Damián Ortega: Alias | Art21 "Extended Play"

  • 0:07 - 0:11
    [Damián Ortega: Alias]
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    [Mexico City]
  • 0:17 - 0:20
I tried to organize my own career
  • 0:20 - 0:24
    working as a cartoonist
    in the leftist newspaper.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    I survived, doing these cartoons
    for many years.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
It was fun, but it was very demanding.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
I started to mix art and comics.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
I used an alias doing my cartoons
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    because I don't feel it's
    the same personality
  • 0:54 - 0:57
who did the cartoons and the artworks.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
    I was completely divided in
    my own understanding of myself.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
But, it was a first approach
to my idea of the Alias books.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
Alias Editorial is an ambitious project--
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    a new experience--
  • 1:17 - 1:20
because it's translated to another language.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    It's appropriation of knowledge
    adapted to our own life,
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    our own context,
    in Mexico City.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
Gabriel Orozco gave me the original
    Marcel Duchamp interview,
  • 1:33 - 1:38
and he said, "You must read every page
of this book, because you will love it."
  • 1:38 - 1:40
My English was worse than it is now--
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    and I tried to read,
but I can't understand very well.
  • 1:43 - 1:48
I asked a friend of mine if he can
translate a little bit to Spanish.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
At the end, I had the complete book translated,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
with a lot of jokes in the translation.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
It's beautiful, because at the end
it's Duchamp completely out of context--
  • 1:59 - 2:05
    it decontextualized him,
and becomes like a Mexican guy [LAUGHS]
  • 2:05 - 2:07
who lives in the Colonia Roma or something.
  • 2:09 - 2:14
This, Cildo Meireles to Lawrence Weiner--
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    also to do this translation.
  • 2:17 - 2:18
He liked very much the idea,
  • 2:18 - 2:20
and he proposed to do the cover.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    That was really great.
  • 2:24 - 2:30
My generation didn't have any of this information
    about contemporary art.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
It was a time when we don't have internet,
    we don't have cell phones.
  • 2:37 - 2:41
We used to share information through photocopies,
    through books.
  • 2:41 - 2:47
One of us can fly to Europe,
or to U.S. or South America,
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    and bring some books back
    about international artists.
  • 2:53 - 2:59
    Appropriation is a statement because
it gives the chance to recontextualize knowledge.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
At the end, every country gives some
    special way of thinking.
