Conveyor Belt Marble Lift - Marble Machine X #33

  • 0:00 - 0:05
welcome to another episode of intellect
  • 0:02 - 0:08
on Wednesdays and here it is business as
  • 0:05 - 0:10
usual as you can see I am trying out yet
  • 0:08 - 0:15
    another lifting mechanism it's a
  • 0:10 - 0:15
    comparable ratchet system combined
  • 0:16 - 0:24
that's basically the slow more rolling
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    [Music]
  • 0:40 - 0:44
in the last week's video I built a
  • 0:42 - 0:47
ratchet marble lifting system and in
  • 0:44 - 0:50
that video I said this instead I came up
  • 0:47 - 0:52
with this a ratchet lifting system this
  • 0:50 - 0:56
system really had the ability to lift
  • 0:52 - 0:58
eight marbles per crank turn that was
  • 0:56 - 1:00
all wrong that ratchet system and the
  • 0:58 - 1:02
way it's driven only lifts for marbles
  • 1:00 - 1:04
per crank turn and in this episode I'm
  • 1:02 - 1:06
going to replace it with something
  • 1:04 - 1:08
better than a mouthful to explain why we
  • 1:06 - 1:13
    need eight
  • 1:08 - 1:23
    [Music]
  • 1:13 - 1:25
I thought I start with explaining why we
  • 1:23 - 1:28
need to lift eight marbles per crank
  • 1:25 - 1:32
turn you remember this test music I made
  • 1:28 - 1:32
to explain the magnet MIDI music system
  • 1:33 - 1:43
just to repeat every click here is one
  • 1:39 - 1:44
crank turn turn turn turn turn right so
  • 1:43 - 1:49
if we have a busy pattern on the
  • 1:44 - 1:53
vibraphone like this you can already see
  • 1:49 - 1:56
that we have one two three four notes
  • 1:53 - 2:02
that means that we need four marbles per
  • 1:56 - 2:04
crank turn to only to play this but the
  • 2:02 - 2:06
more machine X has more instruments in
  • 2:04 - 2:18
the vibraphone so if we add a simple
  • 2:06 - 2:21
snare of be like that we're up to nine
  • 2:18 - 2:23
marbles per to crank turns if so and if
  • 2:21 - 2:32
we then continue add a simple kick drum
  • 2:23 - 2:46
    [Music]
  • 2:32 - 2:49
and then we add Hyatt on top of that you
  • 2:46 - 3:01
start to see here now seven marbles
  • 2:49 - 3:03
product seven six seven but this pattern
  • 3:01 - 3:22
is really simple if you make more
  • 3:03 - 3:24
complicated kick drum pattern you see
  • 3:22 - 3:26
we're already up to eight marbles per
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    factor
  • 3:33 - 3:48
so this is drums and bar before girls
  • 3:36 - 3:51
have to face so with a very busy
  • 3:48 - 3:53
    vibraphone pattern we exceed eight
  • 3:51 - 3:57
marbles per crank John here we have four
  • 3:53 - 4:00
seven and eleven marbles per crank turn
  • 3:57 - 4:02
so the marble machine would we'll be
  • 4:00 - 4:04
able to play this for some time because
  • 4:02 - 4:06
it has a lot of marbles stored upstairs
  • 4:04 - 4:09
but it won't be able to sustain it for
  • 4:06 - 4:11
five minutes when I make a really busy
  • 4:09 - 4:15
vibraphone pattern I need to keep the
  • 4:11 - 4:15
drum pattern a little bit less busy
  • 4:16 - 4:25
    [Music]
  • 4:27 - 4:37
    [Music]
  • 4:39 - 5:35
yes coffee what would we do without
  • 4:45 - 5:37
coffee so as you can see if we only had
  • 5:35 - 5:42
four marbles for a crank time we would
  • 5:37 - 5:51
only be able to play either only this or
  • 5:42 - 5:54
like only this or only this but if we
  • 5:51 - 5:56
can get eight marbles per crank turn we
  • 5:54 - 5:58
will be able to play almost something
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    like this
  • 6:01 - 6:08
so that's why it's so important okay
  • 6:05 - 6:10
let's do some prototyping to solve this
  • 6:08 - 6:12
problem I started with some spring
  • 6:10 - 6:16
cleaning on my workshop and I built a
  • 6:12 - 6:18
weld card slash Robo wars contestant the
  • 6:16 - 6:20
draw for a sardar thought was a little
  • 6:18 - 6:22
bit tough his meeting this old tony's
  • 6:20 - 6:24
welding art in round one so we'll see
  • 6:22 - 6:27
what i have to measure with this
  • 6:24 - 6:29
prototype is the time for the marbles
  • 6:27 - 6:32
needs going there because this will move
  • 6:29 - 6:32
    extremely fast
  • 6:39 - 6:44
    [Music]
  • 6:46 - 6:50
    [Music]
  • 6:52 - 7:01
    [Music]
  • 7:04 - 7:10
    [Music]
  • 7:13 - 7:19
so this is the improved prototype with
  • 7:16 - 7:21
some changes and see if we can get up to
  • 7:19 - 7:23
marble speed with that I have a slow-mo
  • 7:21 - 7:29
camera set up the only thing I need now
  • 7:23 - 7:37
is the marbles so let's go over here and
  • 7:29 - 7:41
look and of course the one box I need is
  • 7:37 - 7:45
guarded by a demon I love animal but
  • 7:41 - 7:47
these long leg things have to convince
  • 7:45 - 7:51
it that this is the wrong box to sit on
  • 7:47 - 7:58
hello my friend can I please take my
  • 7:51 - 7:58
marble whoa okay he went that good
  • 8:04 - 8:27
    [Music]
  • 8:24 - 8:47
    this one up
  • 8:27 - 8:47
    [Music]
  • 8:54 - 9:04
    17 divided on 25 0.68 four strokes
  • 9:00 - 9:07
divided on 0.68 seconds equals five
  • 9:04 - 9:13
point eight miles per second times 16
  • 9:07 - 9:18
this was 352 BPM actually that's a nice
  • 9:13 - 9:20
Headroom yay this proves that the
  • 9:18 - 9:23
marbles loads fast enough in this method
  • 9:20 - 9:25
for playing music up to 200 bpm
  • 9:23 - 9:28
and in the prototype I'm using one row
  • 9:25 - 9:31
of marbles but in the real version we
  • 9:28 - 9:34
have eight marbles so now I need a way
  • 9:31 - 9:37
to divide all the marbles onto eight so
  • 9:34 - 9:39
if you remember week added a divided by
  • 9:37 - 9:41
eight swing to be asked me the branch
  • 9:39 - 9:44
from Gothenburg has sent me in the first
  • 9:41 - 9:47
3d print of that one and Here I am
  • 9:44 - 9:51
adjusting the weight not on the backside
  • 9:47 - 9:54
to really make the swing tip exactly
  • 9:51 - 9:57
when it has eight marbles on it I tapped
  • 9:54 - 10:00
and made hole in the plastic and I used
  • 9:57 - 10:02
this lock nut to lock both in to place
  • 10:00 - 10:05
and this really worked well you can
  • 10:02 - 10:08
adjust this with very high precision to
  • 10:05 - 10:10
fall exactly when when I wanted to fall
  • 10:08 - 10:13
but I realized that this swing is too
  • 10:10 - 10:15
slow because the conveyor belt can lift
  • 10:13 - 10:17
eight eight eight eight eight eight
  • 10:15 - 10:21
eight marbles fast like that and the
  • 10:17 - 10:24
swing can't handle that high marble
  • 10:21 - 10:27
pressure so I needed another way to
  • 10:24 - 10:29
divide by eight so I've been toting
  • 10:27 - 10:31
another system I've been trying this
  • 10:29 - 10:36
I've been trying duck when I come up
  • 10:31 - 10:38
with is this to divide one single roll
  • 10:36 - 10:40
onto eight just before the conveyor
  • 10:38 - 10:48
    about
  • 10:40 - 10:54
this seems to be very reliable so if I
  • 10:48 - 10:56
know these marvels the marbles come into
  • 10:54 - 10:59
the ring gear from the planetary gearset
  • 10:56 - 11:03
the blue line there and they come in
  • 10:59 - 11:06
this new exit thing here that has quite
  • 11:03 - 11:09
complicated geometry but I think this
  • 11:06 - 11:12
will work great it attaches to the
  • 11:09 - 11:16
mainframe here as you can see I added
  • 11:12 - 11:18
some texts this 3d printed part here
  • 11:16 - 11:24
    just for fun
  • 11:18 - 11:27
the marbles come in this thing they get
  • 11:24 - 11:30
split up onto the four channels like I
  • 11:27 - 11:32
talked about last week over the big
  • 11:30 - 11:36
demagnetizing wheel the magnets are not
  • 11:32 - 11:38
gonna be colored it's just for symbolism
  • 11:36 - 11:40
the marbles done I'm not really done
  • 11:38 - 11:43
with this is it sketches the marbles
  • 11:40 - 11:47
done gets collected into one row by this
  • 11:43 - 11:50
loft command I used to create this shape
  • 11:47 - 11:52
here and then they go into this and this
  • 11:50 - 11:54
is one of the most complicated things
  • 11:52 - 11:57
that I've ever carried because the
  • 11:54 - 12:02
geometries on these eight slopes are all
  • 11:57 - 12:05
individual so they have 5 degrees slope
  • 12:02 - 12:07
seen from this direction but they also
  • 12:05 - 12:10
have a 5 degree slope seen from this
  • 12:07 - 12:12
    direction they're all individual from
  • 12:10 - 12:15
the start and need to end up at the same
  • 12:12 - 12:18
spot in the end so that was a little bit
  • 12:15 - 12:20
complicated this works exactly like the
  • 12:18 - 12:23
marble divider the channels that are
  • 12:20 - 12:26
full we'll skip the marbles and the
  • 12:23 - 12:30
models will roll into the empty channels
  • 12:26 - 12:33
and then they will be lifted up by this
  • 12:30 - 12:38
the conveyor belt system and the cool
  • 12:33 - 12:41
thing is so I found this inspiration
  • 12:38 - 12:44
from a YouTube video for like some kind
  • 12:41 - 12:47
    of industrial solutions for nuclear
  • 12:44 - 12:51
plants and recycling stations where the
  • 12:47 - 12:54
uses chain links and was actually seeing
  • 12:51 - 12:56
that video that got me into understand
  • 12:54 - 12:59
how I can build a marble conveyor belt
  • 12:56 - 13:05
that is efficient and looks good
  • 12:59 - 13:09
so each chute that holds the marbles has
  • 13:05 - 13:12
a gear tooth shape so up here they turn
  • 13:09 - 13:14
into a gear drive and the chain links is
  • 13:12 - 13:19
    also fitting in here
  • 13:14 - 13:21
between the gear as you can see here and
  • 13:19 - 13:24
the cool thing is that this conveyor
  • 13:21 - 13:27
belt is not driven by these gears it's
  • 13:24 - 13:30
not driven by a rotating mechanism this
  • 13:27 - 13:32
conveyor belt is driven by the two
  • 13:30 - 13:37
Pistons these two Pistons will move up
  • 13:32 - 13:38
and down with 40 millimeters travel so
  • 13:37 - 13:41
just just you can see here the right
  • 13:38 - 13:45
piston here is connected to half of the
  • 13:41 - 13:48
fish stair steps and the left piston is
  • 13:45 - 13:52
connected to the other half and I also
  • 13:48 - 13:55
    implemented spring tension mechanism
  • 13:52 - 13:59
here to help the Pistons fight gravity a
  • 13:55 - 14:01
little bit and on this side we're going
  • 13:59 - 14:03
to have ratchets they are not sketched
  • 14:01 - 14:06
in this design yet but they are coming
  • 14:03 - 14:09
out to the left side here and they will
  • 14:06 - 14:11
go inside this conveyor belt here and
  • 14:09 - 14:14
the ratchet will lift the tooth
  • 14:11 - 14:17
    themselves every chute will
  • 14:14 - 14:19
    what-what-what-what so there's there are
  • 14:17 - 14:21
several things that is very very good
  • 14:19 - 14:23
with this design we're losing very
  • 14:21 - 14:26
little height if we look at it straight
  • 14:23 - 14:28
from the side like this let me put on
  • 14:26 - 14:30
    orthographic and another perspective and
  • 14:28 - 14:34
then we have a really flat view like
  • 14:30 - 14:36
this so you can see that this is the top
  • 14:34 - 14:38
of the marbles and down here where they
  • 14:36 - 14:40
picked up is just five centimeters or
  • 14:38 - 14:42
something and then we done a lot with
  • 14:40 - 14:45
    five centimeter fall height we
  • 14:42 - 14:48
demagnetize the marbles and we routed
  • 14:45 - 14:49
them around and back and if we look from
  • 14:48 - 14:51
    the front of the machine
  • 14:49 - 14:55
    [Music]
  • 14:51 - 14:58
we are actually not going out that far
  • 14:55 - 15:01
to the left with this design this
  • 14:58 - 15:03
conveyor belt reminds me of this snake
  • 15:01 - 15:05
rattle and roll game which I loved when
  • 15:03 - 15:08
you climb the waterfall you know in the
  • 15:05 - 15:10
    like world seven super-difficult the
  • 15:08 - 15:14
marbles are like climbing the snake
  • 15:10 - 15:16
rattle and roll system so when these
  • 15:14 - 15:20
marble shuttles reaches the top it will
  • 15:16 - 15:22
tip over then the marbles will then roll
  • 15:20 - 15:25
on the backside on the chute that was
  • 15:22 - 15:28
before them if you see the structure
  • 15:25 - 15:31
here is that the marbles will start to
  • 15:28 - 15:34
roll on this surface so to speak it's
  • 15:31 - 15:36
right under the marbles on this one so
  • 15:34 - 15:39
they will roll on the swing that was
  • 15:36 - 15:43
before them and roll off into some
  • 15:39 - 15:47
tracks that I did not design yet so so
  • 15:43 - 15:49
that's the idea right now I think this
  • 15:47 - 15:53
is very viable because I've done a lot
  • 15:49 - 15:55
of prototyping to get to this point so
  • 15:53 - 15:57
when I built the first machine I only
  • 15:55 - 15:59
made videos when I was done with parts
  • 15:57 - 16:01
and I was regretting off towards that I
  • 15:59 - 16:04
didn't show all mistakes and all the
  • 16:01 - 16:06
change designs and stuff and the way I'm
  • 16:04 - 16:09
making the videos now update every week
  • 16:06 - 16:12
you really get to follow how I go into
  • 16:09 - 16:15
the dance and how I try to dig myself
  • 16:12 - 16:17
out of them thanks so much for watching
  • 16:15 - 16:18
I'm editing these videos nowadays a
  • 16:17 - 16:22
    little bit with shoot-from-the-hip
  • 16:18 - 16:24
attitude I hope you like it I hope
  • 16:22 - 16:26
they're some kind of creation have a
  • 16:24 - 16:27
great day everyone and see you on the
  • 16:26 - 16:32
next main - got that Wednesday
  • 16:27 - 16:32
    [Music]
