Today on Hope Sabbath School,

we're going to be talking
about intimations of hope,

glimmers of hope even in a difficult time,
-

which will change our
hearts and give us courage.

I'm glad you joined us in our

-

What a series this has been,
-

and we've been looking for hope all along.
-

We found it in a living
connection with God, right?

And here's Job who doesn't
even know about Jesus.
-
Not Synced
We have the advantage
of the full revelation
-

of the character of God in the
Person of Jesus our Savior,
-
Not Synced
but there is hope, even
in the challenging times,
-
Not Synced
and we're so thankful for that today.
-

And we're glad you've joined us for our
study wherever you are around the world.
-

We don't know how many countries are
represented, though the last statistics

were using the Android app, 137, I think,

using our IOS app, which is for

We'd love to hear from you even
if you've written to us before.

Chileshe writes from Zambia

and says, "Hi, Hope Sabbath School."
-

(Team) Hi.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) "Thanks for the amazing
Sabbath School discussions.

They are helping me grow
spiritually every week."
-

That's our prayer, isn't it?
-

"May God continue blessing
you as you help us."

I do not know, Chileshe,

our Sabbath worship because on Fridays

It helps me to teach the class
in a very interesting way."
-
Not Synced
And Samuel says, "I'm a
high school teacher,"
-

so we are teaching teachers
to teach the Word.
-

Isn't that awesome?
-

at least the words are.

but I love this promise,

Psalm 27:13,14, "unless I had believed

that I would see the goodness of
the Lord in the land of the living.

Lord God, we thank You that

a light to our path.

that we would have that living connection

(Derek) Well, we're in the
Book of Job, chapter 13,
-
Not Synced
and I'm always thinking

Not Synced
that people may join us
for Hope Sabbath School,
-
Not Synced
and they haven't watched the
first parts of this series.

Not Synced
You can watch it all; you can
go to our website at hopetv.org
-
Not Synced
and watch all of the programs,
-
Not Synced
but let's just catch up
on the story of Job,
-
Not Synced
and, Brittany, just a quick summary.
-
Not Synced
Here's a man,
-
Not Synced
tell us a little bit about
him and what happens to him.
-
Not Synced
(Brittany) Sure, Job started out as a
famous and wealthy man of the East,
-
Not Synced
and God even called him blameless.
-
Not Synced
He had multiple possessions, ten children,
-
Not Synced
and just was very blessed.
-
Not Synced
But then there was a heavenly
council where the Devil accused God
-
Not Synced
of blessing him and that Job was only
serving God because of the blessings.
-
Not Synced
So God says, "Well, I'll
allow you to test him,"
-
Not Synced
and then everything that Job owned
was taken away, even his children.
-
Not Synced
All ten of them died in one day.
-
Not Synced
And after that experience,
then Job was covered in boils
-
Not Synced
from his head to his toes
-
Not Synced
and was in pain and anguish and wondering,
"Why is all this happening to me?"
-
Not Synced
(Derek) So he's going through
a terrible experience,
-
Not Synced
and then three friends show up,
-
Not Synced
meaning well, Nathan, right?
-
Not Synced
And do they help the situation at all?
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) I think at first they
helped by their presence.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Okay.
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) Seven days sitting
in silence, mourning with Job,
-
Not Synced
empathizing with him.
-
Not Synced
But then when they begin to speak,
it's quite clear that their wisdom
-
Not Synced
is not heavenly wisdom.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) What did they basically say?
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) They were basically
saying, "Job, whatever you did
-
Not Synced
has brought this upon you.
-
Not Synced
You have done something wrong.
-
Not Synced
No one else knows about it because
you look good on the outside,
-
Not Synced
but God's punishing you
for what you've done."
-
Not Synced
(Derek) And remember that
startling comment of Zophar?
-
Not Synced
What did he say?
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) "You deserve worse than this."
-
Not Synced
(Derek) "You deserve worse than
this, if the truth were known."
-
Not Synced
And that's speaking to a man that
the Lord Himself called what?
-
Not Synced
(Team) Blameless and upright.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Blameless and upright!
-
Not Synced
So Job is confused; he doesn't understand.
-
Not Synced
We're going to Job chapter 13 now,
-
Not Synced
and Puia, if you'd begin our study
today with the first four verses.
-
Not Synced
I'd like you to tell us after he speaks,
before we talk about his comments,
-
Not Synced
what do you think he's
experiencing on the inside now?
-
Not Synced
He's kind of going through a
very difficult time, Job 13:1-4.
-
Not Synced
(Puia) I'll be reading from
the New King James Version:
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Okay,
-
Not Synced
Well, at first he said the Lord
gives, the Lord takes away;
-
Not Synced
blessed be the name of the Lord.
-
Not Synced
Someone said in our study, he's
holding onto the promise, though maybe
-
Not Synced
a little bit in denial about everything
that's really happened to him.
-
Not Synced
Nathan, where do you see him here?
-
Not Synced
Whew, that's pretty strong
language here, isn't it?
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) Yeah, and I
was just thinking that
-
Not Synced
we can't miss what he said in verse two.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Okay.
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) When he says, "What you know,
I also know; I am not inferior to you."
-
Not Synced
Sometimes, meaning well, we
can speak down to people,
-
Not Synced
make them feel inferior or like, "I
really have greater spiritual insight
-
Not Synced
than you do; let me help
you straighten out here."
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Okay.
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) That's really not helpful.
-
Not Synced
And we have to be careful that
we don't condescend to people.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Condescending, like we're
looking down, treating them as inferior.
-
Not Synced
They had good intentions, right?
-
Not Synced
We know that from the beginning; they
sat for a whole week with him, right?
-
Not Synced
But there's something there that's wrong.
-
Not Synced
How would you describe what's
happening on the inside?
-
Not Synced
Anybody?
-
Not Synced
What emotions are going
on there, do you think?
-
Not Synced
Jason?
-
Not Synced
(Jason) He sounds angry.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) He sounds angry about their
attitude; in fact, doesn't he call them
-
Not Synced
worthless physicians?
-
Not Synced
"Forgers of lies."
-
Not Synced
He's angry.
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) He also seem to be helpless.
-
Not Synced
He wants to speak to God; he
wants to reason with God.
-
Not Synced
He's like, "Here I am; I'm a helpless
victim, and I can't even speak my case."
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Okay.
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) Or present my case.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Is he just angry?
-
Not Synced
Is there anything else going
on here, do you think?
-
Not Synced
Defensive a little bit, like
wanting to present his case.
-
Not Synced
He certainly wants to speak to God.
-
Not Synced
__14:14(Joshua) But he's depressed as well.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) You think he's depressed as well.
-
Not Synced
He's not in denial about
what's happened, right?
-
Not Synced
So, the good news is that God loves him!
-
Not Synced
But he's struggling with why these
things are happening to him.
-
Not Synced
So let me ask a question.
-
Not Synced
Sometimes when people are hurting,
-
Not Synced
especially if we're not that helpful,
-
Not Synced
but even if we are helpful,
they can kind of lash out at us
-
Not Synced
because they're hurting so much, you know?
-
Not Synced
"Let me help you with that bandage,"
you know, and they're like, "Aah!"
-
Not Synced
Does that make sense to you?
-
Not Synced
Have you ever met people like that?
-
Not Synced
The're hurting so much they don't
want you to get near to them.
-
Not Synced
So how do we show God's love to
someone who's at that level of pain?
-
Not Synced
What do you think?
-
Not Synced
What can we do for them?
-
Not Synced
Jonathan.
-
Not Synced
(Jonathan) I think it's helpful
to try to take time to understand
-
Not Synced
where someone's reactions
are coming from.
-
Not Synced
From personal experience, I've been in
situations where I haven't been able
-
Not Synced
to act in quite the way that I wanted to,
and some people are able to understand
-
Not Synced
that and give me grace, and others
don't quite understand that.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) So kind of thinking, you
know, there's a saying in America
-
Not Synced
about walking in someone
else's shoes, right?
-
Not Synced
In other words, take some time,
probably before I open my mouth, right?
-
Not Synced
Anybody else?
-
Not Synced
Someone's really hurting.
-
Not Synced
He's pretty angry here.
-
Not Synced
How would you approach someone
with that level of anger, Puia?
-
Not Synced
(Puia) I think it's important for us,
first of all, to ask God to give us
-
Not Synced
heavenly wisdom in how to approach them.
-
Not Synced
I think that would be the first step.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) What would be my human reaction,
if I didn't pray and think about it,
-
Not Synced
when someone was kind of
lashing out like that?
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) You'd take it personally
and think they're angry at you.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Okay, I could take it personally.
-
Not Synced
What else might I do?
-
Not Synced
(Team Member) You'd want to stay away.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Stay away, that's right, "I'm
just going to leave you," you know?
-
Not Synced
"You can take care of it by yourself."
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) Or even worse,
you might strike back.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Or you might try to strike back.
-
Not Synced
And none of those is helpful; withdrawing,
just to protect myself is not helpful;
-
Not Synced
striking back is not helpful.
-
Not Synced
So I've got to pray, "Lord, show me here."
-
Not Synced
But let me understand, like Jonathan
said, what the person's going through,
-
Not Synced
so I don't come to kind
of careless conclusions.
-
Not Synced
Stephanie.
-
Not Synced
(Stephanie) And if you're the one that has
caused them to be somewhat defensive,
-
Not Synced
maybe that's where you
could be quiet, you know?
-
Not Synced
"Lord, I've said something; help
me to be more understanding
-
Not Synced
of where they're coming from."
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Okay, so let's keep reading in
Job chapter 13, verses 5 through 12,
-
Not Synced
and Timoetel, if you'd keep
reading for us in Job 13:5-12,
-
Not Synced
and let's see what part of his
comments makes sense to you.
-
Not Synced
Job's struggling, too, so I'm
not saying everything's perfect,
-
Not Synced
but what about his response
to his friends makes sense?
-
Not Synced
(Timoetel) Job 13, verses 5 to 12,
-
Not Synced
and I'll be reading from
the New King James Version:
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Was he speaking any truth there?
-
Not Synced
(Team) Yes.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) If you read the end
of the book, what happens?
-
Not Synced
(Timoetel) God rebukes them.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) God rebukes them; He says,
"You have not said what is right
-
Not Synced
about my servant Job."
-
Not Synced
So, that part, that
makes sense, doesn't it?
-
Not Synced
In fact go back to verse
5, better to do what?
-
Not Synced
(Derek, Team) Be quiet.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) And if they're saying,
"Why is this happening?"
-
Not Synced
It would be better to say, "I don't know.
-
Not Synced
I don't have an answer."
-
Not Synced
(Nathan) This is an indication,
too, of the unity of Scripture.
-
Not Synced
Job is speaking under inspiration, or
this is recorded under inspiration here
-
Not Synced
where he says, "It would be better to be
silent, and that would be your wisdom."
-
Not Synced
And in Proverbs 17:28, it basically
says that even a fool seems wise
-
Not Synced
when they keep their mouth shut.
-
Not Synced
(Derek) Right, and back to the
comment you made earlier, in Job 2
-
Not Synced
where the friends come and they're
simply silent and grieving,
-
Not Synced
that probably was some comfort
-
Not Synced
until they started speaking.
-
Not Synced
So they brought three friends together,
apparently from different territories.
-
Not Synced
They were very earnest
in wanting to help him.
-
Not Synced
But again, how do I respond
to someone who's defensive?
-
Not Synced
Let's try to understand
them, walk in their shoes.
-
Not Synced
Can you share a time
