Cindy Sherman: Characters | Art21 "Extended Play"

  • 0:06 - 0:12
    (drawers scraping)
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    - (Cindy) Did you know they have
    press-on nails for pedicures?
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    (chuckles)
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    - (Speaker) Wait a minute-
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    - (Cindy) I haven't tried them yet,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
but I'm really dying to try them,
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    isn't that crazy? (chuckles)
  • 0:27 - 0:28
I'm thinking of just wearing them myself
  • 0:28 - 0:28
    just for a party,
just as a joke, you know?
  • 0:29 - 0:30
I mean, they just, I mean,
    except these aren't as obvious.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    These are maybe more obvious
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    because they have
    little polka dots on them
  • Not Synced
    and they just look like,
  • Not Synced
    'Who would wear little
    polka dots on your toes?'
  • Not Synced
My work is not about fantasizing
  • Not Synced
    about characters or situations.
  • Not Synced
    Some people, I think,
    have thought that
  • Not Synced
    the characters I do were,
  • Not Synced
yeah, as if I've always fantasized
  • Not Synced
    about being a femme fatale
    or whatever, you know,
  • Not Synced
    in my film stills.
  • Not Synced
    Yeah, I don't think of
it as that literal to me.
  • Not Synced
    When I'm doing the characters,
  • Not Synced
    I really don't feel like
    it's some sort of something
  • Not Synced
that grows out of my fantasy,
    my own dreams.
  • Not Synced
In college when I would do it,
  • Not Synced
    I would become a character
  • Not Synced
    and then sort of think,
  • Not Synced
'Well, gee, here I am as Lucille Ball,
    and what do I now?'
  • Not Synced
So then it became sort of a thing
  • Not Synced
and a little more like performance.
  • Not Synced
And I started to do it
    going to parties sometimes.
  • Not Synced
I remember once getting all in character
  • Not Synced
and wanting to go to some opening
  • Not Synced
and feeling like something was missing,
  • Not Synced
and then I put a pillow under the dress
  • Not Synced
and went as a pregnant woman.
  • Not Synced
When I moved to New York,
  • Not Synced
I did it a few times,
  • Not Synced
but it suddenly wasn't the same
  • Not Synced
I think because in the city
  • Not Synced
I felt like I needed my own
  • Not Synced
sort of, street armour, or whatever
  • Not Synced
just to deal with the street,
  • Not Synced
and people out on the street,
  • Not Synced
    and the crazy people,
    and the real crazy people
  • Not Synced
who looked like some of the characters
  • Not Synced
    I was looking like.
  • Not Synced
And I didn't want to be confused,
    I guess, with them.
  • Not Synced
    That's the advantage
    of being in them myself
  • Not Synced
is I can just play around.
  • Not Synced
    When I've experimented
    with other people in them,
  • Not Synced
    as models, paid models,
    or friends or family,
  • Not Synced
    I feel like I just,
I don't know what to tell them to do
  • Not Synced
    because I don't really know
  • Not Synced
what it is I'm looking for until I see it.
  • Not Synced
So I tend to sort of rush them
    through the whole process.
  • Not Synced
Then I redo it with myself,
    and it's like grueling,
  • Not Synced
    and it's like grueling,
  • Not Synced
so even though I love to do it,
  • Not Synced
    it's much more work
  • Not Synced
    because I'm like frustrated
  • Not Synced
at trying to capture on film
  • Not Synced
something that I can't even articulate.
  • Not Synced
    Because I don't really know
  • Not Synced
what it is that I am looking for
  • Not Synced
    until I see it.
