now let's get right into the podcast
  • 0:27 - 0:29
lauren googie welcome to the gamedev.tv
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    podcast
  • 0:31 - 0:34
thank you if you are a ceo of the
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    cinematic pie
  • 0:35 - 0:39
correct chromatic pie or magpie my bad
  • 0:39 - 0:41
i knew it i was like i looked it up
  • 0:41 - 0:42
early and i was like i don't think
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    that's right
  • 0:43 - 0:45
we had a chromatic pie so explain a
  • 0:45 - 0:46
little bit what that that is and a
  • 0:46 - 0:47
little bit about who you are and then
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    we'll go from there
  • 0:49 - 0:52
well uh my name is lauren and i'm born
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    and raised in new zealand
  • 0:53 - 0:57
down under under and um i
  • 0:57 - 1:00
just have a passion for video games as a
  • 1:00 - 1:02
lot of us do it's very deep seated for
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    me from
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    childhood um and i just
  • 1:06 - 1:09
i just found my home really i found i'm
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    so lucky that i've found
  • 1:10 - 1:12
a place where i can grow a career and
  • 1:12 - 1:14
really expand into all sorts of
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    different
  • 1:15 - 1:17
corners of it which is what i'm doing
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    with chromatic pie
  • 1:19 - 1:22
that's awesome yes i saw the little bit
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    about it
  • 1:23 - 1:25
you're basically trying to represent all
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    communities
  • 1:26 - 1:29
in one basically right yeah so that's
  • 1:29 - 1:30
that's really good nowadays because it's
  • 1:30 - 1:32
like we need more of that so people can
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    feel like representative and just
  • 1:34 - 1:36
connected and all that stuff but i want
  • 1:36 - 1:36
    to get
  • 1:36 - 1:38
to how you got started follow this so
  • 1:38 - 1:41
back when you were younger did you
  • 1:41 - 1:42
play a lot of games were you into game
  • 1:42 - 1:44
design or you were just doing your thing
  • 1:44 - 1:44
    like
  • 1:44 - 1:48
what's your story my story so when i was
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    younger um
  • 1:49 - 1:51
my my dad was a gamer since before i was
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    born
  • 1:52 - 1:55
so i would watch him play quake doom and
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    half-life
  • 1:56 - 2:00
probably a bit too young to watch but
  • 2:00 - 2:02
like i just loved it you know i
  • 2:02 - 2:05
he'd play it and i was so enthralled by
  • 2:05 - 2:07
what was going on on this computer
  • 2:07 - 2:08
screen and it was like a whole
  • 2:08 - 2:11
new experience whole new world for me so
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    i grew up
  • 2:12 - 2:15
with that and so we had the sega master
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    system too which i
  • 2:16 - 2:19
still have it's uh on one of my shelves
  • 2:19 - 2:24
in the lounge with all the games
  • 2:27 - 2:31
um i have chuck rock and
  • 2:31 - 2:37
i've got asterisks and a balux
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    [Music]
  • 2:41 - 2:44
um so we had that one and then of course
  • 2:44 - 2:46
we went up to the playstation one
  • 2:46 - 2:50
my dad also had a a game boy um and a
  • 2:50 - 2:52
few of the types of those
  • 2:52 - 2:53
um but that was like his one he didn't
  • 2:53 - 2:55
let us play on it too much because it
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    was
  • 2:57 - 3:00
it was his thing yeah you want to mess
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    up the save data
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    yeah um and then yeah
  • 3:05 - 3:08
just their ps2 uh xbox you know it just
  • 3:08 - 3:10
sort of it just evolved over time and
  • 3:10 - 3:12
when i was at school i would quite often
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    just come home and uh
  • 3:14 - 3:16
you know drop my bag down and just play
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    video games
  • 3:17 - 3:20
um until you know homework or dinner
  • 3:20 - 3:20
    time so
  • 3:20 - 3:22
for me video games has always been a
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    part of my life um
  • 3:24 - 3:26
for me i i started in the entertainment
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    aspect of things
  • 3:28 - 3:30
i was going through quite a hard time in
  • 3:30 - 3:33
my life in my early 20s and i found this
  • 3:33 - 3:33
    youtuber
  • 3:33 - 3:36
called the red bread and so i started
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    watching his
  • 3:37 - 3:40
let's plays and you know he helped me
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    through my situation
  • 3:41 - 3:44
and you know we all go through things
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    but i found that
  • 3:45 - 3:48
people playing video games for others
  • 3:48 - 3:50
was just this amazing medium and i
  • 3:50 - 3:52
really wanted to tap into that myself
  • 3:52 - 3:53
    and so
  • 3:53 - 3:54
that's really where my uh streaming
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    career began
  • 3:56 - 4:00
and i this is a lengthy story
  • 4:00 - 4:04
no worries yeah it's all good we all
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    want to hear it
  • 4:05 - 4:08
yeah yeah so i guess from you know
  • 4:08 - 4:10
streaming on twitch it just sort of took
  • 4:10 - 4:11
    off
  • 4:11 - 4:13
and uh i just i just loved interacting
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    with people
  • 4:14 - 4:17
in real time and i earned enough money
  • 4:17 - 4:19
where i could fly to america for my very
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    first time
  • 4:20 - 4:23
and attend the the first twitchcon uh
  • 4:23 - 4:23
    and
  • 4:23 - 4:25
i kept returning to go to other gaming
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    conventions
  • 4:27 - 4:30
and so i just loved networking loved
  • 4:30 - 4:33
meeting the community and just loved
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    what i did
  • 4:34 - 4:36
um but i found through playing my video
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    games on the hardest difficulty
  • 4:38 - 4:42
which is something not everyone does but
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    i i love a challenge i found from that
  • 4:45 - 4:47
that i became more interested in game
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    design and um
  • 4:49 - 4:52
you know the mechanics of of combat and
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    boss fights and
  • 4:53 - 4:56
i just really wanted to learn more and
  • 4:56 - 4:56
    so i
  • 4:56 - 4:59
i put out on twitter one day you know
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    i'm looking for a
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    a community management position because
  • 5:02 - 5:04
i knew community management quite well
  • 5:04 - 5:07
um from this the twitch side of things
  • 5:07 - 5:09
so i got a job as a community manager at
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    a studio um
  • 5:10 - 5:13
here in wellington where i currently am
  • 5:13 - 5:14
and then they offered me to be a
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    producer because they saw some
  • 5:16 - 5:19
potential in me so i took that role uh
  • 5:19 - 5:23
and then of course covered hit oh no
  • 5:23 - 5:23
    yeah and
  • 5:23 - 5:26
you know the layoffs and all that sort
  • 5:26 - 5:29
of jazz so i found myself in a position
  • 5:29 - 5:31
where i was like you know what
  • 5:31 - 5:35
i love video games i see uh
  • 5:35 - 5:37
sort of gaps within the industry for
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    inclusion diversity
  • 5:38 - 5:41
and accessibility and i really want to
  • 5:41 - 5:44
use my leverage from all the the work
  • 5:44 - 5:45
    i've done over the years
  • 5:45 - 5:46
um you know all the social media
  • 5:46 - 5:48
    presence that i've built up
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    and really just build something
  • 5:50 - 5:52
meaningful and that's going to help you
  • 5:52 - 5:53
    know propel
  • 5:53 - 5:55
the industry in new zealand but also
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    globally
  • 5:56 - 5:58
you know we need to see more inclusive
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    and accessibility
  • 6:00 - 6:05
in games i agree that's beautiful story
  • 6:05 - 6:09
thanks now i want to get into the whole
  • 6:09 - 6:12
you playing games on the hard difficulty
  • 6:12 - 6:13
is that something you just want to
  • 6:13 - 6:15
challenge yourself like what is the
  • 6:15 - 6:16
thought process because i'm gonna say
  • 6:16 - 6:17
i'm on the same thing but i do it
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    because like
  • 6:19 - 6:21
go big and go home gotta prove myself
  • 6:21 - 6:24
    that i'm really good stuff
  • 6:24 - 6:27
that's it you know i i started doing it
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    because i just wanted
  • 6:29 - 6:30
like something else you know something
  • 6:30 - 6:32
    more interesting
  • 6:32 - 6:35
um and you know it you i'd start a game
  • 6:35 - 6:37
and this is on twitch and it's in front
  • 6:37 - 6:38
of people so it's not like i'm just
  • 6:38 - 6:40
doing it at home by myself which is
  • 6:40 - 6:42
way better yeah right you know you're
  • 6:42 - 6:44
    not as vulnerable
  • 6:44 - 6:47
yeah yeah yeah exactly watch me die like
  • 6:47 - 6:49
all these times and people would like
  • 6:49 - 6:51
come and go like ah she's not really
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    good but then
  • 6:52 - 6:54
you know a few hours into every game i
  • 6:54 - 6:56
overcome that learning curve and then i
  • 6:56 - 6:58
end up just propelling to the finish
  • 6:58 - 7:01
and for me that feeling is just i love
  • 7:01 - 7:03
that feeling you know that i've
  • 7:03 - 7:05
i've stuck it in and i've learned the
  • 7:05 - 7:07
mechanics and i can really knuckle down
  • 7:07 - 7:09
and just like get through the game
  • 7:09 - 7:11
and i just love that sense of um
  • 7:11 - 7:12
    accomplishment and
  • 7:12 - 7:15
uh the people that watch me they also
  • 7:15 - 7:16
    they're like wow
  • 7:16 - 7:17
you know you actually did the thing
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    you're really good [ __ ]
  • 7:19 - 7:21
no but seriously it's it's weird because
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    like you when you
  • 7:23 - 7:25
start to play in hard difficulties and
  • 7:25 - 7:26
you get better and better and better you
  • 7:26 - 7:28
really become good at the game like i
  • 7:28 - 7:30
played god of war and got a war mode and
  • 7:30 - 7:31
    you really can't get hit
  • 7:31 - 7:34
oh my gosh then you get to a point
  • 7:34 - 7:35
you're doing all the cool stuff you're
  • 7:35 - 7:37
like you can't touch me you can't get me
  • 7:37 - 7:38
i've learned the tricks i've learned
  • 7:38 - 7:40
this stuff i know when you're gonna hit
  • 7:40 - 7:40
    me it's
  • 7:40 - 7:42
    it's incredible and and it's it's cool
  • 7:42 - 7:44
because you go into this like flow state
  • 7:44 - 7:47
where you you just won't give up until
  • 7:47 - 7:48
you get there which i think can
  • 7:48 - 7:50
translate into like game design game
  • 7:50 - 7:51
    programming like
  • 7:51 - 7:51
you get to a point where you're like
  • 7:51 - 7:53
you're going to fail but like well in
  • 7:53 - 7:54
the game i failed but i kept failing
  • 7:54 - 7:56
failing and eventually i made it so
  • 7:56 - 7:57
maybe the same thing can happen here i
  • 7:57 - 7:59
don't know if you have the same type of
  • 7:59 - 8:02
like perspective when you play these
  • 8:02 - 8:02
    hard
  • 8:02 - 8:05
games but yeah definitely there was a
  • 8:05 - 8:07
    pattern god of war
  • 8:07 - 8:09
earlier in the game on god of war mode
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    that i was playing in
  • 8:10 - 8:12
it was just you had the x but you had
  • 8:12 - 8:14
all those uh i can't remember
  • 8:14 - 8:15
their names but they were like frozen
  • 8:15 - 8:18
and if you hit them they came to life
  • 8:18 - 8:20
um and it was really hard to avoid you
  • 8:20 - 8:21
    know you're in this confined
  • 8:21 - 8:24
area and um that part i
  • 8:24 - 8:27
i was stuck there so many times and died
  • 8:27 - 8:29
    so many times but
  • 8:29 - 8:32
after then it really set me up for like
  • 8:32 - 8:34
the rest of the game and then
  • 8:34 - 8:35
whenever those enemies came along i was
  • 8:35 - 8:38
    like you guys are nothing
  • 8:38 - 8:39
did you beat the game like the whole
  • 8:39 - 8:41
    game i did yep
  • 8:41 - 8:45
i couldn't balder at the end i tried so
  • 8:45 - 8:46
many times i got to like the last part
  • 8:46 - 8:49
of his health and i just i was like i'm
  • 8:49 - 8:49
    done
  • 8:49 - 8:50
    i've spent i think i spent like a whole
  • 8:50 - 8:53
day actually like 24 hours on it and i
  • 8:53 - 8:54
    was like all right
  • 8:54 - 8:56
it's it's time it's time to cut it yeah
  • 8:56 - 8:58
yeah sometimes you have to sit back and
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    be like
  • 9:00 - 9:01
i'll come back to this i got close
  • 9:01 - 9:02
enough because i watched a little bit
  • 9:02 - 9:04
afterwards i was like oh no i'm at the
  • 9:04 - 9:06
end of the game i pretty much beat it
  • 9:06 - 9:08
so but the hardest part too and i don't
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    think you didn't easy
  • 9:10 - 9:12
is when you got them low enough health
  • 9:12 - 9:13
    they would like
  • 9:13 - 9:15
re-heal and then have a second bar
  • 9:15 - 9:16
health so i remember i was watching my
  • 9:16 - 9:18
friend playing like damn i was like bro
  • 9:18 - 9:19
    this is too easy
  • 9:19 - 9:21
i'm just like slashes and i'm like you
  • 9:21 - 9:22
have to go gotta warm up makes you
  • 9:22 - 9:23
    better
  • 9:23 - 9:26
it makes you stronger so yeah no it's
  • 9:26 - 9:26
    that
  • 9:26 - 9:29
yeah i remember being on top of the the
  • 9:29 - 9:30
    mountains
  • 9:30 - 9:32
when you get the achievement after
  • 9:32 - 9:34
walking through this this cave scene
  • 9:34 - 9:37
and um the music plays and it's just
  • 9:37 - 9:38
    this like
  • 9:38 - 9:42
oh i did it that's such a good game i
  • 9:42 - 9:44
can't wait for the next one
  • 9:45 - 9:47
now when you were doing your producer
  • 9:47 - 9:49
jump how was what was that like how did
  • 9:49 - 9:50
    you
  • 9:50 - 9:52
prepare for that and you evolved in that
  • 9:52 - 9:53
    role
  • 9:53 - 9:56
wow yeah so being a producer for the
  • 9:56 - 9:58
    first time was uh
  • 9:58 - 10:00
quite it was quite something you know
  • 10:00 - 10:02
when when i was a part of um the studios
  • 10:02 - 10:05
called a44 games um they didn't really
  • 10:05 - 10:06
    have a
  • 10:06 - 10:09
    producer structure at the time
  • 10:09 - 10:11
so we had um two other producers at the
  • 10:11 - 10:14
    time another junior another mid-level
  • 10:14 - 10:15
    producer
  • 10:15 - 10:18
um so we didn't really have a program to
  • 10:18 - 10:18
    really
  • 10:18 - 10:21
nestle into but then we got a senior
  • 10:21 - 10:22
    producer in
  • 10:22 - 10:26
from the united states and she was just
  • 10:26 - 10:30
incredible she came in february last
  • 10:30 - 10:31
    year
  • 10:31 - 10:34
and of course i think i left in
  • 10:34 - 10:37
june i believe so i was only there with
  • 10:37 - 10:39
her for a short amount of time but
  • 10:39 - 10:41
gosh she had like 30 years experience
  • 10:41 - 10:43
and i really just got to go under her
  • 10:43 - 10:44
    wing
  • 10:44 - 10:46
and learn you know how successful you
  • 10:46 - 10:48
know how she's made herself successful
  • 10:48 - 10:49
    and helped other companies
  • 10:49 - 10:51
and so i really took a lot from that you
  • 10:51 - 10:52
    know i'm someone that
  • 10:52 - 10:55
absorbs a lot uh probably more than i
  • 10:55 - 10:56
    lead on to
  • 10:56 - 10:58
as well um and i really just take it all
  • 10:58 - 11:00
    in take it on board
  • 11:00 - 11:03
i was the producer for um
  • 11:03 - 11:05
coding first and then i jumped over to
  • 11:05 - 11:06
    design
  • 11:06 - 11:09
so i was looking after systems narrative
  • 11:09 - 11:11
you know all the different facets of
  • 11:11 - 11:12
    design
  • 11:12 - 11:14
so during that as well i got to
  • 11:14 - 11:16
    understand you know
  • 11:16 - 11:17
    how the different departments
  • 11:17 - 11:19
    communicate with each other um
  • 11:19 - 11:21
got to understand you know what the
  • 11:21 - 11:23
    different departments actually
  • 11:23 - 11:25
do what it's about how it all comes to
  • 11:25 - 11:26
    life
  • 11:26 - 11:29
and i just yeah i just gained such a
  • 11:29 - 11:30
passion for it and was like you know
  • 11:30 - 11:32
what i know enough to start an indie
  • 11:32 - 11:33
    game company
  • 11:33 - 11:35
you know i don't want to start this big
  • 11:35 - 11:38
triple a like you know but i can start
  • 11:38 - 11:40
indian like and go from there so
  • 11:40 - 11:42
yeah i loved being a producer it was
  • 11:42 - 11:43
    great wow
  • 11:43 - 11:46
okay and so did you go to school for any
  • 11:46 - 11:47
    game
  • 11:47 - 11:49
design game development or this was just
  • 11:49 - 11:50
from twitch and then eventually evolving
  • 11:50 - 11:52
towards being a producer and then
  • 11:52 - 11:54
or how did that yeah yeah i think yeah
  • 11:54 - 11:56
um it was lucky you know i wanted
  • 11:56 - 11:58
a i wanted a career uh some more
  • 11:58 - 12:01
financial stability in my life um
  • 12:01 - 12:02
you know that twitch couldn't really
  • 12:02 - 12:05
give me so i thought you know community
  • 12:05 - 12:06
    management would be
  • 12:06 - 12:09
the gig and um that felt like a natural
  • 12:09 - 12:12
step to do that but when they offered me
  • 12:12 - 12:13
    a job as a producer
  • 12:13 - 12:15
you know it sort of opened doors for me
  • 12:15 - 12:16
    and i
  • 12:16 - 12:18
i did see myself wanting to be a
  • 12:18 - 12:20
creative director one day while i was at
  • 12:20 - 12:21
    the studio
  • 12:21 - 12:23
you know like leveling up to that level
  • 12:23 - 12:26
over over a certain amount of years
  • 12:26 - 12:29
um but no you know i asked other
  • 12:29 - 12:31
creative directors within the studio i
  • 12:31 - 12:32
was like you know would you recommend
  • 12:32 - 12:34
    going to school
  • 12:34 - 12:35
for something like this and they're like
  • 12:35 - 12:37
no you can learn it all in house
  • 12:37 - 12:39
and a lot of teams are like that you
  • 12:39 - 12:40
    know they will um
  • 12:40 - 12:43
help support you to to get to the the
  • 12:43 - 12:45
status that you want to get to
  • 12:45 - 12:47
over time um but you know if you want to
  • 12:47 - 12:48
    go to
  • 12:48 - 12:50
a game design school and whatnot those
  • 12:50 - 12:51
    are definitely
  • 12:51 - 12:53
helpful but if you're already in the
  • 12:53 - 12:55
industry and you've worked at a game
  • 12:55 - 12:56
    studio
  • 12:56 - 12:58
and you feel like you have enough
  • 12:58 - 12:59
    experience to start something
  • 12:59 - 13:01
um you know there's really nothing
  • 13:01 - 13:03
    holding you back and um
  • 13:03 - 13:05
yeah i would just say just go for it
  • 13:05 - 13:07
like i have i have a bit of courage
  • 13:07 - 13:08
    though
  • 13:08 - 13:10
it does take courage but uh yeah yeah i
  • 13:10 - 13:11
    was gonna ask
  • 13:11 - 13:14
dude were you nervous not well let's not
  • 13:14 - 13:15
talk about the suit yet but were you
  • 13:15 - 13:16
    nervous when they were like
  • 13:16 - 13:19
you want to be a producer and then yeah
  • 13:19 - 13:21
because you know experience before so
  • 13:21 - 13:22
you were like i have community
  • 13:22 - 13:23
    management experience but not producers
  • 13:23 - 13:24
how did you feel about that were you
  • 13:24 - 13:25
    like
  • 13:25 - 13:27
let's just bring it on or was your
  • 13:27 - 13:28
    mindset yeah um
  • 13:28 - 13:31
for yes i was i was you know i've got a
  • 13:31 - 13:32
    really optimistic attitude
  • 13:32 - 13:35
and uh you know i just feel like you
  • 13:35 - 13:37
know anything i could put my mind to
  • 13:37 - 13:39
i can i can do it and if if it doesn't
  • 13:39 - 13:41
turn out it doesn't turn out you know
  • 13:41 - 13:42
what have you got to lose so
  • 13:42 - 13:45
i really just gave it my all um and
  • 13:45 - 13:46
    really tried to learn
  • 13:46 - 13:48
in my own way in my own time about how
  • 13:48 - 13:50
    everything works and
  • 13:50 - 13:52
i got to know the people at the studio
  • 13:52 - 13:53
as well you know not just
  • 13:53 - 13:56
from a level of you know telling them
  • 13:56 - 13:56
    when their
  • 13:56 - 13:59
tasks were due or milestones and whatnot
  • 13:59 - 14:01
but actually you know getting to know
  • 14:01 - 14:02
    them as people
  • 14:02 - 14:05
and um how these different individuals
  • 14:05 - 14:08
    work together but so differently
  • 14:08 - 14:10
you know and so i that's what i really
  • 14:10 - 14:12
loved about being a producer was that
  • 14:12 - 14:15
the communication aspect and that like
  • 14:15 - 14:18
the human level of like i don't i'm not
  • 14:18 - 14:19
just going to be this person that tells
  • 14:19 - 14:20
    you
  • 14:20 - 14:23
what to do where to go but actually like
  • 14:23 - 14:26
    you know get amongst it
  • 14:26 - 14:29
    okay wow that's crazy that's
  • 14:29 - 14:31
    it's just it's insane because i've known
  • 14:31 - 14:32
a lot of people even myself where it's
  • 14:32 - 14:33
    just like
  • 14:33 - 14:34
i don't know if i feel ready for that
  • 14:34 - 14:36
even though i've done a lot of different
  • 14:36 - 14:37
    things
  • 14:37 - 14:38
i've never done it so you feel kind of
  • 14:38 - 14:40
nervous you get that pushback but it's
  • 14:40 - 14:41
like you got to try it
  • 14:41 - 14:43
to learn what it's like and infinitely
  • 14:43 - 14:44
    yeah
  • 14:44 - 14:47
so going to the twitch how did you get
  • 14:47 - 14:49
    that started you just started
  • 14:49 - 14:50
    streaming started playing games and
  • 14:50 - 14:52
showing the world with like how did you
  • 14:52 - 14:54
get how did you get popular
  • 14:54 - 14:57
all right so uh i started streaming in
  • 14:57 - 14:59
    january 2015
  • 14:59 - 15:01
so i've actually been doing it for six
  • 15:01 - 15:02
    years now
  • 15:02 - 15:04
and we'll probably keep doing it till
  • 15:04 - 15:06
    i'm elderly i suppose
  • 15:06 - 15:09
why not kind of weird yeah i mean
  • 15:09 - 15:11
at that stage i guess it'll be like
  • 15:11 - 15:13
normal we'll be like the first ones to
  • 15:13 - 15:15
    be like elderly
  • 15:15 - 15:18
    gaming personalities or whatever but
  • 15:18 - 15:19
    that's really funny that'd be
  • 15:19 - 15:20
interesting you'd be in all ground would
  • 15:20 - 15:20
    be like hey
  • 15:20 - 15:22
you guys ready to play some whatever
  • 15:22 - 15:24
    yeah like your followers have
  • 15:24 - 15:26
followed you through since you know your
  • 15:26 - 15:27
    conception you're all
  • 15:27 - 15:31
    old you know i wonder
  • 15:31 - 15:33
oh my goodness so for me you know i
  • 15:33 - 15:34
    started with destiny
  • 15:34 - 15:36
and you know disney came out september
  • 15:36 - 15:39
2014 so it was kind of new
  • 15:39 - 15:41
um especially on twitch and i just grew
  • 15:41 - 15:43
    a community there
  • 15:43 - 15:46
and uh i don't know i guess at the time
  • 15:46 - 15:48
there wasn't many new zealand streamers
  • 15:48 - 15:50
as well so i had the advantage of
  • 15:50 - 15:54
an interesting accent um of course um
  • 15:54 - 15:56
i was a female which we don't have like
  • 15:56 - 15:58
    a leg up but
  • 15:58 - 16:01
um it does it can help you know on a
  • 16:01 - 16:04
platform that's majority of male viewers
  • 16:04 - 16:05
    you know
  • 16:05 - 16:07
so you know from all these different
  • 16:07 - 16:09
angles you know i was just getting a lot
  • 16:09 - 16:11
of followers a lot of viewers
  • 16:11 - 16:13
and i really built up a really special
  • 16:13 - 16:14
    community
  • 16:14 - 16:16
and so from then i just decided you know
  • 16:16 - 16:18
what you know i was getting about a
  • 16:18 - 16:20
thousand viewers it was actually going
  • 16:20 - 16:21
    really successful
  • 16:21 - 16:24
but then i wanted to to go to variety it
  • 16:24 - 16:25
    was just i couldn't play
  • 16:25 - 16:27
this one game like day in day out day in
  • 16:27 - 16:28
    day out anymore
  • 16:28 - 16:31
even if it meant money you know i that's
  • 16:31 - 16:32
    just me i i
  • 16:32 - 16:35
have to be authentic uh to my core when
  • 16:35 - 16:36
    i can
  • 16:36 - 16:38
and so when i did that you know um my
  • 16:38 - 16:40
viewership went down but then it
  • 16:40 - 16:42
gradually built back up and then my
  • 16:42 - 16:43
    community was just
  • 16:43 - 16:46
this more like well-rounded community of
  • 16:46 - 16:46
    uh different
  • 16:46 - 16:48
interests but they could all come
  • 16:48 - 16:50
together to watch me play whatever game
  • 16:50 - 16:52
    that i wanted
  • 16:52 - 16:55
and uh in new zealand you know being in
  • 16:55 - 16:56
    a small country
  • 16:56 - 16:58
and at the time one of the very few
  • 16:58 - 17:00
    twitch streamers that was
  • 17:00 - 17:03
at that level of success i got media
  • 17:03 - 17:04
    attention um
  • 17:04 - 17:07
you know i was on a lot of articles i
  • 17:07 - 17:09
    was on some news channels
  • 17:09 - 17:12
um and it was just it was just really
  • 17:12 - 17:14
great that helped really elevate me and
  • 17:14 - 17:15
    the
  • 17:15 - 17:19
    um american saturated market
  • 17:19 - 17:22
and uh yeah no it's just i'm so thrilled
  • 17:22 - 17:24
that i've had such a successful twitch
  • 17:24 - 17:24
    career
  • 17:24 - 17:26
and um but you know now i really just
  • 17:26 - 17:27
    want to
  • 17:27 - 17:30
uh do that as a as a hobby and not rely
  • 17:30 - 17:32
    on it for money and
  • 17:32 - 17:35
just get started with my gaming studio
  • 17:35 - 17:36
    that makes sense
  • 17:36 - 17:37
now when you got media attention on the
  • 17:37 - 17:39
news how did that feel like you were
  • 17:39 - 17:42
    like i'm famous now yeah
  • 17:42 - 17:46
yeah it was uh it was crazy uh
  • 17:46 - 17:49
it's kind of you know my first sort of
  • 17:49 - 17:50
media attention was in the local
  • 17:50 - 17:52
    newspaper
  • 17:52 - 17:55
my dad actually uh he yeah
  • 17:55 - 17:57
he wrote it it was called the hawke's
  • 17:57 - 17:58
    bay today
  • 17:58 - 18:00
and they he wrote in and then they
  • 18:00 - 18:03
contacted me and did a piece on me
  • 18:03 - 18:06
and you know from there then other wider
  • 18:06 - 18:08
news outlets in the country were like
  • 18:08 - 18:10
hey like we want to do a piece on this
  • 18:10 - 18:12
girl and so that's sort of how it like
  • 18:12 - 18:13
    dominoed into
  • 18:13 - 18:16
into what it uh became for me and uh
  • 18:16 - 18:19
yeah now i i know a lot of journalists
  • 18:19 - 18:20
    you know
  • 18:20 - 18:22
it's just yeah it's it's crazy to think
  • 18:22 - 18:24
    about
  • 18:24 - 18:26
that's insane just just by playing games
  • 18:26 - 18:28
you can become like this big
  • 18:28 - 18:30
thing because five not even like i don't
  • 18:30 - 18:31
    know 23.
  • 18:31 - 18:33
like seven years ago eight years ago i
  • 18:33 - 18:35
was like there's no way people would be
  • 18:35 - 18:37
paid to play games i just watched them
  • 18:37 - 18:39
on youtube for fun but now it's like
  • 18:39 - 18:41
    literally there's community streamers
  • 18:41 - 18:42
    and all this
  • 18:42 - 18:44
twitch community out here just people
  • 18:44 - 18:45
    just sharing their experience just
  • 18:45 - 18:46
sharing games because not everybody can
  • 18:46 - 18:47
    play games
  • 18:47 - 18:49
they don't have the money to buy it or
  • 18:49 - 18:50
some people just want to watch people
  • 18:50 - 18:51
play it's more comforting or the
  • 18:51 - 18:52
    streamer themselves
  • 18:52 - 18:54
helps them get through tough times like
  • 18:54 - 18:55
happened to you and actually if i would
  • 18:55 - 18:57
like to get into at least how you
  • 18:57 - 18:59
how your mindset was during that hard
  • 18:59 - 19:02
times and how you got through it
  • 19:02 - 19:06
right wow so i guess those hard times
  • 19:06 - 19:08
like thinking back on it was very minor
  • 19:08 - 19:09
    i've been in some
  • 19:09 - 19:12
    uh worse times
  • 19:12 - 19:15
since then but you know from each
  • 19:15 - 19:17
bedtime i've been through you know video
  • 19:17 - 19:19
games has always been there for me but
  • 19:19 - 19:21
i've always been there for myself as
  • 19:21 - 19:22
    well
  • 19:22 - 19:25
and through each time you sort of learn
  • 19:25 - 19:26
    about you know
  • 19:26 - 19:28
how how best to get through it the next
  • 19:28 - 19:29
    time
  • 19:29 - 19:31
uh in case you know something happens to
  • 19:31 - 19:32
    you
  • 19:32 - 19:36
and um i guess that's yeah that's really
  • 19:36 - 19:38
video games is just like on the side of
  • 19:38 - 19:39
    that
  • 19:39 - 19:43
um really but you know for example
  • 19:43 - 19:45
um the biggest one in the last few years
  • 19:45 - 19:46
    was um
  • 19:46 - 19:50
i got married to another twitch streamer
  • 19:50 - 19:51
    in america
  • 19:51 - 19:54
and we have a child together and so i
  • 19:54 - 19:56
moved my life over there with a newborn
  • 19:56 - 19:57
    baby
  • 19:57 - 19:59
and it didn't work out unfortunately so
  • 19:59 - 20:01
i had to move all the way back to new
  • 20:01 - 20:02
    zealand
  • 20:02 - 20:05
uh from from america that's tough i was
  • 20:05 - 20:08
yeah an eight month old uh and then
  • 20:08 - 20:10
and then we've been separated for almost
  • 20:10 - 20:12
three years now so it's it's not too
  • 20:12 - 20:13
    recent but
  • 20:13 - 20:14
that was really hard for me to go
  • 20:14 - 20:16
    through as a solo parent
  • 20:16 - 20:18
and um you know at the time i was just a
  • 20:18 - 20:20
    twitch streamer um
  • 20:20 - 20:23
grieving didn't really know what to do
  • 20:23 - 20:25
    and then i
  • 20:25 - 20:27
you know really just catapult myself
  • 20:27 - 20:28
    into game development
  • 20:28 - 20:32
and three years on i'm here with my own
  • 20:32 - 20:34
indie studio and i'm just like i'm just
  • 20:34 - 20:37
    so proud of myself
  • 20:38 - 20:41
thank you yeah it's not easy doing what
  • 20:41 - 20:42
    you did but
  • 20:42 - 20:44
you he did it and that's all that
  • 20:44 - 20:46
    matters
  • 20:46 - 20:48
yeah i also want to hear a story about
  • 20:48 - 20:50
    your name the the twitch
  • 20:50 - 20:52
name you made it's laurie yeah how did
  • 20:52 - 20:53
    that
  • 20:53 - 20:56
hello so my first name's lorien
  • 20:56 - 20:59
    and my family name is
  • 20:59 - 21:03
lollipop lolly lol pup like there's
  • 21:03 - 21:05
different variations of it so i thought
  • 21:05 - 21:07
you know how can i combine lollipop
  • 21:07 - 21:11
and my name so i came up with lorry pop
  • 21:11 - 21:18
or lori pops i guess yeah oh i love it
  • 21:18 - 21:20
now for anybody who wanted to do like
  • 21:20 - 21:21
    twitch streaming
  • 21:21 - 21:23
like whether it's for just games or even
  • 21:23 - 21:25
    game development what
  • 21:25 - 21:28
advice would you give them um
  • 21:28 - 21:31
i would say that twitch streaming is
  • 21:31 - 21:34
actually a great segue to break into the
  • 21:34 - 21:37
game development industry uh it really
  • 21:37 - 21:39
is you know i don't think i could have
  • 21:39 - 21:41
got to where i am without all the
  • 21:41 - 21:43
networking and all the contacts and all
  • 21:43 - 21:45
the the friends that i've made in the
  • 21:45 - 21:46
    industry you know
  • 21:46 - 21:49
including video game studios and playing
  • 21:49 - 21:51
video games uh for them and
  • 21:51 - 21:53
and whatnot so it really is a great
  • 21:53 - 21:56
segue but to get into twitch i would say
  • 21:56 - 21:59
um just you know be yourself or offer
  • 21:59 - 22:00
    the most unique
  • 22:00 - 22:03
aspect of yourself um or if you're
  • 22:03 - 22:04
someone that likes to put on a persona
  • 22:04 - 22:06
that's fine but like really stick to
  • 22:06 - 22:07
    that
  • 22:07 - 22:09
and be consistent in the video game that
  • 22:09 - 22:11
you play i would say start off with one
  • 22:11 - 22:15
so your community has one core interest
  • 22:15 - 22:15
    to
  • 22:15 - 22:18
to come together and bond over and then
  • 22:18 - 22:20
from there if you want to do variety
  • 22:20 - 22:20
    then
  • 22:20 - 22:24
slowly branch out into variety also you
  • 22:24 - 22:26
know networking i will say that again
  • 22:26 - 22:26
    networking is
  • 22:26 - 22:29
so important and it is so valuable
  • 22:29 - 22:31
    especially if it's genuine networking
  • 22:31 - 22:32
    not just you know
  • 22:32 - 22:34
trying to trying to get a leg up in the
  • 22:34 - 22:37
    business you know making continuing
  • 22:37 - 22:39
um but those are probably the core core
  • 22:39 - 22:40
    aspects
  • 22:40 - 22:43
um of how i would say breaking into
  • 22:43 - 22:43
    twitch
  • 22:43 - 22:45
um game development wise you know
  • 22:45 - 22:46
    there's a lot of community
  • 22:46 - 22:49
and manager positions available in game
  • 22:49 - 22:51
dev now and a lot of people
  • 22:51 - 22:52
from the twitch scene are actually
  • 22:52 - 22:55
    stepping over into these roles
  • 22:55 - 22:57
um so i would recommend that as well you
  • 22:57 - 22:59
know just getting amongst that working
  • 22:59 - 23:01
    with these studios and
  • 23:01 - 23:03
you know they most likely already know
  • 23:03 - 23:05
who you are as well if you're a
  • 23:05 - 23:07
successful streamer and so you've got
  • 23:07 - 23:09
that sort of bonded respect there
  • 23:09 - 23:09
    already
  • 23:09 - 23:12
um yeah i know it's um
  • 23:12 - 23:14
my story is quite unique you know
  • 23:14 - 23:16
there's not many twitch streamers that
  • 23:16 - 23:17
    have
  • 23:17 - 23:19
gone this far into game development uh
  • 23:19 - 23:20
    or have been as
  • 23:20 - 23:23
aspirational as i have so i don't really
  • 23:23 - 23:25
have too many people to like
  • 23:25 - 23:27
converse with about it but i do have a
  • 23:27 - 23:29
few friends in community management so i
  • 23:29 - 23:31
    chat to them a lot
  • 23:31 - 23:32
yeah you're unique and that's good
  • 23:32 - 23:34
because it allows more people to follow
  • 23:34 - 23:36
    in your footsteps
  • 23:36 - 23:39
yeah i do hope you know through it's
  • 23:39 - 23:40
something i am with my twitch and my
  • 23:40 - 23:42
    online communities is i'm very
  • 23:42 - 23:44
    transparent about you know the
  • 23:44 - 23:46
issues i face my adversities you know of
  • 23:46 - 23:48
    being a solo parent
  • 23:48 - 23:50
and a woman in the industry as well i'm
  • 23:50 - 23:52
    very open about that stuff
  • 23:52 - 23:54
and uh you know i really care about
  • 23:54 - 23:56
    those uh human
  • 23:56 - 23:58
to human sort of genuine interactions uh
  • 23:58 - 23:59
    where you can
  • 23:59 - 24:02
you know inspire other people you they
  • 24:02 - 24:03
    could be like hey
  • 24:03 - 24:05
    this person's going through this i don't
  • 24:05 - 24:07
feel as alone you know i'm all about
  • 24:07 - 24:09
    that sort of thing so
  • 24:09 - 24:11
yeah this just felt like a natural step
  • 24:11 - 24:12
    for me to take
  • 24:12 - 24:14
making a studio that's inclusive diverse
  • 24:14 - 24:15
    and
  • 24:15 - 24:19
    focused on accessibility
  • 24:19 - 24:22
now the studio how did this come about
  • 24:22 - 24:25
so uh when i was sort of stagnant you
  • 24:25 - 24:28
know it was during a covert lockdown
  • 24:28 - 24:31
when redundancies were made at the
  • 24:31 - 24:32
company and i sort of thought you know
  • 24:32 - 24:34
    where are my next steps
  • 24:34 - 24:35
and once i decided you know what i want
  • 24:35 - 24:37
    to i want to
  • 24:37 - 24:39
make an indie studio you know something
  • 24:39 - 24:41
    small something a bit humble
  • 24:41 - 24:44
um and so i was like okay well what what
  • 24:44 - 24:46
can i name this company that is
  • 24:46 - 24:49
    a representative representative of
  • 24:49 - 24:53
being inclusive um and so i thought him
  • 24:53 - 24:54
and i just sort of brainstormed for a
  • 24:54 - 24:56
    while and i was like
  • 24:56 - 25:02
well everyone likes pie and then
  • 25:02 - 25:04
you know people people like food they
  • 25:04 - 25:06
like pie so i was like huh
  • 25:06 - 25:08
and then i tried to like uh search
  • 25:08 - 25:10
    different words for
  • 25:10 - 25:11
uh different colors you know and
  • 25:11 - 25:13
    chromatic um
  • 25:13 - 25:15
is one of those words that encompasses
  • 25:15 - 25:16
    um
  • 25:16 - 25:18
different uh color spectrums and and
  • 25:18 - 25:21
whatnot um so i was like okay well
  • 25:21 - 25:24
chromatic pie rolls off the tongue yes
  • 25:24 - 25:25
and so i had a vision in my head for the
  • 25:25 - 25:28
logo at that point and i was like huh i
  • 25:28 - 25:30
want to you know give this to somebody
  • 25:30 - 25:31
    to create
  • 25:31 - 25:34
pixel art her name is cast pixel on
  • 25:34 - 25:36
    twitter at car's pixel
  • 25:36 - 25:38
and i reached out to her and she's um
  • 25:38 - 25:39
    lgbtq
  • 25:39 - 25:42
plus as well and so i just felt like
  • 25:42 - 25:44
this perfect fit and what she came up
  • 25:44 - 25:46
with was just like the spinning image of
  • 25:46 - 25:48
what i had in my head and it just
  • 25:48 - 25:50
it just really clicked and so it just
  • 25:50 - 25:51
    yeah it had to be
  • 25:51 - 25:53
all encompassing of the the company's
  • 25:53 - 25:55
    vision
  • 25:55 - 25:57
so that vision you had is exactly what
  • 25:57 - 26:00
you have nowadays with the uh
  • 26:00 - 26:03
red yellow green blue purple pie we're
  • 26:03 - 26:05
all slices from the same place
  • 26:05 - 26:08
    yeah yeah that's exactly it
  • 26:08 - 26:11
thank you no problem and then i saw you
  • 26:11 - 26:12
    also uh
  • 26:12 - 26:15
made a real version of it that is
  • 26:15 - 26:16
    incredible
  • 26:16 - 26:20
so what type of pie is it is it
  • 26:20 - 26:23
is made from it's made from sago and
  • 26:23 - 26:24
    custard
  • 26:24 - 26:27
so if you don't know what sega is uh
  • 26:27 - 26:29
    it's i guess it's
  • 26:29 - 26:30
you know everyone knows what rice but
  • 26:30 - 26:33
you know what rice pudding is yeah
  • 26:33 - 26:34
yeah so it's kind of got the same
  • 26:34 - 26:36
    texture as rice pudding
  • 26:36 - 26:39
    except it's sago and it's um it's a
  • 26:39 - 26:41
similar texture to rice you know it's
  • 26:41 - 26:41
    sort of
  • 26:41 - 26:44
uh it's sort of firm but sort of soft at
  • 26:44 - 26:46
the same time and so and it's flavorless
  • 26:46 - 26:47
    so
  • 26:47 - 26:49
yeah say go and custard i wanted to make
  • 26:49 - 26:51
sure it was like bulky like the picture
  • 26:51 - 26:53
and uh yeah no it just sort of came to
  • 26:53 - 26:54
    life it was
  • 26:54 - 26:56
you know i thought it would be a neat
  • 26:56 - 26:57
launching thing you know to have it on
  • 26:57 - 26:59
    the website at launch
  • 26:59 - 27:01
yeah that's awesome i was like no way
  • 27:01 - 27:02
you made the pie come to life
  • 27:02 - 27:04
now how long did it take you to make the
  • 27:04 - 27:05
pie come to light like did you spend
  • 27:05 - 27:07
    time like studying recipes
  • 27:07 - 27:09
or did you already like do you bake a
  • 27:09 - 27:10
lot so did you really know how to like
  • 27:10 - 27:11
    make a pie
  • 27:11 - 27:14
i i don't do a lot of baking um but
  • 27:14 - 27:16
you know i was thinking back to the time
  • 27:16 - 27:19
i made my very first pumpkin pie
  • 27:19 - 27:23
you know because uh america yes
  • 27:23 - 27:24
so i was like you know what if i can
  • 27:24 - 27:26
make pumpkin pie for the first time i
  • 27:26 - 27:29
think i can experiment with this so
  • 27:29 - 27:32
i think for me you know i the blog
  • 27:32 - 27:34
is actually on the website creditpie.com
  • 27:34 - 27:36
i actually have listed you know how the
  • 27:36 - 27:37
    steps and
  • 27:37 - 27:39
what i did to make the pie and my my
  • 27:39 - 27:41
three-year-old son helped me which was
  • 27:41 - 27:42
    incredible
  • 27:42 - 27:44
um but yeah i know i was just
  • 27:44 - 27:45
experimenting it took a two to
  • 27:45 - 27:47
a few different tries with a friend as
  • 27:47 - 27:49
    well to get it right
  • 27:49 - 27:52
and uh yeah i finally just just landed
  • 27:52 - 27:52
    on
  • 27:52 - 27:55
    a decent one but
  • 27:55 - 27:59
yeah it was it was fun yeah and then how
  • 27:59 - 28:00
did you get the colors to be
  • 28:00 - 28:02
perfect like that because i would
  • 28:02 - 28:04
imagine i had to mix them in different
  • 28:04 - 28:06
walls yeah i had to like
  • 28:06 - 28:08
    segregate their colors into different
  • 28:08 - 28:09
    bowls and add in
  • 28:09 - 28:12
the right amount of food coloring and
  • 28:12 - 28:14
    and then just carefully like
  • 28:14 - 28:17
make them into like this circle i have
  • 28:17 - 28:18
    an eye for detail so
  • 28:18 - 28:21
this really helped me in this regard
  • 28:21 - 28:24
oh i see you made one version it just
  • 28:24 - 28:26
didn't look like the way you wanted to
  • 28:26 - 28:28
    work out yeah yeah
  • 28:28 - 28:32
    wow that's that's unique
  • 28:32 - 28:35
that's amazing i want to try some now so
  • 28:35 - 28:36
like you're saying this soon they're
  • 28:36 - 28:37
    going to have over like
  • 28:37 - 28:40
you can buy some or just just to make
  • 28:40 - 28:41
the recipe for all the recipes that was
  • 28:41 - 28:42
    just like a
  • 28:42 - 28:44
novelty thing you know something fun to
  • 28:44 - 28:47
put out there that would make people
  • 28:47 - 28:50
    uh interested yeah wow
  • 28:50 - 28:53
so then you started the the chromatic
  • 28:53 - 28:54
    pie
  • 28:54 - 28:57
in october of last year right yes yes
  • 28:57 - 29:00
so what was the process like leading up
  • 29:00 - 29:01
    to that moment
  • 29:01 - 29:04
like the technical stuff so you came up
  • 29:04 - 29:05
    with your idea
  • 29:05 - 29:08
what did you do next um
  • 29:08 - 29:11
    so i i didn't launch the studio
  • 29:11 - 29:14
without having a game in mind so what i
  • 29:14 - 29:15
    did was
  • 29:15 - 29:18
really just try to detail as much as i
  • 29:18 - 29:20
can about a video game idea
  • 29:20 - 29:23
and really just go through and make sure
  • 29:23 - 29:24
    that
  • 29:24 - 29:25
it's something that i'm happy with
  • 29:25 - 29:27
before i can hand it off to
  • 29:27 - 29:31
uh developers to to bring it to life so
  • 29:31 - 29:33
so that is something i worked on there
  • 29:33 - 29:35
writing some documentation but also you
  • 29:35 - 29:38
know the business side of things like
  • 29:38 - 29:41
    incorporating the company uh getting
  • 29:41 - 29:43
those bank accounts up and running
  • 29:43 - 29:46
um you know my my accountant that does
  • 29:46 - 29:47
    all my lorry pops
  • 29:47 - 29:51
uh content creation stuff he's doing my
  • 29:51 - 29:53
chromatic pie stuff and he's just
  • 29:53 - 29:54
    absolutely amazing so
  • 29:54 - 29:56
you know i made sure that i i set all
  • 29:56 - 29:58
these important things up you know but
  • 29:58 - 30:01
pretty base level uh business stuff
  • 30:01 - 30:05
and so i did that and yeah
  • 30:05 - 30:07
i guess you know just making sure the
  • 30:07 - 30:09
website was up and running i tried to
  • 30:09 - 30:10
    make the website uh
  • 30:10 - 30:12
as accessible as possible i tried to
  • 30:12 - 30:14
make it um easy to read
  • 30:14 - 30:17
easy to to navigate and i was actually
  • 30:17 - 30:19
really surprised because you know i
  • 30:19 - 30:21
didn't have any help with the website's
  • 30:21 - 30:23
design i just went on squarespace and
  • 30:23 - 30:25
picked a layout and then adjusted it
  • 30:25 - 30:26
    from there
  • 30:26 - 30:29
but when i went onto this accessibility
  • 30:29 - 30:32
tool website you actually enter in your
  • 30:32 - 30:34
website and it tells you how
  • 30:34 - 30:35
accessible it is and where you need to
  • 30:35 - 30:38
    improve so i actually got i think a 97
  • 30:38 - 30:39
    percent rating
  • 30:39 - 30:43
um and yeah so i was like wow like i
  • 30:43 - 30:44
    actually
  • 30:44 - 30:47
you know my um my intuition really
  • 30:47 - 30:50
paid off there i you know i did it all
  • 30:50 - 30:50
    quite well
  • 30:50 - 30:52
um so i was really proud of that you
  • 30:52 - 30:54
know and just yeah making sure i had all
  • 30:54 - 30:56
these things done like the the fun thing
  • 30:56 - 30:58
    like the pie
  • 30:58 - 31:01
um and i've got some hats as well
  • 31:01 - 31:04
some keratic pie caps and bucket hats
  • 31:04 - 31:04
    too
  • 31:04 - 31:06
so i was just yeah organizing quite a
  • 31:06 - 31:08
few things behind the scene to
  • 31:08 - 31:12
make the launch as as impressionable as
  • 31:12 - 31:13
    possible
  • 31:13 - 31:16
oh i see you get the cp bucket head and
  • 31:16 - 31:18
    the cp brush cotton cap
  • 31:18 - 31:20
for the two different hats that's so
  • 31:20 - 31:23
    cool that's awesome
  • 31:23 - 31:26
i need to get myself one there
  • 31:26 - 31:29
so i see you also so the game you work
  • 31:29 - 31:32
on is a unity 2d platform game
  • 31:32 - 31:35
    yes details
  • 31:35 - 31:38
are just keeping it all secret yeah it's
  • 31:38 - 31:39
    a secret for now
  • 31:39 - 31:42
uh so yeah it is a 2d pixel platformer
  • 31:42 - 31:43
    on unity
  • 31:43 - 31:46
    um it is
  • 31:46 - 31:48
yeah i don't really know how much i can
  • 31:48 - 31:49
    say about it without
  • 31:49 - 31:52
without giving it away i would say that
  • 31:52 - 31:53
    it isn't
  • 31:53 - 31:56
    like any other platformer um
  • 31:56 - 31:59
that you know of or that you've played a
  • 31:59 - 32:02
specifically designed a core element and
  • 32:02 - 32:04
actually two core elements of the game
  • 32:04 - 32:06
this is what you want but you know when
  • 32:06 - 32:07
    you're
  • 32:07 - 32:09
in the game design you want it to uh be
  • 32:09 - 32:11
    different from
  • 32:11 - 32:14
other games and to some degree so i've
  • 32:14 - 32:16
got two core elements that'll really
  • 32:16 - 32:17
    make people
  • 32:17 - 32:19
think you know wow this is interesting
  • 32:19 - 32:20
    well that's really
  • 32:20 - 32:22
that's really fun while this works out
  • 32:22 - 32:23
really good you know so that was really
  • 32:23 - 32:25
important to me to make the game
  • 32:25 - 32:27
um stand out from the crowd and have a
  • 32:27 - 32:29
    chance of of being
  • 32:29 - 32:31
more successful than it would if it was
  • 32:31 - 32:32
    just another
  • 32:32 - 32:36
2d platformer yeah and then for the
  • 32:36 - 32:38
development team is it how many people
  • 32:38 - 32:40
    is it or
  • 32:40 - 32:43
    yeah is
  • 32:43 - 32:45
would you be surprised it's just me
  • 32:45 - 32:47
    right now
  • 32:47 - 32:49
so i've done everything right now
  • 32:49 - 32:50
    however um
  • 32:50 - 32:52
i have been in talks with uh two
  • 32:52 - 32:54
investors that are really interested in
  • 32:54 - 32:56
    coming on board
  • 32:56 - 32:58
that is another thing you know indeed
  • 32:58 - 33:00
and these studios really struggle with
  • 33:00 - 33:00
    finding
  • 33:00 - 33:04
    funding um and finding
  • 33:04 - 33:06
you know just that support that you
  • 33:06 - 33:08
really need so i've been lucky with my
  • 33:08 - 33:11
with my social media presence and status
  • 33:11 - 33:12
    and a lot of people
  • 33:12 - 33:14
know about being new zealand and
  • 33:14 - 33:16
    overseas as well
  • 33:16 - 33:19
and you know an investor one of the
  • 33:19 - 33:21
    first investors that found me
  • 33:21 - 33:24
found me on twitch and he just tuned in
  • 33:24 - 33:24
    to
  • 33:24 - 33:28
watch my uh the last of us part two
  • 33:28 - 33:30
uh gameplay and what i thought of the
  • 33:30 - 33:31
game and i just happened to be talking
  • 33:31 - 33:34
about chromatic pie at the time
  • 33:34 - 33:35
and then he reached out to me on
  • 33:35 - 33:37
linkedin and then we started talking
  • 33:37 - 33:38
and you know those sort of things are
  • 33:38 - 33:40
like crazy you know like what if he
  • 33:40 - 33:42
tuned in at a different time i would
  • 33:42 - 33:43
    have missed that opportunity
  • 33:43 - 33:47
uh completely you know that's like
  • 33:47 - 33:50
yeah yeah it definitely is so so that
  • 33:50 - 33:51
was sort of how that came about
  • 33:51 - 33:55
and i knew that my business
  • 33:55 - 33:58
uh was unique from all others you know
  • 33:58 - 34:00
from conception what it's all about the
  • 34:00 - 34:02
    logo the name and everything
  • 34:02 - 34:05
i knew that i could grab attention from
  • 34:05 - 34:06
    current you know
  • 34:06 - 34:08
future investors that way um also with
  • 34:08 - 34:10
my status in the country and
  • 34:10 - 34:13
globally in the industry and so another
  • 34:13 - 34:16
investor uh which i i won't name any of
  • 34:16 - 34:16
    them
  • 34:16 - 34:18
    but the second investor that's
  • 34:18 - 34:20
interested is from america and i've
  • 34:20 - 34:21
    known
  • 34:21 - 34:24
them for a very long time and
  • 34:24 - 34:26
you know they're entrepreneurs and you
  • 34:26 - 34:27
    just never know
  • 34:27 - 34:30
where your contacts are gonna like link
  • 34:30 - 34:31
    into each other
  • 34:31 - 34:34
or anything like that but i've actually
  • 34:34 - 34:38
    enrolled myself into an incubation
  • 34:38 - 34:38
    program
  • 34:38 - 34:41
a business incubation program that goes
  • 34:41 - 34:41
    for uh
  • 34:41 - 34:44
three months to 12 months so i'm really
  • 34:44 - 34:46
just trying to do all these things
  • 34:46 - 34:46
    myself
  • 34:46 - 34:49
to make sure that um i have enough money
  • 34:49 - 34:51
    to hire people
  • 34:51 - 34:53
when the time comes that i can be a good
  • 34:53 - 34:54
    boss
  • 34:54 - 34:56
that i can really lift up the company
  • 34:56 - 34:58
    and ensure its success
  • 34:58 - 35:00
and so yeah i really needed to do all
  • 35:00 - 35:01
    this
  • 35:01 - 35:04
ground level work first before i could
  • 35:04 - 35:07
get anybody else on board with me
  • 35:07 - 35:09
oh yeah that's key because you need to
  • 35:09 - 35:10
make sure you're all set and prepared to
  • 35:10 - 35:12
launch your business to success and
  • 35:12 - 35:13
    that's another thing
  • 35:13 - 35:15
for any all the students listening that
  • 35:15 - 35:16
    like you must
  • 35:16 - 35:18
focus on the small things you don't
  • 35:18 - 35:19
think it's important but it becomes
  • 35:19 - 35:20
    important like
  • 35:20 - 35:22
lawyers um having like legal stuff
  • 35:22 - 35:25
taking care of the bank accounts
  • 35:25 - 35:27
the logo on the website all other stuff
  • 35:27 - 35:28
is like cool and nice but there's a lot
  • 35:28 - 35:30
of like different things too that's
  • 35:30 - 35:32
really important and then you know
  • 35:32 - 35:33
    you're killing it so
  • 35:33 - 35:35
congratulations yeah i do want to say
  • 35:35 - 35:37
    that um you know
  • 35:37 - 35:40
game developers uh you know they can
  • 35:40 - 35:40
    make
  • 35:40 - 35:43
amazing games but they don't always make
  • 35:43 - 35:44
    great business people
  • 35:44 - 35:47
or great managers or great studio owners
  • 35:47 - 35:48
so that's one thing i really want to
  • 35:48 - 35:50
emphasize is you really need to educate
  • 35:50 - 35:53
yourself on how to run a business
  • 35:53 - 35:55
um doesn't matter how talented you are
  • 35:55 - 35:56
    at
  • 35:56 - 35:58
making a game you really need to get the
  • 35:58 - 35:59
    business side so for me
  • 35:59 - 36:02
business side comes more naturally to me
  • 36:02 - 36:03
    and
  • 36:03 - 36:06
game development is more secondary so
  • 36:06 - 36:10
yeah i would say that nice and so for
  • 36:10 - 36:11
with the little bit that you are doing
  • 36:11 - 36:14
are you like doing the game design part
  • 36:14 - 36:14
    of it
  • 36:14 - 36:16
planning out blah blah blah making
  • 36:16 - 36:18
    prototypes drawing stuff
  • 36:18 - 36:19
or you just come up at the end and
  • 36:19 - 36:20
eventually going to get everyone else to
  • 36:20 - 36:22
    like build your vision
  • 36:22 - 36:24
    i've written some because i was a
  • 36:24 - 36:25
    producer for the
  • 36:25 - 36:27
design department you know as i said
  • 36:27 - 36:29
like i hold on to things and i'm like a
  • 36:29 - 36:30
    sponge so
  • 36:30 - 36:34
um i saw you know the documentation um
  • 36:34 - 36:36
the you know the prototypes that they
  • 36:36 - 36:37
    had made you know
  • 36:37 - 36:40
just everything um i really took it on
  • 36:40 - 36:42
    board and so i'm doing
  • 36:42 - 36:45
uh what i can outside of the unity
  • 36:45 - 36:46
    engine at the moment
  • 36:46 - 36:49
so once i hire people they will be
  • 36:49 - 36:51
    actually creating the prototype
  • 36:51 - 36:53
for me on a contract um and then we'll
  • 36:53 - 36:56
go and secure more funding if we haven't
  • 36:56 - 36:56
    already
  • 36:56 - 36:58
and then i'll officially employ them if
  • 36:58 - 37:00
they want to stay on board
  • 37:00 - 37:03
and then hire like a wider team so
  • 37:03 - 37:04
that's sort of my game plan at the
  • 37:04 - 37:06
moment but as far as the game design
  • 37:06 - 37:07
    goes
  • 37:07 - 37:09
uh you know i've designed the the sort
  • 37:09 - 37:10
    of
  • 37:10 - 37:12
vision for the intro of the game the
  • 37:12 - 37:14
    cutscenes
  • 37:14 - 37:17
uh the first uh narration of the game
  • 37:17 - 37:20
and you know who you interact with as a
  • 37:20 - 37:22
player first and i've i've sort of laid
  • 37:22 - 37:24
out their vision so it's easy to sort of
  • 37:24 - 37:25
    uh pivot off
  • 37:25 - 37:28
when it does come to putting it um into
  • 37:28 - 37:29
    a prototype
  • 37:29 - 37:32
wow that's incredible and for anybody
  • 37:32 - 37:33
    who doesn't really understand
  • 37:33 - 37:36
like the process that it takes how long
  • 37:36 - 37:38
has have you been like designing this
  • 37:38 - 37:39
game and it's been in your mind and
  • 37:39 - 37:42
and then how do you well first answer
  • 37:42 - 37:43
    that and we'll get to
  • 37:43 - 37:46
a little bit more into it okay so as of
  • 37:46 - 37:47
    this year
  • 37:47 - 37:50
i've gone full time into working on the
  • 37:50 - 37:51
    business
  • 37:51 - 37:54
last year was more sort of part-time
  • 37:54 - 37:56
um you know because last year was quite
  • 37:56 - 37:58
tough for everybody and i was still
  • 37:58 - 38:00
    streaming and whatnot so
  • 38:00 - 38:04
    um i would say from
  • 38:04 - 38:06
oh i don't really know exactly when i
  • 38:06 - 38:08
    started designing my game
  • 38:08 - 38:11
i had a game idea that had the same core
  • 38:11 - 38:14
mechanics but the story was different
  • 38:14 - 38:17
and i decided that i needed to iterate
  • 38:17 - 38:17
    on the story
  • 38:17 - 38:19
it was actually going to be about uh
  • 38:19 - 38:21
    mental health
  • 38:21 - 38:23
and so i thought you know what that's
  • 38:23 - 38:24
    actually
  • 38:24 - 38:26
i want to do that sometime but i think
  • 38:26 - 38:28
as a first title it's probably a bit too
  • 38:28 - 38:29
    much
  • 38:29 - 38:31
um you know those shoes are really big
  • 38:31 - 38:33
to fill and you have to do it right so i
  • 38:33 - 38:36
sort of was like okay i'll bench that
  • 38:36 - 38:39
for another game and then i decided to
  • 38:39 - 38:40
make a different story revolving around
  • 38:40 - 38:42
    these core mechanics again
  • 38:42 - 38:44
and then i was so much happier with this
  • 38:44 - 38:45
    design so
  • 38:45 - 38:48
there has been a second iteration of the
  • 38:48 - 38:49
    game already
  • 38:49 - 38:52
um that just you know this year i'm
  • 38:52 - 38:53
    hoping to
  • 38:53 - 38:56
get the prototype done around about
  • 38:56 - 38:58
    mid-year
  • 38:58 - 39:01
and i'm aiming to release the game 2023
  • 39:01 - 39:04
possibly 2024 so just spend it at two or
  • 39:04 - 39:05
    three years of the game
  • 39:05 - 39:08
um you know for chromatic pie i don't
  • 39:08 - 39:08
    see
  • 39:08 - 39:12
the studio turning into a big um
  • 39:12 - 39:15
    realistic graphics uh big aaa
  • 39:15 - 39:19
sort of sort of company i want to work
  • 39:19 - 39:19
    on
  • 39:19 - 39:23
smaller games so the company can work on
  • 39:23 - 39:24
    different ips
  • 39:24 - 39:27
    at the same time and
  • 39:27 - 39:29
yeah hopefully raking more money that
  • 39:29 - 39:30
    way than you know spending
  • 39:30 - 39:33
five to six seven eight years on one
  • 39:33 - 39:34
    title
  • 39:34 - 39:36
you know that's pretty tough it's pretty
  • 39:36 - 39:37
    tough on the team
  • 39:37 - 39:41
and i i am so wowed by the companies
  • 39:41 - 39:42
    that that do that
  • 39:42 - 39:45
but i've also seen the the struggles and
  • 39:45 - 39:47
    the many struggles
  • 39:47 - 39:49
of you know going through that so for me
  • 39:49 - 39:51
i want to have small teams working on
  • 39:51 - 39:52
    smaller games
  • 39:52 - 39:55
um and yet run the company that way
  • 39:55 - 39:57
that's smart we have a saying in this
  • 39:57 - 39:59
podcast where it's like don't make wow
  • 39:59 - 40:02
don't make the biggest thing possible
  • 40:02 - 40:03
    make small games
  • 40:03 - 40:05
and then eventually you can make that
  • 40:05 - 40:06
    yeah
  • 40:06 - 40:09
just down the line yeah yeah exactly
  • 40:09 - 40:11
and so then when you're now designing
  • 40:11 - 40:13
and thinking about this game do you have
  • 40:13 - 40:13
    like
  • 40:13 - 40:16
as like a setup that you have to design
  • 40:16 - 40:18
the game like do you have like a board
  • 40:18 - 40:21
    nodes flow charts yeah so
  • 40:21 - 40:25
yep so i have a whiteboard which i laid
  • 40:25 - 40:25
    out
  • 40:25 - 40:28
my sort of uh the steps to
  • 40:28 - 40:32
the game's completion and then involved
  • 40:32 - 40:33
in the earlier days like launching the
  • 40:33 - 40:34
    website
  • 40:34 - 40:37
um completing the business plan uh you
  • 40:37 - 40:38
    know all these
  • 40:38 - 40:40
little all this this little road map of
  • 40:40 - 40:41
    those sort of things
  • 40:41 - 40:44
um so i'm a visual person and i need to
  • 40:44 - 40:45
you know have that sort of
  • 40:45 - 40:47
vision that's that's always there for me
  • 40:47 - 40:50
to look at uh so i had that i've also
  • 40:50 - 40:51
    got a compendium
  • 40:51 - 40:54
that's filled with you know my ideas
  • 40:54 - 40:56
meeting notes from the meetings that i
  • 40:56 - 40:59
have being a producer you know i've
  • 40:59 - 41:01
i really learned a lot of skills with
  • 41:01 - 41:03
taking down notes and referring to them
  • 41:03 - 41:04
    later
  • 41:04 - 41:07
so i found that yeah compendium was very
  • 41:07 - 41:08
    helpful
  • 41:08 - 41:11
um what else have i got i've got a book
  • 41:11 - 41:13
    it's actually just like a i don't know
  • 41:13 - 41:14
if i have it here with me at the moment
  • 41:14 - 41:15
    but
  • 41:15 - 41:18
    it's just like a a 2b 2b
  • 41:18 - 41:21
i think a red book and i just scribbled
  • 41:21 - 41:22
in it all these game ideas you know on
  • 41:22 - 41:24
every single page just like leaving my
  • 41:24 - 41:25
    brain just like
  • 41:25 - 41:29
fight to the paper and um
  • 41:29 - 41:31
nice and so like that really helped me
  • 41:31 - 41:33
like just get all the creativity out and
  • 41:33 - 41:35
then from there i put it into like a
  • 41:35 - 41:37
    more tidier format
  • 41:37 - 41:40
um so i am someone that doesn't really
  • 41:40 - 41:42
    like to
  • 41:42 - 41:44
write all my ideas digitally from the
  • 41:44 - 41:46
get go i'm more of someone that likes
  • 41:46 - 41:49
pencil and paper you know pen on paper
  • 41:49 - 41:52
and then yeah go from there um
  • 41:52 - 41:54
you know i mean the kids these days that
  • 41:54 - 41:56
are growing up they're gonna be more
  • 41:56 - 41:57
    digital you know
  • 41:57 - 41:59
put it all in there but for me you know
  • 41:59 - 42:01
i it helps my creativity when i hold
  • 42:01 - 42:03
like a pin in my hand
  • 42:03 - 42:06
um and you know i've got a uh a
  • 42:06 - 42:07
    microsoft
  • 42:07 - 42:10
uh laptop that microsoft kindly uh
  • 42:10 - 42:12
    gifted to me
  • 42:12 - 42:14
for the use of chromatic pie which was
  • 42:14 - 42:15
    amazing
  • 42:15 - 42:17
thank you again if you're listening but
  • 42:17 - 42:18
    so i use that
  • 42:18 - 42:21
as a as a dedicated uh device for
  • 42:21 - 42:23
chromatic pie and it's strong enough to
  • 42:23 - 42:24
    run
  • 42:24 - 42:27
unity it comes off as a tablet as well
  • 42:27 - 42:30
uh so i can draw on it and it's just
  • 42:30 - 42:30
    yeah
  • 42:30 - 42:32
yeah you really need to surround
  • 42:32 - 42:34
    yourself with um these different
  • 42:34 - 42:38
um pieces that allow you to incorporate
  • 42:38 - 42:39
    them separately
  • 42:39 - 42:42
um and put them into a computer when
  • 42:42 - 42:44
    you're done
  • 42:44 - 42:45
and do you have anything running on
  • 42:45 - 42:47
unity yet like a little like
  • 42:47 - 42:51
    little moving flick blob
  • 42:52 - 42:55
yeah so i i we i started learning about
  • 42:55 - 42:56
    unity
  • 42:56 - 42:59
uh last year because the studio i worked
  • 42:59 - 43:01
    at worked inside unreal
  • 43:01 - 43:03
so unity was something new for me but i
  • 43:03 - 43:04
    i knew that
  • 43:04 - 43:07
working on a platformer in unity was was
  • 43:07 - 43:09
    quite beneficial
  • 43:09 - 43:11
so i went through their sort of
  • 43:11 - 43:13
tutorials and at the moment i'm still
  • 43:13 - 43:16
um gaining a deeper understanding on how
  • 43:16 - 43:16
    to
  • 43:16 - 43:19
uh how to work it there's a youtube
  • 43:19 - 43:20
    channel called bracky's
  • 43:20 - 43:22
i don't know if you know that youtube
  • 43:22 - 43:24
channel yeah so they've been super
  • 43:24 - 43:25
    helpful
  • 43:25 - 43:27
and they made a video i think a few
  • 43:27 - 43:28
months ago or something that they're
  • 43:28 - 43:31
like they're gone they're like goodbye
  • 43:31 - 43:36
i was like no i can use you
  • 43:36 - 43:38
yeah but you know there's heaps on there
  • 43:38 - 43:40
so i'm all about uh self
  • 43:40 - 43:42
you know teaching yourself uh motivating
  • 43:42 - 43:43
    yourself
  • 43:43 - 43:45
um actually another important aspect i
  • 43:45 - 43:47
    didn't tell you uh
  • 43:47 - 43:49
with you know starting chromatic pies
  • 43:49 - 43:51
i've actually been listening to a lot of
  • 43:51 - 43:52
    audio books
  • 43:52 - 43:55
on uh entrepreneurship and on business
  • 43:55 - 43:55
    and on
  • 43:55 - 43:58
um finally really who's your favorite or
  • 43:58 - 44:00
    what's your favorite book
  • 44:00 - 44:03
so most of them are uh written by women
  • 44:03 - 44:04
and they're read by women because i
  • 44:04 - 44:06
    really do want to
  • 44:06 - 44:09
listen you know and feel related to
  • 44:09 - 44:12
in that regard so i don't i i've got my
  • 44:12 - 44:13
phone in here i'll have to
  • 44:13 - 44:15
reference to my phone because my memory
  • 44:15 - 44:18
is uh is not the best
  • 44:18 - 44:21
it's all good so i've listened to
  • 44:21 - 44:24
    uh unapologetically ambitious by shelly
  • 44:24 - 44:26
    archambault
  • 44:26 - 44:28
    the entrepreneur roller coaster by
  • 44:28 - 44:30
darren hardy that was written by
  • 44:30 - 44:34
a male um culture wins by
  • 44:34 - 44:37
william van der blumen so i've listened
  • 44:37 - 44:41
to quite a few and also some on just
  • 44:41 - 44:42
video games and making video games in
  • 44:42 - 44:44
    general and they're super helpful
  • 44:44 - 44:47
you know they're just i think people
  • 44:47 - 44:48
    should really
  • 44:48 - 44:50
turn to self-help i don't know is there
  • 44:50 - 44:52
    a stigma around like
  • 44:52 - 44:53
self-help you know that it doesn't
  • 44:53 - 44:55
    actually work because
  • 44:55 - 44:57
i feel like that it's true but for me
  • 44:57 - 45:00
    like i've actually absorbed everything
  • 45:00 - 45:02
as much as i can and it's it's great
  • 45:02 - 45:04
yeah you're like my life is awesome i
  • 45:04 - 45:06
    don't know
  • 45:06 - 45:08
but it's working for me no i self-help
  • 45:08 - 45:10
    is interesting because it
  • 45:10 - 45:13
it does work it essentially i think
  • 45:13 - 45:14
    self-help
  • 45:14 - 45:17
is what they teach you is pretty much
  • 45:17 - 45:18
    that's it like
  • 45:18 - 45:20
so if one person tells you well you know
  • 45:20 - 45:21
how to do this it's not
  • 45:21 - 45:23
you don't need to read 30 or 40 other
  • 45:23 - 45:24
books because they're all going to
  • 45:24 - 45:25
basically tell you the same thing in
  • 45:25 - 45:26
    their own way
  • 45:26 - 45:27
so i think that's where the stigma comes
  • 45:27 - 45:28
where it's just like you get in the
  • 45:28 - 45:30
cycle you keep reading the same thing
  • 45:30 - 45:31
over and over and you feel motivated but
  • 45:31 - 45:33
it's like all right you got the message
  • 45:33 - 45:36
now go make it happen go do your thing
  • 45:36 - 45:36
    whoever
  • 45:36 - 45:38
told you doesn't matter but just go i
  • 45:38 - 45:40
think that's where the signal comes from
  • 45:40 - 45:41
and just disunderstand and the whole
  • 45:41 - 45:43
gurus online there's a lot of people
  • 45:43 - 45:44
    online
  • 45:44 - 45:47
who destroy the self-help image they
  • 45:47 - 45:49
don't know what they're talking about or
  • 45:49 - 45:51
are they just starting their careers and
  • 45:51 - 45:52
    it's like maybe
  • 45:52 - 45:53
you shouldn't be the one telling me how
  • 45:53 - 45:55
    to get my life
  • 45:55 - 45:56
like so that's where the stigma i think
  • 45:56 - 45:58
comes from but i i think it works
  • 45:58 - 45:59
    perfectly fine
  • 45:59 - 46:00
and then actually this is another good
  • 46:00 - 46:02
book you should read it's called
  • 46:02 - 46:04
    undaunted by characters
  • 46:04 - 46:06
i've been thinking about picking that
  • 46:06 - 46:07
one up yeah you sure it's amazing
  • 46:07 - 46:09
    it's it's incredible she's an amazing
  • 46:09 - 46:10
person actually i did the podcaster
  • 46:10 - 46:12
    yesterday
  • 46:12 - 46:15
where we talked about yeah so again she
  • 46:15 - 46:16
    just has this
  • 46:16 - 46:18
uh mentality of just like whatever is in
  • 46:18 - 46:20
    front of me that's okay
  • 46:20 - 46:22
i will get through it this might not
  • 46:22 - 46:23
work what can we do and that's one of my
  • 46:23 - 46:24
    favorite quotes
  • 46:24 - 46:26
look it's like yeah you're right like
  • 46:26 - 46:27
okay this obstacles in my way i can't do
  • 46:27 - 46:28
    this
  • 46:28 - 46:31
but what can i do besides all that what
  • 46:31 - 46:33
can we do to go around it to make it
  • 46:33 - 46:33
    happen because
  • 46:33 - 46:35
why not let's just let's see what
  • 46:35 - 46:37
happens you can try she says
  • 46:37 - 46:39
the one thing that really is important
  • 46:39 - 46:41
to her and what everybody should like
  • 46:41 - 46:43
take from the podcast is just try
  • 46:43 - 46:45
just try it just try that studio you
  • 46:45 - 46:47
want to make just try to make that game
  • 46:47 - 46:48
    just try to do that
  • 46:48 - 46:50
to get la's just try you'll never know
  • 46:50 - 46:51
what could happen you might succeed if
  • 46:51 - 46:52
    you don't you learn
  • 46:52 - 46:55
you do when you learn exactly so that's
  • 46:55 - 46:57
    what i take from self-help and it's
  • 46:57 - 46:58
    helped me too like i
  • 46:58 - 47:00
i don't know what to tell people i know
  • 47:00 - 47:01
    i'm sorry
  • 47:01 - 47:03
to work for you i mean i didn't spend
  • 47:03 - 47:04
like ten thousand dollars on things so
  • 47:04 - 47:06
that might be the thing too
  • 47:06 - 47:07
i just buy the books and then listen to
  • 47:07 - 47:09
    the free stuff online and
  • 47:09 - 47:12
so yep exactly yeah no it's um they've
  • 47:12 - 47:12
    been
  • 47:12 - 47:14
extremely valuable and i think i will
  • 47:14 - 47:16
always listen you know i've got the
  • 47:16 - 47:17
    monthly
  • 47:17 - 47:20
    um audible um
  • 47:20 - 47:22
ship uh what do you call it um
  • 47:22 - 47:23
    subscription
  • 47:23 - 47:25
so i'm always going to be reading
  • 47:25 - 47:27
    because of that
  • 47:27 - 47:29
i love reading reading is so much fun
  • 47:29 - 47:31
    you learn so much
  • 47:31 - 47:32
i feel like nobody reads anymore i don't
  • 47:32 - 47:34
know if that's just me but i don't know
  • 47:34 - 47:36
well for me i listen to the audiobook so
  • 47:36 - 47:38
i can like do my dishes like i have to
  • 47:38 - 47:40
multitask i don't want to like
  • 47:40 - 47:43
i can't sit still for too long like i'm
  • 47:43 - 47:45
always like moving my hand or my leg or
  • 47:45 - 47:46
    something so
  • 47:46 - 47:48
i love listening to audio books because
  • 47:48 - 47:50
i can like do something else at the same
  • 47:50 - 47:52
    time
  • 47:52 - 47:54
so how do you like stay put when you
  • 47:54 - 47:56
twitch streaming do you just like how
  • 47:56 - 47:59
    long do you twist before
  • 47:59 - 48:02
um possibly i think nowadays between two
  • 48:02 - 48:04
and four hours at a time
  • 48:04 - 48:06
you know nothing too uh in my earlier
  • 48:06 - 48:08
    twitch streaming days
  • 48:08 - 48:10
i would do a 24 hour stream about once a
  • 48:10 - 48:12
    week
  • 48:12 - 48:14
yeah and it was not good for my health
  • 48:14 - 48:15
    no not
  • 48:15 - 48:18
at all you know it's not healthy you
  • 48:18 - 48:21
    know it's not sustainable um
  • 48:21 - 48:22
so again do i stream for shorter than
  • 48:22 - 48:24
    this
  • 48:26 - 48:27
how'd you stay put when you're doing
  • 48:27 - 48:29
twitch streams you just like in the flow
  • 48:29 - 48:32
focus yeah you know i do i
  • 48:32 - 48:36
i shift myself on my seat sometimes i
  • 48:36 - 48:38
i get sore knees you know if i sit for
  • 48:38 - 48:40
    too long so i am
  • 48:40 - 48:42
yeah so i have to like uh what i'm doing
  • 48:42 - 48:44
right now is i've got my legs on one of
  • 48:44 - 48:46
    my computers underneath the desk
  • 48:46 - 48:49
stretching out so yeah you know that's
  • 48:49 - 48:50
    just it's just me
  • 48:50 - 48:53
um a lot of people are like that as some
  • 48:53 - 48:54
    can just like stay
  • 48:54 - 48:57
still for hours on ends and i'm like how
  • 48:57 - 48:59
    do you do that
  • 49:01 - 49:03
    yeah it's hard i i have a little thing
  • 49:03 - 49:05
for my feet to like raise me up so i can
  • 49:05 - 49:05
    stay
  • 49:05 - 49:08
    comfortable but it's tough i don't know
  • 49:08 - 49:10
because i see this chair like most of my
  • 49:10 - 49:11
    day
  • 49:11 - 49:14
    so yeah
  • 49:14 - 49:16
those standing deaths are pretty good
  • 49:16 - 49:18
    but i don't know if i
  • 49:18 - 49:20
i'd probably like switch it up like five
  • 49:20 - 49:22
times a day and be like
  • 49:22 - 49:24
it's too comfortable to like as much as
  • 49:24 - 49:25
    it helps it's nice like
  • 49:25 - 49:27
    i don't know there's just something nice
  • 49:27 - 49:29
about being like all right i'm in my
  • 49:29 - 49:30
    chair
  • 49:30 - 49:31
    i'm like it's like star trek i'm
  • 49:31 - 49:33
    enterprise i'm in control
  • 49:33 - 49:36
    i don't know yeah
  • 49:36 - 49:40
that's funny but yeah so let's see
  • 49:40 - 49:42
what that mentality you talk about being
  • 49:42 - 49:44
to self-help do you feel like that's
  • 49:44 - 49:44
    something
  • 49:44 - 49:46
people can learn to grow into or is that
  • 49:46 - 49:49
    something that's just like
  • 49:49 - 49:51
it's like what's the inner talk that
  • 49:51 - 49:52
goes through you that makes you be more
  • 49:52 - 49:53
optimistic because i feel like you're
  • 49:53 - 49:55
very optimistic go get a courageous
  • 49:55 - 49:56
    person so like
  • 49:56 - 49:58
yes what goes through your mindset is it
  • 49:58 - 49:59
like hey this is not gonna work out and
  • 49:59 - 50:01
you're like no it is and then you go do
  • 50:01 - 50:02
    it like
  • 50:02 - 50:04
but you're in a diary yeah you know i
  • 50:04 - 50:05
thought i've got a lot of fight
  • 50:05 - 50:08
in me um and i do like to exhaust my
  • 50:08 - 50:10
    options so i know
  • 50:10 - 50:13
that they're exhausted you know if they
  • 50:13 - 50:14
    if they don't work out
  • 50:14 - 50:17
so for example example when i moved to
  • 50:17 - 50:20
usa you know i before i moved over there
  • 50:20 - 50:21
    with my son
  • 50:21 - 50:23
i was like you know what i don't want to
  • 50:23 - 50:24
    leave my family
  • 50:24 - 50:28
i don't want to feel alone you know all
  • 50:28 - 50:30
    these things and
  • 50:30 - 50:31
i don't want to you know leave this
  • 50:31 - 50:33
    person
  • 50:33 - 50:35
so i was just like you know what i just
  • 50:35 - 50:36
    need to go
  • 50:36 - 50:38
because i might regret it later on if i
  • 50:38 - 50:41
    don't and so i went
  • 50:41 - 50:44
and it didn't work out and it was
  • 50:44 - 50:46
    horrible but i don't regret it and i i
  • 50:46 - 50:47
    learnt so much
  • 50:47 - 50:50
and it's sort of the same attitude that
  • 50:50 - 50:51
    i took with me
  • 50:51 - 50:54
so i moved back to my mother's place
  • 50:54 - 50:56
when i moved back from america
  • 50:56 - 50:58
i did previously have my own apartment
  • 50:58 - 51:00
    but someone else
  • 51:00 - 51:02
moved in unfortunately so i went back to
  • 51:02 - 51:03
    my mom's
  • 51:03 - 51:05
and then i got my job in community
  • 51:05 - 51:07
management and being a producer and i
  • 51:07 - 51:08
    actually moved
  • 51:08 - 51:10
so i moved to where i am now called
  • 51:10 - 51:11
    wellington
  • 51:11 - 51:13
and i have no family here it's just me
  • 51:13 - 51:15
and my son and so i moved here not
  • 51:15 - 51:17
    knowing many people
  • 51:17 - 51:20
um making friends at the studio i was at
  • 51:20 - 51:22
and so you know i i am quite brave in
  • 51:22 - 51:24
that regard and i've sort of
  • 51:24 - 51:27
you know come up with this this attitude
  • 51:27 - 51:28
    and this
  • 51:28 - 51:30
this way of life where you just need to
  • 51:30 - 51:31
you need to do the thing
  • 51:31 - 51:33
you know for me it's a matter of
  • 51:33 - 51:36
securing a good life for my son and for
  • 51:36 - 51:36
    myself
  • 51:36 - 51:38
and you know doing something i'm
  • 51:38 - 51:39
    passionate about and
  • 51:39 - 51:41
there's nothing that could really get in
  • 51:41 - 51:43
my way to to achieve that so it really
  • 51:43 - 51:45
depends on like how badly you
  • 51:45 - 51:47
you want something how badly you're
  • 51:47 - 51:49
    envisioning it
  • 51:49 - 51:51
so self-help books when i first started
  • 51:51 - 51:52
    listening to them
  • 51:52 - 51:55
that and uh their inner voice for me was
  • 51:55 - 51:55
    like
  • 51:55 - 51:57
uh these people are strangers you know
  • 51:57 - 51:58
    they're telling you
  • 51:58 - 52:00
what to do because you're not doing it
  • 52:00 - 52:01
    right you know
  • 52:01 - 52:03
and so like that's it that's a natural
  • 52:03 - 52:05
response to have but you do get past
  • 52:05 - 52:07
that and then you become more like open
  • 52:07 - 52:08
    to
  • 52:08 - 52:11
    others perspectives experiences and it
  • 52:11 - 52:13
makes you just a better like
  • 52:13 - 52:17
all-around person and so that's really
  • 52:17 - 52:17
    why i
  • 52:17 - 52:21
do enjoy listening to them yeah i think
  • 52:21 - 52:23
    everybody should at least like
  • 52:23 - 52:25
    surround themselves with something
  • 52:25 - 52:27
    self-help-ish whether it's motivational
  • 52:27 - 52:29
    videos or inspiration or audiobooks
  • 52:29 - 52:31
because i also kind of like that quote
  • 52:31 - 52:33
where who you surround yourself is who
  • 52:33 - 52:34
    you will be
  • 52:34 - 52:35
so if like let's say you're in a bad
  • 52:35 - 52:37
environment if you put on the headphones
  • 52:37 - 52:39
and put on positive stuff you're gonna
  • 52:39 - 52:40
    feel better you're gonna
  • 52:40 - 52:42
you're gonna feel like in in fact you
  • 52:42 - 52:43
might even feel like those are your
  • 52:43 - 52:44
friends so you'll be like i wanna
  • 52:44 - 52:45
impress them i wanna be like them i
  • 52:45 - 52:46
don't want to let them down
  • 52:46 - 52:48
so you start to work on yourself start
  • 52:48 - 52:50
to take care of yourself better start to
  • 52:50 - 52:52
    mentally think positive thoughts it's
  • 52:52 - 52:54
it's crazy what your environment can do
  • 52:54 - 52:55
you can put you in a negative place or a
  • 52:55 - 52:56
positive place so try to move yourself
  • 52:56 - 53:00
forward into a positive place exactly
  • 53:00 - 53:02
so when you learn you're learning unity
  • 53:02 - 53:04
right now what is the process like for
  • 53:04 - 53:05
    you learning unity are you
  • 53:05 - 53:07
just like watching a video day you
  • 53:07 - 53:08
    spending like tons of hours
  • 53:08 - 53:11
how do you effectively learn unity um
  • 53:11 - 53:14
as of this year i haven't learned too
  • 53:14 - 53:16
much i've been working on the studio
  • 53:16 - 53:20
since uh the 11th of january so
  • 53:20 - 53:21
i've already been full time for a little
  • 53:21 - 53:23
bit this year but for me
  • 53:23 - 53:26
um i started my process uh yeah just
  • 53:26 - 53:27
    downloading it going through the
  • 53:27 - 53:30
tutorials unity is really great because
  • 53:30 - 53:32
you've got these uh different tutorials
  • 53:32 - 53:33
    suited for
  • 53:33 - 53:35
how you want to use unity you know what
  • 53:35 - 53:37
kind of game do you want to make
  • 53:37 - 53:39
and so they've got a platformer tutorial
  • 53:39 - 53:41
that was really helpful to me so i've
  • 53:41 - 53:42
    gone through that a few
  • 53:42 - 53:46
times and i do i'm a big person for
  • 53:46 - 53:47
doing something more than once you know
  • 53:47 - 53:49
if you really want to retain
  • 53:49 - 53:51
um what you're learning you need to do
  • 53:51 - 53:52
    it more than once you
  • 53:52 - 53:54
need to do it multiple times so i'm
  • 53:54 - 53:56
    doing that and also
  • 53:56 - 54:00
you know the brekkies videos um i'm also
  • 54:00 - 54:02
learning from other youtube people and
  • 54:02 - 54:05
the game dev scene as well
  • 54:05 - 54:07
um i really just yeah surround myself
  • 54:07 - 54:09
    with these different people different
  • 54:09 - 54:10
    mediums of
  • 54:10 - 54:13
uh ways to learn you know things that i
  • 54:13 - 54:16
i need i feel that i need to learn
  • 54:16 - 54:18
um so i'm really just trying to support
  • 54:18 - 54:19
    myself in that manner but
  • 54:19 - 54:20
you know unity is going to take some
  • 54:20 - 54:24
time um i you know in my job role as a
  • 54:24 - 54:26
studio director and owner i'm not going
  • 54:26 - 54:29
to be inside unity a lot but i do feel
  • 54:29 - 54:30
it's important to have you know
  • 54:30 - 54:33
the a decent understanding of the engine
  • 54:33 - 54:33
    that you are
  • 54:33 - 54:36
using um because if you don't then then
  • 54:36 - 54:39
what are you doing yeah exactly right
  • 54:39 - 54:40
    you know
  • 54:40 - 54:42
that's literally so i'm not going full
  • 54:42 - 54:45
head but i am learning enough yeah
  • 54:45 - 54:46
    yeah there's no self-help thing
  • 54:46 - 54:47
everywhere it's just like even if you're
  • 54:47 - 54:48
    not going to
  • 54:48 - 54:50
i don't know how it was like leadership
  • 54:50 - 54:52
it's like if you're going to be a leader
  • 54:52 - 54:54
of somebody at least have an
  • 54:54 - 54:56
understanding of what they're doing so
  • 54:56 - 54:57
that way you can understand that
  • 54:57 - 54:58
the progress they're at like if somebody
  • 54:58 - 55:00
says hey i need to like do this thing
  • 55:00 - 55:00
    you're like
  • 55:00 - 55:02
i understand it's going to take you
  • 55:02 - 55:04
probably six hours instead of being like
  • 55:04 - 55:05
why don't you have it done or like get
  • 55:05 - 55:06
    it's like no
  • 55:06 - 55:07
you have an understanding so you can
  • 55:07 - 55:09
better handle and lead your team
  • 55:09 - 55:11
towards you know build a better culture
  • 55:11 - 55:13
    because of that so yeah
  • 55:13 - 55:16
    i agree yep exactly definitely
  • 55:16 - 55:19
so if anybody wanted to volunteer for
  • 55:19 - 55:20
let's say like to help you
  • 55:20 - 55:22
out what what is the process like that
  • 55:22 - 55:24
are you doing anything like that
  • 55:24 - 55:26
or you're just keeping it closed until
  • 55:26 - 55:28
    you have all your investors
  • 55:28 - 55:31
um yeah for me it's you know i've got
  • 55:31 - 55:33
some friends that are interested in
  • 55:33 - 55:35
coming on board i've got one that wants
  • 55:35 - 55:36
    to
  • 55:36 - 55:38
possibly be on the board of directors
  • 55:38 - 55:39
    and he
  • 55:39 - 55:41
is he loves video games plays them but
  • 55:41 - 55:43
he's more of like you know the business
  • 55:43 - 55:43
    east side
  • 55:43 - 55:46
type of thing so i've had support from
  • 55:46 - 55:47
    friends like that
  • 55:47 - 55:49
also other friends in the industry that
  • 55:49 - 55:51
are just you know an ear for me to
  • 55:51 - 55:55
to talk to and to bounce ideas off and
  • 55:55 - 55:57
it's it's really important to have that
  • 55:57 - 55:59
sort of support system whether they're
  • 55:59 - 56:00
going to be a co-founder or not you know
  • 56:00 - 56:02
you need to talk to people
  • 56:02 - 56:04
and and tell them what your plans are
  • 56:04 - 56:06
and if necessary you know get them to
  • 56:06 - 56:07
    sign an nda
  • 56:07 - 56:09
if you're telling secrets or something
  • 56:09 - 56:11
oh yeah definitely be careful there
  • 56:11 - 56:14
yeah so those are those are really
  • 56:14 - 56:16
    important um
  • 56:16 - 56:17
but yeah for me at the moment is just
  • 56:17 - 56:19
    you know hopefully
  • 56:19 - 56:21
uh getting into their incubation program
  • 56:21 - 56:23
i'm doing the prerequisites right now
  • 56:23 - 56:27
so i can um so what they what they are
  • 56:27 - 56:29
    they're called creative hq
  • 56:29 - 56:31
and uh here in wellington and they're a
  • 56:31 - 56:33
    council funded
  • 56:33 - 56:36
startup sort of supporting program and
  • 56:36 - 56:36
    so
  • 56:36 - 56:39
if i get into there with my business
  • 56:39 - 56:40
    then they can
  • 56:40 - 56:43
help me find more funding um and they'll
  • 56:43 - 56:46
obviously like coach me on um making
  • 56:46 - 56:49
sure my business is gonna succeed and
  • 56:49 - 56:51
you know strategies and all that sort of
  • 56:51 - 56:53
thing that can really help me so
  • 56:53 - 56:56
yeah finding those avenues where you
  • 56:56 - 56:58
know you're going to benefit from
  • 56:58 - 57:02
um is extremely helpful and finding
  • 57:02 - 57:05
funding is not easy so just just try and
  • 57:05 - 57:08
try and stick at it yeah i like that
  • 57:08 - 57:10
    advice about the funding
  • 57:10 - 57:11
now are you ever going to plan on doing
  • 57:11 - 57:13
    like a chromatic
  • 57:13 - 57:16
pie discord or do you already have one i
  • 57:16 - 57:18
i do have one but i haven't made it
  • 57:18 - 57:19
    public yet
  • 57:19 - 57:21
uh i haven't finished all the channels
  • 57:21 - 57:22
    but yes i will be
  • 57:22 - 57:24
uh launching a chromatic pie discord
  • 57:24 - 57:26
    there is also a
  • 57:26 - 57:29
reddit page as well so make sure i've
  • 57:29 - 57:31
got all the different social medias done
  • 57:31 - 57:34
ready and again i yeah well kind of i
  • 57:34 - 57:35
    haven't
  • 57:35 - 57:37
made the reddit public either i'm sort
  • 57:37 - 57:39
of like okay once i make it public i'm
  • 57:39 - 57:41
to have to spend time maintaining it
  • 57:41 - 57:42
    yeah true yeah
  • 57:42 - 57:44
    it's going to be yeah
  • 57:44 - 57:46
    [Laughter]
  • 57:46 - 57:48
awesome okay and then so there's two
  • 57:48 - 57:49
    more things
  • 57:49 - 57:50
one is what advice would you give
  • 57:50 - 57:52
anybody short advice because we already
  • 57:52 - 57:54
talked about mostly but for anybody just
  • 57:54 - 57:55
saying hey i want to start my studio i
  • 57:55 - 57:57
    don't know where to go
  • 57:57 - 57:58
what's like something short you would
  • 57:58 - 58:00
    tell them
  • 58:00 - 58:03
um i would say you know um
  • 58:03 - 58:06
the way i did it was you know is it
  • 58:06 - 58:08
really what you want to do
  • 58:08 - 58:10
you know you once you become an
  • 58:10 - 58:13
entrepreneur you sort of have to
  • 58:13 - 58:16
uh dedicate time and effort and money
  • 58:16 - 58:19
    even into you know
  • 58:19 - 58:21
starting up the business that you want
  • 58:21 - 58:22
    to start up so
  • 58:22 - 58:24
you can't just start it and then walk
  • 58:24 - 58:26
away you know you have to be dedicated
  • 58:26 - 58:28
and motivated to do it so
  • 58:28 - 58:31
for me i had that uh from there you know
  • 58:31 - 58:32
    finding a name
  • 58:32 - 58:35
for your business that stands out and
  • 58:35 - 58:36
from the others you know that
  • 58:36 - 58:37
    encompasses
  • 58:37 - 58:40
uh your vision which i found was like a
  • 58:40 - 58:42
    really neat amalgamation
  • 58:42 - 58:44
uh to make uh you know you can name your
  • 58:44 - 58:45
    business
  • 58:45 - 58:49
like for example like uh jbl you know
  • 58:49 - 58:51
what does that mean i don't know what
  • 58:51 - 58:54
that means um but you know like there's
  • 58:54 - 58:57
    you know juice box lovers
  • 58:57 - 58:59
yeah yeah well like you know so there's
  • 58:59 - 59:01
these names that can be catchy but they
  • 59:01 - 59:02
    have no meaning
  • 59:02 - 59:03
so you know try and get a little bit
  • 59:03 - 59:05
    crafty with it um
  • 59:05 - 59:07
which i found has really like benefited
  • 59:07 - 59:09
me in chromatic pie because people it
  • 59:09 - 59:11
    can really relate uh
  • 59:11 - 59:13
to what it is um and then you know just
  • 59:13 - 59:15
yeah pushing forward and just being
  • 59:15 - 59:17
    motivated helping yourself
  • 59:17 - 59:20
um don't be afraid to listen to other
  • 59:20 - 59:22
    people's opinions or perspectives you
  • 59:22 - 59:25
know you need to bring those on board
  • 59:25 - 59:28
i'm actually going to be conducting some
  • 59:28 - 59:29
    interviews next week
  • 59:29 - 59:33
    with accessibility and representation
  • 59:33 - 59:36
so i'm interviewing people with uh um
  • 59:36 - 59:39
who are partially blind who have various
  • 59:39 - 59:42
    disabilities and then also interviewing
  • 59:42 - 59:44
    people in their lgbtq
  • 59:44 - 59:48
people of color and women and so
  • 59:48 - 59:50
what i've done is i've it's called an
  • 59:50 - 59:52
    empathy interview
  • 59:52 - 59:53
so you've got these cards that you lay
  • 59:53 - 59:56
    out and you name there
  • 59:56 - 59:58
for example i've named five facts and
  • 59:58 - 59:59
    assumptions
  • 59:59 - 60:03
that lay out the problems the solutions
  • 60:03 - 60:03
    the outcome
  • 60:03 - 60:07
and the value of the product or what
  • 60:07 - 60:08
    you're trying to
  • 60:08 - 60:11
to achieve and so i'll be with what i've
  • 60:11 - 60:13
written down i'll be talking to these
  • 60:13 - 60:15
    people with accessibility
  • 60:15 - 60:17
and and representation to really like
  • 60:17 - 60:18
    nail down
  • 60:18 - 60:21
um if i have a really good idea on where
  • 60:21 - 60:23
i want to go and how to make
  • 60:23 - 60:25
the industry a a better place and how to
  • 60:25 - 60:27
    make games more accessible
  • 60:27 - 60:28
so you know just exhaust all these
  • 60:28 - 60:30
different avenues that could really like
  • 60:30 - 60:32
    launch yourself into being
  • 60:32 - 60:36
    successful wow that's a lot and that's
  • 60:36 - 60:37
    awesome
  • 60:37 - 60:40
sorry yeah no no it's all good there is
  • 60:40 - 60:43
    a lie
  • 60:43 - 60:44
and then lastly i like to do a little
  • 60:44 - 60:46
challenge at the end because over the
  • 60:46 - 60:47
    game
  • 60:47 - 60:48
courses have a challenge for the each
  • 60:48 - 60:51
lecture so what would your challenge be
  • 60:51 - 60:52
for all listeners listening could be
  • 60:52 - 60:54
    related to
  • 60:54 - 60:55
being a studio it could be related to
  • 60:55 - 60:56
producing really it's whatever you want
  • 60:56 - 60:58
like would like it to be and you could
  • 60:58 - 60:58
    take
  • 60:58 - 61:00
as much time you need to think of a
  • 61:00 - 61:02
    challenge
  • 61:02 - 61:06
a challenge um oof i would say
  • 61:06 - 61:10
oh can i mention audiobooks again
  • 61:10 - 61:12
yeah you can yeah that's perfect go read
  • 61:12 - 61:13
    an audio book take
  • 61:13 - 61:17
like you know aim for one audio book
  • 61:17 - 61:19
a month you know to start off with aim
  • 61:19 - 61:20
    for that um
  • 61:20 - 61:23
and the area that you want to learn from
  • 61:23 - 61:24
    um
  • 61:24 - 61:25
you know i'll say that with like
  • 61:25 - 61:27
anything you know whether it's a youtube
  • 61:27 - 61:28
    video
  • 61:28 - 61:30
and watch you know maybe one youtube
  • 61:30 - 61:31
    video a week from
  • 61:31 - 61:35
uh something you want to learn about um
  • 61:35 - 61:38
honestly i'm just so like seated and
  • 61:38 - 61:41
just doing it yourself you can do it you
  • 61:41 - 61:42
    know when
  • 61:42 - 61:45
i was smaller or even when my when my
  • 61:45 - 61:47
mum was my age you know
  • 61:47 - 61:48
our parents they didn't have what we
  • 61:48 - 61:50
have now you know they don't they didn't
  • 61:50 - 61:52
have the internet with youtube and
  • 61:52 - 61:55
all these different forums and advice
  • 61:55 - 61:58
and you know everything we're so lucky
  • 61:58 - 62:01
to grow up in this technological era so
  • 62:01 - 62:04
definitely make the the most of it um
  • 62:04 - 62:05
    and learn
  • 62:05 - 62:08
where you can um i would say
  • 62:08 - 62:10
i don't know if i can name just just one
  • 62:10 - 62:12
    challenge because
  • 62:12 - 62:16
it's all very like well-rounded um
  • 62:16 - 62:19
    so i i can't i'm sorry that's a little i
  • 62:19 - 62:22
think that's all i'm going to say
  • 62:22 - 62:24
it's all good that works picking on your
  • 62:24 - 62:25
    book you read it
  • 62:25 - 62:26
    and it's it's a challenge for you
  • 62:26 - 62:28
    listeners don't let anyone down
  • 62:28 - 62:30
the books are good self-help's not evil
  • 62:30 - 62:31
    i promise
  • 62:31 - 62:33
we read anything it could be game design
  • 62:33 - 62:35
    programming health
  • 62:35 - 62:38
uh healthy books nutrition anything pick
  • 62:38 - 62:38
    a book
  • 62:38 - 62:41
expand your mind grow i like it but yeah
  • 62:41 - 62:42
