Gabriel: The COVID-19 risk group speaks out

  • 0:05 - 0:07
I have physical health problems I have
  • 0:07 - 0:09
mental health problems I have complex
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    PTSD from medical trauma
  • 0:12 - 0:15
it is super traumatic to go through the
  • 0:15 - 0:17
medical system and diagnosed it is also
  • 0:17 - 0:21
traumatic to go through it as a as a
  • 0:21 - 0:27
    queer person I am I'm a trans non-binary
  • 0:27 - 0:31
person and I'm also queer in my
  • 0:31 - 0:35
sexuality as well and going through the
  • 0:35 - 0:38
medical system that way was difficult
  • 0:38 - 0:43
and I also because kind of those because
  • 0:43 - 0:45
of through those experiences or however
  • 0:45 - 0:48
it happens in the brain I also have
  • 0:48 - 0:51
anxiety and depression and so this
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    quarantine is really really really
  • 0:55 - 0:57
affecting my mental health I feel like I
  • 0:57 - 1:00
reverted in my mental health like I took
  • 1:00 - 1:03
like three years back in steps of like
  • 1:03 - 1:05
my mental health progress within like
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    the month
  • 1:07 - 1:12
    when the quarantine happened our
  • 1:12 - 1:14
services for disabled people in their
  • 1:14 - 1:18
homes were cut so I don't have any way
  • 1:18 - 1:22
to do laundry I am walking pretty well
  • 1:22 - 1:26
right now which is nice but by in a few
  • 1:26 - 1:29
hours I'll need my walker and in a few
  • 1:29 - 1:31
more hours I'll only be able to use my
  • 1:31 - 1:36
wheelchair and because because of that
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    thought increases the stress that
  • 1:37 - 1:40
increases the anxiety that decreases the
  • 1:40 - 1:42
self-worth when you look over and you
  • 1:42 - 1:43
see a giant ass by a little blonde tree
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    that you can't do yourself
  • 1:45 - 1:48
Canada's decided to get people who are
  • 1:48 - 1:51
laid off $2,000 a month and it's not
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    changing anything about the disability
  • 1:53 - 1:56
system except giving us a one-time
  • 1:56 - 1:58
emergency fund of $100 because that's
  • 1:58 - 2:01
gonna go real real far it makes me feel
  • 2:01 - 2:06
so devalued in my society our triage
  • 2:06 - 2:08
protocols are that it that if you have a
  • 2:08 - 2:12
chronic illness or even a that if you
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    have even an intellectual disability
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    that you're cannot consider you're
  • 2:19 - 2:21
considered lower on the list for a
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    ventilator literally causing like
  • 2:24 - 2:28
eugenics and like that has really really
  • 2:28 - 2:31
impacted by mental health like knowing
  • 2:31 - 2:34
that if I do get this that I won't get
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    the ventilator the medical health
  • 2:37 - 2:40
complex is just being is just it's
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    ablest racist like anti indigenous
  • 2:43 - 2:47
elf-like but it's literally telling me
  • 2:47 - 2:49
that like it's more advantageous for
  • 2:49 - 2:51
them that I should die just because I
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    have the disability
  • 2:54 - 2:58
    were systematically devalued that our
  • 2:58 - 3:01
life is considered less than yours in
  • 3:01 - 3:04
the way the system is built in the way
  • 3:04 - 3:06
the system is practiced and in the way
  • 3:06 - 3:11
that many people treat us and even in
  • 3:11 - 3:13
the way that you may subconsciously
  • 3:13 - 3:15
subconsciously be treating the people in
  • 3:15 - 3:19
your life around you and right now we're
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    particularly sensitive to those things
  • 3:21 - 3:23
so if you're talking to a disabled
  • 3:23 - 3:27
person right now and you say something
  • 3:27 - 3:29
that usually doesn't get you a little
  • 3:29 - 3:31
clip back but you're getting equipped
  • 3:31 - 3:33
back from us on that because you said
  • 3:33 - 3:35
something that wasn't ok we are gonna be
  • 3:35 - 3:37
quicker to correct you right now because
  • 3:37 - 3:41
we're under attack and that this is not
  • 3:41 - 3:45
an attack on you it's an it's an attack
  • 3:45 - 3:50
on the way that we as a society talk
  • 3:50 - 3:54
interact and include disabled people and
  • 3:54 - 3:56
if by doing that we have to attack
  • 3:56 - 3:58
language it may seem like you're
  • 3:58 - 4:03
attacking a person but impact and intent
  • 4:03 - 4:06
are different and if you've caused an
  • 4:06 - 4:09
impact that is not your intent here the
  • 4:09 - 4:11
way you the person is actually saying
  • 4:11 - 4:15
here that your intent was genuine and
  • 4:15 - 4:17
wonderful but that your impact was
  • 4:17 - 4:20
different change the behavior and go on
  • 4:20 - 4:22
and if we can all continue and choose to
  • 4:22 - 4:24
do that and choose to do that in a
  • 4:24 - 4:27
loving way and in a way where we forgive
  • 4:27 - 4:30
each other for when we get to fiery or
  • 4:30 - 4:34
when we do something that's truly wrong
  • 4:34 - 4:37
like put in a freaking triage plan that
  • 4:37 - 4:39
says that we don't get a ventilator we
  • 4:39 - 4:42
can say we're just sorry and fix it like
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    that's what I'd like
  • 4:44 - 4:46
able-bodied people to know you can just
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    say sorry and fix it
