A smog vacuum cleaner and other magical city designs

  • Not Synced
    Do you remember these
    glow-in-the-dark little stars
  • Not Synced
which you had on the ceiling
when you were a boy or a girl?
  • Not Synced
    Yes?
  • Not Synced
    It is light.
  • Not Synced
    It is pure light.
  • Not Synced
    I think I've been staring
    at them way too long
  • Not Synced
    when I was a five-year-old,
  • Not Synced
    you know?
  • Not Synced
    It's so beautiful.
  • Not Synced
    No energy bill,
  • Not Synced
    no maintenance;
  • Not Synced
    it is there.
  • Not Synced
    So two years ago,
  • Not Synced
we went back to the lab,
  • Not Synced
    making it more durable,
  • Not Synced
    more light emitting,
  • Not Synced
    with the experts.
  • Not Synced
    And at the same time,
  • Not Synced
we got a request from this guy --
  • Not Synced
    Van Gogh.
  • Not Synced
    The famous Van Gogh Foundation,
  • Not Synced
    who wanted to celebrate
his 125th anniversary in the Netherlands.
  • Not Synced
And they came to me and asked,
  • Not Synced
    "Can you make a place
  • Not Synced
where he feels more alive again
    in the Netherlands?"
  • Not Synced
And I liked that question a lot,
  • Not Synced
    so in way,
  • Not Synced
we sort of started to connect
    these two different worlds.
  • Not Synced
This is how my brain works,
  • Not Synced
    by the way.
  • Not Synced
Oh, I would love to keep on
    doing this for an hour.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And this is the result that we made:
  • Not Synced
    a bicycle path which charges
    at daytime via the sun,
  • Not Synced
    and glows at night,
  • Not Synced
    up to eight hours.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    Hinting towards a future
    which should be energy friendly,
  • Not Synced
and linking up the local grounds
  • Not Synced
    as Van Gogh literally walked
    and lived there in 1883.
  • Not Synced
And you can go there every night for free,
  • Not Synced
    no ticket needed.
  • Not Synced
    People experience the beauty
of cycling through the starry night,
  • Not Synced
thinking about green energy, safety --
  • Not Synced
    I want to create places
    where people feel connected again.
  • Not Synced
And it was somehow great to make
    these projects happen
  • Not Synced
    with the industry,
  • Not Synced
    with the infrastructure companies,
  • Not Synced
    you know?
  • Not Synced
So when the [.... ....] start to call --
  • Not Synced
    how much for 10 kilometers?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Yeah, really,
  • Not Synced
that's a weird call you're going to get,
  • Not Synced
    but it's fascinating
  • Not Synced
that this is not just some sort of one-off,
    nice-to-have special,
  • Not Synced
I think this kind of creative thinking,
  • Not Synced
    these kinds of connections,
  • Not Synced
    if the new economy --
  • Not Synced
    World Economic Forum,
  • Not Synced
    the think tank in Geneva,
  • Not Synced
made an interview with a lot
of smart people all around the world,
  • Not Synced
asking what are the top 10 skills
you and I need to become successful.
  • Not Synced
    And what is interesting
[about] what you see here --
  • Not Synced
    it's not about money,
  • Not Synced
or being really good in C++,
  • Not Synced
although these are great skills to have,
  • Not Synced
    I have to admit.
  • Not Synced
    But look at number three:
  • Not Synced
    creativity.
  • Not Synced
    Number two:
  • Not Synced
    critical thinking.
  • Not Synced
    Number one:
  • Not Synced
    problem-solving --
  • Not Synced
    complex problem-solving.
  • Not Synced
    All the things that robots
or a computer is really bad at.
  • Not Synced
And this makes me very optimistic,
  • Not Synced
very hopeful for the new world,
  • Not Synced
    that as we will live
    in this hyper-technological world,
  • Not Synced
    are human skills --
  • Not Synced
    our desire for empathy,
  • Not Synced
    our desire for curiosity,
  • Not Synced
    our desire for beauty --
  • Not Synced
    will be more appreciated again,
  • Not Synced
and we will live in a world
where creativity is our true capital.
  • Not Synced
And a process like that --
  • Not Synced
    a creative process like that,
  • Not Synced
I don't know how it works for you,
  • Not Synced
but in my brain it always
    starts with a question:
  • Not Synced
    why?
  • Not Synced
Why does a jellyfish emit light?
  • Not Synced
    Or a firefly?
  • Not Synced
Or why do be accept pollution?
  • Not Synced
    This is from my room
    in Beijing three years ago.
  • Not Synced
Left image is a good day --
  • Not Synced
    Saturday.
  • Not Synced
I can see the cars, the people, the birds,
  • Not Synced
life is OK in a dense urban city.
  • Not Synced
And on the right image --
  • Not Synced
    holy moly.
  • Not Synced
    Pollution.
  • Not Synced
    Complete layers.
  • Not Synced
    I couldn't even see
the other side of the city.
  • Not Synced
And this image made me really sad.
  • Not Synced
This is not the bright future
    we envision here at TED,
  • Not Synced
    this is the horror.
  • Not Synced
We live five to six years shorter,
  • Not Synced
    children have lung cancer
    when they're six years old.
  • Not Synced
And so in a weird, beautiful way,
  • Not Synced
    I at that moment became
    inspired by [raging] smog.
  • Not Synced
And the governments all around the world
are fighting their war on smog,
  • Not Synced
but I wanted to make something
    within the now,
  • Not Synced
and so we decided to build
    the largest smog vacuum cleaner
  • Not Synced
    in the world.
  • Not Synced
So it sucks up polluted air,
  • Not Synced
    cleans it,
  • Not Synced
    and then releases it.
  • Not Synced
And we built the first one.
  • Not Synced
    So it sucks up 30,000
    cubic meters per hour,
  • Not Synced
cleans it on the nano level,
  • Not Synced
    2.5 [... ...] particles,
  • Not Synced
    using very litle electricity,
  • Not Synced
and then releasing the clean air
  • Not Synced
    so we have parks,
  • Not Synced
playgrounds which 55 to 75 percent
more clean than the rest of the city.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Yes!
  • Not Synced
    And every month of so,
  • Not Synced
it opens like a spaceship --
  • Not Synced
like a Marilyn Monroe with the --
  • Not Synced
    well, you know what,
  • Not Synced
    anyway.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    So this ...
  • Not Synced
this is the stuff we are capturing.
  • Not Synced
    This is Beijing smog.
  • Not Synced
This is in our lungs right now.
  • Not Synced
If you live next to a highway,
  • Not Synced
it's the same at 17 cigarettes per day.
  • Not Synced
    Are we insane?
  • Not Synced
When did we say yes to that?
  • Not Synced
    And we had buckets
    of this disgusting material
  • Not Synced
    in our studio,
  • Not Synced
    and on a Monday morning
    we were discussing.
  • Not Synced
    We were like, "Shit,
what should we do with it?
  • Not Synced
    Should we throw it away?"
  • Not Synced
    Like, like, help!
  • Not Synced
    And then we realized --
  • Not Synced
    no, no, no, no, no,
  • Not Synced
    waste should not exist.
  • Not Synced
    Waste for one should be
    food for the other.
  • Not Synced
So here, maybe show it around.
  • Not Synced
Do not put this in your coffee.
  • Not Synced
And we realized that 42 percent
    is made out of carbon,
  • Not Synced
    and carbon of course,
  • Not Synced
    under high pressure,
  • Not Synced
    you get ...
  • Not Synced
    diamonds,
  • Not Synced
    yes.
  • Not Synced
    So inspired by that,
  • Not Synced
we compress it for 30 minutes --
  • Not Synced
    (Compression sound)
  • Not Synced
    and making smog-free rings.
  • Not Synced
And so by sharing a ring,
  • Not Synced
you donate 1,000 cubic meters of clean air
  • Not Synced
to the city where the tower is in.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    I have one here --
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    A little floating cube.
  • Not Synced
I will give one to you.
  • Not Synced
    I'm not going to propose,
  • Not Synced
    don't worry.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Are we good?
  • Not Synced
    Yeah, we're good.
  • Not Synced
    You can show it around.
  • Not Synced
And we put this online --
  • Not Synced
    Kickstarter campaign,
  • Not Synced
    crowdfunding.
  • Not Synced
And people started to preorder it,
  • Not Synced
    but more importantly,
  • Not Synced
    they started to prepay it.
  • Not Synced
    So the finance we made
    with the jewellery
  • Not Synced
    helped us to realize,
  • Not Synced
    to build the first tower.
  • Not Synced
    And that's powerful --
  • Not Synced
    so the ways [....],
  • Not Synced
    was the enabler.
  • Not Synced
Also the feedback from community --
  • Not Synced
this is a wedding couple from India,
  • Not Synced
    when he proposed to her
    with the smog-free ring
  • Not Synced
as a sign of true beauty,
  • Not Synced
    as a sign of hope.
  • Not Synced
    And she said yes.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
I love this image so much
for a lot of different reasons.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And right now the project
    is touring through China.
  • Not Synced
    Actually, we have the support
    of China's [central] government.
  • Not Synced
So the first goal is to create
    local, clean-air parks,
  • Not Synced
and that works already quite well --
  • Not Synced
    55, 75 percent more clean.
  • Not Synced
    And at the same time,
  • Not Synced
we team up with the NGO's,
  • Not Synced
    with the governors,
  • Not Synced
    with the students,
  • Not Synced
    with the tech people,
  • Not Synced
to say, "Hey, what do we need to do
  • Not Synced
to make a whole city smog-free?"
  • Not Synced
It's about the dream of clean air.
  • Not Synced
    We do workshops;
  • Not Synced
    new ideas pop up.
  • Not Synced
    These are smog-free bicycles,
  • Not Synced
    which --
  • Not Synced
    I'm Dutch, yes?
  • Not Synced
    I have this bicycle DNA
    inside of me somewhere.
  • Not Synced
And so it sucks up polluted air,
  • Not Synced
it cleans it and releases it
  • Not Synced
in the fight against the car,
  • Not Synced
in the celebration of the bicycle.
  • Not Synced
And so right now we're working
on a sort of "package deal" so to speak,
  • Not Synced
    where we say,
  • Not Synced
    "smog-free towers, smof-free rings,"
  • Not Synced
    we go to the mayors
or the governors of this world,
  • Not Synced
    and say, "we can guarantee
    a short-term reduction of pollution
  • Not Synced
    between 20 to 40 percent,
  • Not Synced
    please sign here right now."
  • Not Synced
    Yes?
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    So it's all about connecting
    new technology with creative thinking.
  • Not Synced
And if you start thinking about that,
  • Not Synced
there is so much you can imagine,
  • Not Synced
so much more you can do.
  • Not Synced
    We worked on dance floors
  • Not Synced
    which produce electricity
    when you dance on it.
  • Not Synced
We did a design for that --
  • Not Synced
    2008.
  • Not Synced
So it moves eight or nine millimeters,
  • Not Synced
    produces 25 watts.
  • Not Synced
    The electricity that we generated,
  • Not Synced
it is used for the lighting
    or the DJ booth.
  • Not Synced
    So some of the sustainability
    is about doing more,
  • Not Synced
    not about doing less,
  • Not Synced
but also on a larger scale,
  • Not Synced
    the Netherlands --
  • Not Synced
    where I'm from --
  • Not Synced
    we live below sea level.
  • Not Synced
    So because of these beauties,
  • Not Synced
    the [off... .... ],
  • Not Synced
    32 kilometer,
  • Not Synced
    built by hand in 1932,
  • Not Synced
    we live with the water,
  • Not Synced
    we fight with the water,
  • Not Synced
    we try to find harmony,
  • Not Synced
    but sometimes we forget.
  • Not Synced
And therefore we made [... ....],
  • Not Synced
a combination of leads and lenses,
  • Not Synced
which show how high the water would be,
  • Not Synced
    global change,
  • Not Synced
    if we stop.
  • Not Synced
If today we all go home and say,
  • Not Synced
    "Oh, whatever, someone else
    will do it for us,"
  • Not Synced
or we wait or government or whatever,
  • Not Synced
    you know,
  • Not Synced
we're not going to do that.
  • Not Synced
    It goes wrong.
  • Not Synced
And we place this in public spaces
    all around the world.
  • Not Synced
    Thousands of people showed up.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
You're too nice, you're too nice.
  • Not Synced
    That's not good for [design].
  • Not Synced
So thousands of people showed up,
  • Not Synced
    and some actually were scared.
  • Not Synced
    They left,
  • Not Synced
they experienced the flood in 1953.
  • Not Synced
    And others were mesmorized.
  • Not Synced
    Can we make floating cities?
  • Not Synced
    Can we generate electricity
    from the change in tide?
  • Not Synced
So I find it so important
    to make experiences --
  • Not Synced
    collective experiences where people
    feel connected with vision,
  • Not Synced
    with the future,
  • Not Synced
    and triggering what is possible.
  • Not Synced
    At the same time,
  • Not Synced
you know these kinds of things,
  • Not Synced
    they're not easy, yes?
  • Not Synced
    It's a struggle.
  • Not Synced
And what I experienced in my life
  • Not Synced
is that a lot of people say
    they want innovation,
  • Not Synced
    and they want the next
    and the new, the future,
  • Not Synced
but the moment you present a new idea,
  • Not Synced
there's this weird tendency to reply
to every new idea with two words,
  • Not Synced
    which is ...
  • Not Synced
    No, not "how much?"
  • Not Synced
    It's more annoying.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    What is it, guys?
  • Not Synced
Or you're really blessed people --
  • Not Synced
    that's really good.
  • Not Synced
    "Yes, but,"
  • Not Synced
    very good.
  • Not Synced
    "Yes, but it's too expensive,
    it's too cheap,
  • Not Synced
it's too fast, it's too slow,
  • Not Synced
it's too beautiful, it's too ugly,
  • Not Synced
    it cannot be done,
  • Not Synced
    it already exists."
  • Not Synced
I have heard everything about the same
    project in the same week.
  • Not Synced
And I got really, really annoyed.
  • Not Synced
I got a [bit] gray hair,
  • Not Synced
    started to dress in black
    like a true architect --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
and one morning I woke up and I said,
  • Not Synced
    "Daan, stop.
  • Not Synced
    This is dragging you down.
  • Not Synced
You have to do something with this.
  • Not Synced
You have to use it as an ingredient,
  • Not Synced
    as a component."
  • Not Synced
And so we decided to build,
  • Not Synced
to realize the famous "Yes, but" chair.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And this is an existing chair
    by [... ... ],
  • Not Synced
    a Dutch design,
  • Not Synced
but we gave it a little "update,"
  • Not Synced
a little "hack" so to speak,
  • Not Synced
so we placed a little voice
    recognition element right here,
  • Not Synced
and so the moment you sit on that chair,
  • Not Synced
and you say those two horrible,
    creative- destructive, annoying little words,
  • Not Synced
    you get a short,
  • Not Synced
    but pretty intense
  • Not Synced
    little shock on the backside
    of your bottom.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    And that works --
  • Not Synced
    yeah, that works.
  • Not Synced
So some clients have left us,
  • Not Synced
    they got really mad.
  • Not Synced
Fortunately, the good ones have stayed.
  • Not Synced
    And of course we also
    apply it to ourselves.
  • Not Synced
    But ladies and gentelmen,
  • Not Synced
    let's not be afraid.
  • Not Synced
    Let's be curious, yes?
  • Not Synced
    And you know,
  • Not Synced
walking through TED in these days
  • Not Synced
    and hearing the other speakers,
  • Not Synced
and feeling the energy of the crowds,
  • Not Synced
    I was remembering this quote
of the Canadian author, [Arthur Mcluen],
  • Not Synced
    who once famously said,
  • Not Synced
    "On spacecraft earth,
  • Not Synced
    there are no passengers.
  • Not Synced
    We are all crew."
  • Not Synced
And I think this so beautiful.
  • Not Synced
    This is so beautiful.
  • Not Synced
    We're not just consumers,
  • Not Synced
    we're makers.
  • Not Synced
    We make decisions,
  • Not Synced
    we make new inventions,
  • Not Synced
    we make new dreams.
  • Not Synced
And I think if we start implementing
that kind of thinking even more
  • Not Synced
    within today,
  • Not Synced
there's still a whole new world
    to be explored.
  • Not Synced
    All right,
  • Not Synced
    thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
