How to humor your stress | Loretta LaRoche | TEDxNewBedford
-
0:12 - 0:15Well, I've been teaching
stress management -
0:15 - 0:17for a good 30 years,
-
0:18 - 0:19and I have to tell you:
-
0:19 - 0:21people are going insane.
-
0:21 - 0:23(Laughter)
-
0:23 - 0:25It's just unbelievable, isn't it?
-
0:26 - 0:29I mean, I think about my origins.
-
0:29 - 0:31I'm a Sicilian girl from Brooklyn
-
0:32 - 0:36and was born into this Italian family
with a lot of drama. -
0:36 - 0:37A lot of drama.
-
0:37 - 0:39I mean, you know, it's like an opera.
-
0:40 - 0:41You take the garbage out,
-
0:41 - 0:45you've got to go, "Oh,
taking the garbage out, oohhhhh!" -
0:46 - 0:49And you've got to kiss everybody
because you might not come back. -
0:49 - 0:50Who knows?
-
0:50 - 0:51(Laughter)
-
0:54 - 0:57But the word "stress"
didn't even exist then. -
0:57 - 0:59Nobody talked about stress.
-
0:59 - 1:00There was a depression.
-
1:00 - 1:02There was World War II.
-
1:02 - 1:05My grandmother had three sons in the army,
-
1:05 - 1:09and she was always suffering
because of that - Sicilian martyrdom. -
1:09 - 1:12Every time I looked at her: "Oh I suffer!"
-
1:12 - 1:13(Laughter)
-
1:14 - 1:15But we laughed a lot.
-
1:15 - 1:19You know what else we did?
We ate a lot. -
1:19 - 1:22We ate, and when we were eating,
we practiced to eat again. -
1:22 - 1:25We talked about eating all the time.
-
1:25 - 1:26(Laughter)
-
1:26 - 1:31We had some fun amidst the angst
that was going on. -
1:31 - 1:34And people seemed
to just roll with the punches. -
1:34 - 1:37I mean, they accepted the reality,
-
1:37 - 1:41and they had a community of people
that helped them. -
1:41 - 1:43They were called neighbors.
You remember them? -
1:43 - 1:45(Laughter)
-
1:45 - 1:49Nobody comes to your house any more
with a sausage or a meatball. -
1:49 - 1:50(Laughter)
-
1:51 - 1:54Because, you know,
what if your LDL is too high? -
1:54 - 1:55(Laughter)
-
1:55 - 1:58Or something might go wrong, you know.
-
1:58 - 1:59And who are these people, anyway?
-
1:59 - 2:02You see them coming
to the door, you "Aaaah!" -
2:02 - 2:03(Laughter)
-
2:03 - 2:06"I don't want to see any people!
I have my show to watch tonight. -
2:06 - 2:07(Laughter)
-
2:07 - 2:09The one with neighbors in it.
-
2:09 - 2:10(Laughter)
-
2:15 - 2:18I don't ever remember my grandmother
standing in front of the sink, going, -
2:18 - 2:21"O Madonna mia! I'm so stressed!
-
2:23 - 2:24I can't take it no more.
-
2:25 - 2:27I got to go to my spin class.
-
2:27 - 2:29(Laughter)
-
2:30 - 2:32Maybe I forgot
my kale smoothie this morning, -
2:32 - 2:34(Laughter)
-
2:34 - 2:36and I don't know where my Fitbit is."
-
2:36 - 2:37(Laughter)
-
2:43 - 2:45We have gotten to a place
-
2:45 - 2:49where we don't know
how to see humor in our lives, -
2:49 - 2:52because we don't have
those people stopping by - -
2:52 - 2:55the characters that were once in my life
-
2:55 - 2:57that provided me
with historical references -
2:57 - 3:00that I could put in my books.
-
3:00 - 3:03We don't have those meals together
like we often did, -
3:03 - 3:06where we talked and laughed
and shared stories. -
3:06 - 3:10And if you acted up - huh, lots of luck!
-
3:10 - 3:11(Laughter)
-
3:11 - 3:14You got told, "What's wrong with you?"
-
3:15 - 3:17And I went to Catholic school.
-
3:17 - 3:20I had the Sisters
of Perpetual Mood Disorder. -
3:20 - 3:21(Laughter)
-
3:23 - 3:26Trust me, they didn't let you
get away with anything. -
3:29 - 3:30And, you know,
-
3:30 - 3:33that's all part of understanding
how to humor your stress, isn't it? -
3:33 - 3:36To have people around to guide you,
-
3:36 - 3:38to laugh with you,
-
3:38 - 3:40to make light of things here and there
-
3:40 - 3:43instead of all this drama
we go around with now, don't we? -
3:43 - 3:45Isn't there a lot of drama?
-
3:46 - 3:49Everybody's got to tell you
what's happening. -
3:49 - 3:51Facebook is full of stories:
-
3:51 - 3:54"Oooh! You should see what happened!
-
3:55 - 3:56I was in traffic!"
-
3:56 - 3:57(Laughter)
-
3:58 - 4:02"Oh, here's a picture of me
going through the E-ZPass." -
4:02 - 4:03(Laughter)
-
4:07 - 4:09This is pathetic, folks.
-
4:09 - 4:11Pathetic, isn't it?
-
4:12 - 4:14We don't have a life anymore.
-
4:14 - 4:16Because in our life,
-
4:16 - 4:18we have become human doings.
-
4:18 - 4:20We're no longer human beings.
-
4:20 - 4:23We have to tell everybody we meet
what we're doing. -
4:23 - 4:25That's why we're so stressed out.
-
4:25 - 4:26Everybody we meet:
-
4:26 - 4:29"You know, you know what I'm doing?
-
4:29 - 4:31Do you know how busy I am?
-
4:31 - 4:33I am so busy I don't know what to do!“
-
4:33 - 4:34(Laughter)
-
4:34 - 4:37Well, maybe you should shut up.
Maybe that would help. -
4:37 - 4:39(Laughter)
-
4:40 - 4:41Just shut up.
-
4:41 - 4:43(Laughter)
-
4:45 - 4:46But now the person you've told -
-
4:46 - 4:48hey, they have to ramp it up!
-
4:48 - 4:50(Laughter)
-
4:50 - 4:51They've got to win this contest,
-
4:51 - 4:52for God's sake!
-
4:52 - 4:54(Laughter)
-
4:54 - 4:55So they have to say,
-
4:55 - 4:57"You think you're busy?
-
4:57 - 4:58You should see how busy I am!"
-
4:58 - 5:00(Laughter)
-
5:00 - 5:03Now you have nowhere to go
but your physical ailments. -
5:03 - 5:04(Laughter)
-
5:05 - 5:07You have to share them:
-
5:07 - 5:11"Well, my back hurts,
my front hurts, my side. -
5:11 - 5:14And I don't go to the bathroom
very much any more." -
5:14 - 5:15(Laughter)
-
5:16 - 5:19And I have to tell you
that the more stressed you are, -
5:19 - 5:21the more you're going to need a laxative.
-
5:21 - 5:23(Laughter)
-
5:23 - 5:25We are one of the few countries -
-
5:25 - 5:27and I've been in many places
in the world – -
5:27 - 5:28that have so many laxatives.
-
5:28 - 5:29(Laughter)
-
5:29 - 5:31Why do you think that is?
-
5:32 - 5:34Look at people's faces,
and you'll find out. -
5:34 - 5:35(Laughter)
-
5:37 - 5:40People walk around like this all day long,
-
5:41 - 5:43squeezing and squeezing and squeezing.
-
5:43 - 5:44(Laughter)
-
5:48 - 5:51By the time they go to bed at night,
they look like dead parrots. -
5:51 - 5:52(Laughter)
-
5:57 - 6:00We have problems with insomnia.
-
6:00 - 6:03More people are medicated now,
taking sleeping medications. -
6:03 - 6:07We have more people on antidepressants
than any other place in the world. -
6:07 - 6:09We even have children on antidepressants
-
6:09 - 6:11because we can't leave them alone either.
-
6:11 - 6:13(Laughter)
-
6:13 - 6:15God forbid they should go out and play.
-
6:15 - 6:18Go out and play? What? Are you serious?
-
6:18 - 6:20I'm going to make an app
that has a squirrel on it -
6:20 - 6:22so the kids can see that.
-
6:22 - 6:24(Laughter)
-
6:25 - 6:27I'll probably make a fortune.
-
6:27 - 6:28(Laughter)
-
6:29 - 6:31You can't even ride your bike
up and down anymore. -
6:31 - 6:33You've got to wear a NASA astronaut suit.
-
6:33 - 6:35(Laughter)
-
6:37 - 6:39You've got to wash yourself with Purell.
-
6:39 - 6:41You've got to have a healthy snack.
-
6:41 - 6:43No wonder the kids are stressed.
-
6:43 - 6:45I used to drink out of the hose.
-
6:45 - 6:46(Laughter)
-
6:47 - 6:49And I'm still alive.
-
6:49 - 6:50(Laughter)
-
6:50 - 6:52(Cheers) (Applause)
-
6:57 - 7:01I even fell off my bike, lots of times.
-
7:01 - 7:02(Laughter)
-
7:02 - 7:03It's kind of sad, isn't it?
-
7:03 - 7:06Kids don't know how to be kids anymore,
-
7:06 - 7:09human beings don't know
how to be human beings anymore, -
7:09 - 7:11because we're all stressed.
-
7:12 - 7:15It's become a metaphor
for existence, hasn't it? -
7:15 - 7:19So I just want to start
by taking you on a journey - -
7:19 - 7:20perhaps to de-stress -
-
7:20 - 7:22with a simple little survey.
-
7:22 - 7:26How many of you've been stressed
the past week? Raise your hand. -
7:26 - 7:28Past several weeks?
-
7:30 - 7:31Past month?
-
7:32 - 7:34Several months?
-
7:34 - 7:36Several years?
-
7:36 - 7:37(Laughter)
-
7:37 - 7:39Lifetime?
-
7:39 - 7:40(Laughter)
-
7:42 - 7:44Now, when we're stressed, what do we do?
-
7:44 - 7:46We like to tell people.
-
7:46 - 7:47And we form groups,
-
7:48 - 7:50global whining groups.
-
7:50 - 7:51(Laughter)
-
7:51 - 7:54We get together in our offices,
in our home - wherever. -
7:54 - 7:57Some people, before they leave the house,
will tell their family: -
7:57 - 8:00"I'm going to be tired when I get back."
-
8:00 - 8:01(Laughter)
-
8:03 - 8:05This is a form of pre-suffering.
-
8:05 - 8:06(Laughter)
-
8:08 - 8:10You're not tired yet, but you will be.
-
8:10 - 8:11(Laughter)
-
8:11 - 8:15Now, my suggestion is,
when you're stressed like this, -
8:15 - 8:17give yourself a standing ovation.
-
8:17 - 8:19Ask for one.
-
8:19 - 8:22Maybe when you go in your office,
you walk in and you say, -
8:22 - 8:23"I came in.
-
8:23 - 8:25(Laughter)
-
8:25 - 8:26I'd like a standing ovation."
-
8:26 - 8:28(Laughter)
-
8:30 - 8:31Why not?!
-
8:32 - 8:34When you go home tonight,
-
8:34 - 8:36some of you have already
made yourself crazy -
8:36 - 8:40by thinking about what went on
while you weren't there. -
8:40 - 8:41(Laughter)
-
8:42 - 8:45What's the difference?
Something went on. -
8:46 - 8:50When you walk in the door tonight,
go in and say, "I'm back. -
8:50 - 8:52I could have gone someplace else.
-
8:52 - 8:53(Laughter)
-
8:55 - 8:57You're damn lucky I came home.
-
8:57 - 8:58(Laughter)
-
8:59 - 9:01I'd like a standing ovation."
-
9:01 - 9:02(Laughter)
-
9:04 - 9:07So with that in mind,
I want every one of you to stand up -
9:07 - 9:10and give yourselves
a standing ovation right now. -
9:10 - 9:12(Applause) (Cheering)
-
9:15 - 9:17Woo hoo hoo hoo!
-
9:20 - 9:21Yahoo!
-
9:27 - 9:28That was awesome.
-
9:29 - 9:32Now, that's one step
in the right direction. -
9:33 - 9:35The second thing you have to do
-
9:35 - 9:41is realize we have 60,000 thoughts
that go through our brains every day, -
9:41 - 9:43most of which are there to disturb you.
-
9:45 - 9:49A lot of us are always thinking about
the worst possible scenario, aren't we? -
9:49 - 9:51"Oh my God, what's going to happen?"
-
9:51 - 9:55And, of course, the fear messages
that come across with the media today -
9:55 - 9:57just enhance that, don't they?
-
9:57 - 10:01A lot of you are crazy enough
to put the news on in the morning. -
10:01 - 10:02(Laughter)
-
10:03 - 10:06And we have to know what the weather is.
-
10:06 - 10:07When I was growing up,
-
10:07 - 10:09you know how you found out
what the weather was like? -
10:09 - 10:11You looked out of the window.
-
10:11 - 10:13You said, "Oh, it's raining."
-
10:13 - 10:15Not now. You put it on.
-
10:15 - 10:16You have to know it's raining,
-
10:16 - 10:18what the dew point is,
-
10:18 - 10:20and if there's some kind of thing -
-
10:20 - 10:21a lot of rain -
-
10:21 - 10:26you have to watch some idiot anchorperson
by the ocean with an umbrella. -
10:26 - 10:28(Laughter)
-
10:32 - 10:35Then, if it's nice here,
they tell you where it's awful. -
10:36 - 10:37(Laughter)
-
10:38 - 10:44So you have to start your day
always catastrophizing and awfulizing. -
10:44 - 10:49That's a term that was developed
by Dr. Albert Ellis, -
10:49 - 10:51the author of rational emotive therapy.
-
10:52 - 10:56And many of us are catastrophizing
and awfulizing every day, aren't we? -
10:57 - 10:58We get in our car,
-
10:58 - 11:02and we just can't take the fact
that there's traffic. -
11:03 - 11:05Every time I went for a ride
with one of my husbands, -
11:05 - 11:07and I've had two -
-
11:07 - 11:08(Laughter)
-
11:08 - 11:10I call them my "was-bands" -
-
11:10 - 11:12(Laughter)
-
11:15 - 11:17the first thing they'd say is
-
11:17 - 11:19"Where did all these cars come from?"
-
11:19 - 11:20(Laughter)
-
11:20 - 11:21It's a road.
-
11:21 - 11:22(Laughter)
-
11:26 - 11:27I said, "Let's go home.
-
11:27 - 11:29Let's go in the driveway.
-
11:29 - 11:31We'll just go up and down.
We won't leave. -
11:31 - 11:32(Laughter)
-
11:37 - 11:42See, the only way
to de-stress and use humor -
11:42 - 11:44is to move away from yourself,
-
11:44 - 11:46to become the witness to your behavior.
-
11:46 - 11:48That's a very Buddhist kind of mindset.
-
11:48 - 11:50Become the witness to your own behavior.
-
11:50 - 11:53Think about what you're thinking about.
-
11:53 - 11:55Is it realistic?
-
11:55 - 11:59You're in a car, asking yourself
where the cars came from. -
11:59 - 12:01It's an idiotic question.
-
12:01 - 12:02(Laughter)
-
12:02 - 12:03You might want to ask yourself,
-
12:03 - 12:05"Gee, I wonder why I said that?
-
12:05 - 12:07(Laughter)
-
12:07 - 12:09This doesn't make any sense."
-
12:10 - 12:14And then we try to ramp it up
and make it as bad as possible, -
12:14 - 12:16and we torture the person next to us.
-
12:16 - 12:18"Did you see all the cars?"
-
12:18 - 12:19(Laughter)
-
12:20 - 12:22"No, I'm an idiot. I didn't notice."
-
12:22 - 12:23(Laughter)
-
12:26 - 12:28How many of you do this
when you go food shopping? -
12:28 - 12:31I've stood in line with people
who are harrumphing -
12:31 - 12:34and pawing the earth like bison
-
12:34 - 12:35(Laughter)
-
12:37 - 12:39and going insane,
-
12:39 - 12:42asking stupid questions again.
-
12:42 - 12:45Like, "Oh! Oh! Look at
all these people in the store! -
12:45 - 12:46(Laughter)
-
12:46 - 12:48I wonder why they're here now?"
-
12:48 - 12:49(Laughter)
-
12:52 - 12:54See the Seinfeld's part in this.
-
12:54 - 12:56Ask yourself, "Why am I saying this?"
-
12:56 - 12:59People go shopping at odd hours.
-
12:59 - 13:00There is no plot.
-
13:00 - 13:03They're not here to take revenge on me.
-
13:03 - 13:04(Laughter)
-
13:08 - 13:12Can you imagine what the world
would be like if we lightened up? -
13:12 - 13:14What if we lightened up?
-
13:14 - 13:16What if every one of you
-
13:16 - 13:20realized that you were the joke
"koo, koo, kajoo"? -
13:20 - 13:21(Laughter)
-
13:23 - 13:26Imagine what fun we could have
with people that we met -
13:26 - 13:31if we started listening to our dialogue
instead of taking it so seriously. -
13:32 - 13:35Because if you think the worst
and get the worst, you suffer twice. -
13:36 - 13:39If you think the best and get the worst,
you only suffer once. -
13:39 - 13:40(Laughter)
-
13:40 - 13:44But I think a lot of us like to suffer.
What do you think? -
13:44 - 13:46Yes! And let's face it -
-
13:47 - 13:50it isn't just something
that we do on purpose. -
13:50 - 13:54Some of us have overreactive
parts of our brain. -
13:55 - 13:57And they've noticed
-
13:57 - 14:01that when Buddhist monks
have meditated since they were children, -
14:01 - 14:05that part of their brain
is not as reactive. -
14:05 - 14:08And that's sort of innate
to a lot of us, isn't it? -
14:08 - 14:11Because we're born
with that predisposition. -
14:12 - 14:17People in my family, all the women,
have had panic attacks, including myself. -
14:17 - 14:19The wonder of my journey
-
14:19 - 14:22is that I have been able
to teach other people -
14:22 - 14:25the things that I needed to learn.
-
14:26 - 14:29And I continue to try to do that
-
14:29 - 14:31because as you get older -
-
14:31 - 14:34and I was 77 a couple of months ago ...
-
14:34 - 14:35(Applause)
-
14:38 - 14:39Thank you. I'm still alive!
-
14:39 - 14:41Ha ha ha ha!
-
14:41 - 14:42(Laughter)
-
14:44 - 14:46That's what people come up to me and say:
-
14:46 - 14:47"Oh, you're still doing this?"
-
14:47 - 14:49I said, "Yeah, I'm not dead yet, OK?"
-
14:49 - 14:51(Laughter)
-
14:51 - 14:57One of my greatest visions
is to see the world lighten up. -
14:57 - 15:00Because if each and every one of us
had a light heart, -
15:00 - 15:03we could share it
with others, couldn't we? -
15:03 - 15:05And our energy in this world would change.
-
15:06 - 15:09So many times when we engage
with each other, -
15:09 - 15:14it's out of - I don't know - necessity
to get out of the place we're in. -
15:14 - 15:16We don't even know
where we are half the time, -
15:16 - 15:19because we're always thinking
where we're going next. -
15:19 - 15:21We don't even enjoy the moments,
-
15:21 - 15:23because we have to take selfies
of the moments we're in -
15:23 - 15:24(Laughter)
-
15:24 - 15:27so we can watch the moment later.
-
15:27 - 15:28(Laughter)
-
15:29 - 15:34There are so many ways that
we can get through this life and laugh, -
15:35 - 15:37and one of them
is to just laugh on purpose. -
15:37 - 15:38Just crack yourself up!
-
15:38 - 15:40(Laughter)
-
15:40 - 15:42Have a staff-laugh at work!
-
15:43 - 15:45Sit with your friends and laugh!
-
15:45 - 15:48I mean, some people haven't had
a good laugh for years, -
15:48 - 15:50because they're riding
with a committee in their head - -
15:51 - 15:52people who told them,
-
15:52 - 15:54"Wipe that stupid grin off your face!
-
15:55 - 15:57You think this is funny?
-
15:57 - 15:58(Laughter)
-
15:58 - 16:02When are you going to control yourself
so you can be like me - you see how I am? -
16:02 - 16:04(Laughter)
-
16:06 - 16:08Because you got to grow up
and be an adult -
16:08 - 16:10and squeeze a lot, squeeze."
-
16:10 - 16:11(Laughter)
-
16:15 - 16:17So consider another option,
-
16:17 - 16:18Smile.
-
16:18 - 16:21Smile often. Smile at your fellow human.
-
16:21 - 16:23You know, when you're going
through the counter -
16:23 - 16:25and you're paying for your groceries:
-
16:25 - 16:26"Hey, hey - check me out!"
-
16:26 - 16:28(Laughter)
-
16:30 - 16:33Become the fun you're seeking!
-
16:33 - 16:34So many of us are waiting for the fun.
-
16:34 - 16:36You are the fun.
-
16:36 - 16:42And smiling at one another creates a sense
of lightness around you, doesn't it? -
16:43 - 16:44I talk to everybody.
-
16:44 - 16:46I don't care whether
they want to hear me or not. -
16:46 - 16:47(Laughter)
-
16:47 - 16:53I just know that I want to enjoy
whatever life I have left on this planet. -
16:53 - 16:56So, another couple of things
I want to share with you -
16:56 - 16:58before my time is up -
-
16:58 - 17:00and it's not up totally yet.
-
17:00 - 17:03Buy yourself a little red nose.
-
17:04 - 17:06Try complaining with this nose on.
-
17:06 - 17:07(Laughter)
-
17:10 - 17:11Walk into a store.
-
17:11 - 17:13(Laughter)
-
17:13 - 17:15Say "I don't see anybody here.
Where are they?" -
17:15 - 17:17(Laughter)
-
17:23 - 17:26If you're in a relationship,
and your partner wants to get amorous, -
17:26 - 17:27and you're not in the mood,
-
17:27 - 17:28(Laughter)
-
17:28 - 17:30put your nose on.
-
17:30 - 17:31(Laughter)
-
17:31 - 17:34Say "Why don't you start without me?
-
17:34 - 17:35(Laughter)
-
17:37 - 17:39When it sounds good, I'll be in."
-
17:39 - 17:40(Laughter)
-
17:41 - 17:42(Audience member) Wooh!
-
17:42 - 17:44Ha ha ha ha!
-
17:44 - 17:48Hey, who knows, 50 shades of grey -
50 shades of noses, I don't know. -
17:48 - 17:49(Laughter)
-
17:51 - 17:55If you like to pre-suffer, and you have
a psychic mentality, put this on. -
17:55 - 17:58Get yourself a little costume
like this and put it on. -
17:59 - 18:01Start a psychic booth.
-
18:01 - 18:02(Laughter)
-
18:02 - 18:05Go into work and say:
"It's going to be a bad day." -
18:05 - 18:06(Laughter)
-
18:09 - 18:11"Next week it's going to get worse."
-
18:11 - 18:13(Laughter)
-
18:13 - 18:16If someone says it's a beautiful day -
"It's going to rain Friday." -
18:16 - 18:17(Laughter)
-
18:17 - 18:20How many people do you know like this?
-
18:20 - 18:22It's like why suffer in advance?
-
18:22 - 18:24(Laughter)
-
18:24 - 18:27You know, we don't have
that much time, as I said before. -
18:27 - 18:29We're all going to go to another place.
-
18:29 - 18:31Enjoy it.
-
18:31 - 18:33You don't have to be
a perfectionist at everything. -
18:33 - 18:35You don't have to be a martyr.
-
18:35 - 18:37You don't have to be a control freak.
-
18:37 - 18:39Tamp it down.
-
18:39 - 18:41I've never walked through
a cemetery that said, -
18:41 - 18:44"Did everything. Died anyway."
-
18:44 - 18:45(Laughter)
-
18:50 - 18:52And if nothing that I've said works -
-
18:52 - 18:55I love this, this is a great metaphor.
-
18:55 - 18:56You want to drive yourself crazy?
-
18:56 - 18:58Get a whip.
-
18:58 - 19:00Use it when you wake up in the morning.
-
19:00 - 19:02Start right in: "Oh, it's raining.
-
19:02 - 19:03(Laughter)
-
19:05 - 19:07Oh, I'm so bloated.
-
19:07 - 19:08(Laughter)
-
19:09 - 19:11Oh, I'm still married to you?"
-
19:11 - 19:12(Laughter)
-
19:14 - 19:16Take it to work.
-
19:16 - 19:19There are people there that you know
were brought in to disturb you. -
19:19 - 19:22Go right up to them,
say "I was fine until I saw you." -
19:22 - 19:23(Laughter)
-
19:27 - 19:29Now you've given up your power,
-
19:30 - 19:32and you've lost your sense of humor.
-
19:33 - 19:37So I hope you will go out
into the world, especially tonight, -
19:37 - 19:40because some people will start right in
as soon as they leave: -
19:40 - 19:42"Oh, it's dark.
-
19:42 - 19:43(Laughter)
-
19:44 - 19:45Oh my God! It got dark!
-
19:45 - 19:46(Laughter)
-
19:46 - 19:47Can you believe it?"
-
19:47 - 19:50No, I didn't believe it
until you told me. Now I know. -
19:50 - 19:51(Laughter)
-
19:53 - 19:56"And where's the car?
Can we find it?" -
19:56 - 19:59"No, we're going to sleep
here on the sidewalk tonight." -
19:59 - 20:00(Laughter)
-
20:00 - 20:01Ha ha ha ha!
-
20:02 - 20:05You've got to see the funny.
You really do. -
20:05 - 20:07It's the best revenge, folks.
-
20:08 - 20:10And it's a wonderful connection
-
20:10 - 20:12because when you can laugh at yourself,
-
20:12 - 20:14it shows your humility.
-
20:14 - 20:17And it really breeds
connection to all of us. -
20:17 - 20:20Because we're all vulnerable,
aren't we? -
20:20 - 20:22We're all vulnerable.
-
20:22 - 20:24So, thank you so very much.
-
20:24 - 20:27I hope you have a wonderful,
wonderful rest of your life. -
20:27 - 20:28Thank you. Thank you.
-
20:28 - 20:29(Applause) (Cheering)
-
20:29 - 20:30Thank you.
-
20:30 - 20:31(Applause)
- Title:
- How to humor your stress | Loretta LaRoche | TEDxNewBedford

-
Don't believe everything you think! Many of our thoughts can be the source of amusement if we learn how to discover our inner sitcom. Life does not have to be a stress rehearsal. When we explore how to "lighten up," we also help to "lighten up" the world.
