A pro wrestler's guide to confidence
-
0:01 - 0:05Picture it: a big, sweaty, tattooed man
-
0:05 - 0:06in a cowboy hat and chaps,
-
0:06 - 0:08is in the ring
-
0:08 - 0:10as the arena full of fans cheer him on.
-
0:10 - 0:11Their hero:
-
0:11 - 0:13"Cowboy" Gator Magraw.
-
0:14 - 0:17Gator bounces off the ropes
and is quickly body-slammed to the mat. -
0:17 - 0:19His wild opponent leaps into the air,
-
0:19 - 0:22crashing down onto Gator's rib cage.
-
0:22 - 0:24Gator struggles to breathe, wondering:
-
0:25 - 0:28"Is this really what my father
wanted for me?" -
0:28 - 0:30(Laughter)
-
0:30 - 0:32That wild man in the chaps ...
-
0:33 - 0:34was me.
-
0:34 - 0:35(Laughter)
-
0:35 - 0:37(Applause)
-
0:37 - 0:40(Cheers)
-
0:45 - 0:48And the answer
to the question, surprisingly, -
0:48 - 0:49is yes.
-
0:49 - 0:51(Laughter)
-
0:51 - 0:54I grew up watching professional wrestling
-
0:54 - 0:55with my dad.
-
0:55 - 0:57And like him, I loved everything about it:
-
0:57 - 0:59the showmanship, the athletic skill,
-
0:59 - 1:01the drama.
-
1:01 - 1:05I'd be this little boy, bouncing
all over our living room, -
1:05 - 1:07pretending to be my favorite
wrestlers from TV. -
1:08 - 1:10My dad actually reminded me
a little bit of Hulk Hogan, -
1:10 - 1:13but I was Hulk Hogan
and he was Andre the Giant. -
1:13 - 1:16I'd get all serious on him
and say things like, "Dad ... -
1:16 - 1:20someday I am going to be
world heavyweight champion." -
1:20 - 1:24And he would usually smile
and very calmly say, -
1:24 - 1:29"OK, then I guess I can count on you
to be my retirement fund." -
1:29 - 1:30(Laughter)
-
1:30 - 1:31When I was 16,
-
1:31 - 1:34a small wrestling show came
to my little town in Minnesota. -
1:34 - 1:35I couldn't believe it.
-
1:35 - 1:38Nothing like that had ever
come to my town before. -
1:38 - 1:41So I got to the arena
early in the morning the day of the show, -
1:41 - 1:44waiting out in the parking lot
to see if I could spot some wrestlers -
1:44 - 1:45pulling up in their cars.
-
1:46 - 1:48It wasn't as creepy as it sounds.
-
1:49 - 1:52But I could definitely tell
who the wrestlers were, -
1:52 - 1:53just the way they walked.
-
1:53 - 1:55They were tall and confident
and intimidating, -
1:55 - 1:58with their tank tops
and Zubaz and fanny packs. -
1:59 - 2:01Why wouldn't I want to be them?
-
2:01 - 2:02(Laughter)
-
2:02 - 2:04All I could think about
was who are these people, -
2:04 - 2:06and what are they like?
-
2:06 - 2:08How did they become wrestlers?
-
2:08 - 2:10So before the show started,
-
2:10 - 2:12I walked into this tiny arena --
-
2:12 - 2:14more like a gymnasium --
-
2:14 - 2:17and I asked them if I could help
set up the wrestling ring. -
2:17 - 2:18"Sure, kid. No problem."
-
2:19 - 2:22And then I pleaded with them
to show me some wrestling moves. -
2:22 - 2:25"Sure, kid. No problem."
-
2:25 - 2:28Man, they would just punch
and kick me -- hard! -
2:28 - 2:29But I never complained.
-
2:29 - 2:33They would come to my town for one night
every couple of months that year, -
2:33 - 2:35and then -- poof! --
next day, they were gone. -
2:35 - 2:36By the next year,
-
2:36 - 2:39they finally told me about an actual
wrestling training camp -
2:39 - 2:41that one of the wrestlers was running,
-
2:41 - 2:44and I begged my parents to sign me up.
-
2:44 - 2:46Next thing I knew,
I was a high school senior by day -
2:46 - 2:49and wrestling in front of live
audiences by night. -
2:49 - 2:53I had this giant poster of an alligator
hanging on my bedroom wall. -
2:53 - 2:56So when I needed to come up with
a wrestling name at the last minute -
2:56 - 2:59and Jesse "The Body" Ventura
was already taken -- -
2:59 - 3:00(Laughter)
-
3:00 - 3:01I went with "Gator."
-
3:01 - 3:03I also wrestled in a t-shirt
and camouflage pants -
3:03 - 3:06because that's what I had in my closet.
-
3:06 - 3:09I hadn't quite figured out
how to develop my own persona yet, -
3:09 - 3:11but I was learning.
-
3:11 - 3:12It was sort of like an apprenticeship.
-
3:12 - 3:14But I was a wrestler.
-
3:14 - 3:16And my dad would come to all my matches
-
3:16 - 3:18wearing a t-shirt that said,
"Papa Gator" across the front. -
3:18 - 3:20(Laughter)
-
3:20 - 3:21And he'd brag to his friends
-
3:21 - 3:24about how his son was going to pay
for his retirement someday. -
3:24 - 3:25(Laughter)
-
3:25 - 3:26And I would've.
-
3:28 - 3:29Not long after I started wrestling,
-
3:29 - 3:32my dad unexpectedly passed away.
-
3:34 - 3:36And as you can imagine,
-
3:36 - 3:38especially as a teenage boy,
-
3:38 - 3:40it destroyed me.
-
3:43 - 3:44If you've ever lost someone,
-
3:44 - 3:47you know what a difficult
time that can be. -
3:47 - 3:49Your mind -- it's not working right.
-
3:49 - 3:51The whole thing is just so surreal.
-
3:54 - 3:57I wanted to feel normal again,
even if it was for just a second, -
3:57 - 3:59so I went back to wrestling
almost immediately. -
4:00 - 4:02Wrestling belonged to me
and my dad, you know? -
4:03 - 4:05So there I was,
-
4:05 - 4:06sitting in the locker room,
-
4:06 - 4:09getting ready for a match within days
of my dad passing away. -
4:10 - 4:11He was gone.
-
4:12 - 4:14And sitting there alone --
-
4:16 - 4:17it felt like I was hiding.
-
4:18 - 4:20But it also felt like
I needed to be there. -
4:21 - 4:24One of the wrestlers who'd been
on the scene a long time -
4:24 - 4:25knew what I was going through,
-
4:25 - 4:28and he came over to see
how I was holding up. -
4:28 - 4:29I couldn't get the words out.
-
4:29 - 4:32I just said, "I don't know
what I'm doing." -
4:33 - 4:35And then we just sat there in silence --
-
4:35 - 4:37just ... silence.
-
4:39 - 4:41Before he got up to get ready
for his own match, -
4:41 - 4:43he gave me this piece of advice
-
4:43 - 4:46that would change the entire
direction of my life. -
4:46 - 4:50He told me the best wrestlers
are just themselves, but "turned up." -
4:51 - 4:54He said successful wrestlers
find the traits within themselves -
4:54 - 4:56they're the strongest at
-
4:56 - 4:59and make those the focus
of who they become in the ring. -
5:00 - 5:01So there I sat --
-
5:01 - 5:03a scared teenager
who didn't know who he was -
5:03 - 5:06or why he was even wrestling anymore.
-
5:06 - 5:09I looked around the locker room
at some of the other wrestlers, -
5:09 - 5:11and I thought,
-
5:11 - 5:13"I look so different.
How can I ever be like them?" -
5:14 - 5:15And then it hit me.
-
5:15 - 5:18That's the moment I realized
I didn't have to be like them. -
5:19 - 5:22What I did have to do was find out:
What did it mean to be me? -
5:23 - 5:24What made me unique,
-
5:24 - 5:26and how could I use it to my advantage?
-
5:27 - 5:30I knew I wasn't a chiseled athlete
like some of these guys, -
5:30 - 5:31but I really didn't care.
-
5:31 - 5:33So the first thing I thought was,
-
5:33 - 5:37"How can I amplify something as simple
as: comfortable with my own body?" -
5:37 - 5:39I didn't know.
-
5:39 - 5:41And then I thought:
-
5:41 - 5:43Speedo.
-
5:43 - 5:45(Laughter)
-
5:46 - 5:50(Applause)
-
5:53 - 5:54Or "trunks,"
-
5:54 - 5:55as we call them in wrestling.
-
5:56 - 5:57Yeah, trunks.
-
5:57 - 5:58I could be this big guy
-
5:58 - 6:01who was comfortable
wearing these little trunks -
6:01 - 6:02in front of a bunch of strangers.
-
6:02 - 6:04So I ditched the t-shirt
and camouflage pants, -
6:04 - 6:06and Gator's new wardrobe was born.
-
6:06 - 6:07(Laughter)
-
6:07 - 6:10I was also pretty good
at drawing cartoons, -
6:10 - 6:11so I wondered if I could turn that up.
-
6:12 - 6:14I could design my own wrestling costumes,
-
6:14 - 6:18so each pair of trunks would have
its own unique design and color, -
6:18 - 6:20all of them completely different --
-
6:20 - 6:22and extremely comfortable, by the way.
-
6:22 - 6:23(Laughter)
-
6:24 - 6:26And I was also the funny kid in school,
-
6:26 - 6:27believe it or not.
-
6:27 - 6:29So I thought maybe I could turn that up.
-
6:30 - 6:34Maybe I could go from the boy
who made his buddies laugh -
6:34 - 6:37to the man who could rally
hundreds or thousands. -
6:37 - 6:38So I committed to the idea
-
6:38 - 6:41that my character wasn't going to be
as scary as some of the others. -
6:41 - 6:44I'd be hilarious from the moment
I walked into the arena. -
6:44 - 6:47With every wrestling match, I dug deeper.
-
6:47 - 6:49I found out that I could laugh at myself.
-
6:49 - 6:52So this guy would dance
and sing his entrance music -
6:52 - 6:53all the way to the ring.
-
6:53 - 6:55That was dancing, by the way.
-
6:55 - 6:56(Laughter)
-
6:56 - 6:58I found out that I was an OK wrestler,
-
6:58 - 7:00but I was an even better entertainer.
-
7:00 - 7:03And turning myself up made me
unforgettable to the fans. -
7:03 - 7:05I was trying to find
those things about me -- -
7:05 - 7:07the simple things that were special,
-
7:07 - 7:09and then ask, "How can I turn them up?"
-
7:10 - 7:14Now, I knew I wanted my character
to be a man's man like my dad was. -
7:14 - 7:18I thought, "What's more
of a man's man than a cowboy?" -
7:18 - 7:23And that's when Gator became
"Cowboy" ... Gator ... -
7:24 - 7:25Yeah, I needed a last name.
-
7:26 - 7:29I thought about it until my head hurt.
I couldn't come up with anything. -
7:29 - 7:33I'm sitting there watching TV one night,
flipping through the channels, -
7:33 - 7:34and this commercial comes on
-
7:34 - 7:37about a country singer who had just won
an Entertainer of the Year award. -
7:37 - 7:39Tim McGraw.
-
7:39 - 7:41He's a cool cowboy with a great last name.
-
7:41 - 7:42And I liked his music.
-
7:42 - 7:44It was just all part of my process.
-
7:44 - 7:46But I just kept turning myself up
-
7:46 - 7:50until I became Cowboy Gator Magraw!
-
7:50 - 7:52(Laughter)
-
7:52 - 7:56(Applause)
-
7:58 - 8:02And I knew that if I kept
turning myself up -
8:02 - 8:03and pushing myself harder,
-
8:03 - 8:05the opportunities would come.
-
8:06 - 8:07And then it finally happened.
-
8:08 - 8:09In the middle of the night,
-
8:09 - 8:11I got a phone call.
-
8:12 - 8:15It was the call I wish
my dad was around to hear. -
8:16 - 8:18The WWE,
-
8:18 - 8:21the biggest wrestling
organization in the world, -
8:21 - 8:24wanted me to come and be a part
of Monday Night Raw. -
8:24 - 8:30Yes -- all of my hard work and miles
on the road were finally paying off. -
8:30 - 8:35I got to walk down the WWE Raw
entrance ramp on live television -- -
8:35 - 8:36(Laughter)
-
8:37 - 8:40dressed up as a fake security guard --
-
8:40 - 8:41(Laughter)
-
8:41 - 8:43to escort another wrestler to the ring.
-
8:43 - 8:44(Laughter)
-
8:45 - 8:48Sure, I was disappointed
I didn't get to wrestle, -
8:48 - 8:51but very few wrestlers get
any kind of call from the WWE. -
8:51 - 8:52Maybe one in a few hundred.
-
8:53 - 8:56And becoming Cowboy Gator Magraw
is what got me there. -
8:57 - 9:00So instead of walking away that day,
-
9:00 - 9:02I decided to turn myself up again
-
9:02 - 9:04and become the best
security guard I could. -
9:04 - 9:06In fact, I did it so well,
-
9:06 - 9:08I was the only guard to get
a close-up on TV that night. -
9:10 - 9:11That's a big deal, you know?
-
9:11 - 9:13(Laughter)
-
9:15 - 9:17And I got to sit backstage that entire day
-
9:17 - 9:20with some of the most famous
pro wrestlers in the world, -
9:20 - 9:22some of which were heroes
of mine as a kid. -
9:22 - 9:25And I got to listen to them
and learn from them, -
9:25 - 9:27and for that day,
-
9:27 - 9:28I was accepted as one of them.
-
9:30 - 9:33Maybe my experience
with the WWE wasn't ideal. -
9:33 - 9:34I mean, I didn't get to wrestle.
-
9:35 - 9:37But it made me work harder,
-
9:37 - 9:40turning myself up louder year after year.
-
9:40 - 9:43I was becoming the biggest
version of myself in the ring, -
9:43 - 9:45and other people took notice.
-
9:45 - 9:47Before I knew it,
-
9:47 - 9:50I'd gone from wrestling
maybe once a month in Minnesota -
9:50 - 9:53to as often as four times a week
all over the United States -
9:53 - 9:55on the independent wrestling circuit.
-
9:55 - 9:57I was literally living my dream.
-
9:59 - 10:01While wrestling over the next few years,
-
10:01 - 10:03I suffered a pretty bad shoulder injury
-
10:03 - 10:05right around the same time
my wife and I found out -
10:06 - 10:07that we were expecting our first child.
-
10:07 - 10:09I know what you're thinking,
-
10:09 - 10:12but believe me when I say
those two events are completely unrelated. -
10:12 - 10:15(Laughter)
-
10:18 - 10:21But I needed shoulder surgery,
-
10:21 - 10:23and I wanted to be home with my family.
-
10:24 - 10:25It was my turn to be a dad.
-
10:26 - 10:30So on July 27, 2007,
-
10:30 - 10:31I wrestled my final match,
-
10:32 - 10:34and walked away
from professional wrestling -
10:34 - 10:35to pursue the next chapter of my life.
-
10:36 - 10:37And as time passed,
-
10:38 - 10:39the strangest thing started to happen.
-
10:40 - 10:42I found out that once someone
has been turned up, -
10:42 - 10:44it's pretty hard to turn them down.
-
10:45 - 10:47I left the ring but Gator stayed with me,
-
10:47 - 10:50and I use the turned-up version
of myself every day. -
10:51 - 10:54My beautiful wife has been with me
through this entire journey. -
10:54 - 10:57And by the way --
she does not like pro wrestling. -
10:57 - 10:58(Laughter)
-
10:58 - 11:00Like, at all.
-
11:01 - 11:03But she was always my biggest fan.
-
11:03 - 11:04She still is.
-
11:05 - 11:08She knows there's always going to be
some part of Gator Magraw in here, -
11:08 - 11:11and she wants our daughter and twin sons
to discover themselves -
11:11 - 11:12the way that I did,
-
11:12 - 11:16but probably with fewer body slams
and steel chair shots to the head. -
11:16 - 11:18I mean, do you know how many times
she's had to remind me -
11:18 - 11:21not to clothesline the referees
at my kid's soccer games? -
11:21 - 11:22(Laughter)
-
11:22 - 11:24I mean, it was just the one time,
-
11:24 - 11:25and my daughter was clearly fouled!
-
11:25 - 11:27(Laughter)
-
11:29 - 11:32As a parent now, I've begun to realize
that my dad wanted something -
11:32 - 11:34much more valuable than a retirement fund.
-
11:34 - 11:35Like most parents,
-
11:35 - 11:38he just wanted his kids
to reach their fullest potential. -
11:39 - 11:40I'm trying to teach my children
-
11:40 - 11:44that turning yourself up is just not some
perfect idea of how to be great, -
11:44 - 11:46it's a away of living --
-
11:46 - 11:48constantly looking
for what makes you different -
11:48 - 11:50and how you can amplify it
for the world to see. -
11:51 - 11:54And by the way, my kids
don't like wrestling, either. -
11:54 - 11:55(Laughter)
-
11:55 - 11:56But that's OK with me,
-
11:56 - 11:59because they each have their own
unique talents that can be turned up -
11:59 - 12:01just like the rest of us.
-
12:01 - 12:04My one son -- he's a whiz at electronics.
-
12:04 - 12:07So maybe helping him turn up
makes him become the next Steve Jobs. -
12:08 - 12:11My other son and my daughter --
they're great at art, -
12:11 - 12:13so maybe helping them turn up their gifts
-
12:13 - 12:15helps them become the next Pablo Picasso.
-
12:16 - 12:18You never know what
you have the ability to do -
12:18 - 12:20until you dig.
-
12:21 - 12:23And don't be afraid
to put yourself out there. -
12:23 - 12:24I mean, look around.
-
12:24 - 12:27They say that if you get nervous
in front of an audience, -
12:27 - 12:29just imagine them in their underwear.
-
12:29 - 12:31But then I think, "Hey,
I've wrestled in less." -
12:31 - 12:33(Laughter)
-
12:33 - 12:38(Applause)
-
12:41 - 12:44Look, the wrestling circus doesn't need
to come to your town -
12:44 - 12:47before you get an invitation
to be the real you -- -
12:47 - 12:49the bigger, more stunning
version of yourself. -
12:49 - 12:52It doesn't even necessarily
come from our parents. -
12:52 - 12:55Turning yourself up means looking inward
toward our true selves -
12:55 - 12:57and harnessing the voice that says,
-
12:57 - 12:59"Maybe, just maybe,
-
12:59 - 13:01I am more than I thought I was."
-
13:02 - 13:03Thank you.
-
13:03 - 13:07(Applause)
