Simplifying humility and integrity | Joe Sabini | TEDxUniversityofNevada

  • 0:19 - 0:21
Raise your hand if you lie.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    (Laughter)
  • 0:23 - 0:25
Now, right now, if your hand is down,
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    you're probably a bigger liar
  • 0:26 - 0:29
than the person nearest to you
    with their hand up.
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    (Laughter)
  • 0:30 - 0:33
But it's OK, we all lie. Don't worry.
I lie all the time. Ask my mom.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    (Laughter)
  • 0:36 - 0:40
But the problem is that little things
    turn into big things,
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    because how we do anything
    is how we do everything.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
So if you lie now, it's going make
    lying later way easier,
  • 0:48 - 0:52
but if you tell the truth now,
the truth comes way easier later.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    But it's difficult because today
    we're flooded with definitions
  • 0:55 - 0:58
like honesty and hypocrisy and humility,
  • 0:58 - 1:01
and maybe we don't even know
    what they actually mean,
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    because if you google them,
on the surface, the definitions are easy,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
but when you put them into practice,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    they don't work.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    Humility is unique,
  • 1:10 - 1:14
    because when you have humility,
    people don't notice.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    That's the most important
    thing about humility.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
It is nobody notices but you.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    (Laughter)
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    Nine times out of ten,
if you ask someone if they have humility,
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    the answer will be yes
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    simply because they think
    they're being honest.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
But it's not honesty, it's not meekness,
    it's not belittling yourself.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
Humility is not thinking less of yourself.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
Humility is thinking of yourself less.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    Right?
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    So...
  • 1:41 - 1:44
It's funny, someone was asking me and I
was trying to tell them about humility.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
And the most important thing is
when you work in your groups,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    your teams, your leadership,
    wherever you are,
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    your ministry of your church,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    nobody notices.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    But it doesn't work
    unless you have integrity.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    Integrity is when you align
    your actions with your beliefs.
  • 2:00 - 2:04
    The Latin adjective "integer"
    means "whole" or "one."
  • 2:04 - 2:07
Think of it like that. That's where
    the word "integrity" comes from.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
I think of it as a pizza,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
so if you cut the pizza,
    you separate the pieces out,
  • 2:11 - 2:14
but it leaves a missing part
    in the center.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
When you don't have a center,
you don't have a point of reference,
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    you lose your integrity,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
and it leaves you asking a question
  • 2:21 - 2:23
like, "Why do I feel this way?
    What am I missing?"
  • 2:23 - 2:28
And oftentimes, we try to use beauty,
    fame, money, success and popularity
  • 2:28 - 2:30
to bring the pieces back together,
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    but it just doesn't work.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
It leaves you confused and wondering,
you know, ''Why do I not feel important?''
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    But the thing about integrity
is that it leads to hypocrisy.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
If you don't align your actions
    with your beliefs,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
you kind of become a hypocrite.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
You know, acting has always been
    a passion of mine.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
I like the theater, the lights, the sound.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    And in high school,
  • 2:52 - 2:55
I was studying for a vocab test
    and the word was "hypocrite,"
  • 2:55 - 2:59
    and the Greek root suggests
    something along the lines
  • 2:59 - 3:03
of an image of a person who wears a mask
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    and pretends to be someone
    he or she is not
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    in a theatrical production.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
And when I think about that,
I think we all have masks,
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    and maybe we don't
    even know what they are,
  • 3:14 - 3:17
like our social media or our internet
    or the things we post.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    But the theatrical production
    is just our lives.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    Do you post things
about what your life is like,
  • 3:23 - 3:27
or do you post things about what you want
people to think that your life is like?
  • 3:27 - 3:29
Do your tweets start with "I,"
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    or do your tweets start
    with "We did this?"
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    It's all something to consider.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
It's like the movies, you know,
    Iron Man, Batman.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
They all start out with a mask
in the beginning of the movie,
  • 3:39 - 3:40
but by the end of the movie,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
we figure out who they are.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
You know, the person is revealed
  • 3:45 - 3:49
    and it's because they're missing
the humility side of the equation.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    You know, I think
    for humility and integrity,
  • 3:51 - 3:56
one thing I like to do at this -
    I mean, I feel like I'm 12 up here -
  • 3:56 - 3:57
but one thing I like to do is look up.
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    I look up to people,
    I find mentors in people.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
I can study off of teachers and people
    who have built legacies.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
One of the things I do is -
a person I looked up to is named Ellie.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
And when I think about Ellie,
  • 4:10 - 4:14
    she 100% has no prejudice
    against color, race, religion.
  • 4:14 - 4:18
She can face the world without lies,
she can take blame without resentment,
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    She can even start
    the day without caffeine.
  • 4:21 - 4:26
    But it's interesting because
as soon as I think I'm just like Ellie,
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    I remember that Ellie
    is just my family dog.
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    (Laughter)
  • 4:31 - 4:34
So, as soon as you think
    you have humility and integrity
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    and you're not a hypocrite,
  • 4:36 - 4:39
you're just as good as your dog
    that sleeps on the floor.
  • 4:39 - 4:42
And so, all this is to say -
I'm not bashing my dog, I love my dog.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    We all love our dogs.
  • 4:44 - 4:48
But the thing is that there's no levels
    to humility and integrity.
  • 4:48 - 4:52
You either have it and you practice it,
or you have it and you don't practice it.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
There's no in between, no one's better.
  • 4:54 - 4:57
    If you're great at it,
you're as good as your dog.
  • 4:57 - 5:02
And so, my idea today is to encourage us
to align our actions with our beliefs,
  • 5:03 - 5:07
think of ourselves a little bit less,
    others a little bit more,
  • 5:07 - 5:12
and we'll know exactly who we are
and we'll know exactly what we want.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    Thank you.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    (Applause)
