Breaking the Glass Ceiling | Erika Buhler | TEDxYouth@Edmonton
-
0:06 - 0:07Hashtag goals.
-
0:10 - 0:11What was the first thing
that came to -
0:11 - 0:13mind when you heard me
say this? -
0:13 - 0:14Was it Kylie Jenner's lips?
-
0:15 - 0:16Eyebrows on fleek?
-
0:16 - 0:17Or did you just ask
yourself -
0:17 - 0:18Why'd she just say
-
0:18 - 0:19hashtag goals then pause?
-
0:19 - 0:19Who gave her the mike?
-
0:19 - 0:20What is she doing?
-
0:20 - 0:22But did you ever stop and think
-
0:22 - 0:24what really are my goals?
-
0:24 - 0:26and how can I achieve them?
-
0:26 - 0:27Well for many of us
-
0:27 - 0:28graduating
-
0:28 - 0:29maybe just passing english
[indiscernible] -
0:29 - 0:31at this point
-
0:32 - 0:33going to university
-
0:33 - 0:34getting that dream job
-
0:34 - 0:35may have been
the first thing -
0:35 - 0:36that came to mind
-
0:36 - 0:37when you heard me say
-
0:37 - 0:38hashtag goals.
-
0:38 - 0:41But how often do you consider the barriers
-
0:41 - 0:42that make achieving these goals
-
0:42 - 0:44way more difficult
-
0:44 - 0:46and the fact that some of these barriers
-
0:46 - 0:47only apply to you
-
0:47 - 0:49because of your gender.
-
0:50 - 0:51Well, there's a term called
-
0:51 - 0:53the Glass Ceiling or
the Glass wall -
0:53 - 0:54or the Glass Barrier,
whatever you -
0:54 - 0:55want to call it
-
0:55 - 0:56it's a term used to describe
-
0:56 - 0:59that unseen barrier that prevents you from
-
0:59 - 1:01achieving your goals just because of your
-
1:01 - 1:03gender regardless of any qualifications
-
1:03 - 1:05or achievements you may have.
-
1:06 - 1:07So whether that's trying to get a certain
-
1:07 - 1:08position at work
-
1:08 - 1:10or the wage gap between
men and women -
1:10 - 1:11for equal work or even just
-
1:11 - 1:13gender stereotyping people on their
-
1:13 - 1:14work roles and abilities.
-
1:16 - 1:17But I can tell you first-hand
-
1:17 - 1:18how discouraging
-
1:18 - 1:21facing a wall like this can be to
-
1:21 - 1:23girls trying to achieve their goals.
-
1:24 - 1:25I'd like to compare this
-
1:25 - 1:27to walking up a flight of stairs
-
1:27 - 1:28and at every level you're blocked
-
1:28 - 1:30by a transparent wall.
-
1:30 - 1:32You can see beyond this wall
-
1:32 - 1:33because your goal is set
-
1:33 - 1:35to get to the very top of the stairs
-
1:35 - 1:36but you just can't get past it.
-
1:37 - 1:38Well how do you do that?
-
1:38 - 1:40Well let me share a situation that
-
1:40 - 1:41actually happened to me.
-
1:42 - 1:43A wall I once faced
-
1:43 - 1:45was being discriminated against
-
1:45 - 1:47because of my gender.
-
1:47 - 1:49So last year my school academy and I
-
1:49 - 1:51said we'd do a bunch of projects
-
1:51 - 1:52around Edmonton
-
1:52 - 1:53we'd go and present
-
1:53 - 1:54at different establishments
-
1:54 - 1:56to young female students
-
1:56 - 1:57how girls and boys are portrayed
-
1:57 - 1:58in media
-
1:58 - 2:00how damaging this image can be.
-
2:00 - 2:02So we'd go out in our academy uniform
-
2:02 - 2:04and we'd do these presentations
-
2:04 - 2:06but between one of the presentations
-
2:06 - 2:07three of my classmates and me
-
2:07 - 2:09were pulled to the side and asked to leave
-
2:09 - 2:12the establishment we were presenting at
-
2:12 - 2:14because our uniform academy skirts
-
2:14 - 2:17didn't respect their dress code.
-
2:17 - 2:18Mind you, they respected our
-
2:18 - 2:20dress code which was past the fingertips.
-
2:21 - 2:23I was blocked from achieving my
-
2:23 - 2:24goal that day.
-
2:25 - 2:27This was the first instance
where I really -
2:27 - 2:28saw how young girls can be
-
2:28 - 2:30prevented from achieving their goals
-
2:30 - 2:32just because of their gender.
-
2:33 - 2:35Instead of teaching young girls about
-
2:35 - 2:37being discriminated against because of
-
2:37 - 2:38their gender
-
2:38 - 2:40which is what I was doing with my academy
-
2:40 - 2:42I was actually experiencing it.
-
2:43 - 2:44I was made to feel guilty
-
2:44 - 2:45for doing something
-
2:45 - 2:47or in this case wearing something
-
2:47 - 2:49that was completely appropriate.
-
2:50 - 2:51My Glass Wall was in front of me
-
2:52 - 2:53and I felt pretty terrible.
-
2:54 - 2:56I felt afraid to wear my uniform again
-
2:56 - 2:58even if it was something
-
2:58 - 2:59that I was proud to wear
-
2:59 - 3:00because to me
-
3:00 - 3:01my uniform symbolises
-
3:01 - 3:03being a part of change
-
3:03 - 3:04and having a voice
-
3:04 - 3:05and feeling empowered
-
3:05 - 3:06yet
-
3:06 - 3:07I felt none of those things.
-
3:08 - 3:09But how did I get back to
feeling all -
3:09 - 3:10those things again?
-
3:11 - 3:12Well I was fortunate enough
-
3:12 - 3:14to have my friends and teachers
-
3:14 - 3:16that were there on the spot and after
-
3:16 - 3:18when that happened
-
3:18 - 3:19to help support me
-
3:19 - 3:21and acknowledge that it wasn't my fault
-
3:21 - 3:22and that I was ok
-
3:22 - 3:27and this all really made sense to me
-
3:27 - 3:28because my Glass Wall was shattered
-
3:28 - 3:31with the help of other people
-
3:31 - 3:33because a Glass Ceiling
-
3:33 - 3:36is something that needs teamwork
-
3:36 - 3:38but as cliché as it sounds
-
3:38 - 3:39the glory in life is that
-
3:39 - 3:41you learn from your past experiences
-
3:41 - 3:43and you have no regrets
-
3:43 - 3:45but when you see that Glass Ceiling
-
3:45 - 3:46that Glass Wall
-
3:46 - 3:47that barrier in front of you
-
3:47 - 3:49and you wonder how on earth
-
3:49 - 3:51you're gonna break through it
-
3:51 - 3:52take a look at the broken
pieces of glass -
3:52 - 3:55on the ground around you and behind you
-
3:55 - 3:57and let those broken pieces of glass
-
3:57 - 3:58give you the strength
-
3:58 - 3:59to break through that barrier
-
3:59 - 4:00in front of you
-
4:00 - 4:02because you've realised
-
4:02 - 4:03you've already done it before
-
4:03 - 4:05and you can do it again
-
4:05 - 4:07and the good thing about these kinds of
-
4:07 - 4:09barriers is that they become
easier to break -
4:09 - 4:11when you realise there are other people
-
4:11 - 4:13trying to break it with you.
-
4:13 - 4:15When we realise we're all trying to break
-
4:15 - 4:17the exact same glass
-
4:18 - 4:19and this is why we need to start
-
4:19 - 4:20working together now.
-
4:21 - 4:23Because by working together now
-
4:23 - 4:24we make this process easier
-
4:24 - 4:26for generations to come
-
4:26 - 4:27just like generations
-
4:27 - 4:28that have passed before us
-
4:28 - 4:29like our mothers
-
4:29 - 4:32even inspiring women like Malala
-
4:32 - 4:34who fought for change just so that girls
-
4:34 - 4:36can have an education.
-
4:36 - 4:40These women fought together to make the
-
4:40 - 4:41struggle easier for us
-
4:41 - 4:43by fighting for our right to vote
-
4:43 - 4:44by taking most of the hits
-
4:44 - 4:46and punches in the workplace
-
4:46 - 4:48just so we can experience
-
4:48 - 4:49less discrimination.
-
4:50 - 4:52They have shown us that we need to instill
-
4:52 - 4:55leadership among young girls now
-
4:55 - 4:56because when we give them these
-
4:56 - 4:58amazing leadership skills
-
4:58 - 5:00and we teach them to work together
-
5:00 - 5:02and to be aware of gender issues
-
5:02 - 5:03both male and female
-
5:03 - 5:05and to instill self-worth
-
5:05 - 5:08we give them the ability to break through
-
5:08 - 5:09any Glass Ceiling
-
5:09 - 5:11any barrier they face
-
5:11 - 5:13and this will allow them
-
5:13 - 5:15and give them the ability
-
5:15 - 5:16to achieve their goals.
-
5:17 - 5:18So I'm going to leave you
-
5:18 - 5:19with one question
-
5:20 - 5:22What does hashtag goals mean to you?
-
5:22 - 5:23Thank you.
