Videoanálise - Rayforce (Arcade, Sega Saturn)
-
0:05 - 0:09>>Rafael Fernandes: 2011 was undoubtedly a year full of news for retrogamers.
-
0:09 - 0:11Among the blogs we have seen a lot of things:
-
0:11 - 0:14poorly done games, people listening to music and dying, conspiracy theories,
-
0:14 - 0:17tizzies, trollings, videos, twenty years of Sonic, new Zelda,
-
0:17 - 0:19new Streets of Rage, nipples, drunk people,
-
0:19 - 0:21[pause for breath]
-
0:21 - 0:23and memes or memes.
-
0:23 - 0:23Anyway.
-
0:24 - 0:27In a joint collaboration of the retrogamer blogosphere,
-
0:27 - 0:31I present to you some of the games that I played in this year that is ending.
-
0:31 - 0:32Are you ready then?
-
0:32 - 0:33Ready
-
0:33 - 0:34Go!
-
0:48 - 0:53What I played in 2011
-
1:02 - 1:06If there is a game that deserves the title of most played in 2011, this is RayForce.
-
1:06 - 1:10The Taito shoot 'em up from 1993 is one of the best games of the company,
-
1:10 - 1:14with considerable success in the arcades of the time and two sequels,
-
1:14 - 1:16called RayStorm and RayCrisis.
-
1:21 - 1:24It's very likely that you've heard of this game.
-
1:24 - 1:26The problem is that it can also be called Gunlock
-
1:26 - 1:30and in the port to Sega Saturn it was named Layer Section,
-
1:30 - 1:33whose American version was renamed Galactic Attack.
-
1:33 - 1:34Wow!
-
1:34 - 1:35With so much confusion,
-
1:35 - 1:38is very difficult to find even the ROM to play in MAME,
-
1:38 - 1:41unless you were actually looking for it,
-
1:41 - 1:42which was my case.
-
1:42 - 1:45RayForce differential is in the gameplay.
-
1:45 - 1:48In addition to the enemies that come in the same direction of your spacecraft,
-
1:48 - 1:49there is also a lower plane,
-
1:49 - 1:53where the player has to aim and shoot with the laser before they come toward you.
-
1:54 - 1:57It's possible to lock the target on various enemies at the same time,
-
1:57 - 2:00thus being able to make a combo and score more points.
-
2:00 - 2:03Stage bosses also have several other weaknesses
-
2:03 - 2:04that can only be hit with the laser,
-
2:04 - 2:07thus being able to set new strategies to defeat them,
-
2:07 - 2:08which are many.
-
2:38 - 2:39With this game mechanics,
-
2:39 - 2:43RayForce takes full advantage of the scale effects that the Taito F3 board had,
-
2:44 - 2:48however, the game uses a number of other visual effects such as rotation and transparency,
-
2:48 - 2:52generating images that simulate 3D and look really awesome,
-
2:52 - 2:54quite reminding Super Nintendo's Mode-7,
-
2:54 - 2:56but much better.
-
2:56 - 2:58It's also worth mentioning the game's story:
-
2:58 - 3:00according to the subsequent games,
-
3:00 - 3:04RayForce's plot is focused on the creation of a supercomputer called Con-Human,
-
3:04 - 3:08that when accidentally connected to the brain of a human clone,
-
3:08 - 3:10eventually becomes conscious and consequently
-
3:10 - 3:13destroys and annihilate much of the planet.
-
3:14 - 3:16The few survivors escape to a space colony,
-
3:16 - 3:19where they prepare an offensive to destroy the supercomputer
-
3:19 - 3:21and consequently our planet.
-
3:22 - 3:24In short, it is a suicide mission, practically,
-
3:24 - 3:27where the heroine, yes, the heroine,
-
3:27 - 3:30have to sacrifice herself in order to prevent Con-Human acquiring more power
-
3:30 - 3:32and conquer the universe.
-
3:32 - 3:33Complex, eh?
-
3:48 - 3:52Thus, the journey of the entire mission is based on a re-entry to the planet,
-
3:52 - 3:55descending by more and more deep layers
-
3:55 - 3:57to get to the core and find the supercomputer.
-
3:58 - 4:00This just shows that the game has a great design,
-
4:00 - 4:02not only in relation to the story,
-
4:02 - 4:05but also the stages and enemies, especially the bosses,
-
4:05 - 4:07that seem having come out of an anime.
-
4:08 - 4:10The only weak point in this regard is that the game itself,
-
4:10 - 4:14being an arcade, has no indication of its complex story,
-
4:14 - 4:17leaving players without really knowing what would be the reason
-
4:17 - 4:19for all the conflict that happens the game.
-
4:24 - 4:28But the main reason I played RayForce throughout this year is on the soundtrack.
-
4:29 - 4:31All the songs were composed by this lady there,
-
4:31 - 4:33called Tamayo Kawamoto.
-
4:48 - 4:51She began her career in Capcom composing for games like Son Son,
-
4:51 - 4:54Legendary Wings and Ghosts ‘n Goblins! Yeah!
-
4:55 - 4:56But here in RayForce,
-
4:56 - 5:00she produced a perfect blend of jazz, new age and electronic music,
-
5:00 - 5:04that I believe it was the first time a shoot 'em up used songs in that style,
-
5:04 - 5:07since prior to 1993 shmups
-
5:07 - 5:10had a soundtrack more focused on the rock and the jazz fusion.
-
5:15 - 5:19It's worth remembering that the soundtrack of the arcade version has a different sound,
-
5:19 - 5:20more muffled,
-
5:20 - 5:24so that it could be reproduced in the sound chip that was on the board.
-
5:24 - 5:29The Sega Saturn version has the songs that are possibly in their original versions,
-
5:29 - 5:34since they are the same that are on the CD of the soundtrack of the game released in 1994.
-
5:54 - 5:56Despite the different instrumentation,
-
5:56 - 5:58both compositions are still sensational.
-
6:11 - 6:14That's why I recommend to anyone to play RayForce at least once in life,
-
6:14 - 6:16either the version for MAME,
-
6:16 - 6:18that doesn't correctly emulates the sound, but it's something,
-
6:19 - 6:21or the ports for PC, Sega Saturn,
-
6:21 - 6:24and as part of the Japanese collection Taito Memories Jōkan,
-
6:25 - 6:26that was released for the PlayStation 2.
-
6:27 - 6:32The game is a unique and much better experience than its sequels RayStorm and RayCrisis,
-
6:32 - 6:33which are also very good games,
-
6:33 - 6:36but don't reach the level of fun of RayForce.
-
6:37 - 6:40But it's also worth remembering that the game is almost impossibly difficult,
-
6:40 - 6:43so much that to this day I use at least 7 coins to finish the game.
-
6:44 - 6:45That's because I'm always practicing.
-
6:46 - 6:49The difficulty of the game reaches some absurd moments and especially treacherous,
-
6:50 - 6:52partly because the enemy always fire randomly,
-
6:52 - 6:54then memorizing still helps,
-
6:54 - 6:58but what really matters here are quick reflexes to deal with the constant chaos.
-
6:59 - 7:03Still, it's a very fun experience that does not become frustrating,
-
7:03 - 7:04at least for me.
-
7:04 - 7:06Maybe I'm a masochist… But anyway.
-
7:10 - 7:12And this was the video review of RayForce.
-
7:12 - 7:13If you have enjoyed,
-
