how much we've got in the
works, but her advice was to -
22:53 - 22:56stop and focus on a few things with
high production quality rather than -
22:56 - 22:59trying to do everything at once.
-
22:59 - 23:02Our friends at Kickstarter gave us
some very similar advice- -
23:02 - 23:05this is a marathon, not a sprint.
-
23:05 - 23:08We've taken it to heart, and stopped, gone
back to the lab and made sure that the -
23:08 - 23:13next few weeks are going to run smoothly
and be everything that we promised. " -
23:13 - 23:17So everybody, Lisa Frank, Kickstarter,
everybody's telling Glamour Dolls -
23:17 - 23:19you're doing too much. Stop.
-
23:19 - 23:24You have made too many promises
and you are going to just lose everything -
23:24 - 23:27slow down, figure out how you're going to
-
23:27 - 23:31just get a couple of high quality products
out and then worry about the rest, -
23:31 - 23:37but the thing is; is on the Kickstarter
page, it had said 'estimated deliver of -
23:37 - 23:39September of 2017,
-
23:39 - 23:43So we are now the beginning of May.
June, July, August, Semptember, -
23:43 - 23:47that's four months until the estimated
deliver date of the products. -
23:47 - 23:51Now, I didn't know at the time a lot
about production, I had no idea, -
23:51 - 23:53so I didn't know that was
freaking impossible. -
23:53 - 23:54[scoff]
-
23:54 - 23:57I don't think a lot of us knew that
that was freaking impossible, -
23:57 - 23:59but it was freaking impossible.
-
23:59 - 24:01But Glamour Dolls didn't tell us
it was freaking impossible, -
24:01 - 24:03oh no, they made us think it was
we were getting our stuff in September -
24:03 - 24:06because, remember, at this point,
they've got thirteen products -
24:06 - 24:07that they've promised us,
-
24:07 - 24:11including counting each nail polish
as one product. -
24:11 - 24:14And then, on top of that,
they had promised us -
24:14 - 24:18that they would add in a Lisa Frank
designed nail file, so that made it -
24:18 - 24:22fourteen products that they needed
to give us, in four months. -
24:22 - 24:23[eh-eh]
-
24:23 - 24:25Because we didn't realize as Backers,
-
24:25 - 24:27that Lisa was designing all of this stuff
from scratch. -
24:27 - 24:32Why in the world, she was not using
existing artwork, I have no freaking clue. -
24:32 - 24:34I still don't know why she didn't
use existing artwork. -
24:34 - 24:36And in hindsight, this is why hindsight
is twenty - twenty. -
24:36 - 24:39Glamour Dolls had to have know there was
no way in hell -
24:39 - 24:42we were getting this stuff by September
but they didn't tell us that. -
24:42 - 24:47They even went so far as people saying
it was their birthday in September -
24:47 - 24:51and they were so excited to get
Glamour Doll's products for their birthday -
24:51 - 24:54and Glamour Doll's like "yaaayy,
we're so excited for you to get them too!" -
24:54 - 24:57They knew darn well those people were
not getting those products -
24:57 - 24:58for their birthday.
-
24:58 - 25:01In May of 2017, the surveys continued
-
25:01 - 25:07They started really asking us our opinions
on how we wanted things to be done. -
25:07 - 25:10And we started seeing actual product
coming together -
25:10 - 25:14and they sent a picture of this unicorn
lippy- it was a lip balm -
25:14 - 25:17and it was a unicorn, and it was so
freaking cute in this little -
25:17 - 25:21empty white box. Of course it was a white
box, because Lisa hadn't designed the -
25:21 - 25:23artwork yet, but they were like,
-
25:23 - 25:24"yes look at this draft of this unicorn,
it's so cute!" -
25:24 - 25:29And then they sent over the picture
of the vegan leather make-up bag -
25:29 - 25:34also so cute! Really cute little zipper,
that was like a rainbow, and it was white, -
25:34 - 25:38of course, because again, Lisa hadn't
designed the artwork yet. -
25:38 - 25:42We also got a final look at the upcoming
crease brush, now keep in mind, -
25:42 - 25:45that the blush brush that was already
sent out to Ipsy people, and this -
25:45 - 25:49crease brush, were only going to be
shipped to the highest tier Backers. -
25:49 - 25:54The 100 dollar level, and the 200 dollar
level. This is going to be important -
25:54 - 25:56in just a moment.
-
25:56 - 26:00In June, we get another in hindsight
red-flag, because Glamour Dolls -
26:00 - 26:07opened up another way to buy items from
the collection from a site called 'backer kit' -
26:07 - 26:11and on Backer Kit, you could order product
individually to be added to your box -
26:11 - 26:13when all of your stuff shipped.
-
26:13 - 26:15It was also a way for people who hadn't
been part of the kickstarter -
26:15 - 26:18to get on the action and
order the products. -
26:18 - 26:23If you did happen to order the angled
blush brush from Backer Kit -
26:23 - 26:25those blush brushes did go out
-
26:25 - 26:29but the 100 dollar and 200 dollar people,
still didn't have a blush brush. -
26:29 - 26:32Unless they got it in their Ipsy bag,
then they had a blush brush. -
26:32 - 26:34And if they were 200 dollar tear,
-
26:34 - 26:36they were gonna end up with 3
blush brushes by the end of it, -
26:36 - 26:38if they also got it in Ipsy.
-
26:38 - 26:42And in June, Backers got a sneak peak
of a single eye shadow -
26:42 - 26:46and a bronzer - we are almost there
-
26:46 - 26:50of the big debacle with the bronzer
and the eye shadow. -
26:50 - 26:51That's a whole 'nother thing -
we're almost there. -
26:51 - 26:55Throughout June we also got sneaks of the
Trapper Keeper palate - -
26:55 - 26:59who are so excited! The draft of the
actual product packaging. -
26:59 - 27:03We also got sneaks of the
matte mousse swatches, -
27:03 - 27:07we also got information about what the
nail polish colors were gonna look like, -
27:07 - 27:10I mean they are giving us pieces and
pieces, and pieces, -
27:10 - 27:13of 'this is coming, this is coming,
this is what we're working on.' -
27:13 - 27:15They really did show us a lot!
-
27:15 - 27:20But one thing you'll notice,
if you listen carefully to this video -
27:20 - 27:21of this nail polish swatches,
-
27:21 - 27:24is somebody in the background
says something about Hot Topic. -
27:24 - 27:32[inaudible]
-
27:32 - 27:34That's gonna be another piece.
-
27:34 - 27:35[laughs]
-
27:35 - 27:36Hang tight.
-
27:36 - 27:40They also said that everything was
still on track for shipping in September -
27:40 - 27:41in three months!
-
27:41 - 27:43How are they telling us this?
-
27:43 - 27:47They lied to us! They outright lied to us!
They had to have known, darn well, -
27:47 - 27:49we weren't getting shit in September.
-
27:49 - 27:52Because at this point nobody had even
gotten on this digital background yet, -
27:52 - 27:54that should've been the easiest
thing to do. -
27:54 - 27:58You have a piece of art, you send it out as
a background,-you just digitally send it -
27:58 - 27:59you don't even have to mail anything!
-
27:59 - 28:01you don't even have to create a
physical product! -
28:01 - 28:05It's literally just a piece of
art e-mailed, that's it! -
28:05 - 28:05They didn't even make that yet.
-
28:05 - 28:07Here comes another red flag.
Are you ready? -
28:07 - 28:13In July, they started selling that crease
brush that was supposed to go to the -
28:13 - 28:16top tier Backers, they started
selling it on their website for 4.99 -
28:16 - 28:19and according to Popsugar, it
sold out immediately -
28:19 - 28:22at the beginning of July, and
then restocked in the middle of July -
28:22 - 28:24So this is what I think happened,
-
28:24 - 28:27because, of course, you can't sell out
and then restock two weeks later -
28:27 - 28:31from a true sell out. You have to
order more! They didn't sell out! -
28:31 - 28:34What they did, I think, is they
had a number of extra brushes -
28:34 - 28:40beyond what people had, what they
had, you know, allocated to send out. -
28:40 - 28:44So they sold those brushes, and then
they realized they were selling out so fast -
28:44 - 28:45they sold the backer's brushes.
-
28:45 - 28:47I guess, figuring they
would just make more. -
28:47 - 28:50And they would just send more out later,
I don't know. -
28:50 - 28:54So while all of this has happened,
Glamour Dolls is continually and -
28:54 - 28:57constantly involving the Backers in
the development process -
28:57 - 29:00of everything. We're watching everything
go down, and I will honestly tell you... -
29:00 - 29:03I kinda tuned out, I was like, "I don't
even freakin' care" like, -
29:03 - 29:07I don't care what thin- I just want the
products! Like, I participated -
29:07 - 29:11in a couple of surveys, but after that,
I just stopped reading e-mails. -
29:11 - 29:16I was like, I don't care! I don't care
about all of this, it's too much! -
29:16 - 29:18It's just- send me the products!
-
29:18 - 29:21I don't care what ya'll decide. It's j-
it's fine - it's whatever. -
29:21 - 29:23So I kinda tuned out at this point.
-
29:23 - 29:28But a lot of people were very invested
in all of these choices. -
29:28 - 29:30The Backers even started arguing
amongst each other, -
29:30 - 29:33where some people were being a little
harsh about the designs, -
29:33 - 29:35like with the trapper keeper palate,
saying that the mirror was too small -
29:35 - 29:38and can you make the mirror bigger,
people were complaining that there -
29:38 - 29:41were too many unicorns. Like, and then
some people, just being like, -
29:41 - 29:42jus-just-what did you expect,
it's Lisa Frank. -
29:42 - 29:45Just let them do the thing.
It's fine. It's fine. -
29:45 - 29:48People were just getting frustrated
and just started arguing back and forth -
29:48 - 29:49a little bit.
-
29:49 - 29:51Jessica, the co-founder with Peter
even came in and was like, -
29:51 - 29:55"hey ya'll, you need to speak nicely to
each other, like, we're a community -
29:55 - 29:57we're working on this together, cause it's
starting to get a little heated." -
29:57 - 30:01Now we're in August of 2017, one month
before we're supposed to be getting -
30:01 - 30:03our products shipped.
-
30:03 - 30:06We get another shot of the bronzer,
this time with swatches. -
30:06 - 30:10this is what they said, "We specifically
developed this formula so it's universally -
30:10 - 30:13flattering, making it the perfect shade
for all of our dolls." -
30:13 - 30:17Unless the dolls are deeper than that
color, I-I don't know. -
30:17 - 30:20The thing is, you really can't make a
universal shade of bronzer -
30:20 - 30:24because what works for someone
very deep skinned, is not gonna work -
30:24 - 30:24for someone with very pale skin.
-
30:24 - 30:26You just can't do that.
-
30:26 - 30:27All you can do is shoot for the middle.
-
30:27 - 30:32So just saying that they made it for
all of their dolls, just really was kind of -
30:32 - 30:33insulting to some of the Backers.
-
30:33 - 30:37The most interested update,
I'm gonna go ahead, put it on the screen -
30:37 - 30:40for you, but I'll read the most
interesting part, they said, -
30:40 - 30:42"we know we've been little quiet
over the last few weeks, -
30:42 - 30:45but trust us, we have so many fun
and exciting updates to share -
30:45 - 30:47with you guys. The Trapper Keeper
palate artwork should be finalized -
30:47 - 30:52any day now. " Any day now. "And we
literally cannot wait to show you -
30:52 - 30:56what it looks like! This collaboration
has been long time in the works, -
30:56 - 30:59and we know that in the end,
it'll be worth all the blood, sweat -
30:59 - 31:02and glitter tears that we put into it."
-
31:02 - 31:04There's no mention of any shipping delays,
-
31:04 - 31:08There's just - we're getting our products.
All of them - in September apparently. -
31:08 - 31:12[laughs] And the reason why we know this
is because they keep showing us things, -
31:12 - 31:15they keep showing us that things
are almost done! -
31:15 - 31:18We got a sneak peak of the shades that
were gonna be in the bold and bright palat -
31:18 - 31:22we also got an explanation about the
digital artwork that was supposed -
31:22 - 31:25to be going out, and what they basically
said was that they wanted to start -
31:25 - 31:27with the hardest products first,
like the trapper keeper palates, -
31:27 - 31:30and then work they way to the easiest stuff
which would be the digital background. -
31:30 - 31:34In mid-August they put out a statement
that the Wengie palate was almost finished -
31:34 - 31:38and that they would update when they
had an exact delivery schedule. -
31:38 - 31:41So it's getting towards the end of August
-
31:41 - 31:43and the people with the September
birthdays are starting to realize -
31:43 - 31:46I'm not getting this for my birthday,
am I? -
31:46 - 31:49So there was a backer that said
"It's obvious that all the -
31:49 - 31:53September birthday Backers are
not receiving their make-up next month -
31:53 - 31:55it's almost September, and not many
products and designs are finalized -
31:55 - 31:59as much of a bummer this may be,
getting Lisa Frank make-up -
31:59 - 32:03for Christmas, will still be really cool.
I hope it's ready by then." -
32:03 - 32:06It's not gonna be ready.
-
32:06 - 32:13[music]
-
32:13 - 32:16So September finally arrives
and everybody is like okay -
32:16 - 32:19we're gonna get our announcement
that everything is gonna be shipped -
32:19 - 32:21but we did not get that!
-
32:21 - 32:25What we got was a sneak of the shade
of the lip mousse, -
32:25 - 32:28and no mention of the fact that things
are supposed to be shipping right now -
32:28 - 32:30like, they just didn't even say anything.
-
32:30 - 32:32Comment after comment, people are like
"what the hell? You're showing -
32:32 - 32:36me a shade of the lip mousse, how
are you still making this?! -
32:36 - 32:38We're supposed to be getting them shipped
this month!?" -
32:38 - 32:43So, after that post, everybody was pissed.
Everybody was sounding off in the comments -
32:43 - 32:48how mad they were, so the CEO had
to re-group and he ended up putting out -
32:48 - 32:52a very lengthy statement.
I will put it all on the screen for you. -
32:52 - 32:54He sincerely apologizes for
gaps in communication -
32:54 - 32:58and disappointment, and he says that
if for any reason Backers are not happy -
32:58 - 33:02that they can send an email and they
will issue a refund immediately. -
33:02 - 33:07followed with quote, "we need to stress
to all of you that you will be receiving -
33:07 - 33:11the products that you paid for
no matter what." -
33:11 - 33:14And I really genuinely don't think that
people asked for refunds because of this -
33:15 - 33:18because they saw things that they really
wanted and they knew if they asked -
33:19 - 33:21for a refund, they weren't going
to get any of it. -
33:21 - 33:24And they still had faith that at some
point, this was going to happen. -
33:25 - 33:26Maybe it wasn't going to happen right now,
-
33:27 - 33:29but, if I take my money out I'm not
getting all this stuff. -
33:29 - 33:32And if I do want it, I'm gonna have to
wait for it to go to retailers -
33:32 - 33:34and I'm gonna have to pay retail
price for it- i'm gon-I -
33:35 - 33:37I'm gonna have to pay a lot more money
-
33:37 - 33:41for it, when if I had just been patient,
I would've gotten everything that I wanted. -
33:41 - 33:45The post continued with statements
about threats that they were getting -
33:45 - 33:50across social media- and they said
that the threats are unnecessary -
33:50 - 33:52and if they want a refund,
just let them know. -
33:53 - 33:55And they also said, about the shipping
delay, they said it was just an estimated -
33:55 - 33:58shipping delivery for September.
-
33:58 - 34:01Quote, "We started all these products
from scratch with you at the concept phase -
34:01 - 34:04and this is our first time working with
a license so there are new steps -
34:05 - 34:07and things to learn. Hiccups have ranged
from trying to find the right -
34:08 - 34:10fulfillment agents, to some of the
packaging samples we received -
34:10 - 34:12not being up to our standards.
-
34:12 - 34:15We were clear from the beginning
and in previous updates -
34:15 - 34:18that things might get delayed
as the process played out. -
34:18 - 34:21We realize that September will be over
within a few short weeks, which means -
34:21 - 34:26we will unfortunately not be -be on target
with our hopeful September estimation." -
34:26 - 34:30This is a bold face lie!
It is a straight up lie! -
34:30 - 34:34They never once in any of the updates
told any body that there could possibly -
34:34 - 34:35be a delay.
-
34:35 - 34:40In fact, they reassured customers
that everything was on track for September -
34:41 - 34:42They lied!
-
34:42 - 34:45Regarding communication, they said
it hasn't been the best, but they're -
34:45 - 34:47going to do better in the future.
-
34:47 - 34:50And about people getting the brushes
from Ipsy, 'member, I said 'hold on'? -
34:50 - 34:53we're gonna get to it -
I'm getting to it right now. -
34:53 - 34:57They said, "The only products from this
collection that are on the market -
34:57 - 35:01are the Lisa Frank blush brush
and the Lisa Frank blending brush. -
35:01 - 35:07Those were developed six months before
the kickstarted, along with the eye shadow -
35:07 - 35:10and the travel bronzer for a specific
customer." -
35:10 - 35:12That specific customer was Ipsy,
-
35:12 - 35:16"And were offered during this campaign as
an addition perk, or add on, -
35:16 - 35:18so that you can truly have everything
in the collection. -
35:18 - 35:22Beyond that, we can assure you that
anything being developed -
35:22 - 35:25through kickstarter will be in your
hands first." -
35:25 - 35:26What they don't mention in this,
-
35:27 - 35:31was the update where they said
that 3500 Backers, the first 3500 -
35:31 - 35:34were also going to get the crease
slash blending brush. -
35:34 - 35:36They've conveniently forgotten about that.
-
35:37 - 35:38That actually never gets mentioned again.
-
35:38 - 35:42When Backers pointed out that Glam Dolls
raised ten times more than their -
35:42 - 35:43original goal of 30 thousand dollars,
-
35:43 - 35:48they said that it didn't make things
easier, it actually made things more -
35:48 - 35:51complicated, because that's when
they started adding extra products. -
35:51 - 35:53Well who's dang fault was that!?
-
35:53 - 35:56This is also the first mention of
hand painted items. -
35:56 - 35:59Why are there hand painted items
in this collection? -
35:59 - 36:03I have no idea. I don't know why
they thought this was a good idea. -
36:03 - 36:05We'll talk about that.
-
36:05 - 36:07They also mention, that of course,
because the Backers went in -
36:07 - 36:10and helped them fund the products
that they will get everything -
36:10 - 36:13at a cheaper price than what they
would be sold at retail. -
36:13 - 36:16Then they breakdown everything
that they say is happening right now -
36:17 - 36:19including, they say, specifically
-
36:19 - 36:21that all the products have been finalized
-
36:21 - 36:24and physical production samples
have been approved, -
36:25 - 36:27but they do say that they're
keeping 3 products blank -
36:27 - 36:30so that community can vote on
what kind of artwork is going to -
36:30 - 36:32go on to those 3 products.
-
36:32 - 36:36They also promise that on October
1st, they're going to ship out -
36:36 - 36:40those 4 products that were
made before the kickstarter started; -
36:40 - 36:43the 2 brushes, the eyeshadow,
and the bronzer. -
36:43 - 36:46They'll go out to the 100 and 200
dollar Backers. -
36:46 - 36:48As well as anybody that added them on.
-
36:48 - 36:51They also say this: "In addition to the
press, we were reached out to by -
36:52 - 36:56a few major retailors, all of whom
require time and energy to onboard -
36:56 - 36:59with. There have been many sleepless
nights and it has been a journey -
36:59 - 37:05as we try to build our team, and turn
this opportunity in to a solid foundation" -
37:05 - 37:07I don't think we knew what this meant
at the time, -
37:07 - 37:10but this meant that they had two
retailors they were talking to -
37:10 - 37:12to sell these products.
Hot Topic and Dolls Kill. -
37:14 - 37:16The letter then goes on to pull
at the heartstrings -
37:17 - 37:20of the Backers, to get everybody
to calm down, and be patient, -
37:20 - 37:21and be nice to them.
-
37:22 - 37:24They -s- give shoutouts to the staff
members and the interns -
37:24 - 37:27and statements like, "Jessica and I
are both people too" -
37:27 - 37:30And they mention Jessica neglecting
her own wedding because she's -
37:31 - 37:33working so hard on this project.
] -
37:33 - 37:37They also talk about Peter missing friends
and family members' major life events -
37:37 - 37:40due to trying to make this product happen.
-
37:40 - 37:43What we like to think that if you were
able to see our day to day, -
37:43 - 37:47those of you who feel the need to
be critical, would be a little less so. -
37:48 - 37:51And this is when there's a complete
tone-shift in the comment section -
37:51 - 37:52underneath the project.
-
37:53 - 37:58The comments are so kind, and so
patient, there's even people saying -
37:58 - 38:01that they expected the products to ship
after September, -
38:01 - 38:03because a lot of kickstarters ship late
-
38:04 - 38:06which I found isn't necessarily true,
-
38:07 - 38:08but people were really nice to Peter
-
38:09 - 38:12after his post. Just like, yeah you are
human, let's give you some time -
38:12 - 38:15I can see that you're trying,
like, you're doing your best -
38:15 - 38:17and things are coming.
It'll be soon. -
38:17 - 38:20Everybody is just being super super
nice to them. -
38:20 - 38:24But one backer, Ariel, she really
summed things up, but in a very -
38:25 - 38:26very polite way.
She asked questions like, -
38:27 - 38:31i-she wanted to know the dates of the
extra promises, like the Glamour Doll's -
38:31 - 38:36Gypsy eyeliner pencil, the vintage Lisa
Frank item that they were promised. -
38:36 - 38:40The nail file, and the digital background,
and of course, her questions went -
38:40 - 38:41completely unanswered.
-
38:41 - 38:46On September 21st, they said,
Thank you so much, -
38:46 - 38:50the eyeshadow and the bronzer production
have been completed. We have them. -
38:52 - 38:55They say, as a huge thank you for
supporting us throughout this journey, -
38:55 - 39:00we've decided to ship out the orders early
for those of you who backed a tier -
39:00 - 39:05that includes them, or added them to their
pledge afterward in backerkit. -
39:05 - 39:07But you and I both know, that this is
not on time. -
39:07 - 39:12October 1st is technically late, because
the estimated ship time was September -
39:12 - 39:14and there shipping them in October,
-
39:15 - 39:17but they're using this language on purpose
to manipulate the Backers -
39:17 - 39:18and make them feel good that they're
getting things early. -
39:19 - 39:22Because what I think they meant, is that
they had intended to send out the packages -
39:22 - 39:27when they were all completed, but they're
sending these particular items because -
39:27 - 39:30they're ready out before the rest of the
products are ready. -
39:30 - 39:33Glamour Dolls makes it sound like this is
- like- a big reward, -
39:33 - 39:36this is something we're doing for you
because we care about you - -
39:36 - 39:37No, this is something that you
owe to people. -
39:38 - 39:40This is not - this is not a -
a luxury. -
39:40 - 39:42This is not a super kind thing to do.
-
39:42 - 39:43This is just what you should be doing.
-
39:44 - 39:46Then things switched with the
digital background. -
39:46 - 39:49Basically what they were saying,
was that they wanted to give an update -
39:50 - 39:53on the digital background and they
said that Lisa had some concerns -
39:54 - 39:55about her artwork getting stolen.
-
39:55 - 39:57I don't know, I think if anyone wanted
to steal Lisa Frank's artwork -
39:57 - 40:00it'd be pretty easy to do,
but I digress. -
40:00 - 40:02So anyway, they were worried about
this digital background -
40:02 - 40:05being stolen and then put on
things illegally, -
40:06 - 40:08so they didn't want to do a digital
background, instead -
40:08 - 40:13Lisa was going to go in to her vault
and she found these vintage postcards. -
40:13 - 40:18And these vintage postcards were going
to be shipped out instead of the digital -
40:18 - 40:21background to anybody that pledged
5 dollars or more. -
40:22 - 40:25So every single person that pledged
was going to get one of these. -
40:25 - 40:34And 25 people would have one that was
handsigned personal signed by Lisa herself -
40:34 - 40:36This postcard was supposed to go out
once all of the orders, all the products, -
40:36 - 40:38had been made and the final orders
were being shipped. -
40:38 - 40:41Then they dropped drawing designs
of the caps of the nail polishes -
40:41 - 40:44and I was thinking as I was looking at
this, I was like didn't they just say -
40:44 - 40:48like a week ago, that everything
was already designed, that they -
40:48 - 40:49already had all the mockups?
-
40:49 - 40:50Apparently that was a lie.
-
40:50 - 40:51And would you be shocked to learn
-
40:51 - 40:55that the shipping of the bronzers
doesn't happen on October 1st? -
40:55 - 40:57'Cause it doesn't happen.
-
40:57 - 41:03In October, the community is sent a poll
for the design for the vegan make-up bag -
41:03 - 41:06they had a choice of zoomer and zorbit,
who are aliens, -
41:06 - 41:07dancing dolphins, or Sky the Pegasus.
-
41:08 - 41:13We also saw the first physical samples
of the Naturally Glam -
41:13 - 41:15and the bold and bright palates,
so freaking cute. -
41:16 - 41:18The community loses their minds over
these palettes, comments are lighting up -
41:20 - 41:23about people so excited to get these
palettes in their hands. -
41:23 - 41:27And like I said, the eyeshadow and
bronzers, that stuff did not -
41:27 - 41:30end up shipping on October 1st,
because Glamour Dolls says that -
41:30 - 41:33they were stuck in customs..
for two weeks. -
41:33 - 41:38They said in an update, being as today is
10 26, we expect the product to arrive -
41:38 - 41:43to the shipping facility and ship to you
on October 31st. -
41:43 - 41:47And therefor, you should expect the makeup
there on your doorstep during the first -
41:47 - 41:48week of November.
-
41:48 - 41:50Are you surprised that this did
actually happen? -
41:50 - 41:51Me too.
-
41:51 - 41:52[laughs]
-
41:53 - 41:54In November we get more information
-
41:54 - 41:58about the two brushes, the eyeshadow,
and the bronzer. -
41:58 - 42:02They talk about how the products
had already been in production -
42:03 - 42:05when the kickstarter started,
but where Peter shot himself in the foot -
42:05 - 42:09was because in May he said that the
Backers would be getting the products -
42:09 - 42:14first. And he should've known not to say
that because he knew that they were -
42:14 - 42:15gonna end up in Ipsy bags before the
-
42:15 - 42:17Backers got them, but he didn't tell
anybody that. -
42:18 - 42:21He just lied to everybody instead and then
when we found out they were in Ipsy bags -
42:21 - 42:22we naturally freaked out.
-
42:23 - 42:28Because not only were the blush brushes
in the April Ipsy bags, but the bronzers -
42:28 - 42:30were in the November Ipsy bags!
-
42:31 - 42:35"Oh my gosh, is this a Lisa Frank?
[gasp] Glamour Dolls bitten and bronze -
42:36 - 42:40matte bronzer!? Awhile ago we got a Lisa
Frank brush in our Ipsy bag, -
42:41 - 42:45I wonder if this is from the same line.
I'm not really expecting much from this -
42:45 - 42:48bronzer, because I feel like it's just
more on the gimmicky side, -
42:48 - 42:51But I hope that it works amazingly well.
-
42:51 - 42:53Color is really promising!
-
42:53 - 42:56It's not too warm and it's not
too cool. -
42:56 - 42:57I'm gonna swatch it out.
-
42:57 - 42:58This feels a little bit powdery.
-
42:59 - 43:02Ooh, it actually feels really nice and
smooth on the skin. -
43:02 - 43:06Granted, I did just put that hand cream on
so I don't really know what that says -
43:06 - 43:11but it feels really buttery-ish
on the skin. Feels nice! -
43:11 - 43:13The color is pretty good too.
-
43:13 - 43:16If you're fair though, I don't think
this is going to work for you -
43:16 - 43:20because it's showing up on my really
tan hand, so if you're fair, -
43:20 - 43:23I don't think this bronzer is for you.
-
43:23 - 43:24But it's really F'in cute.
-
43:24 - 43:26I wish the actual packaging
looked as cute as the box, -
43:27 - 43:29but I mean, it's still pretty cute"
-
43:29 - 43:32As a backer, what we were thinking
was that Glamour Dolls took our money -
43:32 - 43:37from the Kickstarter and made these
bronzers and made the brushes and made the -
43:37 - 43:42eyeshadows with our money and then sold
them to Ipsy. Which is actually not what -
43:42 - 43:47happened. I put all of the timelines
together and it turns out they did not use -
43:47 - 43:49Kickstarter money in order to fund
these products. -
43:50 - 43:53They had used a different website.
It was called: "Kickfurther". -
43:54 - 43:57Kickfurther - it still exists.
It's kind of like Kickstarter, but instead -
43:57 - 44:02of backing a project and getting product,
you back a project and you get interest -
44:02 - 44:07on your investment.
It's basically a way that small businesses -
44:07 - 44:10can fund the production of something
and then pay the investors back. -
44:10 - 44:12So I went over to the Glamour Dolls'
Kickfurther page and what I found out was -
44:13 - 44:17that they had done a Kickfurther campaign
to produce the blush brushes. -
44:18 - 44:25They raised $166,000 and they paid
those Backers back about two weeks after -
44:25 - 44:30the Kickstarter ended in April of 2017.
They ran a second Kickfurther campaign -
44:30 - 44:35that was running about the same time as
the Kickstarter campaign was running. -
44:36 - 44:40It was from Feb 13th of 2017 to
March 6th of 2017. This was to fund the -
44:40 - 44:43production of the eyeshadow
and the bronzer. Because with the money -
44:44 - 44:48they got from the blush brush they were
also able to make the crease brush. -
44:48 - 44:51There's a lot of business-y language
over there and I'll be honest, -
44:51 - 44:53I don't understand a lot of what
they're talking about. -
44:53 - 44:59But I will tell you what I did understand.
So, he's basically saying people are -
44:59 - 45:02concerned that they're not going to get
their money back. And he's reassuring them -
45:03 - 45:07and basically saying they've got these
two purchase orders - they're very very -
45:07 - 45:10blurry, there's stuff that's knocked out
of it, but we know now in hindsight that -
45:10 - 45:14the brand that ordered the highlight
and the bronzer was Ipsy. -
45:14 - 45:20You can kind of make out in the very
blurry paperwork that Ipsy paid $378,750 -
45:20 - 45:28for the bronzer. Same for the eyeshadows.
And that was for 757,500 units of each -
45:28 - 45:32product. But! They were not
going to pay that money -
45:32 - 45:36until the product was delivered.
That's why they needed the Kickfurther -
45:36 - 45:42people- was to actually make the products.
Once they actually delivered them, then -
45:42 - 45:45they would get the money from Ipsy and
they could pay the Kickfurther Backers -
45:46 - 45:47back.
So here's the math broken down: -
45:47 - 45:53Glamour Dolls raises $313,000 from the
Kickfurther. They spend that money to -
45:54 - 46:01make the bronzer and the eyeshadow.
Ipsy pays them two payments of $378,750. -
46:01 - 46:07Which is $757,500 total
for those two products. -
46:07 - 46:10Then they have to pay interest to the
Kickfurther Backers. -
46:10 - 46:22They pay out $354,000 about to those
Backers. That's $41,000 in profit for the -
46:22 - 46:25Kickfurther people, but that gives
Glamour Dolls about $400,000 from -
46:25 - 46:30those two products from the Ipsy deal.
Plus they still have that $350,000 from -
46:30 - 46:36the Kickstarter in order to make products.
So what happened to all of that money - -
46:36 - 46:40where did they spend it?!
I have it- I know exactly where -
46:40 - 46:43they spent it!
I have to... but we have to get there. -
46:43 - 46:46So remember: the Backers over on the
Kickstarter have no idea any of this -
46:47 - 46:49Kickfurther stuff was happening.
And Glamour Dolls had no obligation -
46:49 - 46:50to share it -
it wasn't our business. -
46:51 - 46:55But this was happening behind the scenes.
In mid November, the Backers at the -
46:56 - 47:00$100 and $200 level, as well as
people who added on the bronzer or -
47:00 - 47:03the eyeshadow are starting to get their
products in the mail. Remember they -
47:03 - 47:07had ordered these back between February
and April - it's now November and they've -
47:07 - 47:10finally got some products.
And they also have their vintage -
47:10 - 47:14Lisa Frank postcard.
Glamour Dolls seemed a little bit "Oooo" -
47:14 - 47:18about that because the postcards
technically weren't supposed to go out yet. -
47:18 - 47:20The postcards were supposed to
be in the final package. -
47:20 - 47:23So what they told the Backers was:
if you got a postcard in this order, -
47:24 - 47:27you'll get a second one
in your next order. -
47:27 - 47:28That's the order where we're going to ship
you out everything. -
47:29 - 47:32And this is when Glamour Dolls is forced
to admit that they are selling the -
47:32 - 47:35Lisa Frank branded stuff - the stuff
that's supposed to be in the hands of the -
47:36 - 47:38Backers first- over at Hot Topic
and Dolls Kill. -
47:39 - 47:42Because people found the products
available over on Hot Topic! -
47:42 - 47:47But they spin it - they're SUCH
manipulative liars, I swear. This is -
47:48 - 47:49so awful.
This is what they said: -
47:49 - 47:53"The eyeshadow that leaked on Hot Topic
that some of you eagle eyes caught (we are -
47:54 - 47:58so impressed!) was supposed to be a
teaser promo for what's to come. -
47:58 - 48:03And we were 100% not aware that they would
be breaking the news so soon. -
48:03 - 48:08We're of course THRILLED to have such an
amazing partnership, but we truly had -
48:08 - 48:11had no idea they were launching this
promo so early. -
48:11 - 48:16Now that the cat's out of the bag, so to
speak, we'd love to formally introduce you -
48:16 - 48:18to the new single eyeshadow shades in
the Lisa Frank x Glamour Dolls line." -
48:19 - 48:22followed by swatches of two shadows,
not one. -
48:22 - 48:27This second single shadow was never
a part of the original list of products. -
48:27 - 48:33Why are they making more products?
It's because they could make money off -
48:33 - 48:34of Hot Topic customers.
That's why they made more. -
48:34 - 48:38Because apparently they need more money.
But then it gets so, so much worse. -
48:39 - 48:43This was when I went on my Twitter and I
was like, "This is f*cking ridiculous!" -
48:44 - 48:46If you were following me on Twitter
and you saw me freaking out on Twitter -
48:47 - 48:49about what I was finding,
this is what I had found. -
48:49 - 48:52Because the postcards. The postcards.
-
48:52 - 48:55Ok, I know it's just a postcard,
but it's wild. -
48:55 - 48:58So the postcards were coming
damaged. -
48:59 - 49:01Some of them were ripped,
some of them were creased, -
49:01 - 49:05people were saying they got a signed one
and it was ripped and they wanted -
49:05 - 49:09another one, but then they were worried
they wouldn't get another signed one and -
49:10 - 49:14how could the signed one be ripped?
It's a vintage postcard - these can't be reproduced. -
49:15 - 49:20But was it? Because people noticed that
there was a QR code on the postcard. -
49:20 - 49:24These are supposed to be vintage
and there was a QR code... -
49:24 - 49:26...on the postcard.
-
49:26 - 49:29And I sh*t you not
this is what Glamour Dolls said: -
49:30 - 49:35"QR codes actually came out in the 90's,
if ya can believe it. These postcards -
49:35 - 49:36are right from the vault."
-
49:37 - 49:42So, I had to look that up
because I was like, -
49:42 - 49:43"Are you being for serious right now?"
(laughs) -
49:43 - 49:47He's right - the QR codes did come
out in the 90's. -
49:47 - 49:51But nobody had any ability to use them
until smartphones had cameras. -
49:51 - 49:56According to the article on Microsoft,
"In 2002, Sharp introduced the first -
49:56 - 50:00cellphone with a QR scanner and competing
cell phone companies followed suit. -
50:00 - 50:04Eventually everyone who owned a smartphone
possessed a QR scanner in their pocket." -
50:05 - 50:09So at the very earliest, the postcards
were 15 years old. -
50:09 - 50:14But I will tell you there is a 0% chance-
a 0% chance- that these postcards -
50:15 - 50:19were 15 years old.
And the reason why was because the QR code -
50:19 - 50:26conveniently took you to a Lisa Frank app.
Which definitely did not exist in 2002. -
50:26 - 50:29I found the two apps that she
had available. -
50:29 - 50:32The apps at the time were the
"Lisa Frank Pick 'n Share", developed -
50:33 - 50:38in 2012 per this Buzzfeed article.
Apparently it sucked according to them. -
50:38 - 50:42The other app was called "Zoom 'n Color"
which launched in February of 2013. -
50:43 - 50:46So unless somebody calls something vintage
that is five years old, -
50:47 - 50:50these sh*t are not vintage. At all.
Not even close. -
50:50 - 50:54But it gets worse. It gets worse!
Not only weren't they vintage, -
50:54 - 50:56they weren't signed!
-
50:56 - 51:00Some people were looking at their
their signature because a lot of people -
51:01 - 51:03in the group seemed to have
gotten signatures. -
51:03 - 51:06There were 1700 people who should have
gotten these postcards because they -
51:07 - 51:08pledged that $100 tier or more.
At least 1700 people. -
51:11 - 51:14But it seemed like almost everybody,
if not everybody, commenting was -
51:14 - 51:17getting one of these 25 rare
signed postcards. -
51:18 - 51:20Something was going on.
There was a woman named, Calli, -
51:20 - 51:25who didn't get her postcard yet and
was seeing all these people commenting -
51:25 - 51:31that they'd gotten a signed one and she
was like, -
51:31 - 51:33"Oh I guess I'm not going to get a signed
one with my order." -
51:33 - 51:34And Glamour Dolls was like, "Yeah, you
do have a chance because maybe not -
51:34 - 51:36all the 25 have been sent out. We're
not sure because Lisa sent them directly -
51:36 - 51:40to the warehouse and we don't know which
ones went into the boxes." -
51:40 - 51:44And Calli says, "Yes!! Definitely
still a chance. Realistically we won't -
51:44 - 51:48know who received the 25 postcards until
they're all sent out once all the -
51:49 - 51:51products are through production and
shipped out. Talk about suspense!!" -
51:52 - 51:56But we know how many of them were signed.
They were all signed. -
51:56 - 51:58Every single one of them were signed.
-
51:58 - 52:02Because thanks to tips from people that
were commenting, they said well, there's -
52:03 - 52:07pictures of the cards on Instagram that
people are posting. The signatures are -
52:07 - 52:13absolutely 100% identical down to the
size of the commas and the sizes of the -
52:14 - 52:18loops and the extra little dot
in the smiley face. -
52:18 - 52:23These were photocopied. Every single one
had a Lisa Frank signature on it. -
52:23 - 52:28I even found an unboxing of one of these.
This was from a channel called, -
52:28 - 52:32"Beauty Pop". And here was
her reaction to getting the postcard: -
52:32 - 52:38"So first off there is this little card-
it's really, really cute. It has a -
52:38 - 52:41Lisa Frank, like, illustration on it.
I really like it. -
52:41 - 52:48And it says, "Lots of love! XO....
I don't...the team...or something maybe... -
52:48 - 52:50I don't know what that says.
That signature is kind of hard to read. -
52:50 - 53:00So it's this little postcard.
It's really really cute. I think I'm -
53:01 - 53:02going to save this because I
really like the art that's on it." -
53:02 - 53:04(Laughing) She didn't even realize that it
was Lisa Frank's signature because it -
53:05 - 53:08doesn't look like Lisa's Fran- Lisa
Frank's signature. We see the Lisa Frank -
53:09 - 53:10name on everything and it looks like a
signature. -
53:10 - 53:13That's not her real signature apparently,
(laughing) so she didn't even realize -
53:13 - 53:16that's what it was supposed to be. (Laugh)
Which I get! I totally get! -
53:16 - 53:22But it just goes to show how the signature
was of zero value. Absolutely zero value. -
53:22 - 53:25One person said her eyeshadow
came shattered. -
53:26 - 53:30And then a backer named, Denisha, was
super disappointed and she said she lost -
53:30 - 53:33all complete hope that anything would
work out for her. She said, "I was -
53:33 - 53:37happy to get one of the signed cards
[because at this point everybody thinks -
53:37 - 53:40that they're hand signed], but I'm
already not enthused about this makeup -
53:41 - 53:45working for me. The eyeshadow is beautiful
and I might use it as a highlighter, -
53:45 - 53:47but the "bronzer" is a complete
waste of time. -
53:47 - 53:51I really don't think based on the poll
winners, etc. that this line will work -
53:51 - 53:56out for melanated Backers."
Even Beauty Pop, who is closer to my -
53:57 - 53:59skin tone, swatches the bronzer
and pretty much says the same thing. -
53:59 - 54:01So the postcard was a complete scam. And
it doesn't seem like Glamour Dolls knew -
54:03 - 54:05that, but Lisa had to have known that.
-
54:05 - 54:10Where did Glamour Dolls get the
information that 1. these were vintage -
54:10 - 54:13and 2. that they would be hand signed
because neither of those things were true. -
54:14 - 54:17Did Lisa lie to them? Did Glamour Dolls
know it and lie to the Backers? -
54:18 - 54:22I would dare to say Lisa probably
misled Glamour Dolls. -
54:22 - 54:27But it's Glamour Dolls fault for not even
seeing the postcards and verifying what -
54:27 - 54:30they were before giving false
promises to the Backers. -
54:30 - 54:33So at this point there starts to be
kind of a split between the backers. -
54:33 - 54:36Some people are really excited and some
people are starting to get -
54:36 - 54:38really disappointed. There's
a backer named Lizzie and she says, -
54:38 - 54:42"Honestly if I'd known about the other
shades not being available through the. -
54:42 - 54:46Kickstarter when this whole thing
started, it wouldn't have bothered me. -
54:46 - 54:50What really irritates me is that we keep
finding out about these things being sent -
54:50 - 54:54out in Ipsy bags, Hot Topic suddenly
selling items from this collection, etc. -
54:54 - 54:59on our own and THEN we hear from you about
it once someone calls you out and questions -
54:59 - 55:03It's important to be up front and open
with your Backers, so they feel like -
55:03 - 55:05they can trust you."
-
55:05 - 55:08The problem is that they
weren't trustworthy. That's the problem. -
55:08 - 55:10And that's what a lot of the
Backers were learning. -
55:10 - 55:13And beyond that, people were really
disappointed about the design of the -
55:13 - 55:17eyeshadow and the bronzer themselves
because the Lisa Frank artwork was on the -
55:17 - 55:21outer cardboard box and not on the actual
packaging because a lot of people - I know -
55:21 - 55:27I do- I tend to throw away the outer box
and I USE the product itself, so the -
55:27 - 55:32artwork, I thought, was going to be on the
actual product and not on the outer carton -
55:32 - 55:34so people were really disappointed
about that, too. -
55:34 - 55:39On November 22nd, they send out a mock-up of the lip balm tin. This is the first
-
55:39 - 55:42time we see the lip balm tin.
And it looks kind of cute. -
55:42 - 55:46But like I said at this point, we kind of
are starting to get that split between -
55:46 - 55:49the Backers, but most people seem to
still be really excited. -
55:49 - 55:53In December of 2017, they send out a
big update with progress on -
55:53 - 55:57all of the products.
They stress again the process of -
55:57 - 55:59creating all of this product.
-
55:59 - 56:04They get the sample, they get the artwork
from Lisa, they get the artwork put onto -
56:04 - 56:08the sample, they send that sample over
to Lisa for approval and then she has the -
56:08 - 56:13opportunity to revise the sample
and change things, then they have to send -
56:13 - 56:17that back to the lab with the revisions
and it doesn't seem like Lisa has a limit -
56:17 - 56:20on how many revisions she can make
on a product. -
56:20 - 56:24So, that's why things seem to be taking
so long - is because it's just such a -
56:24 - 56:28multi-step process and where I keep
digging back -
56:28 - 56:32is that - didn't they know this-
when they started the Kickstarter- -
56:32 - 56:35that this was the format they
were working with? -
56:35 - 56:39Why would you tell Backers that there was
an estimated ship date that was- you knew -
56:39 - 56:44100% was going to be impossible, based on
what they're saying here that I'm sure -
56:44 - 56:48that they knew before they started,
I don't understand why they would just -
56:48 - 56:50outright lie like that.
-
56:50 - 56:53Glamour Dolls has created this problem
for themselves. -
56:53 - 56:55Lisa isn't helping- which we'll find
out more in a minute. -
56:55 - 56:58But Glamour Dolls has created this situation.
-
56:58 - 57:02So right now, as of December 17th,
the things that are available for purchase -
57:02 - 57:04were the crease/blending brush,
the blush brush, -
57:04 - 57:07the bronzer,
and the two eyeshadows -
57:07 - 57:08in "Heartthrob" and "Picnic".
-
57:08 - 57:12"Heartthrob" was created specifically
for Hot Topic. "Picnic" was created for -
57:12 - 57:14the Backers, but they were selling
both at Hot Topic. -
57:14 - 57:18For the Unicorn Lippy, they said that the
design was finalized, but that they were -
57:18 - 57:24waiting for the manufacturer to hand paint
the product in order for them to see -
57:24 - 57:26what a final product was going
to look like. -
57:26 - 57:28This was the hand painted product
-is this lippy. -
57:28 - 57:34Each one of these is going to need to be
painted - by a person. 5,000 some of them. -
57:34 - 57:35By a person.
-
57:35 - 57:39They said the vegan leather cosmetic bag,
the eyeliner, the lipbalm tin, -
57:39 - 57:42and the shimmer powder highlighter
were waiting for Lisa's approval. -
57:42 - 57:45The lip mousse was waiting for packaging
to come back because the color of the -
57:45 - 57:49mousse didn't match the cap.
And it was supposed to match the cap -
57:49 - 57:51and the logo and it didn't.
So they were waiting for that. -
57:51 - 57:56The palates were being remade because
they didn't like the way that they folded -
57:56 - 58:00together - they felt like the image didn't
line up properly, so once they got it to -
58:00 - 58:02line up properly, they were going to
send it to Lisa for approval. -
58:02 - 58:06And finally, the nail polish trio-
they were waiting for manufacturing of -
58:06 - 58:09the sample to send to Lisa.
-
58:09 - 58:12(Laughing) You remember that the
nail polish set was a reward back -
58:12 - 58:15in February when the Kickstarter started?
-
58:15 - 58:19Uh yeah, the sample bottles were still
being manufactured- in December. -
58:19 - 58:24People were also asking, Ok, so can we
get an actual ship date? Like what's the -
58:24 - 58:28actual timeline for this? When will
we have products in our hands? -
58:28 - 58:33On December 15th, Glamour Dolls breaks
the sad news that if you had bought two -
58:33 - 58:37of these or if you had bought
any piece of this as a holiday gift -
58:37 - 58:40for a friend or a family member,
that wasn't going to happen. -
58:40 - 58:42BUT they had a solution.
-
58:42 - 58:47And it was a printable card to get your
friend or family member excited -
58:47 - 58:51about the products that they
would never receive. (Laughs) -
58:51 - 58:54Horrible! Horrible!
I don't know what, what the world -
58:54 - 58:55they were thinking.
-
58:55 - 58:59Because it was literally like a card
that they made that had all of the items -
58:59 - 59:02and you were supposed to check off
the items you were giving to your friend -
59:02 - 59:05or your family member and you were
supposed to give them this printed thing -
59:05 - 59:08instead of their gift they were supposed
to get in December. -
59:08 - 59:12Like, "It's coming, it's coming!"
(Heavy sigh) -
59:12 - 59:16I do think, though, that at this point
Glamour Dolls really did think that -
59:16 - 59:19things would eventually come together.
When it would come together - I don't know -
59:19 - 59:22but I think that they did think that it
was still gonna come together eventually. -
59:22 - 59:25Now there is a CLEAR split between
the Backers. -
59:25 - 59:29People who are like, "This is messed up,
we're not getting our stuff, this is terrible." -
59:29 - 59:32And then people who are like,
"Trust the process. It's gonna be ok, -
59:32 - 59:34just trust the process."
-
59:34 - 59:37Glamour Dolls even shared a picture of the
"messed up packaging". -
59:37 - 59:40And I- I swear, I watched this video
like three...four times and I can't see -
59:40 - 59:42anything messed up with it.
-
59:42 - 59:44Can you see what's messed up with it?
-
59:44 - 59:47I don't see anything. It looks fine to me.
And the Backers - their response -
59:47 - 59:48to this video?
-
59:48 - 59:49They didn't see anything wrong either.
-
59:49 - 59:51But nevertheless, this product was not
coming anytime soon. -
59:51 - 59:54Not a lot happened in January of 2018.
-
59:54 - 59:57Mostly it was discussion over the
highlighter and what shade they should do -
59:57 - 60:02for the highlighter. Uh, there was an
opal shade that everybody had picked -
60:02 - 60:06and when they did the swatches of it,
people realized that it wasn't going to -
60:06 - 60:09be as universal as they thought it would
be, so people were complaining that it -
60:09 - 60:12didn't look like anything that they
thought opal would look like. -
60:12 - 60:16So they decided they were also going to
make a second shade - rose gold- -
60:16 - 60:21so that it would work for most people
and that in order to decide which one you -
60:21 - 60:24would get, you would fill out a survey.
They had a Google Form survey you would -
60:24 - 60:28fill out and if you chose one or the other
that's the one that you would get. -
60:28 - 60:32If you didn't choose through that survey,
then Glamour Dolls would just throw one -
60:32 - 60:34or the other in your box for you.
And that's it. -
60:34 - 60:35That's all that happened in January.
-
60:35 - 60:40It is now February of 2018. It is now one
year after the Kickstarter began. -
Not SyncedHere is what's happening.
February 8th, Peter posts a post into the -
Not SyncedKickstarter community. He admits that he's
been slow to communicate and he says that -
Not Syncedsometimes there just isn't
anything new to update. -
Not SyncedRegardless he says that he wants to
communicate more frequently- -
Not Syncedwhich he DOES do.
-
Not SyncedRegarding the delivery schedules
he says that there's just things -
Not Syncedthat are stopping it from going along
and they're just stuck. -
Not SyncedFor example, they said that the original
highlighter powder that they had worked -
Not Syncedout was not good, that it was leaking.
So then they had to start over and get -
Not Syncednew packaging for it.
And then he mentions about the -
Not Syncedhand painting of the damn unicorns -
which you know... -
Not Syncedhand painting 5,549...
(because I counted them) -
Not Synced...unicorns is a lot!
I don't know what kind of logic made you -
Not Syncedthink that that was going to
be a good thing to do. -
Not SyncedBut I guess the problem was that they had
already sneaked this unicorn that was -
Not Syncedgoing to be hand painted to the lower tier
Backers before they added -
Not Syncedthe upper tier Backers and they're just
going to leave it out of the higher tiers? -
Not SyncedThey could have because that would have
been realistic, but they didn't. -
Not SyncedThey added it into all the tiers.
And it's 5,549 Backers -
Not Syncedbecause remember those $200 Backers
are getting TWO unicorns. -
Not SyncedAnd everybody at $20 or more was supposed
to get one of these things. -
Not SyncedBut according to Peter there was good news
because he said that even though -
Not Syncedit was going to cost Glamour Dolls more
he promised that as soon as an item -
Not Syncedwas ready, that they were going to
ship it out. -
Not SyncedEven if it did cost them more money.
-
Not SyncedThen they do something that they
didn't have to do. -
Not SyncedWhich I think was really good of them.
They did a voice call -
Not Syncedwith their Backers on February 14th
and that call does still exist -
Not Syncedand I listened to the whole thing.
-
Not SyncedAnd they really did open it up and
allow anybody with questions -
Not Syncedto join in that call
to ask those questions. -
Not Syncedin that call, they went through each individual product
-
Not Syncedand it seemed like a lot of them were either
-
Not Syncedwaiting for Lisa Frank's artwork
-
Not Syncedor waiting for the Lisa Frank approval
-
Not Syncedand they couldn't constractionally
-
Not Syncedmove forward with anything
-
Not Synceduntil Lisa did those pieces
-
Not Syncedof her contract.
-
Not SyncedPeter also says that once Lisa approves
something, it's still going to take 45 days -
Not Syncedin order for that product to go through
the manufacturing process, -
Not SyncedAnd I'm sitting here thinking, "What about
all those times that you promised backers -
Not Syncedthat you were on schedule, that things
were coming." -
Not SyncedYou knew it was going to take 45 days, a
month and a half once Lisa approved it. -
Not SyncedYou knew you didn't have Lisa's approval,
and in some cases you didn't even have the -
Not Syncedfinal mockup of a product, but you're
still telling people you're on track and -
Not Syncedyou're on time? Why would you do that? Why
would you just lie like that? -
Not SyncedAnd I personally believe it was so that
backers wouldn't ask for refunds -
Not Syncedbecause they couldn't afford to give out
all of those refunds and still have a -
Not Syncedchance of making this happen so they just
lied to keep it all going. -
Not SyncedIn the call, they addressed some of the
most common questions that were happening -
Not Syncedin the community and one of them was about
"Why didn't you tell us that this was -
Not Syncedgoing to be an Ipsy?"
-
Not SyncedI'm going to go ahead and play the clip of
Peter talking now. -
Not SyncedBecause, yeah, you didn't have to say it
was with Ipsy, but you could have said -
Not Synced"Hey, there are a couple of products,
you're going to see them come out -
Not Syncedsomewhere, just so you know, they were
ordered before we started. We actually had -
Not Syncedthese products paid for before the
Kickstarter started, so these are ones -
Not Syncedthat were already pre-ordered, these are
not the products that you're paying for." -
Not SyncedThey didn't have to say that it was Ipsy.
-
Not SyncedThey didn't have to say when they were
coming out, but just to make a general -
Not Syncedstatement that should not have violated
the non-disclosure, just to say that -
Not Syncedsomebody had purchased them.
-
Not SyncedPeter makes it very clear that refunds are
available. He mentions that -
Not SyncedLisa has her own proprietary color
-
Not Syncedand that every single lab has to be taught
how to make this color because it is very -
Not Syncedspecific, copyrighted color by Lisa Frank.
-
Not SyncedAnd then he was asked about the postcard
and his answer is super weird. -
Not SyncedAnd you notice he doesn't mention anything
about the signature not being handsigned. -
Not SyncedNothing about that. Just straight up
trying to gloss it over, like dude, just, -
Not Syncedit's not vintage, it's not vintage.
-
Not SyncedThis is a very interesting part of the
question and answer session -
Not Syncedthat Peter outright lies, again, because
we have the information to prove that he lied. -
Not SyncedSo when asked how big he thought that the
Kickstarter would get, he says this: -
Not SyncedBut we know for a fact that this is
probably not true, at least this is not -
Not Syncedwhat he told the Kickfurther people,
because this is the post that he put in -
Not Syncedthe Kickfurther community. He said that he
thought it was likely that they would hit -
Not Synced2 million dollars on the Kickstarter,
-
Not Syncedwhich would, "lead to an immediate general
house cleaning and pay off whatever little -
Not Synceddebt we have, which is mostly here."
-
Not SyncedHe says that the 2 million dollars he
expected to get from the Kickstarter, -
Not Syncedhe would use that money to pay back the
Kickfurther people. -
Not SyncedThen he would use the Kickstarter money
in order to pay for the products. -
Not SyncedI will, though, give credit where credit
is due in that they did not have to have -
Not Syncedthis call, they didn't have to do all of
these updates, they're not required to do -
Not Syncedthat, but they were, because I genuinely
believe that Glamour Dolls thought this -
Not Syncedwas going to happen, but it's just they're
not setting realistic goals, that's the -
Not Syncedbig problem.
-
Not SyncedIn March of 2018, Glamour Dolls and the
team, like this is enough, we are flying -
Not Syncedout to hang out with Lisa and find out
what the hell is happening, so they fly -
Not Syncedthe team out to "work out much of the
remaining artwork." Then they start -
Not Syncedposting this matrix system where it talks
about where each product is in the -
Not Syncedproduction process. It looks like the most
delay is happening on the Wengie palette, -
Not Syncedthe highlighters, and the nail polish set,
-
Not Syncedand that's the only update they give in
March, is that, "Hey, we're meeting with -
Not SyncedLisa, we're working out the artwork," and
then nothing, and the backers are -
Not Syncedabsolutely losing it at this point. Like,
almost everybody is turing on them, 'cause -
Not Syncedthey're like, "What the hell is happening,
what is this matrix, why is this stuff not -
Not Synceddone yet? Because almost a year ago you
told us this stuff was already done and -
Not Syncednow you're telling me it's not done?"
-
Not SyncedA backer named Kristen said, "I backed
this while pregnant with my now 10 month -
Not Syncedold child and still nothing."
-
Not SyncedSo, obviously, they're reading this over
at Glamour Dolls, and they wanted to post -
Not Syncedsomething, so basically, they posted at
the end of March, "Uh, yeah, we don't have -
Not Syncedanything else to tell you, so yeah, that's
it. That's all I got for ya, is we don't -
Not Syncedhave anything else to tell you," and then
people lost it even more. -
Not SyncedIt was so bad, people were so frustrated
-
Not SyncedAnd I'm laughing because it's so
ridiculous. It is so ridiculous. -
Not SyncedThe matrix that they posted at the end was
basically the same thing but in more -
Not Syncedfriendly language. That's it. That was the
only update. -
Not SyncedOh wait, there was one more thing. There
was a final draft of the cosmetic bag. -
Not SyncedThey did post that, and it's so cute. It's
so cute,my friends .Too bad nobody got it. -
Not SyncedNow it is April of 2018, the 1 year
anniversary of the end of the Kickstarter -
Not Syncedcampaign, and the only thing that's been
shipped out are the eyeshadow and the -
Not Syncedbronzer to a select handful of people who
were at the very top tier or people that -
Not Syncedadded them onto their bags. They've also
shipped out the blush brush or the crease -
Not Syncedbrush to anybody that added them, but
those top-tier backers have not received -
Not Syncedthem. But things get a little bit more
hopeful becuase we finally get the final -
Not Synceddraft of the Bold and Bright palette, and
it is freaking adorable. It is so cute. I -
Not Syncedmean, you can't tell me that's not cute.
That is so cute. -
Not SyncedAnd of course, they give us a new matrix.
And if you look at it, it's like -
Not Syncedeverything's waiting for Lisa.
Everything's waiting for lisa. -
Not SyncedThey keep dragging it out throughout
April, dragging it out, giving us a little -
Not Syncedsneak peek of this product here, a little
sneak peek of that product here, we got a -
Not Syncedphoto of 2 palettes, we got arm swatches
of the shades, we got a video of the -
Not SyncedNatural palette. The matrix now says that
Lisa has the samples and they're waiting -
Not Syncedfor her feedback. By the end of April, we
get to see the box that the Lippie is in, -
Not Syncedand it's so freaking cute, and we're
starting to get excited again, this is -
Not Syncedfinally coming to an end, we're finally
going to get our products. -
Not SyncedIn May of 2018, Glamour Dolls, in the
nicest way possible, is saying Lisa's -
Not Syncedbeing a pain in the ass. They're trying
really hard to be kind and professional, -
Not Syncedbut mostly there's a problem with these
matte mousse products. The full -
Not Syncedexplanation is going to be on the screen
for you, you can pause to read it, but, -
Not Syncedbasically, she didn't like the way that
the color looked paired with the cap, so -
Not Syncedshe wanted them to make 4 mockups of 4
different empty containers, and then she -
Not Syncedwould decide which one matched with the
lip color the best. And they said that's -
Not Syncedwhat's been holding up that particular
product. We also got a picture of the lip -
Not Syncedbalm tin finished. It is perfection. It is
so adorable. -
Not SyncedThe matrix for mid-May is still nothing
approved by Lisa. Glamour Dolls is making -
Not Syncedprogress on their end, but no updates on
Lisa's end. At the end of May we see the -
Not Synceddraft of the nail polish bottles and oh my
gosh, are these things freaking gorgeous -
Not Syncedor what. I can't even, I can't even. They
said that the colors weren't, of course, -
Not Syncedthe colors that were going to be in the
bottles, but these were the draft bottles -
Not Syncedwe have been waiting for since February of
2017 when we were told that they were -
Not Syncedreward, they are finally here and they are
gorgeous, they did not disappoint. -
Not SyncedBut then, I'm sorry to say, my friends,
there was silence for 4 months. -
Not SyncedAnd silence for 4 months is a very, very
bad sign. -
Not Synced[music]
-
Not SyncedSeptember 21st of 2018, I'm going to read
this to you in full, because I feel like -
Not Syncedyou need to feel the emotion in this one.
Because, you know that meme, or that -
Not Syncedlittle video where it's like, "and this is
when she knew, she f*cked up?" -
Not SyncedThat, this is it. This is the moment where
we all knew we were getting nothing. Here -
Not Syncedit goes. "Hi Everyone, Thank you for your
patience as we've gathered facts and -
Not Syncedinformation to provide you with a thorough
update on this campaign. We apologize for -
Not Syncedthe delay in delivery of the products and
understand that you might be disappointed. -
Not SyncedPlease know that we're making significant
efforts to deliver the products to you. -
Not SyncedDespite those efforts, we are encountering
issues we never imagined when we -
Not Syncedenthusiastically began this campaign. This
update is to share information with you -
Not Syncedregarding our efforts to fulfill our
obligations and to account for the money -
Not Syncedthat you so generously committed to this
campaign. Below is how much we raised in -
Not Syncedthis campaign. This itemized list that
follows shows you how we have -
Not Syncedappropriately expended those funds
towards completion of this project: -
Not SyncedTotal Kickstarter funds raised including
Backer Kit: $475,685.00 -
Not Synced'Cause remember, they opened Backer Kit
after the Kickstarter ended so people that -
Not Syncedmissed out on the Kickstarter could fund
the project through Backer Kit, get -
Not Syncedindividual products or get in on those
bundles. Then he continues. -
Not SyncedCost Expended Towards Completion
-
Not SyncedProduction Sample Costs: $15,329.00,
Contractual Payments to LFI, which is Lisa Frank Incorporated: $510,754.04 -
Not SyncedContractual Payments to LFI, which is
Lisa Frank Incorporated: $510,754.04 -
Not SyncedContractual Artwork Fees to Lisa Frank
Incorporated: $45,615.00 -
Not SyncedTotal spent: $571,698.04, which, if you do
the math, is about $100,000 more than they -
Not Syncedraised in the Kickstarter and the
Kickfurther. Then he continues reiterating -
Not Syncedall the steps that it takes to make the
product, and you'll notice, all the fluffy -
Not Syncedlanguage he was using to describe Lisa,
that she was "using her creative genius" -
Not Syncedand that she's "amazing," it's all gone.
It's now "LFI." There's no mention of Lisa -
Not Syncedanymore. It's all LFI. And that's it. It's
become very, very professional. No more -
Not SyncedMister Nice Glamour Dolls. The next chart
-
Not Syncedis not a matrix of hope, but a matrix of
death, unfortunately, the death of this -
Not Syncedproject because we learn what we already
knew in a different format. The products -
Not Syncedthat have already been released: the 2
brushes, the bronzer, and the eyeshadow -
Not Syncedin September of 2018 are still the only
ones that are ready because everything -
Not Syncedelse is waiting for Lisa. Either they are
waiting for Lisa to create artwork or they -
Not Syncedare waiting for Lisa to approve the final
sample. The post continues: "We hope that -
Not Syncedthe information above demonstrates that we
have been working hard to deliver these -
Not Syncedproducts to you. As a company, Glamour
Dolls is committed to producing the -
Not Syncedhighest quality makeup products for you at
an affordable, accessible, and inclusive -
Not Syncedprice. And to that end, we are committed
to making this right for you. Please know -
Not Syncedthat we are continuing to work towards
fulfilling our obligations to you and that -
Not SyncedGlamour Dolls will do everything it can
to make sure that this situation is -
Not Syncedresolved. We will continue to make
additional updates as we have more -
Not Syncedinformation. We sincerely thank all of our
backers for your collective patience. With -
Not Syncedgratitude, Peter and the Glamour Dolls Team
-
Not SyncedAnd this is when the backers collectively
lost their sh*t. A backer named Lauren -
Not Syncedsummed it up very, very well. She said,
"Lisa Frank is still up and running in -
Not Syncedterms of selling product- if you go to
their site they still have things for -
Not Syncedsale. Glamour Dolls has a fully
Functioning website selling tons of makeup -
Not SyncedThey even promote on Instagram to this
day, both of them. I am outraged. EVERYONE -
Not Syncedthey got almost HALF A MILLION DOLLARS
from us. When are we going to come -
Not Syncedtogether and do something? $100 is not
nothing to me, I am not rich, I am a -
Not Syncedsingle mom and this is something I treated
myself to. This is so wrong. Where is our -
Not Syncedmoney? How do you have money to make and
sell other products and not refund us or -
Not Syncedmake our products we paid for over 2 years
ago? Because she said two years ago, -
Not Syncedbecause we don't get another update from
Glamour Dolls until April of 2020. We are -
Not Syncednow 3 years after the end of the
Kickstarter. This is the last update that -
Not Syncedthe backers will ever receive. Well, at
least up until February of 2024, that -
Not Syncedwe've ever received. This is what it says,
and keep in mind, this is right after the -
Not Syncedpandemic began. Hi Backers, We hope that
everyone and their loved ones are healthy -
Not Syncedand safe during this crazy time. It has
been a long while since our last update -
Not Syncedbut that does not mean that we have
forgotten about you or have stopped -
Not Syncedfighting to get you resolution on this
project. We want to start by thanking all -
Not Syncedthe amazing people who have supported us
through this very difficult last 2 years, -
Not Syncedespecially the trade partners, friends and
family who have lived this with us. Please -
Not Syncedunderstand that in July of 2018 the artist
who we were collaborating with on this -
Not Syncedcampaign threatened to take a legal action
against us if we continued to update you -
Not Syncedabout the status of the products. To date
we have paid over $750,000 to the artist -
Not Syncedin artwork fees, royalty advances and
sales royalties, much of which was for the -
Not Syncedproducts you purchased and did not
receive. It included all the money raised -
Not Syncedby this Kickstarter campaign, whatever
money we had as a business and loans that -
Not Syncedwe and our families personally took out
to continue paying into this license. We -
Not Syncedwere blessed that a few law firms that
heard our situation reached out to help -
Not Syncedand we are continuing to work with them
and follow their guidance as we take the -
Not Syncedappropriate steps forward. Last year, we
met with our state's attorney general's -
Not Syncedoffice where we shared the full collection
of products. The included items that were -
Not Syncedproduced, like brushes, as well as
production-ready samples that were ready -
Not Syncedto manufacture in the spring of 2018. We
also provided proof of all funds received -
Not Syncedand all the payments made to the artist.
Over the past few years, we have learned -
Not Syncedwe are not the first people to have a
negative experience working with this -
Not Syncedartist, and then they link a Jezebel
article, which is full of all kinds of -
Not Syncedstuff, I'm going to go ahead and link
Bailey Sarian's video about the Jezebel -
Not Syncedarticle down below if you want to hear all
the sordid details of that, and I'll also -
Not Syncedlink the Jezebel article itself. Then they
continue, nor are we the last, and this is -
Not Syncedan article from LA Weekly about another
business deal Lisa Frank did in 2019 that -
Not Syncedbad. And then the letter continues. While
many of you are frustrated, there are a -
Not Syncednumber of people in this campaign who have
made it a mission to bully, defame and -
Not Syncedharass us on social media. Some have gone
as far as posting the home addresses of -
Not Syncedour team members or their families online.
Moving forward we will not tolerate this -
Not Syncedbehavior and will take appropriate action
if necessary. Thank you for being patient -
Not Syncedwith us as we continue to work with our
lawyers and trade partners. We are -
Not Syncedfighting to get you your money back and to
get Glamour Dolls back on its feet as a -
Not Syncedbusiness. Sincerely, Peter and the Glamour
Dolls Team -
Not SyncedBefore I start the conclusion of this
video, I wanna be very clear that I -
Not Syncedbelieve that Glamour Dolls played a huge
role in the misleading and the lying that -
Not Syncedthey did to backers. That's what this
whole video has been about. They set out -
Not Syncedunrealistic expectations and never let
anybody that funded the unrealistic -
Not Syncedexpectations know that things were
unrealistic until it came out to the -
Not Syncedpublic, until they were forced to tell the
backers that they had been lying to them. -
Not SyncedThey did everything they could to string
backers along to make sure that they -
Not Syncedcouldn't get refunds. Because a lot of us,
once this hit, of course, wanted a refund. -
Not SyncedWe knew we weren't getting our products.
Nobody was getting anything else, but by -
Not Syncednow, we couldn't go to our banks. Even by
the time we hit that update in September -
Not Syncedof 2018, most banks will not allow you to
get money back more than a year after your -
Not Syncedpurchase. I don't know of any bank that
will allow you to do that. So there was no -
Not Syncedway at this point that we could get our
money back and I think that was the goal -
Not Syncedof Glamour Dolls, was to hold on to all of
our money because they could not afford to -
Not Syncedlose it, even if it meant us never getting
our products. I also believe that Glamour -
Not SyncedDolls really did think that eventually,
this would all go through. They were in -
Not Syncedtoo deep financially to back out now. My
goal of this entire video was to show you -
Not Syncedwhat it was like to be a backer, to show
you the rollercoaster that Glamour Dolls -
Not Syncedknowiningly put us on, the way they
manipulated us and lied to us, but what we -
Not Synceddid not know was this next piece that I
want to end the video with, which is what -
Not SyncedLisa was doing to Glamour Dolls, according
to Glamour Dolls and the court documents -
Not Syncedthat I was able to track down. I was only
able to access one court document from -
Not Syncedthis. They have a bunch of other ones that
are available to people that have access -
Not Syncedto that system. I do not have access to it
so I was not able to look at them, but the -
Not Synceddocument I was able to look at, I found
out a lot. The original contract was -
Not Syncedsigned between the companies in June of
2016. That was supposed to last until -
Not SyncedDecember of 2017, where Glamour Dolls
would sell cosmetic products branded with -
Not SyncedLFI's artwork and/or trademark their
licensed products. Until December 21st of -
Not Synced2017, when the contract ended, Lisa Frank
was guaranteed, among other things, a -
Not Syncedminimum royalty payment. Glamour Dolls
claimed that in June of 2017, Lisa started -
Not Syncedbeing slow to review samples, and that
led them to start falling behind. -
Not SyncedRemember, the products they were making at
this time were the 2 brushes, the -
Not Syncedeyeshadow, and the bronzer that were paid
for by the Kickfurther campaign. So, -
Not Syncedaround when the contract was supposed to
end, they say it was somewhere around -
Not SyncedDecember 17th, Lisa threatened to cease
production on all outstanding products, -
Not Syncedincluding discussions and review feedback,
and approval on already submitted samples -
Not Syncedunless Glamour Dolls signed another
licensing agreement. They called it the -
Not Synced2017 agreement and "tendered the first
guaranteed minimum royalty payment for -
Not Syncedsuch in advance." Glamour Dolls says that
"under extreme duress" they signed a new -
Not Syncedcontract that increased Lisa's minimum
royalty payment from $100,000 to $500,000. -
Not SyncedAnd this required quarterly payments
upfront rather than a lump sum at the end, -
Not Syncedand this is where Glamour Dolls screwed
themselves. And I think it was because -
Not Syncedthey were so scared that Lisa was going to
pull out of it, because if Lisa pulled her -
Not Syncedcopyright, they had already promised all
of these products to all of these backers, -
Not Syncedand their contract didn't cover the
production time of those products. -
Not SyncedThe lawsuit says that around June 15th of
2018, this was after the last update in -
Not Synced2018 where they turned everything and
changed everything to LFI instead of Lisa, -
Not SyncedGlamour Dolls paid the 3rd $125,000
minimum guaranteed payment, which was -
Not Syncedoriginally due on June 24th of 2018. They
said that Lisa refused to provide artwork -
Not Syncedexcept samples for review, or engage in
any communication with Glamour Dolls -
Not Synceduntil they paid her that $125,000. This is
why she wasn't approving anything, because -
Not Syncedshe said outright, "I'm not going to do
anything until you give me money. You need -
Not Syncedto give me my sum that was part of the
contract that we signed, and you're -
Not Syncedsupposed to give me quarterly, and if you
don't do it, I'm not doing any more work -
Not Syncedfor you until I get my money." So, they
said they did pay her. They felt like they -
Not Syncedhad to pay her or else everything was
going to be for nothing. They weren't -
Not Syncedgoing to be able to release anything, they
weren't going to be able to sell anything, -
Not Syncedthey were absolutely screwed. So this is
the kicker. After they paid Lisa the -
Not Syncedmoney, Glamour Dolls says that Lisa
"ordered the immediate halt of all product -
Not Synceddevelopment and advised Glamour Dolls that
an official response will be provided -
Not Syncedwithin the next few days." According to
court documents, right after she got paid, -
Not SyncedLisa terminated their contract. I don't
know how she did it, I don't know how she -
Not Syncedterminated it, but apparently, she
terminates the contract. The reason why -
Not Syncedshe did this, my friend, is because there
was another company that wanted to work -
Not Syncedwith her, and she couldn't work with them
if she was still working with Glamour -
Not SyncedDolls. And she was set, most likely, to
make more money from this other contract, -
Not Syncedand that contract was with Morphe LLC. In
November of 2020, Insider published an -
Not Syncedarticle about the collaboration between
Lisa Frank and Morphe. That palette did -
Not Syncedlaunch, and supposedly did very, very
well. It's funny, because I went over to -
Not Syncedthe Insider article, and I was like,
"Oh, that's me, that's me complaining!" -
Not SyncedBecause, me, as a backer, I was like,
"I still haven't got my products from -
Not SyncedGlamour Dolls, why is she collaborating
with Morphe?" So according to Glamour -
Not SyncedDolls, in that article, they say that she
made defamatory statements against Glamour -
Not SyncedDolls which caused "grave damage to
Glamour Dolls' business reputation and -
Not Syncedloss of good will associated with Glamour
Dolls products." That article is gonna be -
Not Syncedlinked down below, I will put a screenshot
of the defamatory statements on the screen -
Not Syncedfor you to read, you can decide whether
they're defamatory or not. The courts have -
Not Syncedyet to decide because in May of 2021,
Glamour Dolls filed an official lawsuit -
Not Syncedagainst LFI. In December of 2021, Glamour
Dolls filed its first amended complaint. -
Not SyncedThat's the one that I was able to see.
This was against Lisa Frank, asserting 9 -
Not Synceddifferent claims. The claims are:
1- Breach of Contract, 2- Breach of Duty -
Not Syncedof Good Faith and Fair Dealing, 3- Fraud,
4- Unjust Enrichment, 5- Business -
Not SyncedDefamation, 6- False Advertising In
Violation of The Federal Lanham Act, -
Not Synced7- Trade Libel/Product Disparagement/
Injurious Falsehood, 8- Tortious -
Not SyncedInterference with Business Expectations,
and 9- Liability for the Torts, Breaches -
Not Syncedand Debts of Defendant LFI/Piercing the
Corporate Veil -
Not SyncedI don't know what half that stuff means,
Imma be 100% with you, I don't know what -
Not Syncedthat means, but what I do know is what the
courts decided on those things as of now. -
Not SyncedFor Count #1- Breach of Contract, it was
partially dismissed. For Counts 2-9, the -
Not Synceddismissal was denied, meaning that the
courts feel that Glamour Dolls has a case -
Not Syncedto push forward to present their evidence
for the rest of the counts. That includes -
Not Syncedthe fraud, that includes the business
defamation, that includes the unjust -
Not Syncedenrichment, and all the things that I
don't even know what it means. What's -
Not Syncedimportant to know here is the most recent
court filing on this was January 26th of -
Not Synced2024. In real time, that was just a couple
of weeks ago. The one before that was on -
Not SyncedDecember 19th of 2023, and again, I can't
access those documents. Hello, editing Jen -
Not Syncedhere. So, I'm editing, and I'm searching
for something random on my computer and I -
Not Syncedfound this. This is a screenshot that I
captured from the Morphe bankruptcy case, -
Not Syncedand in the bankruptcy filings, look what I
found. It is Lisa Frank who says that she -
Not Syncedis owed $55,000 that she never got from
Morphe and is probably losing in their -
Not Syncedbankruptcy, so take that for what you
will, but I could not end the video -
Not Syncedwithout adding that in. Back to the video.
-
Not SyncedI do have a feeling that one day there
will be a part 2 to this video. Because -
Not Syncedthere is more of the story that's going to
unfold, and maybe, just maybe, one day I -
Not Syncedwill have my very own Trapper Keeper
eyeshadow palette. I'm not gonna hold my -
Not Syncedbreath, but based on the court documents,
it is still possible. -
Not SyncedIn conclusion, this is possibly the
biggest hot mess, I would argue, in the -
Not Syncedhistory of makeup launches, especially in
the history of collaborations. This is so -
Not Syncedmuch worse than I ever could have possibly
imagined, from all of the lies to the fake -
Not Syncedvintage postcard to the fake signatures to
the "everything is ready" but it's not, to -
Not Syncedthe leading people on with the samples
and the choices, and the rewards that -
Not Syncedweren't actually rewards, to the things
being sold to retailers before they were -
Not Syncedeven shipped to the backers, the lack of
communication and the too much -
Not Syncedcommunication, the Lisa Frank screwing
over Glamour Dolls so incredibly royally -
Not Syncedthat they really didn't have a lot of
choice but to screw over their backers. -
Not SyncedIn hindsight of course, but there were so
many things that Glamour Dolls could have -
Not Synceddone to avoid a lot of this, and the first
thing they could have done was to not add -
Not Syncedso many products, especially adding so
many products that they knew they couldn't -
Not Synceddeliver on. I do believe with my entire
soul that Glamour Dolls saw those dollar -
Not Syncedsigns, the dollar signs were in their
eyes, when they saw how much money they -
Not Syncedmade off of the Ipsy deal, and they wanted
to multiply that, and multiply that, and -
Not Syncedmultiply that, and, to be honest, that's
what businesses do. They are in the -
Not Syncedbusiness of making money, but this was
just pure bad business. It was bad -
Not Syncedchoosing a business partner, it was a lot
of bad luck, it was a lot of just bad. -
Not SyncedAll compounding into $350,000 of people's
money being given, essentially, to Lisa -
Not SyncedFrank, and her going and collaborating
with Morphe and making more money, and the -
Not Syncedbackers never getting our money back.
-
Not SyncedSo that is the full story of everything
that happened with the Glamour Dolls Lisa -
Not SyncedFrank Kickstarter. If you are still here
with me, hi, thank you so much for being -
Not Syncedhere. If you are still here, leave me a
unicorn or a rainbow emoji to tell me you -
Not Syncedmade it. Thank you so much for watching
this very long video. I hope that you -
Not Syncedfound this ride interesting. I really hope
that you enjoyed this video, and, at this -
Not Syncedpoint, my friend, it is your turn in the
collective brain of makeup awesomeness -
Not Syncedwhere we help each other not to buy crap,
and to buy things that are totally worth -
Not Syncedit, and help us to see red flags in
Kickstarter campaigns so we know when to -
Not Syncedpull our money out. I would love to know
your thoughts about anything I presented -
Not Syncedto you in this video. Were you a backer?
Did you watch what happened in real time? -
Not SyncedAre you new to all of this information? Do
you think we will ever get our products? -
Not SyncedDo you think there's a chance? I would
like to hold on to hope because my money -
Not Syncedis way gone, so, maybe, what, I don't
know, I would like, I don't think so, I -
Not Synceddon't think it's going to happen, but, you
know, maybe a .05% chance, we'll just have -
Not Syncedto wait and see. Thank you again, so, so
much for watching. If you're not done, if -
Not Syncedyou feel like this video wasn't long
enough for you and you want to hang out -
Not Syncedlonger, oh my gosh, I would love for you
to hang out longer, YouTube should be -
Not Syncedrecommending a couple videos for you over
here including a past Behind the -
Not SyncedControversy, YouTube's going to pick the
top one based on your viewing history -
Not Syncedbut if you do gotta head out of here, I'll
get it. This was a long ass video. Thank -
Not Syncedyou for hanging out as long as you did,
love to you and I will see you in a video -
Not Syncedvery, very soon. Bye!
