    that in a couple of decades.

    That's just the way it goes with movies.

    that I ever saw was
    the original "Jaws" in summer camp.

    It was terrifying,

    and now you go back
  • 0:37 - 0:41
    and look at the mechanical shark
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    that jumped onto the boat,
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    the great white,
    over 20 feet long, thrashing about,
  • 0:48 - 0:54
    and you go, "That is a ridiculous,
    stupid-looking thing."

    So, I feel pretty clear
    that we have come a long way
  • 1:00 - 1:06
    since the '70s in terms
    of graphics.

    - [Narrator] This constant
    improvement is not limited
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    to special effects --
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    sound quality, picture quality,
    theater seats.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    You name it,
    it seems to have improved.

    Well, maybe not the acting.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    - [Edward] Oh no, not the bees!
    Not the bees! Ahh!

    - [Narrator] Economists have a term
    for this type of improvement --
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    "creative destruction."
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    - [Tyler] Creative destruction was
    a term in Economics
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    coined by an Austrian economist,
    Joseph Schumpeter,
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    early in the 20th century.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    It's really become
    a central driving idea in Economics.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
    - [Narrator] Creative destruction
    describes the continual process
  • 1:41 - 1:45
    of innovation in which new products
    and services replace outdated ones.

    Take photos -- we live in a world
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    of smartphones, Instagram,
    and augmented reality.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    How we got here reveals
    a long and winding path
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    of creative destruction.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    - When I was a kid,
    you take a photo,
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    and the Polaroid comes out,
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    you wave it around because you think
    it's going to make it dry faster.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    I don't know
    if that actually worked.
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    And it's several minutes later,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    and it probably doesn't
    look very good,
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    but you have it!
  • 2:12 - 2:16
    And 10 years later, it's all faded,
    and it probably doesn't keep.

    - [Narrator] Before the digital era,
    you might have a Polaroid
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    or you might buy film,
    typically from Kodak.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    You had to pay
    a few dollars for film,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    which got you about 20 pictures,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    and then pay more
    to get them developed.
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    - [man] Got double prints with mine!
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    - [Narrator] If, whoops,
    your eyes were shut -- too bad!
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    You didn't know until days later.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    And if you accidentally
    opened your camera,
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    poof, your pictures are gone!
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    Digital cameras came on the scene
    at the end of the 20th century.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    Entrepreneurs quickly improved
    the cameras, the software,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    and the accessories.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    People increasingly switched
    away from film.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    It was cheaper, easier
    and more enjoyable.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    These entrepreneurs represent
    the creative side
  • 2:53 - 2:54
    of creative destruction.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    But what about the flip side,
    the destruction?
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    Polaroid employed
    over 20,000 people in their heyday.
  • 3:00 - 3:05
    Kodak dwarfed Polaroid,
    employing over 120,000 employees
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    and being one of the most
    well-known companies in the world.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    The digital age,
    while rejoiced by consumers,
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    ushered them both
    into bankruptcy.
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    - But let's be clear, the people
    that used to make the Polaroids
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    and the Kodaks
    don't like that development
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    because they just lost jobs.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    - [Narrator] Polaroids have had
    a bit of a resurgence lately
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    as a retro product,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    but that's actually
    not the same company
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    that made the originals.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    That Polaroid is long gone.
  • 3:32 - 3:36
    See, there are two sides
    of creative destruction.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    Entrepreneurs inventing new products
    or ways to save money
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    are how we improve
    our standard of living.
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    These improvements are
    the foundation of prosperity,
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    and positively impact
    generation after generation.
  • 3:47 - 3:52
    But the flip side can make jobs
    or even whole industries go extinct.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    Unlike the games,
    that pain typically subsides.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    People usually find new jobs.
  • 3:57 - 4:01
    Most of those thousands
    of employees at Polaroid and Kodak
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    went on to other types of work.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    When you take the long view,
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    these job changes
    have historically been beneficial.
  • 4:08 - 4:12
    In the 1800s, more than half
    of the United States
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    was employed in farming.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    Because of time-saving inventions
    like the tractor,
  • 4:17 - 4:21
    farmers now make up
    less than 2% of the workforce.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    - Now you might think,
    "My goodness! Those poor farmers!
  • 4:23 - 4:27
    Where did they go? What kind of jobs
    could they possibly have had?"
  • 4:27 - 4:31
    But by liberating that labor,
    we made it possible for people
  • 4:31 - 4:34
    to do things,
    like produce automobiles,
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    produce airplanes,
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    for more people
    to become entertainers
  • 4:38 - 4:42
    or movie stars,
    more people to become doctors.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    - [Narrator] So in the long run,
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    we have fewer people
    working with film
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    and more building
    photo apps and the like.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    However, in the short run,
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    the transition can
    be extremely painful.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    If you've spent your life perfecting
    the craft of developing film,
  • 4:56 - 5:00
    you're not walking out of Kodak
    and into a sweet gig at Instagram.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    You might just be out of a job
    and out of luck.
  • 5:02 - 5:05
    Creative destruction comes
    in many forms.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    We often think
    of the transformative technology,
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    like the tractor,
    or the digital camera,
  • 5:09 - 5:12
    or the smartphone,
    which fundamentally changes
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    how we do things.
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    Here's a not so obvious source
    of creative destruction -- trade.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    - Trading with another nation,
    it is a kind of technology.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    It's a way of getting
    something else more cheaply.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    You're taking things
    you used to produce,
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    finding a newer, cheaper way
    of doing it --
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    be it with tractors, with robots,
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    or with foreign trade.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
    And they're all technologies
    enabling us to produce
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    new and better things more cheaply.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    - [Narrator] For example,
    roses used to be grown in the U.S.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    raised in heated greenhouses.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    Now, instead of burning fuel
    to keep the roses warm,
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    most of our roses come
    from warm weather climates.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    This creative destruction
    has produced a plentiful supply
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    of affordable roses.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
    But just like with Kodak,
    not everyone benefits.
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    That rose farmer
    in Pennsylvania isn't thrilled
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    by the introduction of foreign roses.
  • 6:03 - 6:04
    She might be out of a job.
  • 6:04 - 6:07
    More than ever, better education
    and training programs are needed
  • 6:07 - 6:11
    so that people can transition
    to new types of work.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    - Why is this so important now?
  • 6:13 - 6:16
    I do think there's
    a very specific reason,
  • 6:16 - 6:20
    and that is the nature of jobs
    and the workplace is changing
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    at an accelerating rate.
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    So the importance of being able
    to retrain yourself,
  • 6:25 - 6:29
    the importance of being able
    to learn how to learn
  • 6:29 - 6:32
    has never been more important
    than it is today.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    - [Narrator] Why did Tyler say
    the workplace is changing

    at an accelerating rate?
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    Remember how
    the information revolution
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    allowed companies to slice
    and dice their factories
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    into a global supply chain?
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    That has increased competition
    in the workplace.
  • 6:44 - 6:48
    Take Apple -- they're evaluating
    every link of their supply chain.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    Can they make this step cheaper?
  • 6:51 - 6:53
    Can they make this component better?
  • 6:53 - 6:55
    Back in the old days,
    employees just had to worry
  • 6:55 - 6:58
    about losing their job
    to someone nearby.
  • 6:58 - 7:02
    Now they might lose it
    to a person or robot or software
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    that could come
    from anywhere on the planet.
  • 7:04 - 7:08
    This means that jobs appear,
    disappear, and evolve
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    more quickly than ever.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    That sounds intimidating,
    but remember,
  • 7:12 - 7:15
    this competition drives
    the frequent explosions
  • 7:15 - 7:17
    of creative destruction
    that are the signs
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    of a healthy, vibrant economy.
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    But we can't forget
    the flip side of the coin.
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    There are those that are hurt
    by these explosions.
  • 7:24 - 7:28
    - So there's no question
    that creative destruction
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    has been a great thing
    for human beings.
  • 7:30 - 7:35
    We just need to remember that
    the people that are displaced --
  • 7:35 - 7:38
    we have to make sure
    that we don't forget those people.
  • 7:38 - 7:40
    We have to make sure
    that they have opportunities too.
