My Kid Says They're Transgender

  • Not Synced
When your kid tells you that they are
  • Not Synced
    transgender, what do you do?
  • Not Synced
    Forty-one percent of transgender adults
  • Not Synced
    have attempted suicide,
  • Not Synced
mostly as an adolescent or young adult.
  • Not Synced
    Parental support can dramatically reduce
  • Not Synced
    the risk of suicide
  • Not Synced
by three and a half times,
  • Not Synced
but many parents are terrified of doing
  • Not Synced
    the wrong thing.
  • Not Synced
So what should you do when your child
  • Not Synced
tells you that they are transgender?
  • Not Synced
The first thing to realize is that there
  • Not Synced
is a very good chance the child is right.
  • Not Synced
In nearly all the studies I am aware of,
  • Not Synced
    no child regretted transitioning.
  • Not Synced
I've spoken with two nationally recognized
  • Not Synced
endocrinologists that work with trans kids
  • Not Synced
and they are aware of only one case of
  • Not Synced
regret in the thousands they have treated.
  • Not Synced
Additionally, I have never met a single
  • Not Synced
person who has transitioned and regretted
  • Not Synced
    it.
  • Not Synced
I have never a parent of a trans kid
  • Not Synced
    who regretted letting their kid
  • Not Synced
    transition.
  • Not Synced
I've only ever met parents who regretted
  • Not Synced
not letting their kid transition sooner.
  • Not Synced
Regardless of their identity, in the end
  • Not Synced
    you have two choices:
  • Not Synced
    reject or accept their declaration.
  • Not Synced
    If you reject them,
  • Not Synced
    no matter the end result,
  • Not Synced
you will contribute to their harm
  • Not Synced
and increase the risk of mental illness.
  • Not Synced
Studies have shown that regardless of
  • Not Synced
    what happens outside the home,
  • Not Synced
    familial support can literally
  • Not Synced
    save your kid's life!
  • Not Synced
    Familial support reduces suicide
  • Not Synced
by three and a half times
  • Not Synced
    and substance abuse
  • Not Synced
by two and a half times.
  • Not Synced
    If you as the parent
  • Not Synced
    reject your child's identity,
  • Not Synced
    you are the largest
  • Not Synced
    and most negatively-impactful bully
  • Not Synced
    in your child's life,
  • Not Synced
more so than any and potentially ALL of
  • Not Synced
    the bullies at school.
  • Not Synced
That is, when your child say something
  • Not Synced
    to you about their identity,
  • Not Synced
    and you say no,
  • Not Synced
    you are telling them that
  • Not Synced
they cannot trust how they feel,
  • Not Synced
they cannot trust you to listen
  • Not Synced
    and hear them,
  • Not Synced
    and they cannot trust themselves.
  • Not Synced
    That creates an
  • Not Synced
    invalidating childhood environment,
  • Not Synced
    and invalidating environments are hotbeds
  • Not Synced
for the formation of many serious
  • Not Synced
mental illnesses that can last a lifetime.
  • Not Synced
If you choose to affirm their identity
  • Not Synced
    no matter the end result,
  • Not Synced
you are telling your child that
  • Not Synced
    they can trust you,
  • Not Synced
that they can confide in you,
  • Not Synced
that they are allowed to trust themselves
  • Not Synced
    and their own feelings,
  • Not Synced
and that you trust them to learn
  • Not Synced
    and figure themselves out.
  • Not Synced
This is part of how you build
  • Not Synced
    a healthy parent-child relationship.
  • Not Synced
    A reminder:
  • Not Synced
Up to forty-one percent of trans adults
  • Not Synced
have attempted suicide at least once,
  • Not Synced
    most as kids.
  • Not Synced
    If you reject their
  • Not Synced
    declaration of identity,
  • Not Synced
you increase this risk of suicide.
  • Not Synced
If you affirm them, you reduce the risks.
  • Not Synced
And so much so that in one study,
  • Not Synced
    socially transitioned children
  • Not Synced
    with supportive families
  • Not Synced
    reported depression rates
  • Not Synced
    indistinguishable from cisgender youth.
  • Not Synced
It is also important to keep in mind
  • Not Synced
that by the time your kid
  • Not Synced
brings this to you, the parent,
  • Not Synced
    they have probably spent months
  • Not Synced
    or maybe years
  • Not Synced
crying themselves to sleep at night
  • Not Synced
wondering if you will still love them.
  • Not Synced
This declaration to you is not a whim.
  • Not Synced
This is a well thought-through statement,
  • Not Synced
and in this moment you have
  • Not Synced
a rare opportunity to show your kid that
  • Not Synced
    they can trust you,
  • Not Synced
that they can confide in you.
  • Not Synced
    In the end,
  • Not Synced
you as the parent have the choice:
  • Not Synced
you can either increase the risk for harm
  • Not Synced
    and suicide by rejecting them,
  • Not Synced
or you can dramatically reduce that risk
  • Not Synced
    by affirming their identity.
  • Not Synced
    It is your choice.
  • Not Synced
Don't be your child's first bully.
