Not Synced
I'm fascinated how language is central to
-
Not Synced
our world view as indigenous people.
-
Not Synced
I'm a Naheo artist and curator living on
-
Not Synced
Lekwungen territory in Victoria BC.
-
Not Synced
My personal research centers around language
-
Not Synced
revitalization and how it connects us
-
Not Synced
to our cultures and lands.
-
Not Synced
Over the past few years I've been on a
-
Not Synced
journey to learn the Cree language.
-
Not Synced
It has been a challenging and incredibly
-
Not Synced
rewarding experience. Now I want to
-
Not Synced
travel to Alberta, where my ancestors are
-
Not Synced
from to discover the different ways that
-
Not Synced
communities are revitalizing their
-
Not Synced
languages.
-
Not Synced
My mother and I both grew up not knowing
-
Not Synced
anything about our Cree family
-
Not Synced
because she was adopted out at birth
-
Not Synced
as part of the sixties scoop.
-
Not Synced
Twelve years ago we met our Cree family
-
Not Synced
and since then I have been in a
-
Not Synced
process of connecting with the community
-
Not Synced
in Wabasca, Alberta. The place where my
-
Not Synced
(?cocom?), my grandmother Florence,
-
Not Synced
was born.
-
Not Synced
I recently met Nora Yellownee?, an
-
Not Synced
administrator at the local school,
-
Not Synced
Oski Pasikoniwew Kamik.
-
Not Synced
After realizing that we were second
-
Not Synced
cousins, she offered to help me
-
Not Synced
learn about my family tree.
-
Not Synced
(Nora) You have your grandmother, Florence.
-
Not Synced
and her mother is Isabelle, and then,
-
Not Synced
I'm here, and your grandmother. And
your mom?
-
Not Synced
Um, Francine(?).
-
Not Synced
(Nora) They were first cousins or
-
Not Synced
second cousins.
-OK
-
Not Synced
And you're down here.
-I'm down there,
-
Not Synced
yea, this is more than,
-
Not Synced
alot more than I knew
-
Not Synced
from before I met you, before I came up.
-
Not Synced
(Nora) Yea, that's Isabelle.
-
Not Synced
This means alot to me to see this.
-
Not Synced
The more that I see it the more that I
-
Not Synced
see about this, and hear about it,
-
Not Synced
and talk about it, its going to stick and
-
Not Synced
I'll understand more and know more
-
Not Synced
through that process.
-
Not Synced
(Nora) My dream for the language here,
-
Not Synced
starting with the school, is to have
-
Not Synced
people who speak the language speak it
-
Not Synced
everyday because we are not getting that.
-
Not Synced
There are many Cree speakers working here,
-
Not Synced
but they are not speaking it.
-
Not Synced
For people, the young families and young
-
Not Synced
mothers, speak Cree to their children and
-
Not Synced
all the rest of it all follow.
-
Not Synced
Seeing a photo of my Cocom (?) Florence
-
Not Synced
as a young woman created a sense of
-
Not Synced
healing and re connection. After feeling
-
Not Synced
disconnected for most of my life, knowing
-
Not Synced
more about my family's history has
-
Not Synced
allowed me to connect deeper with
-
Not Synced
my ancestors. There is so much more to
-
Not Synced
discover, but like learning the language,
-
Not Synced
this will take time.
-
Not Synced
The Kapaskwatinak Cultural Education
-
Not Synced
Center is a place for the Children of
-
Not Synced
Wabaska to connect to the land
-
Not Synced
and their culture.
-
Not Synced
Knowledge Keeper Lorraine Cardinal helps
-
Not Synced
guide the children through land based
-
Not Synced
education including coming of age
ceremonies.
-
Not Synced
I'm excited to learn about these teachings
-
Not Synced
since I didn't have the opportunities to
-
Not Synced
experience them. Growing up disconnected
-
Not Synced
from community and family.
-
Not Synced
The reason that I do these things,
-
Not Synced
like the coming of age because its
-
Not Synced
also my responsibility as a Naheo School
-
Not Synced
to protect the children, creator's
-
Not Synced
children. We need to teach them those
-
Not Synced
protocols. We need to teach them
-
Not Synced
values. They need to know them so that
-
Not Synced
they don't end up getting hurt in
-
Not Synced
the future and that shame of our
-
Not Synced
language and who we are, and our
-
Not Synced
cerimonial ways. Losing those has caused
-
Not Synced
big destruction in our communities
-
Not Synced
because our children as they're growing
-
Not Synced
up, they know who they are, they came
-
Not Synced
with the gift of knowing who they are.
-
Not Synced
I have a responsibility to pass those
-
Not Synced
teachings on to other children too
-
Not Synced
because they will experiment, they will
-
Not Synced
explore and we want to prevent them
-
Not Synced
from hurting each other or
hurting themselves.
-
Not Synced
(Singing and drums)
-
Not Synced
(Lorraine) They call that (??????????),
-
Not Synced
young manhood and young womanhood.
-
Not Synced
I want to thank you and honor you for
-
Not Synced
coming into this world. You are a
-
Not Synced
blessing to us. We are so very honored
-
Not Synced
to have you as part of
-
Not Synced
us, Naheo school. Always remember
-
Not Synced
to hold your head up, don't be ashamed
-
Not Synced
and always accept yourself for who you are
-
Not Synced
and honor those gifts you brought
-
Not Synced
with you and welcome into
-
Not Synced
womanhood. Welcome.
-
Not Synced
It truly is a blessing and an honor to
-
Not Synced
have you as a young Naheo (Iskhoo?),
-
Not Synced
A young Naheo woman and welcome.
-
Not Synced
(children talking)
-
Not Synced
(Lorraine) Somehow, someway fear got
-
Not Synced
instilled in us people. Shame got
-
Not Synced
instilled in us as indigenous people.
-
Not Synced
Our children, what they experienced here
-
Not Synced
today taught them how sacred they are,
-
Not Synced
how important they are, how
-
Not Synced
beautiful they are and that they are not
-
Not Synced
just beautiful in physical form. That
-
Not Synced
they're beautiful in spiritual form too.
-
Not Synced
All we need to do is believe in them, to
-
Not Synced
love them, and to tell them that they're
-
Not Synced
important and they'll start feeling
-
Not Synced
good about themselves. I'm proud of
-
Not Synced
them. Their spirit is still alive and well.
-
Not Synced
(Narrator) What do you see being the way
-
Not Synced
forward so that these young ones in the
community
-
Not Synced
can not only understand the language
-
Not Synced
and its relationship to their spirit
-
Not Synced
and their relationship, to the land
-
Not Synced
to each other and to themselves but be
-
Not Synced
speaking it? How do you feel about
-
Not Synced
the future of the language in these
-
Not Synced
next generations to come?
-
Not Synced
We have to believe in ourselves to be able
-
Not Synced
to do it, and we need to set our goal and
-
Not Synced
if it revitalizes the language then lets
-
Not Synced
do that. How do we learn Cree? We learned
-
Not Synced
it sitting around with the old people
-
Not Synced
visiting eachother and our parents
-
Not Synced
speaking to us, you know? So, we can get
-
Not Synced
it back. We just need to do it.
-
Not Synced
John Bigstone is a Wabiskaw elder
-
Not Synced
who carries vast spiritual and
-
Not Synced
ceremonial knowledge.
-
Not Synced
He invited me to the land where he holds
-
Not Synced
sweat lodge ceremonies to share teachings
-
Not Synced
about the spirit within our languages.
-
Not Synced
(Music)
-
Not Synced
(Inhales deeply)
-
Not Synced
It clears your mind when you breathe in
-
Not Synced
this smudge.
-
Not Synced
English language is inadequate if you are going
-
Not Synced
to describe spirit.
-
Not Synced
Its inadequate.
-
Not Synced
They named it according to their
-
Not Synced
connection to the plant becuase they spoke
-
Not Synced
to the plant and they had a connection.
-
Not Synced
They had a connection to all of life. They
-
Not Synced
understood their environment.
-
Not Synced
They understood that everything was alive,
-
Not Synced
and your spirtit has a connection to that
-
Not Synced
spirit of mother earth, and everything
-
Not Synced
that grows on her body.
-
Not Synced
Prior to contact, everything that was
-
Not Synced
described in a more spiritual way.
-
Not Synced
You know, had a spiritual meaning.
