A pro wrestler's guide to confidence

  • Not Synced
    Picture it:
  • Not Synced
    a big, sweaty, tatooed-man
in a cowboy hat and chaps,
  • Not Synced
and send him in the ring
  • Not Synced
    as the arena,
  • Not Synced
full of fans cheer him on.
  • Not Synced
    Their hero.
  • Not Synced
    Cowboy Gator McGraw.
  • Not Synced
    Gator bounces off the ropes
  • Not Synced
and is quickly body-slammed to the mat.
  • Not Synced
His wild opponent leaps into the air,
  • Not Synced
crashing down onto Gator's rib cage.
  • Not Synced
    Gator struggles to breathe,
  • Not Synced
    wondering, "Is this really what
    my father wanted for me?"
  • Not Synced
That wild man in the chaps ...
  • Not Synced
    was me.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
And the answer to the question,
  • Not Synced
    surprisingly is yes.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I grew up watching professional
    wrestling with my dad.
  • Not Synced
And like him, I loved everything about it:
  • Not Synced
    the showmanship,
  • Not Synced
    the athletic skill,
  • Not Synced
    the drama.
  • Not Synced
    I'd be this little boy,
  • Not Synced
bouncing all over our living room,
  • Not Synced
    pretending to be my favorite
    wrestlers from TV.
  • Not Synced
    My dad actually reminded me
a little bit of Hulk Hogan,
  • Not Synced
    but I was Hulk Hogan
and he was Andre the Giant.
  • Not Synced
I'd get all serious on him,
  • Not Synced
    and say things like, "Dad,
  • Not Synced
someday I am going to be
    world heavyweight champion."
  • Not Synced
    And we would usually smile
  • Not Synced
    and very calmly say, "OK,
  • Not Synced
then I guess I can count on you
    to be my retirement fund."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    When I was 16,
  • Not Synced
a small wrestling show came to my
    little town in Minnesota,
  • Not Synced
    and I couldn't believe it.
  • Not Synced
    Nothing like that had ever
    come to my town before.
  • Not Synced
So of course I got to the arena
early in the morning the day of the show,
  • Not Synced
waiting out in the parking lot
  • Not Synced
to see if I could spot some wrestlers
    pulling up in their cars.
  • Not Synced
It wasn't as creepy as it sounds.
  • Not Synced
    But I could definitely tell
    who the wrestlers were
  • Not Synced
    just the way the walked.
  • Not Synced
    They were tall and confident
    and intimidating
  • Not Synced
    with their tank tops,
  • Not Synced
    and [zoobas] and fanny packs.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Why wouldn't I want to be them?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
All I could think about was,
  • Not Synced
    who are these people,
  • Not Synced
    and what are they like?
  • Not Synced
    How did they become wrestlers?
  • Not Synced
    So before the show started,
  • Not Synced
I walking into this tiny area --
  • Not Synced
    more like a gymnasium --
  • Not Synced
and I asked them if I could help
    set up the wrestling ring.
  • Not Synced
    "Sure, kid. No problem."
  • Not Synced
And then I pleaded with them
to show me some wrestling moves.
  • Not Synced
    "Sure, kid. No problem."
  • Not Synced
Man, they would just punch and kick me --
  • Not Synced
    hard.
  • Not Synced
    But I never complained.
  • Not Synced
They would come to my town for one night
  • Not Synced
every couple of months that year,
  • Not Synced
    and poof --
  • Not Synced
    next day they were gone.
  • Not Synced
    By the next year,
  • Not Synced
they finally told me about an actual
    wrestling training camp
  • Not Synced
that one of the wrestlers was running,
  • Not Synced
and I begged my parents to sign me up.
  • Not Synced
    Next thing I knew,
  • Not Synced
I was a high school senior by day
  • Not Synced
and wrestling in front of live
    audiences by night.
  • Not Synced
I had this giant poster of an alligator
    hanging on my bedroom wall.
  • Not Synced
So I needed to come up with a wrestling
    name at the last minute,
  • Not Synced
    and Jesse "The Body" Ventura
    was already taken --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I went with gator.
  • Not Synced
    I also wrestled in a t-shirt
    and camofluage pants
  • Not Synced
because that's what I had in my closet.
  • Not Synced
I hadn't quite figured out how
to develop my own persona yet,
  • Not Synced
    but I was learning --
  • Not Synced
it was sort of like an apprenticeship.
  • Not Synced
    But I was a wrestler.
  • Not Synced
And my dad would come to all my matches
  • Not Synced
    wearing a t-shirt that said,
    "Papa Gator" across the front.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And he bragged to his friends
  • Not Synced
about how his son was going to pay
    for his retirement someday.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And I would've.
  • Not Synced
Not long after I started wrestling,
  • Not Synced
    my dad unexpectedly passed away.
  • Not Synced
    And as you can imagine,
  • Not Synced
especially to a teenage boy --
  • Not Synced
    it destroyed me.
  • Not Synced
    If you've ever lost someone,
  • Not Synced
    you know what a difficult
    time that can be.
  • Not Synced
    Your mind --
  • Not Synced
    it's not working right.
  • Not Synced
The whole thing is just so surreal.
  • Not Synced
I wanted to feel normal again
even if it was for just a second,
  • Not Synced
so I went back to wrestling
    almost immediately.
  • Not Synced
    Wrestling belonged to me
    and my dad, you know?
  • Not Synced
    So there I was.
  • Not Synced
    Sitting in a locker room,
  • Not Synced
getting ready for a match within days
    of my dad passing away.
  • Not Synced
    He was gone.
  • Not Synced
    And sitting there alone --
  • Not Synced
I felt like I was hiding.
  • Not Synced
    But it also felt
like I needed to be there.
  • Not Synced
One of the wrestlers who'd been
on the scene a long time
  • Not Synced
knew what I was going through,
  • Not Synced
and he came over to see
    how I was holding up.
  • Not Synced
I couldn't get the words out.
  • Not Synced
    I just said, "I don't know
    what I'm doing."
  • Not Synced
And we just sat there in silence --
  • Not Synced
    just silence.
  • Not Synced
Before he got up to get ready
    for his own match,
  • Not Synced
he gave me this piece of advice
  • Not Synced
    that would change the entire
    direction of my life.
  • Not Synced
He told me the best wrestlers
are just themselves, but turned up.
  • Not Synced
    He said successful wrestlers
    find the traits within themselves
  • Not Synced
    or the strongest [...]
  • Not Synced
and make those the focus of who
    they become in the ring.
  • Not Synced
    So there I sat --
  • Not Synced
    a scared teenager who didn't
    know who he was
  • Not Synced
or why he was even wrestling anymore.
  • Not Synced
I looked around the locker oom
at some of the other wrestlers,
  • Not Synced
and I thought, "I look so different.
  • Not Synced
How can I ever be like them?"
  • Not Synced
    And then it hit me.
  • Not Synced
    That's the moment I realized
I didn't have to be like them.
  • Not Synced
What I did have to do was find out
what did it mean to be me.
  • Not Synced
    What made me unique,
  • Not Synced
and how could I use it to my advantage?
  • Not Synced
    I knew I wasn't a chiseled athlete
    like some of these guys
  • Not Synced
    but I really didn't care.
  • Not Synced
So the first thing I thought was,
  • Not Synced
how can I amplify something as simple
as comfortable with my own body?
  • Not Synced
    I didn't know.
  • Not Synced
    And then I thought --
  • Not Synced
    speedo.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Or trunks --
  • Not Synced
as we call them in wrestling.
  • Not Synced
    Yeah, trunks.
  • Not Synced
I could be this big guy
  • Not Synced
    who was comfortable wearing
    these little trunks
  • Not Synced
in front of a bunch of strangers.
  • Not Synced
    So I ditched the t-shirt
    and camouflage pants,
  • Not Synced
and Gator's new wardrobe was born.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I was also pretty good
    at drawing cartoons,
  • Not Synced
so I wondered if I could turn that up.
  • Not Synced
I could design my own wrestling costumes,
  • Not Synced
so each pair of trunks would have
its own unique design and color,
  • Not Synced
all of them completely different --
  • Not Synced
and extremely comfortable, by the way.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And I was also the funny kid in school,
  • Not Synced
    believe it or not.
  • Not Synced
So I thought maybe I could turn that up.
  • Not Synced
Maybe I could go from the boy
    who made his buddies laugh
  • Not Synced
to the man who could rally
    hundreds or thousands.
  • Not Synced
So I committed to the idea
  • Not Synced
that my character wasn't going to be
as scary as some of the others.
  • Not Synced
I'd be hilarious from the moment
    I walked into the arena.
  • Not Synced
    With every wrestling match,
  • Not Synced
    I dug deeper.
  • Not Synced
I found out that I could laugh at myself.
  • Not Synced
    So this guy would dance
    and sing his entrance music
  • Not Synced
all the way to the ring --
  • Not Synced
that was dancing, by the way.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
I found out that I was an OK wrestler,
  • Not Synced
but I was an even better entertainer.
  • Not Synced
And turning myself up made me
    unforgettable to the fans.
  • Not Synced
    I was trying to find
    those things about me --
  • Not Synced
the simple things that were special,
  • Not Synced
and then ask, "How can I turn them up?"
  • Not Synced
Now I knew I wanted my character
to be a man's man like my dad was.
  • Not Synced
    I thought,
  • Not Synced
    what's more of a man's man than a cowboy?
  • Not Synced
    And that's when Gator became
    Cowboy Gator --
  • Not Synced
yeah, I needed a last name.
  • Not Synced
And I thought about it until my head hurt,
  • Not Synced
I couldn't come up with anything.
  • Not Synced
I was sitting there watching TV one night
    flipping through the channels,
  • Not Synced
    and this commercial comes on
    talking about a country singer
  • Not Synced
who had just won and Entertainer
    of the Year award.
  • Not Synced
    Tim McGraw.
  • Not Synced
He's a cool cowboy with a great last name,
  • Not Synced
    and I liked his music.
  • Not Synced
It was just all part of my process,
  • Not Synced
but I just kept turning myself up
  • Not Synced
until I became Cowboy Gator McGraw!
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
And I knew that if I kept
    turning myself up
  • Not Synced
    and pushing myself harder,
  • Not Synced
    the opportunities would come.
  • Not Synced
    And then it finally happened.
  • Not Synced
In the middle of the night,
  • Not Synced
    I got a phone call.
  • Not Synced
It was the call I wish
my dad was around to hear.
  • Not Synced
    The WWE,
  • Not Synced
    the biggest wrestling
    organization in the world,
  • Not Synced
wanted me to come and be a part
    of Monday Night Raw.
  • Not Synced
    Yes.
  • Not Synced
All of my hard work and miles
on the road were finally paying off.
  • Not Synced
I got to walk down the WWE Raw
entrance ramp on live television --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
dressed up as a fake security guard --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
to escort another wrestler to the ring.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Sure, I was disappointed
    I didn't get to wrestle,
  • Not Synced
but very few wrestlers get any
kind of call from the WWE.
  • Not Synced
Maybe one in a few hundred.
  • Not Synced
    And become Cowboy Gator McGraw
    is what got me there.
  • Not Synced
So instead of walking away that day,
  • Not Synced
I decided to turn myself up again
  • Not Synced
    and become the best
    security guard I could.
  • Not Synced
In fact, I did it so well,
  • Not Synced
I was the only guard to get
a close-up on TV that night.
  • Not Synced
That's a big deal, you know?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And I got to sit backstage that entire day
  • Not Synced
with some of the most famous
    pro wrestlers in the world,
  • Not Synced
    some of which were heroes
    of mind as a kid.
  • Not Synced
And I got to listen to them
    and learn from them,
  • Not Synced
    and for that day,
  • Not Synced
I was accepted as one of them.
  • Not Synced
    Maybe my experience
    with the WWE wasn't ideal,
  • Not Synced
    I mean, I didn't get to wrestle.
  • Not Synced
But it made me work harder,
  • Not Synced
turning myself up louder year after year.
  • Not Synced
    I was becoming the biggest
version of myself in the ring,
  • Not Synced
    and other people took notice.
  • Not Synced
    Before I knew it,
  • Not Synced
    I'd gone from wrestling
maybe once a month in Minnesota
  • Not Synced
to as often as four times a week
    all over the United States
  • Not Synced
    on the independent wrestling circuit.
  • Not Synced
I was literally living my dream.
  • Not Synced
While wrestling over the next few years,
  • Not Synced
I suffered a pretty bad shoulder injury
  • Not Synced
    right around the same time
  • Not Synced
that my wife and I found out
that we were expecting our first child,
  • Not Synced
and I know what you're thinking,
  • Not Synced
but believe me when I say those two
    events are completely unrelated.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    But I needed shoulder surgery,
  • Not Synced
and I wanted to be home with my family.
  • Not Synced
It was my turn to be a dad.
  • Not Synced
    So on July 27, 2007,
  • Not Synced
    I wrestled my final match,
  • Not Synced
    and walked away
    from professional wrestling
  • Not Synced
to pursue the next chapter of my life.
  • Not Synced
    And as time passed,
  • Not Synced
the strangest thing started to happen.
  • Not Synced
I found out that once someone
    has been turned up,
  • Not Synced
it's pretty hard to turn them down.
  • Not Synced
I left the ring but Gator stayed with me,
  • Not Synced
and I use the turned up version
    of myself every day.
  • Not Synced
My beautiful wife has been with me
    through this entire journey.
  • Not Synced
    And by the way,
  • Not Synced
she did not like pro wrestling.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Like at all.
  • Not Synced
But she was always my biggest fan.
  • Not Synced
    She still is.
  • Not Synced
She knows there's always going to be
some part of Gator McGraw in here,
  • Not Synced
and she wants our daughter and twin sons
to discover themselves the way that I did,
  • Not Synced
but probably with fewer body slams
  • Not Synced
and steel chair shots to the head.
  • Not Synced
I mean, do you know how many times
    she's had to remind me
  • Not Synced
    not to clothesline the referees
    at my kid's soccer games?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
I mean, it was just the one time,
  • Not Synced
and my daughter was clearly fouled.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    As a parent now,
  • Not Synced
    I've begun to realize
  • Not Synced
    that my dad wanted something
much more valuable than a retirement fund.
  • Not Synced
    Like most parents,
  • Not Synced
he just wanted his kids to reach
    their fullest potential.
  • Not Synced
I'm trying to teach my children
  • Not Synced
that turning yourself up is just not some
perfect idea of how to be great,
  • Not Synced
    it's a away of living --
  • Not Synced
    constantly looking
    for what makes you different,
  • Not Synced
and how you can amplify it
    for the world to see.
  • Not Synced
    And by the way,
  • Not Synced
my kids don't like wrestling either.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    But that's OK with me,
  • Not Synced
because they each have their own
unique talents that can be turned up
  • Not Synced
just like the rest of us.
  • Not Synced
    My one son --
  • Not Synced
    he's a whiz at electronics.
  • Not Synced
So maybe helping him turn up
makes him become the next Steve Jobs.
  • Not Synced
    My other son, my daughter,
  • Not Synced
    they're great at art,
  • Not Synced
so maybe helping them turn up their gifts
  • Not Synced
helps them become the next Pablo Picasso.
  • Not Synced
You never know what you have
the ability to do until you dig.
  • Not Synced
    And don't be afraid
    to put yourself out there.
  • Not Synced
    I mean, look around.
  • Not Synced
They say that if you get nervous
    in front of an audience,
  • Not Synced
you just imagine them in their underwear,
  • Not Synced
    but then I think,
  • Not Synced
    "Hey, I've wrestled in less."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
Look, the wrestling circus doesnt' need
    to come to your town
  • Not Synced
    before you get an invitation
to be the real you --
  • Not Synced
    the bigger, more stunning
    version of yourself.
  • Not Synced
    It doesn't even necessarily
    come from our parents.
  • Not Synced
Turning yourself up means looking inward
    toward our true selves
  • Not Synced
and harnessing the voice that says,
  • Not Synced
    "Maybe ...
  • Not Synced
    just maybe,
  • Not Synced
I am more than I thought I was."
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
