Is it normal for my anxiety & depression to come and go? #KatiFAQ

  • 0:02 - 0:03
    Hey everybody! Happy Thursday
  • 0:03 - 0:05
and since it's Thursday here I actually
  • 0:05 - 0:07
have a bunch of different things to
  • 0:07 - 0:07
    talk about today.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    So let's get going! Right?
  • 0:09 - 0:11
The first thing is I'm starting to think
  • 0:11 - 0:13
that our community is growing and I
  • 0:13 - 0:15
know that a lot of you help each other
  • 0:15 - 0:17
like in the comments. You talk amongst
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    yourselves on katimorton.com, my website,
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    you do the same.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
You really help each other and I was
  • 0:23 - 0:25
thinking, what should we call ourselves
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    as a community?
  • 0:26 - 0:29
You know, like uhh Miranda Sings has the
  • 0:29 - 0:31
Mirfandas and PewDiePie has the Bros.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
And uhh, you know Hannah Hart has the
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    hartosexuals. Hart-o-sexuals.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
Um, so what should we call ourselves?
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    I don't know.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    I wish minions wasn't copyrighted.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
I was talking to Carly about this on
  • 0:45 - 0:48
Twitter and I wish minions had not been
  • 0:48 - 0:50
so popular. But then maybe we wouldn't
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    have talked about minions anyways,
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    I don't know.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
But, let me know. Leave it in the comments
  • 0:55 - 0:57
Are there any ideas, any cute catchy
  • 0:57 - 0:58
things that we think will be cool as a
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    community to call ourselves?
  • 1:00 - 1:02
Because I think it would be cool to have
  • 1:02 - 1:04
that and then when we do meet ups, we get
  • 1:04 - 1:06
together, we do things we have a name for
  • 1:06 - 1:08
it. Maybe I'll make tee shirts. Hey!
  • 1:08 - 1:10
And there are new t-shirts on my
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    spread shirt thing.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
I haven't put the ones up for the men yet
  • 1:13 - 1:13
    so stay tuned for that.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
But I'm putting those together as well.
  • 1:15 - 1:16
I'm trying to make them a little more
  • 1:16 - 1:18
something that I would want to wear
  • 1:18 - 1:21
that's not just a tree, with fun sayings
  • 1:21 - 1:22
and things like that. So check them out!
  • 1:22 - 1:24
And let me know what you think.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
Okay, so that was my first thing.
  • 1:26 - 1:27
Now the question that I'm going to answer
  • 1:27 - 1:29
today, and I kind of like doing
  • 1:29 - 1:31
one question each because then I get to
  • 1:31 - 1:32
really talk about it. Kind of like the
  • 1:32 - 1:34
olden days, when I just rambled on and on
  • 1:34 - 1:37
and on and on and on, you get the idea.
  • 1:37 - 1:38
Okay, so the first question and only
  • 1:38 - 1:41
question is "Hey Kati, is it normal for
  • 1:41 - 1:44
things such as depression, anxiety, etc.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
to sort of come and go, like sometimes
  • 1:47 - 1:48
they're so bad you really can't function
  • 1:48 - 1:50
at all and other times it's like they
  • 1:50 - 1:52
barely exist? Also, is it normal for my
  • 1:52 - 1:55
self harm to improve my mood so that I
  • 1:55 - 1:58
can't even really remember the issue?
  • 1:58 - 2:00
I've found that sometimes I have a week
  • 2:00 - 2:02
that I feel okay, but then I look back
  • 2:02 - 2:04
and I have self harmed every day that week
  • 2:04 - 2:06
and I think that's why my week was okay.
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    Does that make sense? Thanks."
  • 2:07 - 2:09
And I wanna talk about this for two
  • 2:09 - 2:10
reasons because it touches on two
  • 2:10 - 2:12
different things that a lot of people
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    struggle with.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
Number one being depression, anxiety for
  • 2:16 - 2:18
those things to come and go.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
And I think I may have talked about this
  • 2:20 - 2:21
in the past. I've talked about a lot of
  • 2:21 - 2:23
things you guys but it's definitely
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    normal. That's honestly why depression,
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    anxiety, all that stuff.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
Well I guess mainly depression, but all of
  • 2:29 - 2:30
those feelings that come along with
  • 2:30 - 2:32
depression which can be even like an
  • 2:32 - 2:37
anxious feeling is under mood disorders.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
And our mood can shift and our mood can
  • 2:39 - 2:41
change and some days we feel better than
  • 2:41 - 2:44
others and worse and so on. . .
  • 2:44 - 2:46
Because different things are going on at
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    different times, and everyone experiences
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    that.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
I even, as a person who doesn't struggle
  • 2:51 - 2:54
with depression, have good days and bad
  • 2:54 - 2:56
days. And so you have to always,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
I find this is always the issue is that
  • 2:58 - 3:01
people think that okay well this person or
  • 3:01 - 3:04
if you're talking to yourself, I, have a
  • 3:04 - 3:06
mental illness therefore I have no other
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    normal baseline.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
But that's wrong, because even though you
  • 3:11 - 3:12
have a mental illness, let's say you
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    struggle with depression, you're still
  • 3:14 - 3:16
going to have the normal person ups and
  • 3:16 - 3:17
downs and good days and bad days.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
Yours may just be amplified by the fact
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    that you struggle with depression.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
And so taking that into consideration and
  • 3:23 - 3:25
thinking, well do other people have this
  • 3:25 - 3:27
and like, do they talk about it coming
  • 3:27 - 3:29
and going? Does my best friend have good
  • 3:29 - 3:31
days and bad days? Or is it normal for
  • 3:31 - 3:33
some people to feel really good, then
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    feel really bad?
  • 3:34 - 3:37
The answer is yes. It varies day to day,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    moment to moment. Okay.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
Second part of this question and another
  • 3:41 - 3:42
reason I thought it was really cool to
  • 3:42 - 3:45
answer it "is it normal for my self harm
  • 3:45 - 3:47
to improve my mood, so I can barely
  • 3:47 - 3:50
remember the issue?" Uh, ya! Hello! It's a
  • 3:50 - 3:53
coping skill. I don't mean that like duh,
  • 3:53 - 3:56
but that's the truth. That's what we talk
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    about all the time.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
I think often people forget that we use
  • 4:00 - 4:02
things that are unhealthy, like drugs,
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    alcohol, self harm, eating disorders,
  • 4:04 - 4:08
exercise to the max like over exercise,
  • 4:08 - 4:10
obviously some exercise is good, but
  • 4:10 - 4:13
we use those things as coping skills and
  • 4:13 - 4:16
they're detrimental to us but they help
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    in the moment.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
And sometimes they don't even help any
  • 4:19 - 4:21
more and they're still hanging around.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
And we're like why the fuck are you still
  • 4:23 - 4:26
here? But it's definitely there for a
  • 4:26 - 4:27
    reason. It serves a purpose.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
And for you, whoever asks this question it
  • 4:30 - 4:32
improves your mood and makes it so you
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    don't even remember the issue.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
Ta da! Coping skill is working, but you
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    really don't like it.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
And that's why we have to replace our
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    eating disorders, our self harm,
  • 4:41 - 4:44
our alcoholism, whatever it is, why it's
  • 4:44 - 4:46
so important to replace it with a
  • 4:46 - 4:47
    healthy one.
  • 4:47 - 4:49
And yes it may take like ten healthy ones
  • 4:49 - 4:51
to even barely get to the point where
  • 4:51 - 4:53
you're like okay I can tolerate it.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
I can tolerate the feelings, the emotions
  • 4:55 - 4:59
the issue where it only takes cutting once
  • 4:59 - 5:02
I know it doesn't always equate, like one
  • 5:02 - 5:05
to one, but know that it's worth the fight
  • 5:05 - 5:07
Do you want to be self harming your whole
  • 5:07 - 5:08
life? Trying to hide your scars,
  • 5:08 - 5:09
trying to hide it from people.
  • 5:09 - 5:12
It ends up not really being a good thing
  • 5:12 - 5:14
for us. And so, of course it can help in
  • 5:14 - 5:15
the moment, but let's think long term.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
Let's try to replace it with other
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    healthy coping skills,
  • 5:19 - 5:21
and if you haven't checked it out on my
  • 5:21 - 5:22
    website katimorton.com I have a
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    free self harm workbook.
  • 5:24 - 5:25
And if any of you have had trouble
  • 5:25 - 5:26
downloading it, I know a lot of times it
  • 5:26 - 5:28
gets in into junk folders or doesn't come
  • 5:28 - 5:31
through. I'm not sure why some of you
  • 5:31 - 5:32
    have trouble and others don't.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
But you can always let me know in the
  • 5:34 - 5:36
comments, and I will correct it on my
  • 5:36 - 5:38
side and shoot it back out to you.
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    Okay. I love you all.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
I will see you on Saturday with
  • 5:42 - 5:43
    a journal topic.
  • 5:43 - 5:44
And thanks for everybody sending those to
  • 5:44 - 5:47
me. And then I'm on my way, well I'll see
  • 5:47 - 5:49
you Monday, but then I'm heading up north
  • 5:49 - 5:50
    to the northwest.
  • 5:50 - 5:51
So if you're going to be at VloggerFair,
  • 5:51 - 5:53
I can't wait to meet you.
  • Not Synced
    Talk to you soon. Bye!
