The Naked Truth | Dr. Tawnya Pettiford-Wates | TEDxRVA
-
0:09 - 0:11Hi.
-
0:12 - 0:15Well, right here,
-
0:16 - 0:19these are my issues.
-
0:19 - 0:21Right? These are my issues.
-
0:21 - 0:24I mean, we all have them.
-
0:24 - 0:27The people sitting out here,
right next to you, -
0:27 - 0:29we all have issues.
-
0:29 - 0:32You guys have issues up there too, right?
-
0:32 - 0:36And the problem is they get in the way.
-
0:36 - 0:40They get in the way
of us relating to one another, -
0:40 - 0:43our issues.
-
0:43 - 0:46I'm working too, you know.
-
0:48 - 0:52I didn't speak to my mother
for five years. -
0:52 - 0:54It's not something I'm proud of.
-
0:54 - 0:58I've lost a lot of time
that I wish I could have now, -
0:58 - 1:00that I'll never get back.
-
1:00 - 1:03And it was because of issues.
-
1:03 - 1:08It was because I had issues,
she had issues too, -
1:08 - 1:12and even some of her issues
she gave to me. -
1:12 - 1:16So, we were sharing our issues
and they were in the middle. -
1:16 - 1:20I didn't talk to her,
but she also didn't talk to me. -
1:20 - 1:22Fortunately, though,
-
1:22 - 1:28fortunately, we were able to reconcile.
-
1:28 - 1:32Fortunately, we have a wonderful,
-
1:32 - 1:36healed and whole relationship today.
-
1:36 - 1:38And I'm very, very happy about that,
-
1:38 - 1:40because I'm also a mother
and a grandmother -
1:40 - 1:43and I couldn't even bear the thought
-
1:43 - 1:46of being separated from my children
and my grandchildren -
1:46 - 1:48for five years.
-
1:48 - 1:53So, some of these issues are personal
-
1:53 - 1:56and some of them are institutional.
-
1:56 - 1:58Some of them we can deal with,
-
1:58 - 2:03like my mother and I dealt with
because we had a relationship, -
2:03 - 2:06we had an association, we were connected
-
2:06 - 2:10and, because of that initial connection,
-
2:10 - 2:13we could reconnect and rehabilitate
-
2:13 - 2:15our relationship.
-
2:15 - 2:19We had an affiliation.
-
2:19 - 2:21The problem with these issues
-
2:21 - 2:26when you look at the institutional brand,
-
2:26 - 2:28like racism, like sexism,
-
2:28 - 2:32is that they're way bigger
than the individual. -
2:32 - 2:35And the way we tend
to sometimes want to deal with them -
2:35 - 2:37is on an individual basis,
-
2:37 - 2:40like, we get all offended, right?
-
2:40 - 2:43We get all offended,
"The race card." Right? -
2:43 - 2:45We get all offended
and we take it personal -
2:45 - 2:47the minute something comes up.
-
2:47 - 2:50Men and women do it with one another,
-
2:50 - 2:53racist people do it with one another,
-
2:53 - 2:57and the problem
is we don't have a relationship. -
2:57 - 3:02So, this idea of reconciling,
-
3:02 - 3:05settling, compromising,
having a reunion -- -
3:05 - 3:09my mother and I have a reunion
every time we get together. -
3:09 - 3:12That's because
we have a relationship, right? -
3:12 - 3:15And even with the issues,
-
3:15 - 3:17we can step over them
-
3:17 - 3:20and deal with one another,
-
3:20 - 3:22because we have that relationship.
-
3:22 - 3:26Our problem
with our institutional issues -- -
3:26 - 3:27this really came to me too:
-
3:27 - 3:31it's like you cannot redo something
-
3:31 - 3:33until you have first done it.
-
3:33 - 3:38You can't reconcile
if you haven't first "conciled", right? -
3:38 - 3:42And conciliation is the process
-
3:42 - 3:45of winning over from a state of hostility.
-
3:45 - 3:50So, we have to first have a recognition
-
3:50 - 3:54that we've got issues between us,
and guess what? -
3:54 - 3:56When you're talking about race,
-
3:56 - 3:58and racism and sexism,
-
3:58 - 4:00you're talking about legacy,
-
4:00 - 4:03you're talking about historic legacy,
-
4:03 - 4:06you're talking about issues
you don't even know you have, -
4:06 - 4:09you're talking about issues
that were passed on to you -
4:09 - 4:12just because of the ground
you're standing on. -
4:12 - 4:15You don't even know about them,
but the idea is -
4:15 - 4:18that, unless you recognize them,
-
4:18 - 4:23accept them, respect that we have
those issues between us, -
4:23 - 4:25whether they're our fault
or not our fault -- -
4:25 - 4:28they're still between us --
-
4:28 - 4:30instead of denying that they exist,
-
4:30 - 4:33instead of not believing my story,
-
4:33 - 4:36instead of when I say,
"That hurt me and this is why", -
4:36 - 4:38"No, it didn't."
-
4:38 - 4:39Yes, it did.
-
4:39 - 4:42It did because of our historic legacy.
-
4:42 - 4:47So, we have to first get to know
one another, -
4:47 - 4:48we have to first "concile",
-
4:48 - 4:53bring those desperate pieces
back together, you know, -
4:53 - 4:55or to gather for the first time,
-
4:55 - 4:58so that we can then have a relationship
-
4:58 - 5:00that then, if issues come up,
-
5:00 - 5:04then we can have a reconciliation.
-
5:04 - 5:08But first, we have to have a conciliation.
-
5:08 - 5:12I'm going to sort of put it into
a context, using a story. -
5:12 - 5:15It's a West African fable
-
5:15 - 5:20and it's called
"The Truth and The Lie." Right? -
5:20 - 5:22So, one day,
-
5:22 - 5:26The Truth went down to the river bank
-
5:26 - 5:31to bathe in the cool,
refreshing river water with The Lie. -
5:31 - 5:34Now, Truth was always
a little bit cautious -
5:34 - 5:37whenever she was
in the presence of The Lie, -
5:37 - 5:39but, on this particular day,
-
5:39 - 5:42the Sun was out in all its glory.
-
5:42 - 5:43So, she went.
-
5:43 - 5:49Now, while Truth was down bathing
in the cool, refreshing river water, -
5:49 - 5:52she didn't realize that The Lie
-
5:52 - 5:55had stolen away with all her clothes.
-
5:55 - 5:57So, while Truth was
in the middle of the river -
5:57 - 6:00trying to figure out what to do,
-
6:00 - 6:04The Lie was parading
around the marketplace, -
6:04 - 6:07dressed up like The Truth.
-
6:07 - 6:11Now finally, when Truth
got up enough courage -
6:11 - 6:16to run down to the marketplace
wearing nothing but the truth... -
6:16 - 6:18(Laughter)
-
6:18 - 6:22...no matter how hard she tried
to tell all the people -
6:22 - 6:27that she was The Truth and he was The Lie,
-
6:27 - 6:30the people were so embarrassed
-
6:30 - 6:34to look upon the naked Truth
-
6:34 - 6:40that they believed The Lie dressed up
in Truth's clothes instead. -
6:40 - 6:45And it is still the same to this day.
-
6:45 - 6:48The truth may be difficult to look upon,
-
6:48 - 6:53but it remains the truth, nonetheless.
Yeah? -
6:53 - 6:56So, if you really care about
this common unity -
6:56 - 6:58that we have going on today,
-
6:58 - 7:00you've got to do the work
-
7:00 - 7:04and "concile",
-
7:04 - 7:09so that you can some day
reconcile, all right? -
7:09 - 7:11So, I'm just going to take my issues
-
7:11 - 7:14and go on, off the stage. (Laughter)
-
7:14 - 7:15Thank you.
-
7:15 - 7:16(Applause)
