How to Friend? #VEDA/VEDALA 16.08.24 | #withcaptions @paulidin

  • 0:00 - 0:08
    Vlog Every Day August
    Los Angeles! ...and me, Paul!
  • 0:08 - 0:15
This is not a sad vlog, the topic might seem
like it, but it's really just a confused vlog.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
I don't know how to hang out with people!
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    Just to hang out!
  • 0:19 - 0:23
Like, it seems like a thing people do.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
I don't know how to get there.
  • 0:25 - 0:31
If there's a thing that I specifically want
to do, like go to a movie, go to a restaurant,
  • 0:31 - 0:38
go to a beach, go to VidCon, then I can say,
    "Hey, friend!
  • 0:38 - 0:39
Want to do these things with me?
  • 0:39 - 0:40
Want to meet up when we're there?
  • 0:40 - 0:43
Want to, like, talk about the thing that we're
    doing?"
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    I can do that!
  • 0:45 - 0:50
But outside of that, it's hard for me to go
from no catalyst to just thinking, this is
  • 0:50 - 0:55
a person who is near me, I think we're kinda
friends, I would like to hang out with them,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    and then...
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    making that happen!
  • 0:59 - 1:04
Ho-- how do-- how do people do-- how do people
    do that?
  • 1:04 - 1:12
In high school, I would call up my friend
across the street, Erik, and say, "Hey, want
  • 1:12 - 1:15
to play computer games or something?"
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    Um.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
Or he'd call me up and say, "Hey, get your
stupid butt out here, we're going to go to
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    the mall or something."
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    And then we would!
  • 1:24 - 1:29
Because I've developed many of my friendships
with people on the internet, I'm not exactly
  • 1:29 - 1:32
sure where the appropriate boundaries are.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
Like, I have no problems tweeting one of my
friends at two o'clock in the morning.
  • 1:36 - 1:42
Or, even like, sending them a direct message
at any time of the day with no instigation.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
Easy peasey, can do it, no problem.
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    BUT
  • 1:46 - 1:50
If I'm seeing somebody that I think I'm kind
of friends with, and they're doing something
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    in LA?
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    Can I just...
  • 1:53 - 1:59
tweet at them or direct message them or email
them saying, "Hey, I saw that you're, you're
  • 1:59 - 2:03
doing this thing! i live near that!
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    Can I?
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    Can I join in?"
  • 2:07 - 2:11
I have this concern in the back of my mind
that I presume too much of our friendship.
  • 2:11 - 2:17
Like, I mostly know people from talking with
them on twitter, so maybe they don't want
  • 2:17 - 2:20
to go to a concert with me!
  • 2:20 - 2:24
Maybe they don't want to go hike in the mountains
    with me!
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    I...
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    I don't know!
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    How do you find out?
  • 2:27 - 2:29
Do you just ask people, "Hey, are we friends?"
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    I can do that!
  • 2:30 - 2:34
I like taking the direct approach on things,
I'm just not sure if it's acceptable.
  • 2:34 - 2:38
I mean, I've tried going to events, like at
    the YouTube Space LA.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    Uh, I've tried going there.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    And meeting people.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    That kinda, kinda worked.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
I definitely made friends with people at VidCon...
  • 2:47 - 2:50
most of them were not in LA!
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    *pbbt!*
  • 2:51 - 2:53
And the weird thing is, I don't feel like
I have a lack of friends.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
I feel like I've got plenty of friends, LOTS
    of friends, even.
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    I'm just not sure.
  • 2:57 - 3:03
I'm just not sure how to be in their vicinity,
    doing friend things.
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    It's ridiculous.
  • 3:04 - 3:09
I feel like other people figured out how to
do friend things, like, in elementary school
  • 3:09 - 3:11
or junior high or high school or...
  • 3:11 - 3:14
I don't know, other things that people do
    when they're young.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    I... did not!
  • 3:19 - 3:25
So, this whole #VEDA is just to ask you the
question, "How do you know how good of friends
  • 3:25 - 3:28
you are with somebody from the internet?
  • 3:28 - 3:34
And what are the boundaries about asking to
    do things with them?"
  • 3:34 - 3:37
Which, I think, is the way to get to be better
    friends.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
Please tell me in the comments below.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    I literally do not know.
  • 3:41 - 3:42
I wanna, I wanna find out!
  • 3:42 - 3:46
So I can be a good friend who hangs out with
    friends.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
Or tell me anything that matters to you, because
I want to know what matters to you.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    Also, I have a Patreon!
  • 3:51 - 3:53
Also I do some live shows.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
Check all those out on my channel...
  • 3:55 - 3:57
All the promo in this video, too.
  • 3:57 - 4:01
Thank you for making it to the end of my video,
this is where I always say:
  • 4:01 - 4:02
    Tomorrow
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    will be even better!
  • 4:03 - 4:04
    *whispers*: Ooh!
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    I'm going to the beach!
