Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg Share Their Feelings | Art21 "Extended Play"

  • 0:22 - 0:23
    [NATHALIE DJURBERG]
It is quite brave to put
  • 0:23 - 0:25
anything out there that you did.
  • 0:25 - 0:30
    It's hard to differentiate between
    yourself and the work.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
Where does the work end and I begin?
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    That sounded so cheesy.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    [HANS BERG]
    No, but...
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    [DJURBERG]
    Even though it's true!
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    [LAUGHS]
  • 0:39 - 0:44
    [Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg
    Share Their Feelings]
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    [I ate you up]
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    [I devoured you whole]
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    [BERG]
It was a bit sad to make music to this film.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    It feels very vulnerable.
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    [I spred you thin]
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    [I didn't even leave a crum]
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    [DJURBERG]
    It didn't feel so personal
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    when I was making it.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    Seeing it in the gallery,
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    then it felt very personal--
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    then it felt like,
    "Oh, I'm so sorry."
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    [BOTH LAUGH]
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    [Shame]
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    [DJURBERG]
"Ashamed" is one of my predominant feelings.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
There is usually a sense of shame
  • 1:33 - 1:36
throughout the process of the making.
  • 1:37 - 1:38
It starts out as an idea,
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    which feels very, very solid.
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    It's not.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
It takes some time for me to
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    get to terms with that.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
But then when I come out of the other side,
  • 1:50 - 1:56
the work is not as perfect
    as that flimsy idea felt.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
And now I think that I've been
    so aware of it
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    [LAUGHS]
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    that it's losing the grip
    a little bit.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    [Desire]
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    [BERG]
In "How to Slay a Demon,"
  • 2:24 - 2:27
I think a lot about addiction
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    and wanting something
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    and then not getting it.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
I wanted the music to be
almost like the voice of addiction.
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    So very hypnotic, alluring--
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    almost like a siren song,
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    luring you into something.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    [DJURBERG]
    The wanting for something more.
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    The wanting for something else.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    The joy, thinking,
    "Oh, I got it!"
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    and then it didn't stay.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
I mean, how many times did the
"I got it" feeling fall apart?
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    [BERG]
That connects well to "This Is Heaven."
  • 3:18 - 3:20
He feels like he deserves things.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
I wanted the music to be
    "shameless winner" music.
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    He's just the winner.
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    He just deserves this.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    I wanted this 80s vibe
because it feels like everything is great--
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    completely, without any reflection.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    [DJURBERG]
    Great until it becomes disgusting.
  • 3:41 - 3:44
That is the only music I feel ashamed when
    I hear.
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    [BOTH LAUGH]
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    [BERG]
    Which is perfect!
  • 3:46 - 3:46
    [BOTH LAUGH]
  • 3:49 - 3:52
[BERG] He thinks he's going to stay
    in this happy state forever.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    [DJURBERG]
    Until it becomes too much.
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    [BERG]
    Until you want more,
  • 3:55 - 3:57
and then it's not heaven anymore.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    [Happiness]
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    [Happiness & Despair]
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    [BERG] The show is called,
"One Last Trip to The Underworld."
  • 4:12 - 4:14
You don't know if it's one last trip
  • 4:14 - 4:16
and then you're free from whatever it is.
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    Or it's one last trip,
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    and then you're never
    coming out of there again.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    [DJURBERG]
    In joy, we feel whole,
  • 4:32 - 4:35
because in the second of the joy,
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    there isn't anything else.
  • 4:38 - 4:38
    It's just that...
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    usually it's so short.
  • 4:44 - 4:49
    Then the other feeling that
when you're in a bad state,
  • 4:49 - 4:50
    that that will last forever.
  • 4:55 - 4:59
The fear of being trapped in that despair
  • 4:59 - 5:01
is like a lie that is so strong
  • 5:01 - 5:04
that it tricks me every time--
  • 5:05 - 5:08
that not one emotional state has ever lasted.

[Nothing for the ones coming after]
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    [I choked]
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    [I swollowed]
  • 5:16 - 5:17
    Seeing the truth,
  • 5:17 - 5:20
especially maybe a truth about yourself,
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    can be painful,
  • 5:21 - 5:25
    but that's really important because
it leads to bigger freedom after...
  • 5:27 - 5:27
    maybe.
