The courage to tell a hidden story
-
0:01 - 0:04When I turned 19, I started my career
-
0:04 - 0:06as the first female photojournalist
-
0:06 - 0:09in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.
-
0:09 - 0:11My work as a woman photographer
-
0:11 - 0:13was considered a serious insult
-
0:13 - 0:15to local traditions,
-
0:15 - 0:17and created a lasting stigma
-
0:17 - 0:20for me and my family.
-
0:20 - 0:23The male-dominated field made my presence
-
0:23 - 0:26unwelcome by all possible means.
-
0:26 - 0:28They made clear that a woman
-
0:28 - 0:30must not do a man's job.
-
0:30 - 0:33Photo agencies in Gaza refused to train me
-
0:33 - 0:35because of my gender.
-
0:35 - 0:38The "No" sign was pretty clear.
-
0:38 - 0:39Three of my colleagues
-
0:39 - 0:44went as far as to drive me to an open air strike area
-
0:44 - 0:46where the explosion sounds
-
0:46 - 0:48were the only thing I could hear.
-
0:48 - 0:51Dust was flying in the air,
-
0:51 - 0:55and the ground was shaking like a swing beneath me.
-
0:55 - 0:58I only realized we weren't
there to document the event -
0:58 - 1:01when the three of them got back into the armored Jeep
-
1:01 - 1:04and drove away, waving and laughing,
-
1:04 - 1:08leaving me behind in the open air strike zone.
-
1:08 - 1:11For a moment, I felt terrified,
-
1:11 - 1:16humiliated, and sorry for myself.
-
1:16 - 1:18My colleagues' action was not
-
1:18 - 1:20the only death threat I have received,
-
1:20 - 1:24but it was the most dangerous one.
-
1:24 - 1:27The perception of women's life in Gaza
-
1:27 - 1:29is passive.
-
1:29 - 1:33Until a recent time, a lot of
women were not allowed -
1:33 - 1:36to work or pursue education.
-
1:36 - 1:39At times of such doubled war including
-
1:39 - 1:41both social restrictions on women
-
1:41 - 1:44and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,
-
1:44 - 1:48women's dark and bright stories were fading away.
-
1:48 - 1:50To men, women's stories were seen
-
1:50 - 1:52as inconsequential.
-
1:52 - 1:55I started paying closer attention
-
1:55 - 1:57to women's lives in Gaza.
-
1:57 - 2:00Because of my gender, I had access
-
2:00 - 2:05to worlds where my colleagues were forbidden.
-
2:05 - 2:07Beyond the obvious pain and struggle,
-
2:07 - 2:09there was a healthy dose
-
2:09 - 2:12of laughter and accomplishments.
-
2:12 - 2:15In front of a police compound in Gaza City
-
2:15 - 2:18during the first war in Gaza,
-
2:18 - 2:22an Israeli air raid managed to destroy the compound
-
2:22 - 2:24and break my nose.
-
2:24 - 2:28For a moment, all I saw was white, bright white,
-
2:28 - 2:31like these lights.
-
2:31 - 2:34I thought to myself I either got blind
-
2:34 - 2:37or I was in heaven.
-
2:37 - 2:40By the time I managed to open my eyes,
-
2:40 - 2:45I had documented this moment.
-
2:45 - 2:47Mohammed Khader, a Palestinian worker
-
2:47 - 2:50who spent two decades in Israel,
-
2:50 - 2:52as his retirement plan,
-
2:52 - 2:55he decided to build a four-floor house,
-
2:55 - 3:00only by the first field operation at his neighborhood,
-
3:00 - 3:03the house was flattened to the ground.
-
3:03 - 3:07Nothing was left but the pigeons he raised
-
3:07 - 3:10and a jacuzzi, a bathtub
-
3:10 - 3:12that he got from Tel Aviv.
-
3:12 - 3:14Mohammed got the bathtub
-
3:14 - 3:16on the top of the rubble
-
3:16 - 3:18and started giving his kids
-
3:18 - 3:22an every morning bubble bath.
-
3:22 - 3:25My work is not meant to hide the scars of war,
-
3:25 - 3:28but to show the full frame
-
3:28 - 3:31of unseen stories of Gazans.
-
3:31 - 3:34As a Palestinian female photographer,
-
3:34 - 3:39the journey of struggle, survival and everyday life
-
3:39 - 3:42has inspired me to overcome the community taboo
-
3:42 - 3:47and see a different side of war and its aftermath.
-
3:47 - 3:51I became a witness with a choice:
-
3:51 - 3:55to run away or stand still.
-
3:55 - 3:57Thank you.
-
3:57 - 3:59(Applause)
