An Unhinged James Charles Deepdive

  • 0:02 - 0:05
James Charles, a name so chilling
  • 0:05 - 0:07
that it requires a trigger warning.
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    Trigger warning: James Charles.
  • 0:08 - 0:11
You can say a lot of things about
    James Charles.
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    Most of them are bad.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    Like, really bad.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
But objectively, he is one of the most
    well-known
  • 0:17 - 0:20
influencers from the last 10 years.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
And because of how much exposure
  • 0:22 - 0:26
    and business success he saw
    over the years,
  • 0:26 - 0:31
James Charles is truly somebody who
    could have had it all
  • 0:31 - 0:34
if only he wasn't a piece of shit.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
If you're watching this video, odds are
    you've heard of James,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
or you've at least heard of his infamy.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
You may have had the petrifying
    experience
  • 0:45 - 0:47
of seeing his BBL or hearing him say
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    "Hi sisters!"
  • 0:49 - 0:53
This guy's digital footprint has some of the
    funniest
  • 0:53 - 0:56
and grossest shit I have ever seen.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
Because as we'll get into, he is a massive
    creepo, freako,
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    womp womp.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    It is quite a tale.
  • 1:04 - 1:09
So allow me to take you on an Unhinged
    James Charles Deepdive.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    James Charles (or James Charles
    Dickinson)
  • 1:13 - 1:28
was born on May 23rd, 1999 in Bethlehem,
    New York.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
And he is Emily Dickinson's third cousin
    twice removed -
  • 1:32 - 1:34
ignore that, it was a lie, I just lied.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
In 2010, at the age of 11, he started his
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    very first YouTube channel called
    JaysCoding.
  • 1:40 - 1:45
This channel mostly consisted of him
    covering songs like
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    "Pumped Up Kicks".
  • 1:46 - 1:50
♫ "You better run, better run
    faster than my bullet." ♫
  • 1:50 - 1:52
"Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    ♫ "Carved my name
    into his leather seats." ♫
  • 1:56 - 1:59
But most notably, this "It Will Rain" cover
  • 1:59 - 2:01
where he's wearing this wolf hat.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    ♫ "- morphine at my door." ♫
  • 2:03 - 2:06
And although these childhood videos are
    wholesome,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    this would be the start
    of a very troubling
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    pattern of him
    singing unprompted.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    Although my personal favorite video
    that I found on JaysCoding
  • 2:14 - 2:21
was this six-second upload of just
    a image of an eye.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    Like, bro really uploaded an
    image to YouTube,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
and that is so of the time.
  • 2:27 - 2:31
But in 2015, he would launch his second
    and main channel
  • 2:31 - 2:34
that we know today as James Charles.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
And this is where he started uploading
    makeup tutorials, such as
  • 2:37 - 2:43
    serpent makeup tutorial and
    Snapchat Galaxy makeup tutorial.
  • 2:43 - 2:48
And as you can see, none of these look
    particularly good.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    In fact, they're pretty bad,
    but I assure you
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    everyone's makeup looked
    really bad in 2015,
  • 2:55 - 2:58
so that really means nothing I guess.
  • 2:58 - 3:02
But he was gaining a really decent
    audience from posting these tutorials.
  • 3:02 - 3:07
    But the inciting incident, the
    catalyst that would launch
  • 3:07 - 3:12
    James Charles' career, happened in
    September of 2016.
  • 3:12 - 3:18
And this moment would have irreversible
repercussions on society and the Internet.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
James was 17 years old at this point,
  • 3:21 - 3:24
and he had just taken his senior photos,
  • 3:24 - 3:27
which came out fugly according to him.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
And so he hired the school
    photographer to come back
  • 3:30 - 3:34
and let him retake the pictures
    with his ring light.
  • 3:34 - 3:38
And as you can see here, his highlight is
    definitely going off,
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    his brows have a good
    Roblox look to them.
  • 3:41 - 3:45
However, where I draw the line is
    that man bun.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    What the f**k?
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    Anyways, his friend convinces
    him to post these
  • 3:49 - 3:55
    new glamorous pictures online
    and they go extremely viral.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    Like, this picture of James
    was being shared
  • 3:58 - 4:02
so much that CoverGirl noticed it.
  • 4:02 - 4:06
And that is how he became the world's
    first male CoverGirl.
  • 4:06 - 4:12
Now because this was 2016, it stirred
    controversy amongst conservatives.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
And, you know, of course it did
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    because it's CoverGirl, not "CoverDong".
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    Seriously, though, I found this
    old Twitter thread
  • 4:20 - 4:24
where people are just bitching about this
    like there's no tomorrow.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
A great example is this one:
  • 4:26 - 4:37
    reads tweet.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    There's also this one where
    a woman compares
  • 4:39 - 4:44
James being on CoverGirl to a white
    person doing blackface.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    Um... Nurse, she's out again!
  • 4:47 - 4:51
Anyways, outisde of these randos making
    a stink out of it,
  • 4:51 - 4:53
this opened up a lot of opportunities
  • 4:53 - 4:54
    for James.
  • 4:54 - 4:58
I mean, he went on Ellen, I guess that's not
    that impressive, though.
  • 4:58 - 5:03
As I mentioned in the Jojo Siwa video, you
could literally fart into a bucket
  • 5:03 - 5:06
and somehow make it on Ellen at this
    point in time.
  • 5:06 - 5:09
And as his fame was escalating,
  • 5:09 - 5:12
he did his first-ever fan meet.
  • 5:12 - 5:15
Only 50 people showed up to this event,
  • 5:15 - 5:17
and one of the videos that was taken there
  • 5:17 - 5:19
was turned into a meme because at
  • 5:19 - 5:25
some point James just sat down on the
    ground and started singing.
  • 5:25 - 5:33
♫ Bring me a little water now!
    Bring me little water, Sylvie!♫
  • 5:33 - 5:37
I don't know what my favorite part about
this meme is. It might be
  • 5:37 - 5:40
the Snapchat caption that says "f**k it up"
  • 5:40 - 5:44
which insinuates that he's doing a good
    job singing right now.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
Or it could be the fact that he raises
  • 5:46 - 5:49
his finger up as if he's hitting those
    high notes.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
This was, of course, the very first time
  • 5:51 - 5:53
that he was turned into a meme,
  • 5:53 - 5:56
but it's certainly would not be the last.
  • 5:56 - 6:01
This same year, James did a CoverGirl
    promotion with Zendaya,
  • 6:01 - 6:08
and oh my God, this has gotta be
  • 6:08 - 6:12
one of the most unintentionally funny
    videos I've ever seen.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
So this video that they're doing is a
    challenge to see what makeup
  • 6:14 - 6:17
looks they could come up with in the
    span of 5 minutes.
  • 6:17 - 6:21
And so they're both in a rush and trying to
    showcase these CoverGirl
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    products along the way.
  • 6:22 - 6:28
And about 30 seconds in, James gets
    befuddled and just starts
  • 6:28 - 6:30
copying Zendaya and then acts like
  • 6:30 - 6:33
everything he's doing was his idea.
  • 6:33 - 6:36
    - "I used it on my inner corner."
    - "Same."
  • 6:36 - 6:36
    (Huh??)
  • 6:36 - 6:39
    - "I used this as a base for the blue."
    - "Yeah, same."
  • 6:39 - 6:42
And not only this, the end result is so bad,
  • 6:42 - 6:45
she absolutely ate him up, I can't believe
    this video exists.
  • 6:45 - 6:48
These two people should not exist in the
    same universe.
  • 6:48 - 6:52
James would soon also start doing collabs
  • 6:52 - 6:56
with massive YouTubers like Tana Mongeau,
    Joey Graceffa, and even
  • 6:56 - 6:59
    non-YouTubers like Maddie Ziegler.
  • 6:59 - 7:01
However, he would soon find himself in his
  • 7:01 - 7:07
very first controversy, and that is the
    "Ebola" tweet.
  • 7:07 - 7:10
On Febuary 16, 2017, James writes:
  • 7:10 - 7:23
    reads tweet.
  • 7:23 - 7:24
So obviously this is very out of touch
  • 7:24 - 7:28
and just kind of assumes that Africa is like
    a diseased-riddled area,
  • 7:28 - 7:31
and so people were not happy about this.
  • 7:31 - 7:36
And so the very same day he did his first
    public apology ever.
  • 7:36 - 7:37
    He wrote:
  • 7:37 - 7:44
    reads tweet.
  • 7:44 - 7:49
And people definitely still thought James
was racist for, like, a good month
  • 7:49 - 7:50
    after this.
  • 7:50 - 7:53
    But the discourse got completely
    overshadowed by the events of
  • 7:53 - 8:00
March 5th, 2017, which was the birth of
    Flashback Mary.
  • 8:00 - 8:06
    So what happened was that
    James was at an event
  • 8:06 - 8:11
and he had WAY too much
    powder on his face,
  • 8:11 - 8:15
and so when they took this picture of him,
it caused a flashback that gave him this,
  • 8:15 - 8:19
    like, ghostly, ghoulish, sinister
    SCP look to him.
  • 8:19 - 8:23
    And the internet was immediately
    obsessed with this.
  • 8:23 - 8:30
Like, this is definitely one of the biggest
memes that has hit the Internet.
  • 8:30 - 8:31
Ask anyone, ask your grandma, ask your
local pastor, they know Flashback Mary.
  • 8:31 - 8:35
The main comparison that was being made
to James was of this spider from-
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    what is this show called?
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    It's called Miss Spider's
    Sunny Patch Friends.
  • 8:39 - 8:44
Like, I can't express to you how many times
I've seen this image against my will,
  • 8:44 - 8:47
I wish I could permaban it from my brain.
  • 8:47 - 8:52
Something a little disappointing about this
    meme, though, is that the
  • 8:52 - 8:55
    widespread image of Flashback
Mary is not the real one.
  • 8:55 - 9:00
This is the real one, and I will say, the
    flashback is still really bad,
  • 9:00 - 9:04
    but whoever edited this picture
just made it 70 times worse.
  • 9:04 - 9:09
An interesting artifact of the time that I
    found was this Redbubble page
  • 9:09 - 9:16
that just exclusively sells Flashback Mary
furniture, such as clocks and pillows.
  • 9:16 - 9:20
    I really don't understand Redbubble,
    people will just sell
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    tych-fck-ehchk-ANYTHING there.
  • 9:22 - 9:27
    Anyways, though, speaking of James
    Charles' foundation, he does not
  • 9:27 - 9:29
know how to match that shit.
  • 9:29 - 9:33
    Like, there's entire compilations
    of him doing just that.
  • 9:33 - 9:37
And in this video specifically, he
    describes himself as having
  • 9:37 - 9:40
    warm undertones.
  • 9:40 - 9:41
"GASP. That looks like it could be
such a good match for me,
  • 9:41 - 9:44
everyone is convinced that my skintone
    is, like, not warm."
  • 9:44 - 9:47
Girl, you are PINK! You are PINK!
  • 9:47 - 9:50
I think the funniest part about all
of this, though, is that he
  • 9:50 - 9:55
literally has a YouTube video trying, like,
    40 different foundation shades, and
  • 9:55 - 9:59
in the end he still chooses the wrong one.
  • 9:59 - 10:04
Side note, though, another James Charles-ism
    is that he chronically misuses
  • 10:04 - 10:08
    Facetune, especially in this era.
  • 10:08 - 10:14
And to be fair, he's never hid that he
uses Facetune, but it just looks so bad
  • 10:14 - 10:20
that I don't understand why he continues
to do it. Like, when I see these pictures,
  • 10:20 - 10:26
    I get uncanny valley, Russian
    Sleep Experiment, creepypasta vibes.
  • 10:26 - 10:31
Moving on, though, we have the "It"
    debacle of 2017.
  • 10:31 - 10:38
Now, the It debacle began on September
    7th when James tweeted about
  • 10:38 - 10:41
how he was gonna go see It, and
how excited he was about it.
  • 10:41 - 10:45
But literally five minutes into the movie,
he started tweeting about how bad
  • 10:45 - 10:48
it was, which, of course, is just nutty
  • 10:48 - 10:50
    because how have you already
    decided that
  • 10:50 - 10:53
you don't like the movie, and it's only
    been five minutes?
  • 10:53 - 10:56
And, like, why are you even on your phone?
  • 10:56 - 10:59
    About thirty minutes later,
    James tweets again,
  • 10:59 - 11:01
    and this time, he says:
  • 11:01 - 11:11
    reading tweet.
  • 11:11 - 11:15
Both of these tweets annoyed people for
    obvious reasons.
  • 11:15 - 11:19
Like, he's just been texting the entire
    movie.
  • 11:19 - 11:23
It doesn't even sound like he's been
watching it to know if it's bad!
  • 11:23 - 11:27
And so in response to all the people
    questioning why he's doing this,
  • 11:27 - 11:28
    he writes:
  • 11:28 - 11:36
    reads tweet.
  • 11:36 - 11:38
    But then,
  • 11:38 - 11:41
Finn Wolfhard replies to one of these
    tweets and says:
  • 11:41 - 11:45
    reads tweet
  • 11:45 - 11:50
Granted, at this time, I think Finn was
    12 or 13 maybe.
  • 11:50 - 11:51
    And so James tweets:
  • 11:51 - 11:55
    reads tweet.
  • 11:55 - 11:59
Which sounds like he's accepting the
    end of this.
  • 11:59 - 12:03
Like, this should be the end of the
    conversation.
  • 12:03 - 12:08
But instead, he starts backtracking times
    3,000, and he says:
  • 12:08 - 12:16
    reads tweet.
  • 12:16 - 12:20
For the next few hours, people on
Twitter would not leave him alone
  • 12:20 - 12:22
about why he was texting in the
    movie theater.
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    And so he eventually says:
  • 12:24 - 12:31
    reads tweet.
  • 12:31 - 12:34
And this dug his grave in even more.
  • 12:34 - 12:38
Because people were like, "What do you
    mean 'everyone does it,'
  • 12:38 - 12:40
like, everyone does not do that!"
  • 12:40 - 12:46
Personally, as an AMC Stubs member,
    this pains me.
  • 12:46 - 12:48
Follow me on Letterboxd so I can
    feel important.
  • 12:48 - 12:53
But this caused people to start doing
polls about whether or not people
  • 12:53 - 12:56
    actually texted people during movies.
  • 12:56 - 13:01
And the results were, of course,
    overwhelmingly NO.
  • 13:01 - 13:02
    No they do not!
  • 13:02 - 13:06
And again, this should've been the end of
the conversation, but he just keeps
  • 13:06 - 13:12
acknowledging it, and he ends up filming
an apology video in the backseat
  • 13:12 - 13:13
    of an Uber.
  • 13:13 - 13:15
(James talking:) "I want to personally
apologize to Finn and anybody else
  • 13:15 - 13:17
involved in the making of the movie It."
  • 13:17 - 13:22
And regardless of all of this, a couple
days later, he ended up doing an
  • 13:22 - 13:23
    It makeup tutorial.
  • 13:23 - 13:26
    (James doing a Pennywise voice:)
    "Hiya, sisters! James Charles
  • 13:26 - 13:27
here, and welcome back to my
    YouTube channel!"
  • 13:27 - 13:31
Which, by the way, the first six
    seconds of this video
  • 13:31 - 13:35
changed my life for the worse, so I'm
gonna make you see this too.
  • 13:35 - 13:38
    (dubstep, intense music)
  • 13:38 - 13:39
    (scream sound effect)
  • 13:39 - 13:41
In 2018, the "Sister Squad formed
  • 13:41 - 13:44
And this was basically just of long
  • 13:44 - 13:47
squad of these four best friends that
  • 13:47 - 13:50
consisted of... I mentioned Ethan Dolan,
  • 13:50 - 13:52
    Grayson Dolan, and of course
  • 13:52 - 13:56
James himself. Now Eathan Dolan / Grayson
  • 13:56 - 13:59
had a huge Youtube channel that they
  • 13:59 - 14:03
have been making videos on since 2014
  • 14:03 - 14:04
And James ended up meeting them in late
  • 14:04 - 14:08
2017 after he left he left a bunch of very
  • 14:08 - 14:10
Questionably, thirsty Tweets on both of
  • 14:10 - 14:12
    Their Instagrams. These includes comments
  • 14:12 - 14:16
Such as "Run me over with that
  • 14:16 - 14:17
Motorcycle, daddy". "Choke me with that
  • 14:17 - 14:20
    Seatbelt, daddy".
  • 14:20 - 14:22
And last but not least, " Hit me with that
  • 14:22 - 14:23
    Stick, daddy".
  • 14:23 - 14:26
On June 9, 2018, the first ever "Sister
  • 14:26 - 14:29
Squad" video was posted and this
  • 14:29 - 14:32
Had a cultural impact like no other
  • 14:32 - 14:34
Squad at the time. I don't care what
  • 14:34 - 14:36
Anyone says. This is the truth.
  • 14:36 - 14:38
The "Sister Squad" was such an
  • 14:38 - 14:41
Immediate success and all their videos
  • 14:41 - 14:44
Were pretty much just them hanging out.
  • 14:44 - 14:46
Each one of the "Sister Squad" videos got
  • 14:46 - 14:49
Around 30 million views a piece.
  • 14:49 - 14:52
And so, they say that people were
  • 14:52 - 14:54
    invested.
  • 14:57 - 15:01
    In this friend's group dynamic
  • 15:01 - 15:02
    'It would be an understatement.
  • 15:02 - 15:07
The most notable dynamics was that of.
  • 15:07 - 15:07
Emma and Grayson because it was heavily
  • 15:07 - 15:09
theorized that they secretly dating while
  • 15:09 - 15:11
    fans were constantly speculating them.,
  • 15:11 - 15:13
    making entire compilations of their
  • 15:13 - 15:17
    interactions. And secondly was the
  • 15:17 - 15:19
    dynamic between James and Grayson.
  • 15:19 - 15:21
It was pretty much an open secret that
  • 15:21 - 15:23
James had a crush on Grayson and there's
  • 15:23 - 15:27
    entire compilations of him unsuccessfully
  • 15:27 - 15:30
    flirting with him. And there's
  • 15:30 - 15:34
definitely some of the incidents were
  • 15:34 - 15:35
preplanned as a joke, but there's
  • 15:35 - 15:37
also many that were pretty much very raw.
  • 15:37 - 15:41
Very real like you can feel the rejection
  • 15:41 - 15:42
    in the air like groaning
  • 15:42 - 15:45
this is very important to remember when
  • 15:45 - 15:48
we get to bisister, so just keep this is
  • 15:48 - 15:52
in mind that this group being able to
  • 15:52 - 15:54
make millions and millions of views per
  • 15:54 - 15:56
video and despite the way they seem so
  • 15:56 - 15:58
close in these videos. These two things
  • 15:58 - 16:01
have appeared to cause some turmoil
  • 16:01 - 16:04
because by February 4th, 2019, Emma
  • 16:04 - 16:08
unfollowed all of them and to be fair,
  • 16:08 - 16:11
she did unfollow everyone but like six
  • 16:11 - 16:13
people and posted on her story that she
  • 16:13 - 16:17
had done that for a social media purge.
  • 16:17 - 16:19
But to be honest, it doesn't really make
  • 16:19 - 16:21
sense because if you are doing a social
  • 16:21 - 16:25
media purge I think you still follow your
  • 16:25 - 16:27
closest friends and just not anyone else.
  • 16:27 - 16:30
So it kinda seemed like a convenient, uh,
  • 16:30 - 16:33
excuse. And James Charles's response to
  • 16:33 - 16:36
this was this tweet, "I posted a beautiful
  • 16:36 - 16:39
makeup look today but you wouldn't know"
  • 16:39 - 16:41
In November of 2018, James released his
  • 16:41 - 16:44
first ever makeup pallet. And this, of
  • 16:44 - 16:46
course, was James X Morphe. Now, let me
  • 16:46 - 16:50
tell you, this pallet was extremely
  • 16:50 - 16:53
popular at the time. Everyone that I
  • 16:53 - 16:56
knew had this, I had this, and it was just
  • 16:56 - 16:59
generally really well recieved. So this
  • 16:59 - 17:02
    new level of entrepreneurship really
  • 17:02 - 17:06
brought him up a threshold of passionate
  • 17:06 - 17:08
passionate fans. Like he did an appearance
  • 17:08 - 17:11
at a Morphe store in Birmingham and
  • 17:11 - 17:16
8,000 people showed up to the mall to see
  • 17:16 - 17:19
him and it literally caused gridlock
  • 17:19 - 17:21
outside of the store, like people were
  • 17:21 - 17:24
trapped in their cars. That is how
  • 17:24 - 17:28
popular he was at the time. However, it
  • 17:28 - 17:31
wouldn't be long until James found himself
  • 17:31 - 17:35
in another controversy. Also, oh my god, I
  • 17:35 - 17:37
almost forgot to mention that he was
  • 17:37 - 17:40
singing unprompted in front of this Morphe
  • 17:40 - 17:41
    as well.
  • 17:41 - 17:44
    singing
  • 17:44 - 17:48
The 2019 Sisters Tour. So James was doing
  • 17:48 - 17:51
a tour across the country and the most
  • 17:51 - 17:54
expensive ticket that you could buy to see
  • 17:54 - 17:58
him was $500. Which, a lot of people
  • 17:58 - 18:01
were quick to call a scam. And he received
  • 18:01 - 18:04
a ton of backlash for this. Personally, I
  • 18:04 - 18:06
don't think this was a scam because you
  • 18:06 - 18:08
were going to get what you paid for. Like,
  • 18:08 - 18:10
it says right here what's included with
  • 18:10 - 18:13
this. It says, "Exclusive hangout with
  • 18:13 - 18:16
James Charles and the other Sister VIPS.
  • 18:16 - 18:19
One on one photo with James Charles.
  • 18:19 - 18:22
Exclusive Sisters VIP goodie bag. And
  • 18:22 - 18:25
    exclusive autograph tour laminate. Front
  • 18:25 - 18:28
row seats and early access to merchandise
  • 18:28 - 18:31
vendors". Okay, that last one is crazy.
  • 18:31 - 18:34
Like, if your spending $500, I think you
  • 18:34 - 18:36
should get some free merch. In no way do I
  • 18:36 - 18:39
feel like this is worth $500 and like, in
  • 18:39 - 18:41
my perspective, I would feel like an
  • 18:41 - 18:44
asshole to hide a meet and greet with me
  • 18:44 - 18:48
behind a $500 paywall. However, if you
  • 18:48 - 18:50
really wanted to have all that stuff and
  • 18:50 - 18:54
spend $500, that is your business. James
  • 18:54 - 18:56
did say that he would try to talk to his
  • 18:56 - 18:59
team about lowering the prices, but they
  • 18:59 - 19:01
did remain the same. And in case your
  • 19:01 - 19:06
wondering what the luxury VIP James
  • 19:06 - 19:10
Charles experience was like, there's a
  • 19:10 - 19:12
video on YouTube titled, "I PAID $500
  • 19:12 - 19:13
TO SING WITH JAMES CHARLES" and it's him
  • 19:13 - 19:16
surrounded by a huge group of girls
  • 19:16 - 19:20
singing Listen by Beyonce very poorly.
  • 19:20 - 19:26
    singing
  • 19:26 - 19:29
A genuine perk I see for anyone who went
  • 19:29 - 19:31
on this tour though, was that they got to
  • 19:31 - 19:35
witness the New Rules kick. In real time.
  • 19:35 - 19:38
    video plays
  • 19:38 - 19:40
This became a meme just purely out of
  • 19:40 - 19:44
being the perfect storm. People just found
  • 19:44 - 19:46
out that some tickets to the tour cost
  • 19:46 - 19:50
$500 and then they see this. Poor
  • 19:50 - 19:53
singing and poor dancing. And that third
  • 19:53 - 19:56
    miscellaneous kick, muah.
  • 19:56 - 19:58
Let's take a break to talk about something
  • 19:58 - 20:02
    that definitely isn't overpriced. Today's
  • 20:02 - 20:05
video is sponsored by care/of. You guys,
  • 20:05 - 20:07
I'm so excited that care/of decided to
  • 20:07 - 20:10
partner with me again because I genuinely
  • 20:10 - 20:13
love my vitamin packs. Like, care/of has
  • 20:13 - 20:15
truly made remembering to take your
  • 20:15 - 20:18
    vitamins and incorporating them into
  • 20:18 - 20:21
your wellness routines so convenient. And
  • 20:21 - 20:23
all I had to do to get the vitamins that
  • 20:23 - 20:25
were right for me, was take this little
  • 20:25 - 20:28
online quiz and it basically asks you
  • 20:28 - 20:34
questions about your lifestyle, and about
  • 20:34 - 20:36
your health goals. Then boom. care/of
  • 20:36 - 20:37
    sends you doctor back recommendations
  • 20:37 - 20:40
right to your door in compostable packets.
  • 20:40 - 20:43
So! When I took my quiz, I said that I was
  • 20:43 - 20:45
concerned about my skin health, my eye
  • 20:45 - 20:48
health, and also that I wanted to improve
  • 20:48 - 20:51
my focus. And they ended up recommending
  • 20:51 - 20:53
me Astaxanthin, that's good for your eye
  • 20:53 - 20:56
and skin health. Then I got some Ceramides
  • 20:56 - 21:00
which is of course also good for your
  • 21:00 - 21:01
skin health. I got some Rhodiola which is
  • 21:01 - 21:04
for stress and focus. And honestly I could
  • 21:04 - 21:07
really rave all day about all of these,
  • 21:07 - 21:09
because since I've started taking these,
  • 21:09 - 21:11
I'm hooked and I've never been more
  • 21:11 - 21:14
satisfied with my skin, my hair, and my
  • 21:14 - 21:17
focus. Like, I feel like I'm genuinely
  • 21:17 - 21:21
    getting good results.
  • 21:21 - 21:22
Care/of also has these wonderful powders
  • 21:22 - 21:24
that I love. I love their Collagen,
  • 21:24 - 21:27
seriously. I have tried other collagens
  • 21:27 - 21:30
and I hated them. They wouldn't dissolve
  • 21:30 - 21:32
in my coffee. They had a weird taste.
  • 21:32 - 21:34
And like they would just change the
  • 21:34 - 21:37
consistency of the coffee itself, like
  • 21:37 - 21:38
it was horrible. This is very important
  • 21:38 - 21:40
to me, like you guys don't even get it.
  • 21:40 - 21:42
So if you want to be super stoked, have
  • 21:42 - 21:46
    some personalized vitamins that are
  • 21:46 - 21:47
    researched-backed and reap all
  • 21:47 - 21:49
their benefits, click here to take the
  • 21:49 - 21:53
quiz and use my code NIKKIC for 50% off
  • 21:53 - 21:56
subscription items in your first order.
  • 21:56 - 21:58
Thank you so much Care/Of for sponsoring
  • 21:58 - 22:00
us today. And now, back to the video.
  • 22:00 - 22:05
Welcome back! Now we're entering the calm
  • 22:05 - 22:07
before the storm and what I mean by that
  • 22:07 - 22:12
is that we are on the cusp of dramageddon
  • 22:12 - 22:16
This is literally April 2019 and no one
  • 22:16 - 22:20
had a single clue that the biggest drama
  • 22:20 - 22:23
of the internet would ever see what about
  • 22:23 - 22:26
to occur. Now, let me introduce to the
  • 22:26 - 22:27
    central characters of the dramageddon.
  • 22:27 - 22:29
Ok, so here we have Tati Westbrook. She
  • 22:29 - 22:33
was a beauty guru as well as James'
  • 22:33 - 22:38
mentor and close friend. He even referred
  • 22:38 - 22:41
to her as a mother figure. As you can see
  • 22:41 - 22:44
here, this is James doing Tati's wedding
  • 22:44 - 22:48
makeup like that's how like this was how
  • 22:48 - 22:49
close they were and prior to these
  • 22:49 - 22:51
coming events, Tati had started her own
  • 22:51 - 22:56
supplement company in 2018 called Halo
  • 22:56 - 22:58
Beauty, and they basically sold like hair
  • 22:58 - 23:02
vitamins and skin vitamins, hoopla hoopla.
  • 23:02 - 23:05
Enter Jeffree Star. If you don't know who
  • 23:05 - 23:08
Jeffree Star is, he's probably in the top
  • 23:08 - 23:12
10 worst people on the internet and to
  • 23:12 - 23:15
fully explain why that is that would
  • 23:15 - 23:17
require like a whole three hour video.
  • 23:17 - 23:19
    inaudible
  • 23:19 - 23:21
he has a very successful makeup company
  • 23:21 - 23:23
called "Jeffree Star Cosmetics" and his
  • 23:23 - 23:26
channel at this time was massive in the
  • 23:26 - 23:29
    beauty community. However, not
  • 23:29 - 23:32
as massive as James' and side note,
  • 23:32 - 23:36
in 2024 he lives on a farm and sells yak
  • 23:36 - 23:39
meat. So, there's that. Our last big
  • 23:39 - 23:42
    dramageddon figure is Shane Dodsen.
  • 23:42 - 23:46
Shane is probably also on that top 10 list
  • 23:46 - 23:49
of worse people online. Come to think of
  • 23:49 - 23:50
it, James is too, but we will cross that
  • 23:50 - 23:53
bridge when we get there. What is
  • 23:53 - 23:53
important to know now though, is that in
  • 23:53 - 23:59
landscape of 2019 YouTube, for some reason
  • 23:59 - 24:06
    Jane Dodsen, like a respected
  • 24:06 - 24:07
documentarian, and he has just done a
  • 24:07 - 24:08
    documentary series about Jeffree Star.
  • 24:08 - 24:11
Looking back on it, these videos were not
  • 24:11 - 24:14
good and 60% of them were just like
  • 24:14 - 24:16
filler but each and every one of them got
  • 24:16 - 24:18
around 30 million views. With that it
  • 24:18 - 24:22
mind, this brings us to Coachella 2019.
  • 24:22 - 24:28
This is where is all kicks off dude.
  • 24:28 - 24:32
During this time, James was "seeing" an
  • 24:32 - 24:35
influencer named Gage Gomez. "Seeing" it
  • 24:35 - 24:36
in air quotes because it was less of an
  • 24:36 - 24:37
actual relationship and more of actual
  • 24:37 - 24:42
like bicurious experimental time on Gage's
  • 24:42 - 24:45
end, but they were photographed at this
  • 24:45 - 24:47
Coachella multiple times, which made fans
  • 24:47 - 24:50
start to speculate that James had a
  • 24:50 - 24:52
boyfriend. And so, a lot of people began
  • 24:52 - 24:55
to tweet James about this and he actually
  • 24:55 - 24:57
responded to one of these tweets saying
  • 24:57 - 25:02
something along the lines of "No. I'm
  • 25:02 - 25:04
sadly still single. I was manipulated by
  • 25:04 - 25:06
a conman." I looked everywhere for this
  • 25:06 - 25:08
tweet and read it and writing down
  • 25:08 - 25:11
every thing it said at this point but
  • 25:11 - 25:12
can't find it anymore. So, sources that
  • 25:12 - 25:15
    trust me. James just subtweeted
  • 25:15 - 25:18
that Gage, several times over the
  • 25:18 - 25:22
    Coachella weekend, including this one
  • 25:22 - 25:23
which says, "I'm sitting sobbing in my
  • 25:23 - 25:26
hotel room at 8 am and have to be on set
  • 25:26 - 25:28
in an hour. This is no one's fault but
  • 25:28 - 25:31
my own because my dumbass continues to
  • 25:31 - 25:33
go for the same type of insecure cute
  • 25:33 - 25:36
boys and it gets me hurt, every single
  • 25:36 - 25:38
time. I was started fucking to hate
  • 25:38 - 25:43
myself". Tensions are rising. Things are
  • 25:43 - 25:44
bubbling up, ok. And the next day of the
  • 25:44 - 25:47
festival, James ended up getting mobbed
  • 25:47 - 25:50
by fans because for some reason he didn't
  • 25:50 - 25:53
have like a VIP ticket which would have
  • 25:53 - 25:55
let him in like exclusive spaces to not
  • 25:55 - 25:58
be around so many fans. And so, all these
  • 25:58 - 26:01
people are running up on him right. He is
  • 26:01 - 26:03
like, holy shit, what do I do? And this
  • 26:03 - 26:07
led him to text his friend and fellow
  • 26:07 - 26:08
beauty guru, Nikita Dragon. And he asked
  • 26:08 - 26:10
her for help about the sicky situation.
  • 26:10 - 26:13
And so, she connects him to the Sugarbear
  • 26:13 - 26:15
Hair Team, because they're had their
  • 26:15 - 26:18
own VIP tent space, and they were going
  • 26:18 - 26:20
to let James in and in exchange for him
  • 26:20 - 26:24
    doing just one Sugarbear Hair
  • 26:24 - 26:27
ad on his Instagram story and so,
  • 26:27 - 26:29
with no other choice, he signs the
  • 26:29 - 26:31
contract and gets in that tent. But let
  • 26:31 - 26:34
it be known that Sugarbear Hair was a
  • 26:34 - 26:36
very popular was a very popular vitamin
  • 26:36 - 26:40
brand as in Beauty Vitamins, as in for
  • 26:40 - 26:43
your skin and face. A.K.A. a direct
  • 26:43 - 26:45
    competitor to Tati Westbrook's
  • 26:45 - 26:49
    brand "Halo Beauty" Dramageddon arrived!
  • 26:49 - 26:52
Her story in the making. On April 22,
  • 26:52 - 26:56
James posted his contraction obligated ad
  • 26:56 - 27:00
on Instagram. Notably, as you can see
  • 27:00 - 27:03
here, he's actually promoting their sleep
  • 27:03 - 27:06
gummies, not their skin or hair ones. But
  • 27:06 - 27:08
he does this and then he gets on a plane
  • 27:08 - 27:10
to Australia. For what I am about to say
  • 27:10 - 27:13
next, at this point in time Tati
  • 27:13 - 27:18
Westbrook is 37 years old and James was
  • 27:18 - 27:21
only 19. By the time James landed in
  • 27:21 - 27:23
    Australia, Tati had already posted
  • 27:23 - 27:27
multiple stories of her crying and
  • 27:27 - 27:29
saying she feels so betrayed by a close
  • 27:29 - 27:32
friend and she had been taken advantage
  • 27:32 - 27:35
by somebody she thought she can trust and
  • 27:35 - 27:38
she helped so much and it was very
  • 27:38 - 27:41
obvious, like that she was talking about
  • 27:41 - 27:44
James. Like he literally just posted that
  • 27:44 - 27:47
Sugarbear Hair ad so, people added two
  • 27:47 - 27:50
plus two together so unbeknownst to James,
  • 27:50 - 27:53
thousands and thousands of people had
  • 27:53 - 27:55
begun adding him on Twitter, messaging
  • 27:55 - 27:58
him on Instagram. People he knew were
  • 27:58 - 28:00
sending him messages being like what's
  • 28:00 - 28:02
going on with you and Tati. And so, he
  • 28:02 - 28:03
gets off the plane, right. He sees this.
  • 28:03 - 28:06
He tries to call Tati. He tries to text
  • 28:06 - 28:08
her. He tries to call her husband.
  • 28:08 - 28:10
Neither of them answers but Tati just
  • 28:10 - 28:14
continues to post on Instagram. So, he
  • 28:14 - 28:18
decides to just make a public
  • 28:18 - 28:20
apology post. So the apology read," I want
  • 28:20 - 28:21
to publicly apologize to my close friend
  • 28:21 - 28:23
Tati. She has been like a mother to me
  • 28:23 - 28:26
since before my first days in this
  • 28:26 - 28:28
industry and has given me more love so
  • 28:28 - 28:30
important resources and advice that I
  • 28:30 - 28:33
could ever ask for. This weekend I did an
  • 28:33 - 28:36
Instagram story for sleep vitamins that
  • 28:36 - 28:38
I have been taking because the brand helps
  • 28:38 - 28:41
me with security when the crowd around me
  • 28:41 - 28:43
at Coachella became unsafe. I did not
  • 28:43 - 28:45
accept any money for the post. As most
  • 28:45 - 28:47
of you know, Tati has a vitamin brand
  • 28:47 - 28:51
which I take on a daily basis but at the
  • 28:51 - 28:54
moment, I did not think about the
  • 28:54 - 28:56
competition, which was a major oversight.
  • 28:56 - 28:59
I've supported Tati both online and off
  • 28:59 - 29:01
like she has done for me and I am
  • 29:01 - 29:04
devastated that I hurt somebody that I
  • 29:04 - 29:07
truly love and have endless respect for".
  • 29:07 - 29:11
I think the mature thing for 37-year-old
  • 29:11 - 29:14
Tati to do after seeing this would be to
  • 29:14 - 29:17
just talk to him, but instead she just
  • 29:17 - 29:20
continued ignoring him and posting and
  • 29:20 - 29:22
posting about this situation and crying
  • 29:22 - 29:27
online. And so, a few days later on May 4,
  • 29:27 - 29:31
2019, Gabriel Zamora, another beauty guru,
  • 29:31 - 29:35
posted this video titled "Makeup and
  • 29:35 - 29:37
Opinions". And during this video, he
  • 29:37 - 29:39
indirectly talks about the drama going on
  • 29:39 - 29:42
between Tati and James, saying that it's
  • 29:42 - 29:44
stupid that basically, Tati keeps like
  • 29:44 - 29:47
sub tweeting about him but won't
  • 29:47 - 29:49
actually say what's going on or just talk
  • 29:49 - 29:51
to him and he's honestly so right, like
  • 29:51 - 29:55
this 37-year-old woman just implying that
  • 29:55 - 29:57
    her 19-year-old colleague has done
  • 29:57 - 30:00
something awful for days on end but then
  • 30:00 -
refuses to say anything about it
