Amara Editor: Translate a video

  • 0:00 - 0:04
    The Amara subtitle editor
is a simple and fun to use platform.
  • 0:05 - 0:08
In this video we will show you
how to use it to translate.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    Before you get started,
    make sure to check out
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    the Subtitling Guidelines, over here.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
    Generally, the guidelines include;
    having less than 42 characters,
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    are less than two lines
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    and remain visible
    long enough to be read.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    More information on guidelines
    can be found here.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    In the translation mode
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    the source language
is on the bottom left of the editor
  • 0:32 - 0:35
and your target language is on its right.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    Type your translation
in the box below the video.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    If needed, remember to translate
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    the title and description,
    over here, too,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    When you're done translating,
    click on start syncing
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    to bring up the timeline.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    The timecodes of the translation
are copied from the source language,
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    but you can alter them
    with the timing tool.
  • 0:55 - 1:00
You can copy or clear the timing,
or move and adjust them on the timeline.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
The lock icon keeps the source language
    and target language scrolling together
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    and unlocking it
    allows the target language
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    to scroll independently,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
in case you need to realign the timecodes.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    This is especially useful
    when the number of characters
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    in the target language
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    is vastly different from that
    of the source language.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    Last but not least,
    time to review!
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    Make sure to look
    for any orange warning signs
  • 1:26 - 1:29
that tell you that your subtitles
    don't follow the guidelines.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    To learn more about
how to use the Amara Editor
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    check out the links
    in the description box below
  • 1:35 - 1:36
    or leave us a comment.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    Thank you for watching
    and Happy Subtitling!
