What is the difference between freedom and lack of self discipline?

  • 0:21 - 0:26
    (Bell)
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    (FRENCH)
Why do I feel so free?
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    Sometimes I wonder if
I am not lacking all discipline.
  • 0:40 - 0:44
I would like to know how
    to tell the difference
  • 0:44 - 0:49
between the moments where I really
listen to myself and respect myself
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    and the moments
    where I let myself go.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
I often feel that I have a lot of freedom.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    But sometimes I wonder
if I am lacking self discipline.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
So how can I know the difference between
  • 1:11 - 1:14
listening to myself and respecting myself,
  • 1:16 - 1:23
and just letting myself do anything
I like without any kind of boundaries?
  • 1:26 - 1:30
How can I find a balance between
    freedom and self respect
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    and also appropriate action?
  • 1:38 - 1:45
There are many of us that have
    the same kind of experiences.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
Sometimes we are doing very well,
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    we practice the five mindfulness
    trainings perfectly,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    sometimes not so perfectly.
  • 2:00 - 2:06
    I think we should not
    think of the practice
  • 2:07 - 2:09
too much in terms of discipline.
  • 2:11 - 2:16
    Because the practice
    can be pleasant and joyful.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    We do not have to
    force ourselves to practice.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    It is like walking meditation.
  • 2:30 - 2:36
You don't have to force yourself
to walk slowly, to make efforts.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
Because the practice of walking meditation
    can be very pleasant.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
And every step can bring you joy,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    pleasure,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    peace
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    touching life deeply.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
And if we practice like that,
  • 3:04 - 3:08
if we keep practicing like that
    it becomes a habit.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    And we want to practice.
  • 3:13 - 3:17
We do not want to impose
    the practice on ourselves.
  • 3:20 - 3:25
    Whether Thay is alone or
Thay is with a group of people
  • 3:25 - 3:27
he walks very much the same way.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    Because it gives him pleasure
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    And he is ...
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    He is profiting,
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    profiting from the...
  • 3:57 - 4:02
... from the hours, the minutes, the days
that are given to him to live.
  • 4:04 - 4:11
He does not want to waste,
    'gaspiller', any moment.
  • 4:13 - 4:18
    He wants to live
each moment of his life deeply.
  • 4:19 - 4:23
    And these moments can be
    both nourishing and healing
  • 4:24 - 4:30
not only for him but for his disciples,
for his friends and for his society.
  • 4:31 - 4:36
So you don't have to impose
    the practice on yourself.
  • 4:38 - 4:42
    It becomes a habit
    rather than a discipline.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
    And the second thing
is that you need a Sangha.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    Because with a Sangha,
    with a practice Sangha
  • 4:52 - 5:01
we are reminded to go back to
our practice in case we forget to enjoy.
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    Because the practice
    is also the enjoyment.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    Very often the conditions
    of happiness are there
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    but we are not there.
  • 5:17 - 5:22
We do not know how to recognise them
and make good use of them
  • 5:22 - 5:25
to be happy right here and right now.
  • 5:26 - 5:30
    We are seeking pleasure
    and happiness in the future.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    That is a waste.
  • 5:32 - 5:40
So in that case, if there is a brother,
a sister around you who practices well,
  • 5:40 - 5:43
you are reminded to go back
  • 5:44 - 5:49
and seek pleasure, happiness and freedom
    right there and right then.
  • 5:50 - 5:54
And that is the practice of
    taking refuge in the Sangha.
  • 5:55 - 6:02
Everyone of us, in order to maintain
our practice, to support our practice,
  • 6:02 - 6:09
should try to set up a group
    of practitioners in our area,
  • 6:09 - 6:11
so that we can take refuge.
  • 6:11 - 6:16
We can profit from the group energy,
  • 6:17 - 6:21
    in order to advance on
    our path of practice.
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    (FRENCH)
    Good luck!
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    Good luck my dear!
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    (Laughing)
  • 6:41 - 6:56
    (Bell)
