The Science of Being Transgender ft. Gigi Gorgeous

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    There's a lot of
    misinformation out there
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    about what it means
    to be a transgender
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    but recently,
Scientists have begun to look into
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    the Neurology, Physiology, and
    Psychology
  • 0:09 - 0:10
    behind it.
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    So today we're gonna
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    break down what
    Science does know
  • 0:13 - 0:15
in a respectful and educational way
  • 0:15 - 0:17
Hey guys! I'm Gigi Gorgeous and,
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    today, I'm here with
    ASAPScience
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    to break down Science
    of Being Transgender
  • 0:22 - 0:24
Before we get to deep into it,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
we have to look at your genetic sex.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    Or the chromosomes you have.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    These were determine
    right at fertilization
  • 0:30 - 0:32
When the sperm cell from your father
  • 0:32 - 0:34
which carries an 'X' or a 'Y' chromosome
  • 0:34 - 0:38
fuse with the egg from your mother,
    which carries an 'X' chromosome.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
But until 6 or 7 weeks
    after fertilization,
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    both 'XY' and 'XX' embryos
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    have identical Gonads.
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    Around 7 weeks
  • 0:46 - 0:48
the male sex organs start to develop
  • 0:48 - 0:51
because of a gene on 'Y' chromosome
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    called 'SRY'
  • 0:52 - 0:54
It causes cells to become more specialized
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    and these cells create 'Testosterone'
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    which in turn triggers
    the development
  • 0:58 - 1:00
of structure like the penis & scrotum
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    while other cells block female
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    development by degenerating
    the female ducts.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    However,
    in female development,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    because there is no
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    'Y' chromosome
    with the 'SRY' gene
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    These ducts stay intact
    and become
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    the uterus cervix,
    upper vagina, and the oviduct
  • 1:14 - 1:17
with the help of Estrogen, &
    chemicals secreted
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    by the early kidney.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    but, it's not always
    that simple,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    there are sometimes even
    RARE COMBINATIONS
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    like 'XXY',
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    'XXX'
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    'XXYY' etc.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    And even people
    with 'XX" Chromosomes
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    that develop male genitals
    & characteristics
  • 1:33 - 1:35
due to a piece of the 'Y'
    chromosome breaking off,
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    and switching places to
    an 'X' chromosome.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    But SEXUAL DIFFERENTIATION
    in a brain, actually
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    happens much later
    than Gonadal Differentiation.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    And yes,
    although controversial
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    Male and Female
    brains have structural
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    and functional differences
    between each other.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    Studies have found
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    that males generally
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    have a larger cerebrum
    cerebellum.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    and hippo campus.
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    While females have
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    higher density left frontal lobe,
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    and larger volumes
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    in the right frontal lobe.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
So what exactly do we see
when we look at the brain?
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    of a transgender person?
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    Several studies have shown that
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    transgender brains
    are both
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    structurally and functionally
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    more similar to their experienced
    gender identity
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    than their biological sex.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
One study found that transwomen who
  • 2:18 - 2:20
despite being assigned male at birth
  • 2:20 - 2:22
had a smaller female size structure
    in the hypothalamus.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    MRI scans also show the
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    brain structures of trans people
  • 2:27 - 2:29
to be more similar in thickness into their
  • 2:29 - 2:31
experienced gender and not their sex.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    Finally, the pheromone
    Androstadienone
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    causes
    different hypothalamic
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    responses in male
    and female brains
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    And, when individuals
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    with Gender Dysphoria
    were exposed to it,
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    hypothalamic response
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    matches their perceived gender
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    rather than their sex.
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    These studies help to
    highlight how
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    masculinization or
    feminization
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    of the Gonads is not
always the same as the brain
  • 2:51 - 2:53
and that there's a difference between
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    your sex or your anatomy
    & gender
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    or how you perceived
    your own body.
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    There also seems to be
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    a genetic component
    to transgender identity.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    Looking at family histories
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    of gender identity
    incongruence
  • 3:03 - 3:05
seems to run in the family,
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    meaning they maybe inherited
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    The 'CYP17' gene which controls
  • 3:08 - 3:10
the body's level of sex hormones
  • 3:10 - 3:13
has a changed allele that is expressed
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    frequently in trans man.
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    Although, more
    research could be done,
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    scientists are currently
    at looking over
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    3 Million DNA Markers
    for transgender identity
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    to investigate any genetic
    link for being trans.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    Even though scientific studies
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    validate the experience
    of transgender people
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    There's still more suffering from
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    depression and anxiety
    than the general public.
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    The risk of suicide
  • 3:34 - 3:36
is more prominent in transgender people
  • 3:36 - 3:38
who have been rejected by their family
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    discriminated in their workplace,
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    or in health care.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    Sucide risks seems to
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    decreased after gender transitioning.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
Suggesting that gender dysphoria can cause
  • 3:47 - 3:49
an extreme amount of emotional pain
  • 3:49 - 3:51
even to the point of suicide.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
If you, a family member, or a friend is
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    suffering from gender dysphoria ,
  • 3:55 - 3:57
there are few links in the description
