Why is everyone against me?

  • 0:09 - 0:25
    (Bell)
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    (FRENCH)
    Why do I sometimes feel
    everyone is against me?
  • 0:35 - 0:41
    (ENGLISH)
Why do I sometimes have the feeling
    that everyone is against me?
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    That is only a feeling.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    (Translate for her.)
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    That is only a feeling.
  • 0:56 - 1:02
    (FRENCH)
    That is only...a feeling.
  • 1:05 - 1:11
    (FRENCH)
(Sister Tong Nghiem will translate for you.)
  • 1:15 - 1:24
That feeling may be born from
    a wrong perception.
  • 1:26 - 1:31
We imagine that people don't like us,
    are against us.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
But the fact may be the opposite.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
The fact may be that everyone likes you
  • 1:41 - 1:47
and sees you as a beautiful flower
    in the garden of humanity.
  • 1:52 - 2:00
So if we are her friends,
we should say it out loud:
  • 2:01 - 2:06
"I like you, I love you,
    you are a beautiful flower."
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    But...
  • 2:18 - 2:20
Something can be done about this,
  • 2:20 - 2:28
while waiting for the people to say
they do not dislike you, they like you.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
You have to learn to like yourself.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
You have to learn how to love yourself.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    This is very important,
    to accept yourself.
  • 2:42 - 2:46
    In order to accept yourself,
    you have to practice.
  • 2:48 - 2:54
And this does not only count for young
    but also for old people.
  • 2:56 - 2:59
Sometimes we do not like ourselves.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
We think we are not good enough.
  • 3:05 - 3:09
    But in fact there are
    many good things in us,
  • 3:11 - 3:16
that have been transmitted to us
    by our parents and ancestors.
  • 3:18 - 3:20
We may not have seen them.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
That is why we may have an
    inferiority complex.
  • 3:29 - 3:34
    Among our ancestors there are
    people who are very talented,
  • 3:35 - 3:42
    who have great virtues like
    beauty, understanding, compassion.
  • 3:43 - 3:52
They have transmitted to us the seeds of
    beauty, understanding, love, forgiveness.
  • 3:53 - 3:57
And we have them, but we don't know
    that we have them.
  • 3:57 - 4:07
So when you breathe in and out mindfully,
you might recognize these seeds in you,
  • 4:07 - 4:17
because you know you are capable
of understanding, forgiving and being happy.
  • 4:18 - 4:22
    And if you recognize
    these good things in you,
  • 4:22 - 4:25
you don't have the complex anymore.
  • 4:26 - 4:30
    And you can accept yourself
    and you can love yourself.
  • 4:34 - 4:40
The teaching of the Buddha says that
    everyone has the capacity
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    to love and to understand,
  • 4:44 - 4:50
that everyone has the Buddha Nature
    in himself or herself.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    The Buddha Nature is
    something very beautiful.
  • 4:56 - 4:59
And you have it in yourself.
  • 5:00 - 5:05
So if you believe and see that,
    you will accept yourself easily.
  • 5:05 - 5:10
And you know that you can
    help people to suffer less.
  • 5:10 - 5:20
    When another person is unhappy,
you can very well do or say something
  • 5:20 - 5:23
to make him or suffer less.
  • 5:24 - 5:31
    You have that capacity.
And you have done that in the past.
  • 5:32 - 5:36
    You have helped one person,
    one child to suffer less.
  • 5:37 - 5:43
When you see someone get hurt
you can help that person to feel better.
  • 5:44 - 5:47
And that is the Buddha Nature in you.
  • 5:49 - 5:52
And if you see the Buddha Nature in you,
  • 5:52 - 5:57
if you can see the beauty,
the stability, the freshness in you,
  • 5:57 - 6:02
    then you can accept yourself,
    you can love yourself.
  • 6:04 - 6:08
It is very important to accept oneself,
    to love oneself.
  • 6:08 - 6:13
If you don't accept and love yourself,
how can you expect others to do so?
  • 6:14 - 6:19
That is why to accept oneself
    is very important.
  • 6:19 - 6:24
    And Thay has practised
and Thay has been able to accept himself.
  • 6:26 - 6:31
So he has a lof of peace and joy
    because he was able
  • 6:31 - 6:35
to accept himself and like himself.
  • 6:37 - 6:42
    That is a good question.
That has helped many of us.
  • 6:42 - 6:45
Thank you for asking the question.
  • 7:00 - 7:15
    (Bell)
