The Electric Car & Industry | Michiel Langezaal | TEDxMaastricht
-
0:12 - 0:13Hi. Em, yeah.
-
0:13 - 0:16I'm gonna tell you something about
what's happening in the car industry. -
0:16 - 0:17And I thought let's...
-
0:17 - 0:20Let's have the first picture
put on the screen. -
0:20 - 0:21This car.
-
0:21 - 0:22I'd like to see some hands.
-
0:22 - 0:24Who already has seen
this car on the road? -
0:24 - 0:25Who knows this car?
-
0:26 - 0:28Okay. That's quite a lot.
-
0:29 - 0:30Well...
-
0:30 - 0:32A friend of mine has one.
-
0:33 - 0:34And...
-
0:34 - 0:37When I talk with him about it, he's..
-
0:37 - 0:39He's always super enthusiastic.
-
0:39 - 0:42He says "Yeah, this car,
it just accelerates like hell!" -
0:42 - 0:43"It's crazy!"
-
0:44 - 0:45"And it has this huge screen!"
-
0:45 - 0:47"And I can download apps on it."
-
0:47 - 0:49"And I can surf the web."
-
0:49 - 0:50"It's amazing!"
-
0:50 - 0:51"It's not just an electric car."
-
0:51 - 0:54"It doesn't drive electric.
It's more than that." -
0:54 - 0:55And...
-
0:56 - 0:57Well, there are also
the non-enthusiasts. -
0:57 - 1:00And I say "Well yeah,
but it's heavily subsidized." -
1:00 - 1:02"And that will never grow."
-
1:02 - 1:05"And it still charges in hours."
-
1:05 - 1:06Well that's gonna change.
-
1:06 - 1:08And that's what I'm talking about today.
-
1:08 - 1:10Em...
-
1:10 - 1:11What's my background?
-
1:11 - 1:13I'm CEO and founder of Fastned.
-
1:13 - 1:15Fastned builds charging stations.
-
1:15 - 1:16Like this.
-
1:16 - 1:19Just like a regular gas station.
-
1:19 - 1:21They're situated along the highway.
-
1:21 - 1:25And you can just exit the highway,
-
1:25 - 1:27go into the charging station,
-
1:27 - 1:29put the plug in the car,
-
1:29 - 1:30press start
-
1:30 - 1:32and 20 minutes later
the car is full. -
1:32 - 1:35What that will do is that will give
-
1:35 - 1:38electric vehicles drivers the freedom
to drive wherever they like, -
1:38 - 1:40just like a gasoline car.
-
1:40 - 1:41Why do you buy a car?
-
1:41 - 1:43You buy a car because
it gives you freedom. -
1:43 - 1:45That's why you want it.
-
1:45 - 1:47And that's what we're going to do.
-
1:47 - 1:51Basically the same as
Shell or BP that puts on -
1:51 - 1:53gasoline stations.
-
1:54 - 1:57So why do I think that this industry
-
1:57 - 2:00is headed towards this Kodak moment?
-
2:01 - 2:05Kodak is the classical example of
-
2:06 - 2:10the photography industry being
disrupted by the digital camera. -
2:10 - 2:12And what we see here,
-
2:12 - 2:14what we see happening
with the electric car -
2:14 - 2:16is to some extent the same.
-
2:16 - 2:18We see cars becoming electric.
-
2:18 - 2:20It's becoming an electric appliance.
-
2:20 - 2:23And it follows a totally different course
-
2:23 - 2:27and experience curve than we are
used to from mechanical products -
2:27 - 2:30like the current fossil fuel car
that we know. -
2:30 - 2:33And this electric appliance
-
2:33 - 2:35it just goes through a cost curve
-
2:35 - 2:37that you know from the LCD TV
that you have at home, -
2:37 - 2:41from the improvement that
we've seen in digital cameras. -
2:41 - 2:45Year on year these products get better
and better and better. -
2:45 - 2:47And that is disruptive.
-
2:47 - 2:48That's highly disruptive.
-
2:48 - 2:50If you look at solar panels,
-
2:50 - 2:52more and more houses in the Netherlands,
-
2:52 - 2:55they are putting solar panels
on their roofs. -
2:56 - 2:57Why are they doing that?
-
2:57 - 2:58Well, because of this:
-
2:58 - 3:01this curve going down, down, down.
-
3:01 - 3:04Year on year improvements in solar cells
-
3:04 - 3:06are around 20%.
-
3:06 - 3:0920% per year to get cheaper, better, etc.
-
3:09 - 3:10And what that means,
-
3:10 - 3:12if you do that every year,
-
3:12 - 3:15at some point, you'll cross
that line of grid parity. -
3:15 - 3:18At some point, your energy
from the solar panels -
3:18 - 3:19will become cheaper than
-
3:19 - 3:21the energy that you can buy
from the grid. -
3:22 - 3:24And the same is happening with batteries.
-
3:24 - 3:27The batteries, that's the main cost
component of our electric car, -
3:27 - 3:30they're getting cheaper
and cheaper every day. -
3:31 - 3:33We've seen the same from digital cameras.
-
3:33 - 3:35Digital cameras got better.
-
3:35 - 3:38They got more capacity of photos.
-
3:38 - 3:40They got more megapixels.
-
3:40 - 3:44In 10 years, the industry went
from 0 to 100% adoption. -
3:44 - 3:46When the photographers didn't like
-
3:46 - 3:47the camera in the beginning,
-
3:47 - 3:49they now love it.
-
3:49 - 3:52And we see the same happening
with electric cars. -
3:52 - 3:53They will charge faster.
-
3:53 - 3:55They will have more range.
-
3:56 - 4:00And it's not as fast as the
digital camera in development, -
4:00 - 4:02but it will be around 20% per year.
-
4:05 - 4:07And I think, if we translate that
to the car industry, -
4:07 - 4:09this is what we see happening:
-
4:09 - 4:12this was an extract of the Auto Bild,
-
4:12 - 4:14a German car magazine.
-
4:14 - 4:17It basically states the opinion,
-
4:17 - 4:21or let's say how the Germans thought
about the introduction of the Tesla. -
4:22 - 4:23Last month,
-
4:25 - 4:30Tesla sold 289 vehicles in the Netherlands
-
4:30 - 4:31of the type Model S.
-
4:31 - 4:36In that same month,
BMW and Audi combined sold... -
4:36 - 4:40244 Audi A6 and BMW 5 series.
-
4:41 - 4:42That's what I call disruption.
-
4:43 - 4:46In 1 or 2 years, you got
a serious market share. -
4:46 - 4:49It's already happening
in this luxury segment. -
4:53 - 4:54Then besides price,
-
4:54 - 4:55what else,
-
4:55 - 4:57why would it be disruptive?
-
4:58 - 5:00An electric car,
you can charge it at home. -
5:01 - 5:03And at home, electricity is very cheap.
-
5:04 - 5:07You can basically put your car
in a wall socket. -
5:08 - 5:11It's a huge incentive for people
to buy a car. Why? -
5:12 - 5:16If you drive it for 2 Euros for 100 km,
-
5:17 - 5:21and you have your own parking space
for your car near your home, -
5:22 - 5:23that makes a lot of sense.
-
5:23 - 5:27You basically get a
0 marginal cost product. -
5:27 - 5:30So the whole cost perception of
the product of an electric car -
5:30 - 5:33will be totally different
than a gasoline car. -
5:33 - 5:35And that will be disruptive.
-
5:38 - 5:40This is what's gonna
happen in the end. -
5:41 - 5:44What we will see is
in the coming 10 to 15 years, -
5:44 - 5:46we will see this market accelerate
-
5:47 - 5:49Today this market is growing
-
5:49 - 5:51at 50 or 100% per year.
-
5:51 - 5:53And that will accelerate.
-
5:53 - 5:56And it will go through the hockey stick
in the coming years. -
5:57 - 5:58And that means that in the end,
-
5:58 - 6:01gasoline stations will be disrupted.
-
6:02 - 6:06The existing car brands
that are sitting ducks, -
6:06 - 6:08they will be disrupted as well.
-
6:09 - 6:13Only car brands that will
really really step in, -
6:13 - 6:16and today start their development,
-
6:16 - 6:18they will get there,
-
6:18 - 6:19they will be able to go along.
-
6:20 - 6:21Thank you very much.
-
6:21 - 6:25(Applause)
