The magic of QR codes in the classroom - Karen Mensing

0:05 - 0:06As most of you know,
-
0:07 - 0:09QR code stands for quick response code,
-
0:09 - 0:11and it's a two-dimensional bar code
-
0:11 - 0:13that holds a good deal more information
-
0:13 - 0:14than a traditional bar code.
-
0:14 - 0:17They originated in Japan
at the Toyota factory -
0:17 - 0:20to track the manufacturing of car parts.
-
0:20 - 0:23Since then, they've taken
off in popularity, -
0:23 - 0:26and you'll see them everywhere
in consumer advertising. -
0:26 - 0:29When you scan a QR code,
you're instantly taken -
0:29 - 0:32to a variety of tech-based experiences:
-
0:32 - 0:33Could be a text message,
-
0:33 - 0:35could be an audio message,
-
0:35 - 0:36could be a website,
-
0:36 - 0:37could be a video.
-
0:37 - 0:39It's like magic.
-
0:39 - 0:42The tools to create a QR
code are essentially free, -
0:42 - 0:44and the tools to interact with the QR code
-
0:44 - 0:48are increasingly easy and common to use.
-
0:48 - 0:50So, we have this great, free, easy tool,
-
0:50 - 0:52but what can we do with it?
-
0:52 - 0:54Teachers have realized
there's a lot of potential -
0:54 - 0:57for QR codes in the classroom.
-
0:57 - 0:59Recently, I told my class
we would be learning -
0:59 - 1:00some new vocabulary words,
-
1:00 - 1:03something we do
two or three times a month. -
1:03 - 1:04They let out a groan
-
1:04 - 1:07because it's kind of a boring activity.
-
1:07 - 1:09Then, I passed out QR
codes to all my students -
1:09 - 1:12and told them we'd be interacting
with them with devices, -
1:12 - 1:15and that's how they'd find
their vocabulary list. -
1:15 - 1:18The attitude in the class
changed completely. -
1:18 - 1:19They went from groaning and moaning
-
1:19 - 1:22to excited and enthusiastic.
-
1:22 - 1:25I could teach the exact
same lesson using QR codes -
1:25 - 1:27and not using QR codes
-
1:27 - 1:29and get a completely different attitude.
-
1:29 - 1:31One fun activity to do with QR codes
-
1:31 - 1:33is a scavenger hunt.
-
1:33 - 1:35I create QR codes with tasks
assigned to them. -
1:35 - 1:37I hide them all around the room.
-
1:37 - 1:39Students go with their devices
-
1:39 - 1:41and scan them and have
to complete the task. -
1:41 - 1:44Recently, I hosted a technology
event at my school -
1:44 - 1:46and held a school-wide QR code.
-
1:46 - 1:48Students loved it.
-
1:48 - 1:49In grades K through 6,
-
1:49 - 1:51they were completely engaged and excited,
-
1:52 - 1:53literally running from code to code
-
1:53 - 1:55because they were so excited
-
1:55 - 1:57to see what the next task was going to be.
-
1:57 - 1:59Students who didn't have devices with them
-
1:59 - 2:00were begging their parents
-
2:00 - 2:02to pull out their smart phones
-
2:02 - 2:03so they could participate as well.
-
2:03 - 2:05It was so refreshing to see
-
2:05 - 2:10that level of enthusiasm
and excitement regarding learning. -
2:10 - 2:12A creative use for teachers for QR codes
-
2:12 - 2:14is for positive reinforcement.
-
2:14 - 2:16Put up a poster in your classroom
-
2:16 - 2:17with numbered QR codes,
-
2:17 - 2:19each one leading to a different message.
-
2:19 - 2:21When a student needs some feedback,
-
2:21 - 2:22tell him, 'Go scan number 5.'
-
2:22 - 2:24'Go scan number 22.'
-
2:24 - 2:25And the message will say,
-
2:25 - 2:28'Great job today! I love your enthusiasm.'
-
2:28 - 2:30'Nice work! I can see you're
working really hard.' -
2:30 - 2:32It's so much more exciting for a student
-
2:32 - 2:34to get out of their seat,
-
2:34 - 2:35scan a code,
-
2:35 - 2:36and interact with something
-
2:36 - 2:39for then the teacher
just to say, 'Good job!' -
2:39 - 2:40It's much more memorable.

2:40 - 2:44Libraries have endless uses for QR codes:
-
2:44 - 2:46scannable book reviews,
-
2:46 - 2:48lists of reading suggestions
-
2:48 - 2:50and book lists on the walls,
-
2:50 - 2:51biographies.
-
2:51 - 2:53Imagine pulling a biography
-
2:53 - 2:55of Martin Luther King, Jr. off the shelf,
-
2:55 - 2:56scanning a QR code,
-
2:56 - 2:57and being instantly taken
-
2:57 - 2:59to the "I Have a Dream" speech.
-
2:59 - 3:02It literally makes learning come alive.
-
3:02 - 3:04QR codes can add a nice 21st century twist
-
3:04 - 3:06to a traditional assignment.
-
3:06 - 3:08Each year, I have my class
-
3:08 - 3:10create a poster for a book report,
-
3:10 - 3:11something we've all probably done
-
3:11 - 3:13at some point in elementary school.
-
3:13 - 3:15It's a little bit of a boring assignment.
-
3:15 - 3:16The kids enjoy it okay.
-
3:16 - 3:18This time, I changed it up,
-
3:18 - 3:20and the second step of the assignment
-
3:20 - 3:22was to have them record their voices,
-
3:22 - 3:25recording an audio QR code of themselves
-
3:25 - 3:27giving a book review of the book.
-
3:27 - 3:29They then printed the QR code,
-
3:29 - 3:31attached it to the poster,
-
3:31 - 3:34and gave the poster a hands-on,
interactive quality. -
3:34 - 3:35We put them in the hallway
-
3:35 - 3:37and kids from all different classrooms
-
3:37 - 3:38were walking by, scanning them,
-
3:38 - 3:40listening to these book reviews.
-
3:40 - 3:41It was so much more fun
-
3:41 - 3:43than just a traditional poster.
-
3:43 - 3:47My class recently had
the privilege of participating -
3:47 - 3:48in a QR code lesson
-
3:48 - 3:50led by a teacher across the country.
-
3:50 - 3:53If the video chat weren't exciting enough,
-
3:54 - 3:57the fact that she incorporated
QR codes into the lesson, -
3:57 - 3:58my students, from their seat,
-
3:58 - 4:00from the comfort of their classroom,
-
4:00 - 4:03could actually scan the codes
on the computer screen, -
4:03 - 4:06interacting with her QR codes
from 3,000 miles away, -
4:06 - 4:10was incredibly exciting
and memorable for my students. -
4:10 - 4:13They did not stop talking
about the lesson for weeks. -
4:13 - 4:15You just don't get that kind of memorable,
-
4:15 - 4:18engaging experience using a worksheet
-
4:18 - 4:20or reading from a textbook.
-
4:20 - 4:23QR codes have a possible use
-
4:23 - 4:24in every grade level,
-
4:24 - 4:26with every subject area.
-
4:26 - 4:28Kindergarten teachers
can have their students -
4:28 - 4:32scan a QR code that leads
to a phonics lesson. -
4:32 - 4:34The music teacher can
create audio QR codes -
4:34 - 4:37of their students playing
instruments or singing. -
4:37 - 4:40PE teachera can post
real-time race results -
4:40 - 4:41or athletic event results,
-
4:42 - 4:43all attached to a QR code.
-
4:43 - 4:46The student council
or the PTO can advertise -
4:46 - 4:49upcoming school events
all around the school -
4:49 - 4:52and send home on flyers via QR code.

4:52 - 4:56The possibilities with this
free and easy tool are endless. -
4:56 - 4:59If used properly, QR
codes have the potential -
4:59 - 5:00to awaken a student,
-
5:00 - 5:02transform a lesson,
-
5:02 - 5:04and bring down the walls
of your classroom, -
5:04 - 5:09creating the ultimate 21st
century learning opportunity.
