More than funny | Michael Jr. | TEDxUniversityofNevada
-
0:17 - 0:18Thanks, man.
-
0:18 - 0:21I'm excited about being here.
We're going to have some fun. -
0:21 - 0:22My name is Michael Jr.
-
0:22 - 0:24I'm going to do some jokes.
-
0:24 - 0:26(Laughter)
-
0:26 - 0:28(Applause)
-
0:28 - 0:33Yet, at the same time,
I’d like to explain to you how life -
0:33 - 0:35well, how comedy works.
-
0:36 - 0:37So let's stop right here.
-
0:37 - 0:40I actually like the city of Reno a lot.
-
0:40 - 0:42I was here once...
-
0:42 - 0:43(Applause)
-
0:43 - 0:44I was here once;
-
0:44 - 0:47I was keynote speaking for a corporation
-
0:47 - 0:50and something really kind of strange
happened when I was here. -
0:50 - 0:53Normally, I'm the type of person
I like to be on a stage alone. -
0:53 - 0:55I don't need any help or anybody...
-
0:55 - 0:59So this CEO of this large company
introduces me, and he has the microphone, -
0:59 - 1:03and normally, we have two different mics,
and he leaves, and then, I'm there. -
1:03 - 1:04That's the plan.
-
1:04 - 1:06Dude stays there.
-
1:06 - 1:08(Laughter)
-
1:08 - 1:10I'm standing right next to him
with no mic. -
1:10 - 1:12(Laughter)
-
1:12 - 1:16And then he looks at the audience,
and I'm standing there, and he says... -
1:16 - 1:18First, let me explain this.
-
1:18 - 1:21I'm the type of comedian,
like, I'm observational. -
1:21 - 1:23I pay attention to things
like college students. -
1:23 - 1:25Take someone who goes to a nice school
-
1:25 - 1:27like the University
of Southern California. -
1:27 - 1:30Ask them what school they go to,
you get a nice quick answer, -
1:30 - 1:31- "What school you go to?"
- "USC." -
1:31 - 1:34New York University -
you get a nice quick answer, -
1:34 - 1:35- "What school you go to?"
- "NYU." -
1:35 - 1:37Ask somebody who goes
to community college. -
1:37 - 1:40You get a much longer
response, don't you? -
1:40 - 1:41(Laughter)
-
1:41 - 1:42"What school you go to?"
-
1:42 - 1:46"Well, see, right now, what I'm doing,
I'm gonna get a couple credits, right? -
1:46 - 1:49Then my financial aid
is supposed to come through. -
1:49 - 1:51Then I'm gonna transfer, man.
-
1:51 - 1:53They say school kills creativity anyway.
-
1:53 - 1:55Man, I feel vulnerable.
Is Brené Brown around? -
1:55 - 1:58Man, I feel very vulnerable right now."
-
1:58 - 1:59(Laughter)
-
2:02 - 2:04Let me tell you a little more about me.
-
2:04 - 2:05I love being a dad.
-
2:05 - 2:07And I have five kids, yeah.
-
2:07 - 2:09And I travel a lot
-
2:09 - 2:11so I can see them all.
-
2:11 - 2:12(Laughter)
-
2:16 - 2:19Ha, ha! I'm just playing.
I don't see them, I don't see them. -
2:19 - 2:20(Laughter)
-
2:20 - 2:23No, I do. I have five kids.
They're all with me. -
2:23 - 2:24I live in Dallas now.
-
2:24 - 2:26My kids are awesome.
-
2:26 - 2:27The thing about having a big family is
-
2:27 - 2:30you always have
to figure out ways to save money. -
2:30 - 2:32We wanted to get
our family pictures taken, -
2:32 - 2:33and that stuff was expensive.
-
2:33 - 2:37So what we did to save money was
we all got in the front seat of the car, -
2:37 - 2:39looked both ways, and ran a red light.
-
2:39 - 2:41That's what we did.
That's what we did. -
2:41 - 2:43(Laughter)
-
2:43 - 2:45Two weeks later,
the picture came in the mail. -
2:45 - 2:47(Laughter)
-
2:48 - 2:49But my son blinked
-
2:49 - 2:51so we had to do it again,
we had to do it again. -
2:51 - 2:53This stuff is crazy.
-
2:53 - 2:55(Laughter)
-
2:55 - 2:57I was doing that joke in prison recently.
-
2:58 - 3:01I wasn't in prison,
like, "Hey, I'm funny. Get off me!" -
3:01 - 3:02It wasn't like that.
-
3:02 - 3:03(Laughter)
-
3:04 - 3:08Whenever we're doing a big live event
- like we're doing one tonight in Reno - -
3:08 - 3:11whenever we do a large ticketed event,
a concert, in a city, -
3:11 - 3:14we always look for a homeless shelter,
a prison, an abused children's facility -
3:14 - 3:16to go to during the day to do comedy.
-
3:16 - 3:18So I'm so I'm doing a prison this time...
-
3:18 - 3:19(Applause)
-
3:19 - 3:21It's a TEDx talk,
I don't got that much time. -
3:21 - 3:23You don't got to clap, it's OK.
-
3:23 - 3:24(Laughter)
-
3:26 - 3:29So we're doing this prison,
and I do the joke about the red light, -
3:29 - 3:31and 75% of the prisoners laughed;
-
3:31 - 3:33the rest of them... nothing.
-
3:34 - 3:35Then I realized what was going on.
-
3:35 - 3:38Some of them had been locked up so long,
-
3:38 - 3:40the dude next to them
had to explain the joke. -
3:41 - 3:43He was like, "See, nowadays,
when you run a red light, -
3:43 - 3:46they send a picture
with the ticket in the mail." -
3:46 - 3:48Then he looked at the dude next to him,
-
3:48 - 3:51"A red light is what they use for traffic
when you go down the road." -
3:51 - 3:52(Laughter)
-
3:52 - 3:55And then he said,
"A road is what they use..." -
3:55 - 3:56(Laughter)
-
3:56 - 3:57Wow!
-
3:57 - 3:59Where am I at right now, man?
-
4:00 - 4:02So I'd like to explain to you
how comedy works. -
4:02 - 4:06This is how comedy works;
really all comedy. -
4:06 - 4:09Any time you laugh, this formula
is taking place in one way or another, -
4:09 - 4:13but specifically, with regards
to stand-up, this is how it works as well. -
4:13 - 4:16First, there's a setup,
and then, there's a punchline. -
4:16 - 4:18Let me explain.
-
4:18 - 4:21The setup is when a comedian
will use his talents and resources -
4:21 - 4:22to seize any opportunity
-
4:22 - 4:26to ensure that you, the audience,
are moving in the same direction. -
4:27 - 4:29The punchline occurs
when he changes that direction -
4:29 - 4:31in a way you're not expecting.
-
4:31 - 4:34When you catch on to this change,
you've received the punchline. -
4:34 - 4:38The results are revelation, fulfillment,
and joy expressed through laughter. -
4:38 - 4:39(Laughter)
-
4:39 - 4:41Let me give you an example.
-
4:42 - 4:46A few summers ago, I took my family
on vacation to Mexico. -
4:47 - 4:49The first two days were rough
-
4:49 - 4:52because the people there
kept calling me a "Negro." -
4:52 - 4:54The third day, I realized
they were saying "amigo," -
4:54 - 4:56and it was all cool; that was cool, so...
-
4:56 - 4:58(Laughter)
-
5:01 - 5:04Did you see what just happened
right there? -
5:04 - 5:05(Laughter)
-
5:08 - 5:11So when I was a child, I used
to struggle with my reading. -
5:11 - 5:14I used to really have a hard time reading.
-
5:14 - 5:16I don't know, I just struggled with it.
-
5:16 - 5:17I read now just fine;
-
5:17 - 5:21like the signs over the door
that say 'exite, ' I can read that stuff. -
5:21 - 5:23(Laughter)
-
5:23 - 5:25But when I was a kid,
I used to struggle with my reading. -
5:25 - 5:28I couldn't sound a word out
phonetically, it just didn't work. -
5:28 - 5:33So now, looking back at it, I realize
I developed seven different ways -
5:33 - 5:35to look at a word
to determine what the word was. -
5:35 - 5:38And I just started noticing this
really in junior high. -
5:38 - 5:41So I would look at the font size,
the color, the positioning, -
5:41 - 5:44what's in front of it, what's behind it,
how people responded to it. -
5:44 - 5:46I got really good at
looking at words differently -
5:46 - 5:50to the point in high school,
people didn't know I wasn't really reading -
5:50 - 5:52I was just working it out
really, really fast. -
5:52 - 5:54Now as an adult, I read just fine,
-
5:54 - 5:57but I still have this ability to look
at words, and people, and situations -
5:57 - 5:59seven different ways almost immediately.
-
5:59 - 6:03In fact, it's the primary place
where I pull my comedy from. -
6:03 - 6:07So that very thing from my past
that looked like it was a setback, -
6:07 - 6:09looked like it was some sort of handicap,
-
6:09 - 6:14turns out I'm actually able to use it
for what I'm called to do now. -
6:14 - 6:17So just like you, you've probably
had some sort of setbacks, -
6:17 - 6:20but if you, in a way, would embrace it,
-
6:20 - 6:22you'll probably find there's
more opportunities out there. -
6:22 - 6:24Now I find comedy all over the place.
-
6:24 - 6:25At the airport today:
-
6:25 - 6:28little white kid walked up to me,
asked for an autograph. -
6:28 - 6:31I was like, "Hey buddy, what's your name?"
He said, "I'm Tanner." -
6:31 - 6:33I looked at him, I said, "No, you're not."
-
6:33 - 6:35(Laughter)
-
6:39 - 6:41His mom was cracking up.
-
6:41 - 6:42He was like, "I am Tanner!"
-
6:42 - 6:44(Laughter)
-
6:44 - 6:46"No. Trust me. You're not."
-
6:46 - 6:47(Laughter)
-
6:50 - 6:53Or I'll notice stuff; I saw this dude
with a muscle shirt on. -
6:53 - 6:55You ever see a dude
with a muscle shirt, like a white tank, -
6:55 - 6:57but he ain't got no muscles?
-
6:57 - 6:58(Laughter)
-
6:58 - 7:00What is that? A wife threatener?
-
7:00 - 7:01(Laughter)
-
7:04 - 7:06Depending on
where you're from in the country, -
7:06 - 7:08you'll understand that joke better.
-
7:08 - 7:10(Laughter)
-
7:10 - 7:12And his friend had on a shirt that said,
-
7:12 - 7:15"If you don't speak English,
leave the country." -
7:15 - 7:18Hmm... but it was written
in English. So... -
7:18 - 7:20(Laughter)
-
7:25 - 7:27So I walked up to him,
and I said, "You're dumb!" -
7:27 - 7:28(Laughter)
-
7:28 - 7:31But I said it in Spanish though
so he wouldn't know... -
7:31 - 7:32(Laughter)
-
7:34 - 7:37So I'm able to find comedy
in a bunch of different places -
7:37 - 7:40as a result of embracing what seemed
like it was a handicap from my past. -
7:40 - 7:42I notice even what people say sometimes.
-
7:42 - 7:44Have you ever heard the phrase,
-
7:44 - 7:46"Boy, I wish I could've been
a fly on the wall"? -
7:46 - 7:49Every time I hear that,
I walk up to the person, and I say, -
7:49 - 7:50"And then what?"
-
7:50 - 7:52(Laughter)
-
7:52 - 7:53No, no, no, no.
-
7:53 - 7:54You want to be a fly on the wall
-
7:54 - 7:57so you could hear the information
that was in the room. -
7:57 - 7:58Well, I've done the research.
-
7:58 - 8:00Hmm... Flies don't have ears.
-
8:00 - 8:01(Laughter)
-
8:01 - 8:02Yeah.
-
8:02 - 8:04You would be just as ignorant
as you currently are -
8:04 - 8:05(Laughter)
-
8:06 - 8:08but you would be a fly.
-
8:08 - 8:09(Laughter)
-
8:10 - 8:12Nobody even listens to a fly.
-
8:12 - 8:13(Laughter)
-
8:13 - 8:16I mean, let's say you're
a fly that could read lips. -
8:16 - 8:18What are you going to do
with the information? -
8:18 - 8:19(Laughter)
-
8:19 - 8:21And you've got two days to live.
-
8:21 - 8:22(Laughter)
-
8:22 - 8:23You're making bad choices.
-
8:23 - 8:25(Laughter)
-
8:27 - 8:29Or people will say stuff to me like,
-
8:29 - 8:31"Michael Jr., where you from originally?"
-
8:31 - 8:35I'm like, "Originally? Huh.
Well, I was conceived in Michigan." -
8:35 - 8:36(Laughter)
-
8:36 - 8:38"Before that, I was in my dad."
-
8:38 - 8:39(Laughter)
-
8:39 - 8:40Yeah.
-
8:40 - 8:41(Laughter)
-
8:42 - 8:44"And then, there was
a swim competition," right? -
8:44 - 8:46(Laughter)
-
8:47 - 8:49"And I won, which is crazy"
-
8:49 - 8:50(Laughter)
-
8:50 - 8:52"because currently, I don't swim at all."
-
8:52 - 8:53(Laughter)
-
8:54 - 8:56I used to be pretty good
though, apparently. -
8:56 - 8:58(Laughter)
-
8:59 - 9:00I am not politically correct.
-
9:00 - 9:03I'm just going to tell: I know
I do comedy, but it's just too much work. -
9:03 - 9:04I'm just telling you.
-
9:04 - 9:07You have to watch the news
and know the language. -
9:07 - 9:10If you put the right stuff in your heart,
the right stuff will come out. -
9:10 - 9:13So I never tried,
I never try to be politically correct. -
9:13 - 9:14Some people work hard.
-
9:14 - 9:17I'm at a coffee shop; a white guy
in front of me orders a coffee. -
9:17 - 9:20The lady in front of him
is like, "How do you want it?" -
9:20 - 9:23He looked back at me and was like,
"Um, African-American please." -
9:23 - 9:24(Laughter)
-
9:27 - 9:29I was like, "Cool.
Let me get the Caucasian Mocha. -
9:29 - 9:31Let me get that if I could...
-
9:31 - 9:33just get the Caucasian Mocha, I guess.
-
9:33 - 9:35I'm trying to learn, I'm trying to learn."
-
9:35 - 9:36(Laughter)
-
9:40 - 9:42Coaches would say some stuff too.
-
9:42 - 9:44Ever hear your coach say something like,
-
9:44 - 9:47"The stuff I'm teaching here,
it's not just about this game, -
9:47 - 9:48You could apply it to life."
-
9:48 - 9:51Here's the thing, people:
that's not true. -
9:52 - 9:53I thought it was true.
-
9:53 - 9:54Straight out of high school,
-
9:54 - 9:56one of my first jobs was...
I used to park cars. -
9:56 - 10:00One of the cars was really nice
so I took it for a little spin. -
10:00 - 10:02The company found out,
and my boss lost the account. -
10:02 - 10:04He was yelling at me and screaming
-
10:04 - 10:06I didn't know what to say or do.
-
10:06 - 10:08I thought back
to my high school football coach. -
10:08 - 10:11I looked at my boss, and I was like,
"You know what, man? -
10:12 - 10:14You win some, you lose some, man."
-
10:14 - 10:16(Laughter)
-
10:17 - 10:19"You can't let this one loss
get you down." -
10:19 - 10:20(Laughter)
-
10:20 - 10:23"The important thing is
I went out there, and I had fun.” -
10:23 - 10:25(Laughter)
-
10:26 - 10:27(Applause)
-
10:28 - 10:30Then I got fired, man.
I got fired right away. -
10:30 - 10:32(Laughter)
-
10:34 - 10:36Actually, I do play some basketball.
-
10:36 - 10:38I didn't want to perpetuate
stereotypes, but it's true. -
10:38 - 10:40(Laughter)
-
10:40 - 10:42But in basketball,
you're supposed to run and jump. -
10:42 - 10:44I don't really feel like
doing both all the time. -
10:44 - 10:47So some friends recently
took me ball hunting. -
10:48 - 10:50Some people call it golf or whatever.
-
10:50 - 10:51(Laughter)
-
10:55 - 10:57I shot a 121.
-
10:57 - 10:58That’s what I shot, a 121;
-
10:58 - 10:59and then we had lunch.
-
10:59 - 11:02And it was like, "Hey. We're gonna do
the other nine holes now." -
11:02 - 11:04(Laughter)
-
11:04 - 11:07I said, "I'm not going back
out there, I'm not going." -
11:07 - 11:09Because they lied to get me to go.
-
11:09 - 11:11They’re like, "The greens are awesome.”
-
11:11 - 11:13I was like, "Cool,"
I showed up with some cornbread. -
11:13 - 11:15I was like, "All right ..."
-
11:15 - 11:16(Laughter)
-
11:17 - 11:19I don’t know how to say
cornbread in German. -
11:19 - 11:20I'm sorry.
-
11:21 - 11:22I just did that just for Germany.
-
11:22 - 11:24I've never really been there before.
-
11:25 - 11:27I do think working out is important.
-
11:27 - 11:29I was at the gym the other month.
-
11:30 - 11:32I was going to do some cardio, right?
-
11:32 - 11:33But they moved it upstairs.
-
11:33 - 11:35I ain't going up there, man, please.
-
11:35 - 11:37(Laughter)
-
11:37 - 11:39And I get recognized at the gym.
I got recognized. -
11:39 - 11:42I'm working out,
this lady was like: (Gasping). -
11:42 - 11:43I said, "How you doing?"
-
11:43 - 11:46She said, "You don't understand
Michael Jr.! You're my favorite comedian. -
11:46 - 11:48Every time I see you,
I laugh my butt off." -
11:48 - 11:50I was like, "Uh... Keep laughing!"
-
11:51 - 11:52Keep laughing."
-
11:52 - 11:53(Laughter)
-
11:59 - 12:01So there's a club in Los Angeles.
-
12:01 - 12:03When I moved to Los Angeles,
and I was brand new in comedy, -
12:03 - 12:07there's a club there that it's
like the best club in the country. -
12:07 - 12:10It's called the "Comedy and Magic Club."
It's in Hermosa Beach. -
12:10 - 12:12This club is extremely hard
for a comedian to get into. -
12:12 - 12:14The way I got into this club is
-
12:14 - 12:17a guy named George Wallace
saw me when I lived in New York. -
12:17 - 12:18He knew I was funny and clean
-
12:18 - 12:22so when I moved to Los Angeles,
he took me to the Comedy and Magic Club. -
12:22 - 12:25Now he couldn't get me on stage,
it's way too prestigious of a club. -
12:25 - 12:27They have to know who you are.
-
12:27 - 12:28So he got me into the green room.
-
12:29 - 12:31I'm in the green room
and suddenly, brand new in town, -
12:31 - 12:34and I find myself in a green room
with some soldiers in comedy. -
12:34 - 12:38There's George Wallace,
Garry Shandling, Jay Leno. -
12:38 - 12:39I'm brand new in town.
-
12:39 - 12:42And at the time, a football player
got hit in the eye with a flag, -
12:42 - 12:44and he lost his vision in one eye,
-
12:44 - 12:47and he was suing the league
for 400 million dollars. -
12:47 - 12:50Now, all of these guys are helping
Leno on that joke subject -
12:50 - 12:52for the monologue
for "The Tonight Show" on NBC. -
12:52 - 12:54I ain't saying nothing.
-
12:54 - 12:58I'm just happy to be in the room
sharing french fries with these dudes. -
12:58 - 13:00But your gift will make room for you.
-
13:00 - 13:03So then, they got quiet,
and they all looked at me, -
13:03 - 13:05and I'm thinking, "Oh, snap!
-
13:05 - 13:06This is an opportunity."
-
13:06 - 13:08I said, "Let's see if I got this right.
-
13:08 - 13:11He got hit in the eye with a flag,
he lost his vision in one eye, -
13:11 - 13:14and he's suing the league
for 400 million dollars. -
13:14 - 13:16He’s not gonna see half of it."
-
13:16 - 13:18(Laughter)
-
13:25 - 13:26Like, for real.
-
13:26 - 13:27(Laughter)
-
13:27 - 13:29So here's the thing:
-
13:29 - 13:32how did I get that joke that fast
under that much pressure? -
13:32 - 13:34The truth is it wasn't
as much pressure as you might think -
13:34 - 13:37because I'd been practicing
since I was a child -
13:37 - 13:39in the form of a kid
who was having a hard time reading. -
13:39 - 13:42I was practicing just like
you've been practicing; -
13:42 - 13:44you just didn't know you were practicing.
-
13:44 - 13:46I'm here to let you know
you've been practicing. -
13:46 - 13:48And for a lot of you, guys,
it's game time. -
13:48 - 13:50It's game time.
-
13:50 - 13:54So now, I'm in the club;
and I'm performing there. -
13:54 - 13:56This is probably
like seven, eight years ago. -
13:56 - 13:58I'm headlining at the club,
-
13:58 - 13:59and right before I got on stage,
-
13:59 - 14:01I had a change in mindset about comedy.
-
14:01 - 14:03Most of the time
when a comedian gets onstage, -
14:03 - 14:05he wants to get laughs from people.
-
14:05 - 14:07And I felt a shift take place:
-
14:07 - 14:09Instead of going up there
to get laughs from people, -
14:09 - 14:13I felt like I was supposed
to give them an opportunity to laugh. -
14:13 - 14:15I did a little prayer,
and I clearly felt like -
14:15 - 14:17I was supposed to give
an opportunity to laugh. -
14:17 - 14:18This changed everything.
-
14:18 - 14:20Because now I'm not looking to take;
-
14:20 - 14:22I'm simply looking for
an opportunity to give. -
14:22 - 14:25This is why we go to homeless shelters
and these places. -
14:25 - 14:27In fact, that very night
when I leave the stage, -
14:27 - 14:29I'm outside, people want autographs,
-
14:29 - 14:31we're hanging out taking pictures,
-
14:31 - 14:34and I look across the street,
and I saw a homeless guy. -
14:34 - 14:38I had never seen a homeless guy
outside this club before ever. -
14:38 - 14:40But that doesn't mean
he wasn't there before. -
14:40 - 14:45That just means before,
my mindset was to get laughs from people, -
14:45 - 14:46so why would I even notice him?
-
14:47 - 14:49But now I changed my mindset,
and I see this homeless guy, -
14:49 - 14:51and I have the thought, "What about him?
-
14:51 - 14:54How could I give him
an opportunity to laugh?" -
14:54 - 14:57And that's when we started doing
homeless shelters and prisons -
14:57 - 15:01and making laughter commonplace
in non-common places. -
15:01 - 15:04So now, as a result of doing that,
-
15:06 - 15:08we went to this one place,
we went to Montrose, Colorado. -
15:09 - 15:13It's an abuse facility for children
who were being abused by their parents. -
15:13 - 15:15And I'm hearing all these stories,
-
15:15 - 15:17and this grandmother told us
about her grandson -
15:17 - 15:20who was so afraid of his mom
who's on drugs and been abusing him. -
15:20 - 15:23One of the things she's been doing
is she was pulling out his toenails. -
15:23 - 15:25So I hear this story,
-
15:25 - 15:27and they bring all these kids inside.
-
15:27 - 15:29And Spiderman is sitting right up.
-
15:29 - 15:31This little boy is so afraid of his mom,
-
15:31 - 15:33everywhere he goes,
he wears a Spiderman costume. -
15:33 - 15:35He's sitting right up front at the show.
-
15:35 - 15:38If my mindset was still
to get laughs from people, -
15:38 - 15:41there's no way I would've been able
to do the show. -
15:41 - 15:43But my mindset changed;
-
15:43 - 15:46so now, I have to do the show.
-
15:46 - 15:47So I get up on stage,
-
15:47 - 15:50and people start laughing
slowly but surely. -
15:50 - 15:53Twenty minutes in it,
I hear a voice come from right here, -
15:53 - 15:55and the voice says, "My name is Ronan.”
-
15:55 - 15:57And this little boy pulls off his mask,
-
15:57 - 15:59introduces himself to me.
-
15:59 - 16:02And I can't even tell you
what it meant to me. -
16:02 - 16:04He started talking to me
for like nine minutes, -
16:04 - 16:06like I wasn't doing
a comedy show at the time. -
16:06 - 16:08(Laughter)
-
16:08 - 16:10But it was all because I made this shift.
-
16:11 - 16:13I made this change,
-
16:13 - 16:14and I say it simply.
-
16:14 - 16:15Instead of trying to get,
-
16:15 - 16:17I'm going to see if there's
an opportunity to give. -
16:17 - 16:19If you can make this adjustment,
-
16:19 - 16:21it will change your life for the good.
-
16:21 - 16:22If you're a mechanic,
-
16:22 - 16:24you may think
you get paid to fix vehicles. -
16:24 - 16:26But if you can make this shift,
-
16:26 - 16:29you will recognize you help people
reach their desired destination. -
16:29 - 16:32That will put your alarm clock
out of business. -
16:33 - 16:34My senses are
-
16:34 - 16:37there's a lot of people out there
still hitting the snooze button. -
16:37 - 16:39Before I bounce
-
16:39 - 16:41- bounce means to vacate the premises -
-
16:41 - 16:42(Laughter)
-
16:42 - 16:44I’d like to explain to you how life works,
-
16:45 - 16:47at least from a comedian’s perspective.
-
16:48 - 16:49First, there's a setup,
-
16:50 - 16:52and then there's a punchline.
-
16:52 - 16:55Your setup is your talents,
your resources, and your opportunities. -
16:55 - 16:57And most of the time, we use our setup
-
16:57 - 17:02to ensure that the people around us
are moving in a direction that serves us. -
17:02 - 17:04Which means the punchline occurs
-
17:04 - 17:07when you change that direction
in a way they're not expecting. -
17:07 - 17:10You actually use your setup
for other people. -
17:10 - 17:13The results are the same, yet multiply:
revelation, fulfillment, and joy. -
17:13 - 17:16But it's not just for the one
receiving your punch line; -
17:16 - 17:20it is absolutely for you
as you deliver the punch line. -
17:21 - 17:24In fact, if I ask the question
to everyone here, everyone watching, -
17:24 - 17:26if I ask you this question,
-
17:27 - 17:30"How many people here
know what your setup is?" -
17:30 - 17:32Every one of you would be able to tell me.
-
17:32 - 17:35Because your setup is the fact
that you have a house, a car, -
17:35 - 17:37you've been married, you went to school.
-
17:37 - 17:39Your setup is about what you've received.
-
17:39 - 17:43But what if I asked the question,
"What is your punchline?” -
17:44 - 17:48Because your punchline is about
what you’re called to deliver. -
17:48 - 17:51And if you only know your setup
and not your punchline, -
17:51 - 17:55you'll make the mistake
of trying to add more setup. -
17:55 - 17:57"If I could just get another degree,"
-
17:57 - 17:58"if I could just get married,"
-
17:58 - 18:00"if I could just lose weight,"
-
18:00 - 18:03but what you really need
is to know your punchline. -
18:05 - 18:07Because to know your setup
and not your punchline -
18:07 - 18:09is an uncomfortable place to live.
-
18:09 - 18:11Let me give you an example.
-
18:11 - 18:15How many people are still thinking about
the story of me and the CEO on stage? -
18:17 - 18:20The reason all you guys are
still thinking about that story -
18:20 - 18:22is because all you have is the setup;
-
18:23 - 18:25you don't have the punchline.
-
18:25 - 18:27Yet, we've moved on
-
18:27 - 18:30and allowed ourselves to be entertained
-
18:31 - 18:33like there wasn't something missing.
-
18:33 - 18:37So we'll go to a comedy show,
or a football game, or a concert -
18:37 - 18:40even though there's something missing.
-
18:40 - 18:43And that's just the story
I told you ten minutes ago. -
18:44 - 18:46What about your story?
-
18:46 - 18:50You've been living it your entire life,
and if all you know is the setup, -
18:50 - 18:51and not the punchline,
-
18:51 - 18:54you’re living in an uncomfortable place.
-
18:54 - 18:55And please be clear.
-
18:55 - 18:57Just like when I had
a hard time reading as a child, -
18:57 - 18:59your setbacks are part of your setup
-
18:59 - 19:02so you can deliver the punchline
you’re called to deliver. -
19:03 - 19:06Much like a slingshot,
the further you've been set back, -
19:06 - 19:09the further you're going to reach.
-
19:10 - 19:11But what are you going to aim for?
-
19:13 - 19:15Everyone has a setup,
-
19:16 - 19:17and everyone has a punchline.
-
19:18 - 19:20You need to find your punchline
-
19:21 - 19:22and deliver it.
-
19:22 - 19:23I'm Michael Jr.
-
19:23 - 19:24I love you.
-
19:24 - 19:26(Applause)
-
19:26 - 19:27Thank you guys.
-
19:27 - 19:28Aw, you guys are awesome.
-
19:28 - 19:29Standing ovation!
-
19:29 - 19:30Thank you so much.
-
19:30 - 19:31Thank you, thank you!
-
19:31 - 19:33(Applause)
-
19:33 - 19:35Get up, dude! You too!
-
19:35 - 19:36I'm just playing.
-
19:36 - 19:37Thank you.
-
19:37 - 19:38(Applause)

With comedy, you not only laugh but you also gain understanding in a unique way. Comedy has a setup and then a punchline. The setup moves the audience in one direction - toward what is expected. The punchline occurs when you change direction and take the audience to the unexpected. This same process can be applied to life. Comedian Michael Jr. shows how to take life's setups and then change direction in a way that brings fulfillment, revelation, and joy, not only to you but also to those around you.
Once in a generation, a comedian comes along who speaks to everyone. Today that comedian is known simply as Michael Jr. Watch him onstage, and you'll see a man at ease with himself, his audience, and his message. Listen to his voice, and you'll detect a comfortable, conversational style that hides a sly sense of mischief. Hear his words and you'll laugh at the universal themes that connect us all.
