you've just met Claron McFadden. -
2:15 - 2:17She is a world-class soprano singer
-
2:17 - 2:19who studied in Rochester, New York.

2:20 - 2:23Her celebrated operatic roles
are numerous and varied. -
2:23 - 2:29In August 2007, Claron was awarded
the Amsterdam Prize for the Arts, -
2:29 - 2:31winning praise for her brilliance,
-
2:31 - 2:34her amazing and extensively
wide repertoire -
2:34 - 2:36and her vivid stage personality.

2:36 - 2:38Please welcome Claron McFadden.

2:49 - 2:51Claron McFadden: The human voice:
-
2:52 - 2:56mysterious, spontaneous, primal.
-
2:58 - 3:03For me, the human voice is the vessel
on which all emotions travel -- -
3:03 - 3:05except, perhaps, jealousy.
-
3:07 - 3:08And the breath,
-
3:08 - 3:10the breath is the captain of that vessel.
-
3:12 - 3:14A child is born,
-
3:15 - 3:17takes its first breath --
-
3:18 - 3:22(Inhales)
-
3:23 - 3:24Whah!
-
3:25 - 3:28And we behold the wondrous beauty
-
3:30 - 3:31of vocal expression --
-
3:32 - 3:35mysterious, spontaneous
-
3:36 - 3:37and primal.
-
3:39 - 3:42A few years ago, I did
a meditation retreat in Thailand. -
3:42 - 3:43I wanted a place
-
3:44 - 3:48where I would have total silence
and total solitude. -
3:49 - 3:51I spent two weeks at this retreat
-
3:51 - 3:53in my own little hut --
-
3:53 - 3:56no music, no nothing -- sounds of nature,
-
3:57 - 4:00trying to find the essence
of concentration, -
4:01 - 4:02being in the moment.
-
4:03 - 4:05On my last day,
-
4:05 - 4:07the woman who looked after the place,
-
4:07 - 4:10she came and we spoke for a minute,
-
4:10 - 4:11and then she said to me,
-
4:12 - 4:14"Would you sing something for me?"
-
4:15 - 4:18And I thought, but this is a place
of total quiet and silence. -
4:18 - 4:19I can't make noise.
-
4:21 - 4:23She said, "Please, sing for me."
-
4:24 - 4:26So I closed my eyes,
-
4:27 - 4:28I took breath
-
4:30 - 4:32and the first thing that came up and out
-
4:33 - 4:35was "Summertime,"
-
4:36 - 4:37Porgy and Bess.
-
4:37 - 4:41(Singing) Summertime
and the livin' is easy. -
4:42 - 4:46Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high.
-
4:46 - 4:50Oh, your daddy's rich
and your ma is good-lookin'. -
4:50 - 4:51So hush little baby,
-
4:51 - 4:54don't you cry.
-
4:55 - 4:57And I opened my eyes,
-
4:57 - 5:00and I saw that she had her eyes closed.
-
5:01 - 5:03And after a moment, she opened her eyes
-
5:03 - 5:05and she looked at me and she said,
-
5:06 - 5:07"It's like meditation."
-
5:09 - 5:11And in that moment I understood
-
5:11 - 5:14that everything I had gone
to Thailand to look for, -
5:14 - 5:16to search for,
-
5:16 - 5:18I had it already in my singing --
-
5:20 - 5:23the calm, but alertness,
-
5:23 - 5:26the focus, but awareness,
-
5:27 - 5:29and being totally in the moment.
-
5:31 - 5:33When you're totally in the moment --
-
5:33 - 5:34when I'm totally in the moment,
-
5:34 - 5:37the vessel of expression is open.
-
5:37 - 5:39The emotions can flow from me
-
5:39 - 5:40to you
-
5:40 - 5:42and back.
-
5:43 - 5:44It's an extremely profound experience.
-
5:47 - 5:49There's a piece by a composer,
-
5:49 - 5:52an American composer called John Cage.
-
5:52 - 5:53It's called "Aria."
-
5:53 - 5:58It was written for an amazing singer
called Cathy Berberian. -
5:58 - 6:01And the thing about this piece
that's so special -- -
6:02 - 6:03if you see it behind me --
-
6:04 - 6:06it's not notated in any way.
-
6:07 - 6:10No notes, no flats, no sharps.
-
6:11 - 6:13But it's a kind of structure.
-
6:13 - 6:16And the singer, within this structure,
-
6:16 - 6:20has total freedom
to be creative, spontaneous. -
6:20 - 6:21For example,
-
6:23 - 6:24there are different colors
-
6:24 - 6:28and each color gets
a different type of singing -- -
6:28 - 6:32pop, country and western, opera, jazz --
-
6:32 - 6:35and you just have
to be consistent with that color. -
6:36 - 6:38You see there are different lines.
-
6:39 - 6:41You choose in your own tempo
in your own way -
6:41 - 6:42to follow the line,
-
6:42 - 6:44but you must respect it,
-
6:44 - 6:46more or less.
-
6:46 - 6:48And these little dots,
-
6:49 - 6:52these represent a sort of sound
-
6:53 - 6:56that's not a vocal, not a lyrical way
-
6:56 - 6:58of expressing the voice.
-
6:58 - 7:00Using the body -- it could be sneezing,
-
7:00 - 7:02it could be coughing, animals --
-
7:02 - 7:04(Audience member coughs)
-
7:04 - 7:05Exactly. (Laughter)
-
7:05 - 7:07Clapping, whatever.
-
7:08 - 7:10And there's different text.
-
7:10 - 7:14There's Armenian, Russian,
French, English, Italian. -
7:14 - 7:17So within this structure, one is free.
-
7:18 - 7:20To me, this piece is an ode to the voice,
-
7:22 - 7:24because it's mysterious, as we can see.
-
7:26 - 7:28It's quite spontaneous.
-
7:31 - 7:32And it's primal.
-
7:33 - 7:35So I would like to share
this piece with you, -
