What is mental health?
-
0:05 - 0:09So efficient and hushed are
our brains in their day to day operations, -
0:09 - 0:11we are apt to miss
-
0:11 - 0:14what an extraordinary
and complicated achievement it is -
0:14 - 0:15to feel mentally well.
-
0:16 - 0:19A mind in a healthy state is,
in the background, -
0:19 - 0:23continually performing
a near-miraculous set of manoeuvres -
0:23 - 0:27that underpin our moods
of clear-sightedness and purpose. -
0:27 - 0:29To appreciate what mental health might be,
-
0:30 - 0:32and therefore what its opposite involves,
-
0:32 - 0:34we might take a moment to consider
-
0:34 - 0:38some of what will be going on in the folds
of an optimally-functioning mind. -
0:39 - 0:42First and foremost,
a healthy mind is an editing mind, -
0:43 - 0:45an organ that manages to sieve
-
0:45 - 0:50from thousands of stray, dramatic,
disconcerting, or horrifying thoughts -
0:50 - 0:54those particular ideas and sensations
that actively need to be entertained -
0:54 - 0:57in order for us to direct
our lives effectively. -
0:57 - 1:02Partly, this means keeping at bay
punitive and critical judgements -
1:02 - 1:06that might want to tell us repeatedly
how disgraceful and appalling we are, -
1:06 - 1:10long after harshness has ceased
to serve any useful purpose. -
1:10 - 1:13When we are interviewing for a new job
or taking someone on a date, -
1:14 - 1:17a healthy mind doesn’t force us
to listen to inner voices -
1:17 - 1:19that insist on our unworthiness.
-
1:19 - 1:22It allows us to talk to ourselves
as we would to a friend. -
1:24 - 1:29At the same time, a healthy mind
resists the pull of unfair comparisons. -
1:29 - 1:30It doesn’t constantly allow
-
1:30 - 1:34the achievements and successes
of others to throw us off course, -
1:34 - 1:36and reduce us to a state
of bitter inadequacy. -
1:37 - 1:38It doesn’t torture us
-
1:38 - 1:41by continually comparing
our condition to that of people -
1:41 - 1:46who have, in reality, had very different
upbringings and trajectories through life, -
1:46 - 1:48A well-functioning mind
-
1:48 - 1:53recognizes the futility and cruelty
of constantly finding fault -
1:53 - 1:54with its own nature.
-
1:55 - 2:00Along the way, a healthy mind keeps
a judicious grip on the faucet of fear. -
2:01 - 2:02It knows that, in theory,
-
2:02 - 2:06there is an endless number of things
that we could worry about: -
2:06 - 2:07a blood vessel might fail,
-
2:07 - 2:09a scandal might erupt,
-
2:09 - 2:11the planes' engines could
sheer from their wings… -
2:11 - 2:13but it has a good sense of the distinction
-
2:13 - 2:16between what could conceivably happen
-
2:16 - 2:18and what is, in fact, likely to happen.
-
2:19 - 2:21And it is able to leave us in peace
-
2:21 - 2:24as regards the wilder
eventualities of fate, -
2:24 - 2:28confident that awful things
will either not unfold -
2:28 - 2:30or could be dealt with ably enough
-
2:30 - 2:31if ever they did so.
-
2:32 - 2:35A healthy mind avoids
catastrophic imaginings. -
2:35 - 2:38It knows that there are
broad and stable stone steps - -
2:38 - 2:40not a steep and slippery incline -
-
2:40 - 2:42between itself and disaster.
-
2:44 - 2:48A healthy mind has compartments
with heavy doors that shut securely. -
2:49 - 2:51It can compartmentalise
where it needs to - -
2:51 - 2:54not all thoughts belong at all moments.
-
2:54 - 2:56While talking to a grandmother,
-
2:56 - 3:00the mind prevents the emergence of
images of last night's erotic fantasies. -
3:01 - 3:02While looking after a child,
-
3:02 - 3:05it can repress its more cynical
and misanthropic insights. -
3:06 - 3:09Aberrant thoughts
about jumping on a train line -
3:09 - 3:11or harming oneself with a sharp knife
-
3:11 - 3:13can remain brief peculiar flashes,
-
3:13 - 3:15rather than repetitive fixations.
-
3:16 - 3:20A healthy mind has mastered
the techniques of censorship. -
3:21 - 3:24A healthy mind can quieten
its own buzzing preoccupations -
3:24 - 3:28in order, at times,
to focus on the world beyond itself. -
3:29 - 3:32It can be present and engaged
with what and who is immediately around. -
3:33 - 3:37Not everything it could feel
has to be felt at every moment. -
3:37 - 3:39It can be a good listener.
-
3:40 - 3:44A healthy mind combines
an appropriate suspicion of certain people -
3:44 - 3:46with a fundamental trust in humanity.
-
3:47 - 3:49It can take
an intelligent risk with a stranger. -
3:50 - 3:53It doesn’t extrapolate
from life’s worst moments -
3:53 - 3:56in order to destroy the possibility
of anything good emerging -
3:56 - 3:57with a new acquaintance.
-
3:58 - 4:00A healthy mind knows how to hope.
-
4:01 - 4:04It identifies,
and then hangs on tenaciously -
4:04 - 4:07to a few reasons to keep going.
-
4:07 - 4:11Grounds for despair, anger
and sadness are, of course, all around. -
4:12 - 4:13But the healthy mind knows
-
4:13 - 4:16how to bracket negativity
in the name of endurance. -
4:17 - 4:21It clings to evidence
of what is still beautiful and kind. -
4:21 - 4:22It remembers to appreciate.
-
4:23 - 4:27It can, despite everything,
still look forward to a hot bath, -
4:27 - 4:29some dried fruit, or dark chocolate,
-
4:29 - 4:31a chat with a friend,
-
4:31 - 4:32or a satisfying day of work.
-
4:33 - 4:36It refuses to let itself be silenced
-
4:36 - 4:38by all the many sensible arguments
-
4:38 - 4:40in favor of rage and despondency.
-
4:41 - 4:44Outlining some of the features
of a healthy mind -
4:44 - 4:46helps us to identify what can go awry
-
4:46 - 4:48when we fall ill.
-
4:48 - 4:50We should acknowledge the extent
-
4:50 - 4:55to which mental illness is ultimately
as common and as essentially unshameful, -
4:55 - 4:57as its bodily counterpart.
-
4:57 - 4:59True mental health
-
4:59 - 5:04involves a frank acceptance of
how much ill health there will have to be -
5:04 - 5:07in even the most ostensibly
competent and meaningful life. -
5:08 - 5:11And we should be
no more reluctant to seek help -
5:11 - 5:14than we are when we develop
a chest infection or a sore knee, -
5:14 - 5:19and should consider ourselves
no less worthy of love and sympathy. -
