3 ways to plan for the (very) long term

    So I've been "futuring,"
    which is a term I made up --

    about three seconds ago.

    I've been futuring for about 20 years,
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    and when I first started,
    I would sit down with people,
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    and say, "Hey,
    let's talk 10, 20 years out."
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    And they'd say, "Great."
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    And I've been seeing that time horizon
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    get shorter and shorter
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    and shorter,
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    so much so that I met
    with a CEO two months ago
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    and I said -- we started
    our initial conversation.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    He goes, "I love what you do.
    I want to talk about the next six months."
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    (Laughter)
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    We have a lot of problems
    that we are facing.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    These are civilizational-scale problems.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    The issue though is,
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    we can't solve them
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    using the mental models
    that we use right now
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    to try and solve these problems.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    Yes, a lot of great
    technical work is being done,
  • 0:54 - 1:00
    but there is a problem that
    we need to solve for a priori, before,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    if we want to really
    move the needle on those big problems.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    "Short-termism."
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    Right? There's no marches.
    There's no bracelets.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
    There's no petitions that you can sign
    to be against short-termism.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    I tried to put one up, and no one signed.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    It was weird.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    (Laughter)
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    But it prevents us from doing so much.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    Short-termism, for many reasons,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    has pervaded every
    nook and cranny of our reality.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    I just want you to take a second
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    and just think about an issue
    that you're thinking, working on.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    It could be personal, it could be at work
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    or it could be
    move-the-needle world stuff,
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    and think about
    how far out you tend to think
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    about the solution set for that.
  • 1:42 - 1:46
    Because short-termism prevents the CEO
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    from buying really
    expensive safety equipment.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    It'll hurt the bottom line.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    So we get the Deepwater Horizon.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    Short-termism prevents teachers
  • 1:57 - 2:01
    from spending quality
    one-on-one time with their students.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    So right now in America,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    a high school student
    drops out every 26 seconds.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    Short-termism prevents Congress --
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    sorry if there's anyone
    in here from Congress --
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    (Laughter)
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    or not really that sorry --
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    (Laughter)
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    from putting money
    into a real infrastructure bill.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    So what we get
    is the I-35W bridge collapse
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    over the Mississippi a few years ago,
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    13 killed.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    It wasn't always like this.
    We did the Panama Canal.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    We pretty much
    have eradicated global polio.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    We did the transcontinental railroad,
    the Marshall Plan.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    And it's not just big, physical
    infrastructure problems and issues.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    Women's suffrage, the right to vote.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    But in our short-termist time,
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    where everything seems to happen right now
  • 2:50 - 2:55
    and we can only think out
    past the next tweet or timeline post,
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    we get hyper-reactionary.
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    So what do we do?
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    We take people who are fleeing
    their war-torn country,
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    and we go after them.
  • 3:03 - 3:07
    We take low-level drug offenders,
    and we put them away for life.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    And then we build McMansions
    without even thinking
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    about how people are going
    to get between them and their job.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    It's a quick buck.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    Now, the reality is,
    for a lot of these problems,
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    there are some technical fixes,
  • 3:20 - 3:21
    a lot of them.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    I call these technical fixes
    sandbag strategies.
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    So you know there's a storm coming,
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    the levee is broken,
    no one's put any money into it,
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    you surround your home with sandbags.
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    And guess what? It works.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    Storm goes away,
    the water level goes down,
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    you get rid of the sandbags,
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    and you do this storm
    after storm after storm.
  • 3:42 - 3:43
    And here's the insidious thing.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    A sandbag strategy
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    can get you reelected.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    A sandbag strategy
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    can help you make your quarterly numbers.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    Now, if we want to move forward
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    into a different future
    than the one we have right now,
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    because I don't think we've hit --
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    2016 is not peak civilization.
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    (Laughter)
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    There's some more we can do.
  • 4:07 - 4:12
    But my argument is that unless we shift
    our mental models and our mental maps
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    on how we think about the short,
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    it's not going to happen.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    So what I've developed
    is something called "longpath,"
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    and it's a practice.
  • 4:21 - 4:25
    And longpath isn't
    a kind of one-and-done exercise.
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    I'm sure everyone here
    at some point has done an off-site
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    with a lot of Post-It notes
    and whiteboards,
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    and you do --
  • 4:32 - 4:35
    no offense to the consultants
    in here who do that --
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    and you do a long-term plan,
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    and then two weeks later,
    everyone forgets about it.
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    Right? Or a week later.
    If you're lucky, three months.
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    It's a practice because
    it's not necessarily a thing that you do.
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    It's a process where you have
    to revisit different ways of thinking
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    for every major decision
    that you're working on.
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    So I want to go through
    those three ways of thinking.
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    So the first: transgenerational thinking.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    I love the philosophers:
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    Plato, Socrates, Habermas, Heidegger.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    I was raised on them.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    But they all did one thing
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    that didn't actually seem like a big deal
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    until I really started
    kind of looking into this.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    And they all took,
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    as a unit of measure
    for their entire reality
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    of what it meant to be virtuous and good,
  • 5:22 - 5:23
    the single lifespan,
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    from birth to death.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    But here's a problem with these issues:
  • 5:28 - 5:29
    they stack up on top of us,
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    because the only way we know
    how to do something good in the world
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    is if we do it between
    our birth and our death.
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    That's what we're programmed to do.
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    If you go to the self-help section
    in any bookstore,
  • 5:39 - 5:40
    it's all about you.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    Which is great,
  • 5:43 - 5:46
    unless you're dealing
    with some of these major issues.
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    And so with transgenerational thinking,
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    which is really kind of
    transgenerational ethics,
  • 5:54 - 5:58
    you're able to expand
    how you think about these problems,
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    what is your role
    in helping to solve them.
  • 6:02 - 6:06
    Now, this isn't something that just has to
    be done at the Security Council chamber.
  • 6:06 - 6:10
    It's something that you can do
    in a very kind of personal way.
  • 6:10 - 6:14
    So every once in a while, if I'm lucky,
    my wife and I like to go out to dinner,
  • 6:14 - 6:17
    and we have three children
    under the age of seven.
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    So you can imagine
    it's a very peaceful, quiet meal.
  • 6:20 - 6:21
    (Laughter)
  • 6:21 - 6:27
    So we sit down and literally
    all I want to do is just eat and chill,
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    and my kids have a completely
    and totally different idea
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    of what we're going to be doing.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    And so my first idea
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    is my sandbag strategy, right?
  • 6:35 - 6:38
    It's to go into my pocket
    and take out the iPhone
  • 6:38 - 6:39
    and give them "Frozen"
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    or some other bestselling game thing.
  • 6:43 - 6:47
    And then I stop
  • 6:47 - 6:52
    and I have to kind of put on
    this transgenerational thinking cap.
  • 6:52 - 6:55
    I don't do this in the restaurant,
    because it would be bizarre,
  • 6:55 - 6:56
    but I have to --
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    I did it once, and that's how
    I learned it was bizarre.
  • 6:59 - 7:00
    (Laughter)
  • 7:00 - 7:04
    And you have to kind of think,
    "OK, I can do this."
  • 7:04 - 7:06
    But what is this teaching them?
  • 7:07 - 7:10
    So what does it mean
    if I actually bring some paper
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    or engage with them in conversation?
  • 7:12 - 7:15
    It's hard. It's not easy,
    and I'm making this very personal.
  • 7:15 - 7:16
    It's actually more traumatic
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    than some of the big issues
    that I work on in the world --
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    entertaining my kids at dinner.
  • 7:22 - 7:25
    But what it does is it connects them
    here in the present with me,
  • 7:25 - 7:26
    but it also --
  • 7:26 - 7:29
    and this is the crux
    of transgenerational thinking ethics --
  • 7:29 - 7:33
    it sets them up to how they're
    going to interact with their kids
  • 7:33 - 7:35
    and their kids and their kids.
  • 7:36 - 7:38
    Second, futures thinking.
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    When we think about the future,
  • 7:41 - 7:42
    10, 15 years out,
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    give me a vision of what the future is.
  • 7:46 - 7:49
    You don't have to give it to me,
    but think in your head.
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    And what you're probably going to see
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    is the dominant cultural lens
  • 7:53 - 7:56
    that dominates our thinking
    about the future right now:
  • 7:56 - 7:57
    technology.
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    So when we think about the problems,
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    we always put it through
    a technological lens,
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    a tech-centric, a techno-utopia,
    and there's nothing wrong with that,
  • 8:05 - 8:08
    but it's something that we have to
    really think deeply about
  • 8:08 - 8:11
    if we're going to move
    on these major issues,
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    because it wasn't always like this. Right?
  • 8:13 - 8:16
    The ancients had their way of thinking
  • 8:17 - 8:18
    about what the future was.
  • 8:20 - 8:25
    The Church definitely had their idea
    of what the future could be,
  • 8:25 - 8:27
    and you could actually pay your way
    into that future. Right?
  • 8:28 - 8:29
    And luckily for humanity,
  • 8:29 - 8:32
    we got the scientific revolution.
  • 8:32 - 8:33
    From there, we got the technology,
  • 8:33 - 8:35
    but what has happened --
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    And by the way, this is not a critique.
  • 8:38 - 8:41
    I love technology.
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    Everything in my house talks back to me,
  • 8:43 - 8:45
    from my children
    to my speakers to everything.
  • 8:45 - 8:48
    (Laughter)
  • 8:48 - 8:53
    But we've abdicated the future
    from the high priests in Rome
  • 8:53 - 8:57
    to the high priests of Silicon Valley.
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    So when we think, well,
    how are we going to deal with climate
  • 9:01 - 9:03
    or with poverty or homelessness,
  • 9:03 - 9:06
    our first reaction is to think about it
    through a technology lens.
  • 9:07 - 9:12
    And look, I'm not advocating
    that we go to this guy.
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    I love Joel, don't get me wrong,
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    but I'm not saying we go to Joel.
  • 9:16 - 9:18
    What I'm saying is we need to rethink
  • 9:18 - 9:23
    our base assumption about
    only looking at the future in one way,
  • 9:23 - 9:25
    only looking at it
    through the dominant lens,
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    because our problems
    are so big and so vast
  • 9:27 - 9:30
    that we need to open ourselves up.
  • 9:30 - 9:34
    So that's why I do everything in my power
    not to talk about the future.
  • 9:34 - 9:36
    I talk about futures.
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    It opens the conversation again.
  • 9:39 - 9:41
    So when you're sitting and thinking
  • 9:41 - 9:44
    about how do we move forward
    on this major issue --
  • 9:44 - 9:46
    it could be at home,
  • 9:46 - 9:48
    it could be at work,
  • 9:48 - 9:51
    it could be again on the global stage --
  • 9:51 - 9:55
    don't cut yourself off from thinking
    about something beyond technology as a fix
  • 9:55 - 9:59
    because we're more concerned
    about technological evolution right now
  • 9:59 - 10:01
    than we are about moral evolution.
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    And unless we fix for that,
  • 10:03 - 10:06
    we're not going to be able
    to get out of short-termism
  • 10:06 - 10:07
    and get to where we want to be.
  • 10:07 - 10:10
    The final, telos thinking.
    This comes from the Greek root.
  • 10:11 - 10:13
    Ultimate aim and ultimate purpose.
  • 10:13 - 10:15
    And it's really asking one question:
  • 10:16 - 10:17
    to what end?
  • 10:18 - 10:21
    When was the last time
    you asked yourself: to what end?
  • 10:21 - 10:25
    And when you asked yourself that,
    how far out did you go?
  • 10:26 - 10:29
    Because long isn't long enough anymore.
  • 10:30 - 10:31
    Three, five years doesn't cut it.
  • 10:31 - 10:34
    It's 30, 40, 50, a hundred years.
  • 10:35 - 10:37
    In Homer's epic, "The Odyssey,"
  • 10:37 - 10:40
    Odysseus had the answer to his "what end."
  • 10:40 - 10:42
    It was Ithaca.
  • 10:42 - 10:44
    It was this bold vision
    of what he wanted --
  • 10:44 - 10:45
    to return to Penelope.
  • 10:45 - 10:48
    And I can tell you,
    because of the work that I'm doing,
  • 10:48 - 10:51
    but also you know it intuitively --
    we have lost our Ithaca.
  • 10:51 - 10:54
    We have lost our "to what end,"
    so we stay on this hamster wheel.
  • 10:54 - 10:57
    And yes, we're trying
    to solve these problems,
  • 10:57 - 11:00
    but what comes after we solve the problem?
  • 11:00 - 11:03
    And unless you define what comes after,
    people aren't going to move.
  • 11:04 - 11:07
    The businesses --
    this isn't just about business --
  • 11:07 - 11:10
    but the businesses that do consistently
    who break out of short-termism
  • 11:10 - 11:12
    not surprisingly
    are family-run businesses.
  • 11:12 - 11:16
    They're transgenerational. They're telos.
    They think about the futures.
  • 11:16 - 11:20
    And this is an ad for Patek Philippe.
    They're 175 years old,
  • 11:20 - 11:23
    and what's amazing
    is that they literally embody
  • 11:23 - 11:25
    this kind of longpathian sense
    in their brand,
  • 11:25 - 11:28
    because, by the way,
    you never actually own a Patek Philippe,
  • 11:28 - 11:30
    and I definitely won't --
  • 11:30 - 11:31
    (Laughter)
  • 11:31 - 11:34
    unless somebody wants to just
    throw 25,000 dollars on the stage.
  • 11:34 - 11:37
    You merely look after it
    for the next generation.
  • 11:39 - 11:41
    So it's important that we remember,
  • 11:41 - 11:44
    the future, we treat it like a noun.
  • 11:44 - 11:47
    It's not. It's a verb.
  • 11:47 - 11:48
    It requires action.
  • 11:48 - 11:50
    It requires us to push into it.
  • 11:50 - 11:52
    It's not this thing that washes over us.
  • 11:52 - 11:54
    It's something that we
    actually have total control over,
  • 11:55 - 11:57
    but in a short-term society,
    we end up feeling like we don't.
  • 11:57 - 11:59
    We feel like we're trapped.
  • 11:59 - 12:00
    We can push through that.
  • 12:02 - 12:04
    Now I'm getting more comfortable
  • 12:05 - 12:07
    in the fact that at some point
  • 12:08 - 12:10
    in the inevitable future,
  • 12:11 - 12:12
    I will die,
  • 12:13 - 12:17
    but because of these new ways
    of thinking and doing,
  • 12:17 - 12:21
    both in the outside world
    and also with my family at home,
  • 12:21 - 12:24
    and what I'm leaving my kids,
    I get more comfortable in that fact.
  • 12:24 - 12:28
    And it's something that a lot of us
    are really uncomfortable with,
  • 12:28 - 12:29
    but I'm telling you,
  • 12:30 - 12:31
    think it through.
  • 12:31 - 12:34
    Apply this type of thinking
    and you can push yourself past
  • 12:34 - 12:36
    what's inevitably
    very, very uncomfortable.
  • 12:36 - 12:40
    And it all begins really
    with yourself asking this question:
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    what is your longpath?
  • 12:44 - 12:47
    But I ask you, when you ask yourself that
  • 12:47 - 12:49
    now or tonight or behind a steering wheel
  • 12:49 - 12:52
    or in the boardroom or the situation room:
  • 12:54 - 12:56
    push past the longpath,
  • 12:57 - 13:00
    quick, oh, what's my longpath
    the next three years or five years?
  • 13:00 - 13:03
    Try and push past your own life if you can
  • 13:03 - 13:06
    because it makes you do things
    a little bit bigger
  • 13:06 - 13:08
    than you thought were possible.
  • 13:09 - 13:12
    Yes, we have huge,
    huge problems out there.
  • 13:14 - 13:16
    With this process, with this thinking,
  • 13:17 - 13:19
    I think we can make a difference.
  • 13:19 - 13:22
    I think you can make a difference
  • 13:22 - 13:23
    and I believe in you guys.
