The surprising science of alpha males

  • Not Synced
    Well, I have known many
    alpha males in my life,
  • Not Synced
    chimpanzee alpha males,
  • Not Synced
and I'm going to talk about
    what an alpha male is,
  • Not Synced
because I think we can all learn
a lot from our close relatives
  • Not Synced
    where we have alpha males.
  • Not Synced
And as an example, I want to give you
Amos, a male that I knew
  • Not Synced
    who was a young male
    and he was alpha male,
  • Not Synced
    he was very popular,
  • Not Synced
    but he got sick
  • Not Synced
and he lost his position because,
    you know, chimpanzee males
  • Not Synced
they can spot from a mile away
    if you are weak
  • Not Synced
    and they went for him,
  • Not Synced
    and he lost his position,
and then he got sicker and sicker
  • Not Synced
    until at some point
  • Not Synced
    we had to isolate him.
  • Not Synced
The group lived on a grassy island,
  • Not Synced
and we had to isolate him in a cage,
  • Not Synced
but we cracked open the cage
so that the rest of the chimps
  • Not Synced
    still had access to him.
  • Not Synced
And what happened was most touching.
  • Not Synced
Other chimps would bring food to him,
  • Not Synced
they would bring wood wool to him,
  • Not Synced
which is this thing that they use
to sleep in and build nests out of,
  • Not Synced
    and females would put
the wood wool behind his back.
  • Not Synced
He was leaning heavily against the wall,
  • Not Synced
and look, the way we do with pillows
and to patients in a hospital,
  • Not Synced
    they were putting
    that stuff behind his back.
  • Not Synced
And I thought, this is the way
to go for an alpha male.
  • Not Synced
    He was loved and respected,
and everyone was taking care of him,
  • Not Synced
and this is not always how it goes,
  • Not Synced
because some males don't answer well
    when they lose their position.
  • Not Synced
    So Amos was an example
of a male who was liked as a leader,
  • Not Synced
and I think the term alpha male,
  • Not Synced
if you look it up on the internet,
  • Not Synced
you will find all these business books
that tell you how to be an alpha male,
  • Not Synced
    and what they mean
is how to beat up others
  • Not Synced
and beat them over the head
and let them know that you are boss
  • Not Synced
and don't mess with me and so on.
  • Not Synced
    And basically an alpha male
    for them is a bully.
  • Not Synced
    And I really don't like
    that kind of description,
  • Not Synced
because I am actually partly responsible
    for the term "alpha male"
  • Not Synced
    because I wrote this book
    "Chimpanzee Politics,"
  • Not Synced
which was recommended by Newt Gingrich
  • Not Synced
    to freshmen congressmen.
  • Not Synced
I don't know what good it did,
but he recommended that book to them,
  • Not Synced
    and after that the term
    "alpha male" became very popular.
  • Not Synced
But I think it is used
    in a mischaracterization.
  • Not Synced
It's used in a very superficial way
  • Not Synced
    that doesn't relate to what
    a real alpha male is.
  • Not Synced
And so I'm here to explain what that is.
  • Not Synced
    The term itself goes back
    Actually much further.
  • Not Synced
It goes back to the '40s and '50s,
    research on wolves,
  • Not Synced
    and basically the definition
    is very simple.
  • Not Synced
    The highest ranking male
    is the alpha male.
  • Not Synced
    The highest ranking female
    is the alpha female.
  • Not Synced
    Every primate group
has one alpha male, one alpha female,
  • Not Synced
not more than that, there's only one.
  • Not Synced
And I will explain how that goes.
  • Not Synced
    So first, the body language.
  • Not Synced
What you see here is two male chimpanzees
  • Not Synced
    who are the same size,
  • Not Synced
    but one is walking upright,
    has his hair up,
  • Not Synced
has a big rock in his hand,
    and he's the alpha male.
  • Not Synced
The other male is ?? to him,
  • Not Synced
    is being submissive to him
    and bowing for him,
  • Not Synced
and that is the sort of ritual they need
to go through many times a day
  • Not Synced
in order to have a stable relationship.
  • Not Synced
I'll show you a video from the field.
  • Not Synced
What you will see here is a female
    ?? to an alpha male
  • Not Synced
and you will see how that goes.
  • Not Synced
    The male is approaching,
  • Not Synced
    she grunts at him,
  • Not Synced
he has all his hair up,
  • Not Synced
    and he displays.
  • Not Synced
I'm actually standing far too close.
  • Not Synced
A chimpanzee is far stronger than I am,
  • Not Synced
and I just was not very prudent
    this particular video.
  • Not Synced
So what you saw him do
  • Not Synced
is he was lifting himself up
    and standing on two legs
  • Not Synced
    and putting his arms out.
  • Not Synced
    That's called the bipedal swagger.
  • Not Synced
    It's a very common posture
    in high-ranking males,
  • Not Synced
    and it's very recognizable
because humans do this kind of stuff.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Humans do this all the time.
  • Not Synced
    And what I really like
    about this particular picture
  • Not Synced
is the two old guys to the side.
  • Not Synced
    This is very chimpanzee.
  • Not Synced
    In chimpanzees,
  • Not Synced
    we have usually old males
    who are over the hill
  • Not Synced
    who cannot be alpha male
    themselves anymore,
  • Not Synced
    but they start playing games
    and forming coalitions
  • Not Synced
and behind the backs of others,
  • Not Synced
    and they become extremely influential,
and you may actually have old males
  • Not Synced
    who are more influential
    than the alpha male himself.
  • Not Synced
    Just as an example,
  • Not Synced
    the three males that I
    used to work with most
  • Not Synced
at the Dutch Zoo long ago,
    there where I worked,
  • Not Synced
    and the middle male here
is a 17-year old alpha male.
  • Not Synced
    The male who is grooming
on the side is twice as old
  • Not Synced
and this old male has made him the leader.
  • Not Synced
So you can imagine that that old male
has an enormous amount of power,
  • Not Synced
    because he has made
    the alpha male alpha male.
  • Not Synced
    The male on the right
  • Not Synced
    is individually the strongest male.
  • Not Synced
In captivity, you can test it out,
  • Not Synced
and you can know that this male
has no trouble with either one.
  • Not Synced
    He has only trouble
with the combination of the two.
  • Not Synced
    And so the coalition formation
that goes on in chimpanzee society
  • Not Synced
makes it much more complex than you think.
  • Not Synced
    It means, for example,
  • Not Synced
that the smallest male in a group
    can be the alpha male.
  • Not Synced
    You don't need to be
    the biggest and strongest male.
  • Not Synced
The smallest male, if he has
the right friends and keeps them happy,
  • Not Synced
    or he has female support,
  • Not Synced
he can be the alpha male.
  • Not Synced
    So the coalition system
    makes everything complex,
  • Not Synced
and I'm always waiting here in the US
  • Not Synced
    for the primaries,
    the end of the primaries,
  • Not Synced
    because that's a moment
where you need to demonstrate unity.
  • Not Synced
Now let me first show you
how the unity is shown in chimpanzees.
  • Not Synced
What you see here is two males on the left
  • Not Synced
    who are standing together.
  • Not Synced
    You also see the big
    canine teeth that they have.
  • Not Synced
And they're standing together and they
demonstrate to the rest of the group,
  • Not Synced
    "We are together.
  • Not Synced
    We are a unit."
  • Not Synced
    The males on the right
    are walking together in synchrony.
  • Not Synced
    That's another way of demonstrating
    that you are together.
  • Not Synced
    And so demonstrating unity
    is extremely important
  • Not Synced
    in a coalition system,
  • Not Synced
and as I said, in the primaries
always I'm waiting for that moment
  • Not Synced
    because then you have
two members of the same party
  • Not Synced
who have been fighting with each other,
  • Not Synced
    and they need to come
    together at some moment.
  • Not Synced
And it leads to very awkward situations.
  • Not Synced
People who don't like each other
    need to embrace each other
  • Not Synced
    and stand together,
  • Not Synced
    and that's absolutely essential
for the unity of the party,
  • Not Synced
and if you don't do that,
    the party may fall apart.
  • Not Synced
And so if it doesn't go well,
    like in this particular case
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter),
  • Not Synced
then the party is in deep doo-doo
  • Not Synced
because they have not demonstrated unity.
  • Not Synced
So that's a very important part
    of the coalition system,
  • Not Synced
and that's something that we share
    between humans and chimpanzees.
  • Not Synced
Now how do you become an alpha male?
  • Not Synced
First of all, you need to be
    impressive and intimidating
  • Not Synced
and demonstrate your vigor on occasion,
  • Not Synced
and show that you are very strong
  • Not Synced
    and there's all sorts
    of ways of doing that.
  • Not Synced
But other things that you need to do
is you need to be generous.
  • Not Synced
    So, for example, males
    who go on a campaign
  • Not Synced
    to dethrone the leader,
  • Not Synced
which may take two or three months
  • Not Synced
    where they're testing
all the coalitions in the group,
  • Not Synced
    they also become extremely generous.
  • Not Synced
They share food very easily with everyone.
  • Not Synced
    Or they start to tickle
    the babies of the females.
  • Not Synced
    They're normally, male chimpanzees,
    not particularly interested in infants,
  • Not Synced
but when they are campaigning like that,
  • Not Synced
they get very interested in infants
    and they tickle them
  • Not Synced
and they try to curry favor
    with the females.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    So in humans, of course,
  • Not Synced
I am always intrigued by these men
    who are candidates
  • Not Synced
and hold babies up like this.
  • Not Synced
    This is not particularly
    something that babies like,
  • Not Synced
but since it is a signal
to the rest of the world,
  • Not Synced
they need to hold them in the air.
  • Not Synced
And I was really intrigued by,
  • Not Synced
when we had a female candidate
    in the last election,
  • Not Synced
    the way she held babies
    was more like this,
  • Not Synced
which is what babies really like.
  • Not Synced
But she of course didn't need
    to send the message
  • Not Synced
that she could hold a baby
    without dropping it,
  • Not Synced
which was what the man was doing.
  • Not Synced
So this is a very common tactic,
  • Not Synced
    and male chimpanzees,
they spend a lot of time
  • Not Synced
currying favor with all sorts of parties
  • Not Synced
    when they are campaigning.
  • Not Synced
Now what are the privileges and the costs
  • Not Synced
    of being an alpha male?
  • Not Synced
    The biggest privilege is female.
  • Not Synced
    Food is really irrelevant.
  • Not Synced
    Male chimpanzees can go
    a week without food
  • Not Synced
if there's a female in estrus
and they're sexually interested in her.
  • Not Synced
    Food is secondary to sex,
  • Not Synced
and so the male chimpanzees --
  • Not Synced
    and we evolutionary biologists,
of course, we have an explanation for this
  • Not Synced
is that sex leads to reproduction
  • Not Synced
    and reproductive success
    is the measure of evolution.
  • Not Synced
    That's how everything evolves,
  • Not Synced
and so if males can enhance
    their reproductive success
  • Not Synced
    by being high ranking,
  • Not Synced
    you get automatically the ambition
to be high ranking in the males.
  • Not Synced
    So that's the privilege.
  • Not Synced
The costs, one cost is of course
  • Not Synced
that you need to keep your partners happy.
  • Not Synced
So if you come to power
with the support of an old male,
  • Not Synced
you need to let that old male
    mate with females.
  • Not Synced
If you don't do that, that old male
is going to get mad at you
  • Not Synced
and you're going to lose him as a partner.
  • Not Synced
So there's a transaction going on.
  • Not Synced
If you become alpha male this way,
you need to keep your partners happy.
  • Not Synced
And so that's one of the costs.
  • Not Synced
    The second cost is that
    everyone wants your position.
  • Not Synced
    Alpha male position
    is a very important position,
  • Not Synced
and everyone wants to take it from you,
  • Not Synced
    and so you constantly
    have to watch your back.
  • Not Synced
You have to be extremely vigilant.
  • Not Synced
For example, you have to disrupt
    the coalitions of others,
  • Not Synced
    and that's what male
    chimpanzees do quite a bit.
  • Not Synced
Divide and rule strategies, they have.
  • Not Synced
And so that's a very stressful situation,
and we actually have data on this.
  • Not Synced
The data comes from the field,
  • Not Synced
from baboons not chimpanzees in this case,
  • Not Synced
    where they did fecal samples
    on the baboons
  • Not Synced
    and they analyzed them
    for glucocorticoids,
  • Not Synced
and what you see here is a graph
  • Not Synced
where you see that the local ranking
    the male baboon is,
  • Not Synced
the higher is his cortisol level
  • Not Synced
    in the feces,
  • Not Synced
but the alpha male, as you see,
  • Not Synced
has just as high a level
    as the lowest-ranking males,
  • Not Synced
and so you may think that being alpha male
is nice and dandy and is wonderful,
  • Not Synced
    but it's actually
    a very stressful position,
  • Not Synced
    and we can demonstrate
    that physiologically.
  • Not Synced
    Now, what are the obligations?
  • Not Synced
    And here, for me,
    it gets really interesting,
  • Not Synced
and it deviates very much from
your typical image of the alpha male.
  • Not Synced
    The alpha male
    has two sorts of obligations.
  • Not Synced
One is to keep the peace in the group.
  • Not Synced
We call that the control role,
  • Not Synced
to control fights in the group,
  • Not Synced
and the second is to be the most empathic,
  • Not Synced
    the consoler in chief, basically,
of the nation, so to speak.
  • Not Synced
So first of all, keeping the peace.
  • Not Synced
This is a male who stops a fight
    between two females.
  • Not Synced
Two females on the left and the right
    have been screaming and yelling
  • Not Synced
    at each other over food,
  • Not Synced
    because food is very
    important for the females,
  • Not Synced
and so he stops the fight between them
and stands between them like this.
  • Not Synced
And it's very interesting to me
that alpha males, when they do this,
  • Not Synced
    they become impartial.
  • Not Synced
    They don't support their mom
    or their best buddy.
  • Not Synced
    No, no, they stop fights
  • Not Synced
    and they come up
    for the underdog in general.
  • Not Synced
    And this makes them extremely
    popular in the group,
  • Not Synced
    because they provide security for
the lowest-ranking members of the group,
  • Not Synced
    and so they become impartial,
  • Not Synced
    which is an unusual condition
for a chimpanzee to be in,
  • Not Synced
    because they're usually
very fond of their friends and so on,
  • Not Synced
and with alpha males who are good at this,
  • Not Synced
    they can be very effective
at keeping the peace in the group.
  • Not Synced
And the second thing they do
is they show empathy for others.
  • Not Synced
Now, I do an enormous amount
    of research on empathy,
  • Not Synced
and I don't have time to go into it,
  • Not Synced
but empathy is nowadays a topic
that we study in rodents and dogs
  • Not Synced
    and elephants and primates,
  • Not Synced
    all sorts of animals.
  • Not Synced
And what you see here is two bonobos.
  • Not Synced
    The one in front
  • Not Synced
has been beaten up in a fight.
  • Not Synced
The one in the back puts
her arms around her and consoles her.
  • Not Synced
This is also actually how we measure
    empathy in young children,
  • Not Synced
by looking at how they respond
    to distressed individuals.
  • Not Synced
    And high-ranking males,
they do a lot of this.
  • Not Synced
    High-ranking males provide
an enormous amount of comfort in the group
  • Not Synced
    and they go to places
    where there are earthquakes
  • Not Synced
or hurricanes and they provide comfort.
  • Not Synced
    The pope does this.
    The presidents do this.
  • Not Synced
All the leaders in the world
    have to do this job.
  • Not Synced
The queen does it and so on.
  • Not Synced
They all have to do this job,
  • Not Synced
    so providing consolation,
and that's a very important task.
  • Not Synced
And males who are good at these two,
  • Not Synced
keeping the peace and providing comfort,
  • Not Synced
    they become extremely popular leaders,
  • Not Synced
    and there's actually
    some self-interest involved in it.
  • Not Synced
They don't do it just for the group,
  • Not Synced
because it also stabilizes their position.
  • Not Synced
    The more popular a male
    becomes as alpha male,
  • Not Synced
and the more the rest of them
respects them and looks up to them,
  • Not Synced
the better their position is defended
  • Not Synced
in case it's going to be
    challenged by somebody else,
  • Not Synced
because then, of course, the whole group
is going to support that male
  • Not Synced
    because they want to keep
a leader who is good for them.
  • Not Synced
So the group is usually very supportive
of males who are good leaders,
  • Not Synced
and it's not supportive at all of bullies,
  • Not Synced
and when bullies lose their position,
  • Not Synced
    they made end up in
    a very bad situation there.
