-
0:21 - 0:26CART is an advanced and accurate trans-
lation method that uses a human captioner -
0:26 - 0:29assisted by computer-based captioning
technology to transcribe -
0:29 - 0:33spoken dialogue word-for-word
into written sentences. -
0:34 - 0:41CART is widely used in a variety of educa-
tional, professional and personal settings -
0:42 - 0:45For example, here at the University of
Washington CART is often used -
0:45 - 0:49to enhance students' ability to learn
in a classroom setting -
0:49 - 0:53and communicate with instructors,
mentors, and peers. -
0:54 - 0:57CART provides realtime word-for-word
translation, transcribing -
0:57 - 1:00each word as it is being spoken.
-
1:00 - 1:05At the University of Washington, I was
part of the first Summer Academy here. -
1:05 - 1:08D'WAYNE: What CART does, it just actually
types that exact word -
1:08 - 1:11and leaves it up to you whether
you know it or not. -
1:11 - 1:15Like, you can ask the question,
'what does that mean?' -
1:15 - 1:19or if you do know what that word means,
you're understanding what it's saying. -
1:19 - 1:24DWAYNE: If you have verbatim word-by-word
-
1:24 - 1:28print right there in front of you, you're
able to understand more -
1:28 - 1:32and, like, have a lesser chance of
misinterpreting what they're saying. -
1:32 - 1:36NARRATOR: CART is noted for
it's accuracy, speed, -
1:36 - 1:38and wide variety of practical
applications. -
1:38 - 1:44These qualities enable CARTusers to follow
dialogue more efficiently and precisely. -
1:44 - 1:47JESSIE: CART has been very helpful, like
for example -
1:47 - 1:53in a really large classroom,
it can be very noisy -
1:53 - 1:56especially with everyone just talking all
at once. -
1:56 - 2:00So, CART has really helped me
understand my classmates -
2:00 - 2:03what they are talking about, a lot better.
-
2:03 - 2:07NARRATOR: CART providers are able to
customize their services to accommodate -
2:07 - 2:10each user's needs and preferences.
-
2:10 - 2:14Text font size and text color can be modi-
fied to fit each CART user's preference. -
2:14 - 2:17When working in a live setting
providers will try to -
2:17 - 2:20position themselves so that they can
clearly hear a speaker and -
2:20 - 2:23simultaneously watch the transcription
they are producing -
2:23 - 2:26in order to correct any mistakes.
-
2:26 - 2:30There are different display options to
fit different settings, these include: -
2:30 - 2:35personal computer screens,
projection screens, television monitors, -
2:35 - 2:36and mobile devices.
-
2:36 - 2:43If CART is being used in a group setting,
a larger display can be very beneficial. -
2:43 - 2:46In classroom or workplace situations where
a user -
2:46 - 2:50needs to follow and understand complex
vocabulary -
2:50 - 2:52CART can be very advantageous.
-
2:52 - 2:57In certain settings, such as math and
science classrooms, CART's -
2:57 - 2:59word-for-word translation
is a useful resource. -
3:30 - 3:33NARRATOR: CART can be used in a
variety of settings and can be flexible -
3:33 - 3:35according to each user's needs.
-
3:35 - 3:39CART technology allows it to be used in a
mobile setting -
3:39 - 3:41such as a tour or site visit.
-
3:43 - 3:47This flexibility enables users to engage
in real-life situations -
3:47 - 3:51in which participation might otherwise
be challenging. -
4:03 - 4:08SPEAKER: So, I drew up my own peg on the
computer and printed it out. -
4:15 - 4:18NARRATOR: Upon approval, at the
end of a CART session -
4:18 - 4:22a written log of the transcription can
be sent to you and saved for studying -
4:22 - 4:24or record-keeping purposes.
-
4:38 - 4:41NARRATOR: For ASL users, there are
different ways to utilize CART -
4:41 - 4:45in a classroom setting with other
hearing individuals or instructors. -
4:45 - 4:49If an ASL interpreter is not
available when using CART, -
4:49 - 4:52an option is to type replies on a
laptop computer for the CART -
4:52 - 4:54provider or your seatmate to voice.
-
4:54 - 4:58CART can also be used in a teleconference
setting, allowing a user to join -
4:58 - 5:01a conference call using
a remote CART provider. -
5:01 - 5:05In this situation, the CART provider and
user both remotely join the conference -
5:05 - 5:10call and the user receives a live trans-
cription of the teleconference on their -
5:10 - 5:15internet-enabled computer.There are
other speech-to-text services available. -
5:15 - 5:18C-Print is a realtime speech-to-text
translation service. -
5:18 - 5:20It uses a meaning-for-meaning translation
system. -
5:20 - 5:24This allows it to summarize a large amount
of information very quickly. -
5:24 - 5:28TypeWell works in a similar
fashion to C-Print, providing -
5:28 - 5:29meaning-for-meaning transcription.
-
5:29 - 5:32Both services can be useful
depending on the situation, -
5:32 - 5:35but do not provide word-for-word
transcription as CART does. -
5:35 - 5:39Automatic Speech Recognition, or ASR, uses
-
5:39 - 5:43an electronic device to capture speech and
then internally translate it into text. -
5:43 - 5:47It promises to become an effective
independent translation source, -
5:47 - 5:52but at the present time variables such as
noise, pronunciation, pitch, -
5:52 - 5:55volume, and accents can disrupt
the automatic translation process -
5:55 - 5:58and make the transcript difficult to read.
-
5:58 - 6:02CART and other similar transcription
services provide many benefits, including -
6:02 - 6:05equal communication access and
independence, -
6:05 - 6:08while fostering full participation in
a variety of settings. -
6:08 - 6:12Students, professionals, and others
that are deaf or hard-of-hearing -
6:12 - 6:15can benefit from the versatility and
comprehension offered by realtime -
6:15 - 6:17transcription services.
-
6:17 - 6:22JESSIE: I really like CART, it is very
helpful, especially in really loud -
6:22 - 6:26and noisy environments, and especially
when your teacher or classmates are -
6:26 - 6:29talking very quickly.
-
6:29 - 6:33Or if you cannot hear everything correctly
one-hundred percent of the time. -
6:48 - 6:53D'WAYNE: With CART, I'm able to be
active and be engaged -
6:53 - 6:56fully in whatever the subject is.
