0:36 - 0:40On seashore far a green oak towers,
-
0:40 - 0:45And to it with a gold chain bound,
-
0:45 - 0:50A learned cat whiles away the hours
-
0:50 - 0:55By walking slowly round and round.
-
0:55 - 1:00To right he walks, and sings a ditty;
-
1:00 - 1:06To left he walks, and tells a tale.
-
1:06 - 1:11What marvels there! A mermaid sitting
-
1:11 - 1:15High in a tree, a sprite, a trail
-
1:15 - 1:18Where unknown beasts move never
seen by -
1:18 - 1:23Man's eyes, a hut on chicken feet,
-
1:23 - 1:27Without a door, without a window,
-
1:27 - 1:32An evil witch's Ione retreat;
-
1:32 - 1:39The woods and valleys there are
teeming -
1:39 - 1:42With strange things. Dawn brings
waves that, gleaming, -
1:42 - 1:45Over the sandy beaches creep,
-
1:45 - 1:49And from the clear and shining water
-
1:49 - 1:54Step thirty goodly knights escorted
-
1:54 - 1:59By their Old Guardian, of the deep
-
1:59 - 2:06An ancient dweller. There a dreaded
And hated tsar is captive ta'en; -
2:06 - 2:09There, as all watch, for cloud banks
headed, -
2:09 - 2:14Across the sea and o'er a plain,
-
2:14 - 2:20A warlock bears a knight in train.
-
2:20 - 2:26A princess there weeps locked in
a cell, -
2:26 - 2:32And Grey Wolf serves her very well;
-
2:32 - 2:35There, in a mortar, beneath the skies,
-
2:35 - 2:40All of itself, Baba Yaga flies;
-
2:40 - 2:47There pines Kashchei and lusts for
gold; -
2:47 - 2:51All breathes of Russ...
-
2:51 - 2:55The Russ of old!
-
2:55 - 3:00There once was I, friends, and
the cat, -
3:00 - 3:06As near him 'neath the oak I sat
-
3:06 - 3:12And drank of sweet mead at my leisure,
-
3:12 - 3:17Recounted tales to me...With pleasure
-
3:17 - 3:23One that I liked do I recall
-
3:23 - 3:28And here and now will share with all...
-
3:28 - 3:34There once lived an old man
and his goodwife -
3:34 - 3:39On the shore of the deep blue ocean;
-
3:39 - 3:43They lived in a tumble-down hovel
-
3:43 - 3:49For thirty-three summers and winters.
-
3:49 - 3:53The old man used to fish for his
living, -
3:53 - 3:57And his wife spun yarn on her distaff.
-
3:57 - 4:01He once cast his net in the ocean,
-
4:01 - 4:07And pulled it up with mud from
the bottom; -
4:07 - 4:12He again cast his net in the ocean,
-
4:12 - 4:18And this time caught nothing but
seaweed; -
4:18 - 4:24When he cast his net for the third
time, -
4:24 - 4:28One fish was all that he landed,
-
4:28 - 4:32No common fish, though,
but a goldfish. -
4:32 - 4:35Now the goldfish began to implore
him, -
4:35 - 4:39And it spoke like a real human being:
-
4:39 - 4:43"Put me back, old man, into the ocean!
-
4:43 - 4:46I will pay you a right royal ransom,
-
4:46 - 4:50I will give you whatever you ask me."
-
4:50 - 4:55The old man was astonished and
frightened - -
4:55 - 5:00He'd been fishing for thirty-three
summers, -
5:00 - 5:06But had not heard of any fish
talking. -
5:06 - 5:11So with care he untangled the
goldfish -
5:11 - 5:15And tenderly said as he did so:
-
5:15 - 5:19"God bless you, my dear little
goldfish! -
5:19 - 5:22Thank you kindly, I don't want your
ransom. -
5:22 - 5:26Go back to your home in the ocean,
-
5:26 - 5:41And roam where you will without
hindrance." -
5:41 - 5:45To his wife the old fisherman
hastened -
5:45 - 5:50To tell her about this great marvel.
-
5:50 - 5:54"I caught only one fish this morning -
-
5:54 - 5:59A goldfish it was, most uncommon;
-
5:59 - 6:02It spoke like a Christian, and begged
me -
6:02 - 6:06To put it back into the ocean,
-
6:06 - 6:10And promised to pay a rich ransom,
-
6:10 - 6:18To give me whatever I asked for.
-
6:18 - 6:23But how could I ask for a ransom?
-
6:23 - 6:27I released it without any payment."
-
6:27 - 6:30His wife started scolding her husband:
-
6:30 - 6:34"Oh you simpleton! Oh you great silly!
-
6:34 - 6:38Couldn't make a mere fish pay
a ransom! -
6:38 - 6:41You at least might have asked for
a wash-tub - -
6:41 - 8:39For ours is all falling to pieces!"
-
8:39 - 8:43The old man returned to the seashore,
-
8:43 - 8:49Where the blue waves were frolicking
lightly. -
8:49 - 8:58He called out aloud for the goldfish,
-
8:58 - 9:02And the goldfish swam up and
demanded: -
9:02 - 9:06"What is it, old man, you are
wanting?" -
9:06 - 9:09With a bow, the old man said
in answer: -
9:09 - 9:12"Forgive me, Your Majesty Goldfish!
-
9:12 - 9:15My old woman has scolded me roundly,
-
9:15 - 9:20Won't leave me alone for a minute,
-
9:20 - 9:24She says that she wants a new
wash-tub, -
9:24 - 9:29For ours is all falling to pieces."
-
9:29 - 9:32The goldfish murmured in answer:
-
9:32 - 9:37"Do not worry, go home, God be
with you - -
9:37 - 9:41Very well, you shall have a new
wash-tub." -
9:41 - 9:46To his wife the old fisherman
hastened, -
9:46 - 9:50And behold - there it was, the new
wash-tub. -
9:50 - 9:54But she scolded him louder than ever:
-
9:54 - 9:59"Oh you simpleton! Oh you great silly!
-
9:59 - 10:03To ask for a tub - a mere wash-tub!
-
10:03 - 10:09What good can you get from a wash-
tub? -
10:09 - 10:13Return to the goldfish, you silly,
-
10:13 - 10:26Bow down low and ask for a cottage."
-
10:26 - 10:30Again he went back to the seashore.
-
10:30 - 10:34And this time the blue sea was
troubled. -
10:34 - 10:39He called out aloud for the goldfish,
-
10:39 - 10:43And the goldfish swam up and
demanded: -
10:43 - 10:46"What is it, old man, you are
wanting?" -
10:46 - 10:51With a bow, the old man said in
answer: -
10:51 - 10:54"Forgive me, Your Majesty Goldfish!
-
10:54 - 10:58My old woman is angrier than ever,
-
10:58 - 11:02Won't leave me alone for a minute -
-
11:02 - 11:06The old scold says she wants a new
cottage." -
11:06 - 11:09The goldfish murmured in answer:
-
11:09 - 11:14"Do not worry, go home, God be with
you! -
11:14 - 12:55So be it! You'll have a new cottage!"
-
12:55 - 12:59So back the old man turned his
footsteps; -
12:59 - 13:03Not a sign did he see of his hovel.
-
13:03 - 13:06In its place stood a new gabled
cottage, -
13:06 - 13:10With a chimney of brick, newly
whitewashed, -
13:10 - 13:15A fence with oak gates stood around
it; -
13:15 - 13:18And there sat his wife at a window;
-
13:18 - 13:21When she saw him, she scolded him
roundly: -
13:21 - 13:25"Oh you simpleton! Oh you great silly!
-
13:25 - 13:29To ask for no more than a cottage!
-
13:29 - 13:33Go and bow to the goldfish, and tell
it -
13:33 - 13:37That I'm tired of being a peasant,
-
13:37 - 13:48That I want to be made a fine lady."
-
13:48 - 13:52The old man then returned to
the seashore, -
13:52 - 13:58Where the ocean was restlessly
foaming, -
13:58 - 14:03He called out aloud for the goldfish.
-
14:03 - 14:07The goldfish swam up and demanded:
-
14:07 - 14:11"What is it, old man, you're wanting?"
-
14:11 - 14:15With a bow, the old man said in
answer: -
14:15 - 14:19"Forgive me, Your Majesty Goldfish!
-
14:19 - 14:23My old woman is madder than ever,
-
14:23 - 14:27She gives me no rest for a second,
-
14:27 - 14:31Says she's tired of being a peasant,
-
14:31 - 14:36And wants to be made a fine lady."
-
14:36 - 14:38The goldfish murmured in answer:
-
14:38 - 16:34"Do not worry, go home, God be with
you." -
16:34 - 16:38To his wife the old fisherman
hastened, -
16:38 - 16:40And what did he see?
-
16:40 - 16:43A tall mansion;
-
16:43 - 16:46On its white marble stairs - his old
woman. -
16:46 - 16:52She was wearing a rich sable jacket,
-
16:52 - 16:56And a head-dress, in gold all
embroidered; -
16:56 - 17:00Her neck was with pearls heavy laden;
-
17:00 - 17:02She wore golden rings on her fingers;
-
17:02 - 17:07She was shod in the softest red
leather; -
17:07 - 17:10Zealous servants bowed meekly before
her, -
17:10 - 17:16As she cuffed them and rated them
roundly. -
17:16 - 17:19The old man then approached his wife,
saying: -
17:19 - 17:23"Greetings, your ladyship, greetings,
fine lady! -
17:23 - 17:29Now I hope that your soul is
contented!" -
17:29 - 17:32She angrily bade him be silent
-
17:32 - 17:38And sent him to serve in the stables.
-
17:38 - 19:03First a week slowly passed, then
another, -
19:03 - 19:07The old woman grew prouder than ever.
-
19:07 - 19:10One morning she sent for her husband,
-
19:10 - 19:14And said: " Bow to the goldfish and
tell it -
19:14 - 19:18I'm tired of being a lady,
-
19:18 - 19:25And I want to be made a Tsaritsa."
-
19:25 - 19:29Her husband implored her in terror,
-
19:29 - 19:33Saying: " Woman, you've surely gone
crazy! -
19:33 - 19:36You can't even talk like a lady!
-
19:36 - 19:40You'd be mocked at all over the
kingdom!" -
19:40 - 19:43His old woman grew madder than ever,
-
19:43 - 19:46Slapped his face and then shouted in
passion: -
19:46 - 19:51"How dare you, muzhik, stand and
argue, -
19:51 - 20:13Stand and argue with me, a fine lady?
-
20:13 - 20:18Go at once - if you don't , then I
warn you, -
20:18 - 20:26You'll be dragged to the shore,
willy-nilly." -
20:26 - 20:32The old man went down to the seashore.
-
20:32 - 20:37The ocean was swollen and sullen.
-
20:37 - 20:42He called out aloud for the goldfish,
-
20:42 - 20:45And the goldfish swam up and
demanded: -
20:45 - 20:49"What is it, old man, you're wanting?"
-
20:49 - 20:52With a bow, the old man said in
answer: -
20:52 - 20:57"Forgive me, Your Majesty Goldfish!
-
20:57 - 21:00Again my old woman's gone crazy!
-
21:00 - 21:04Now she's tired of being a lady!
-
21:04 - 21:10She wants to be made a Tsaritsa."
-
21:10 - 21:12The goldfish murmured in answer:
-
21:12 - 21:18"Do not worry, go home, God be with
you! -
21:18 - 23:04Very well! She shall be a Tsaritsa!"
-
23:04 - 23:08To his wife the old fisherman
hastened, -
23:08 - 23:12And what did he see? A grand palace;
-
23:12 - 23:16In the palace he saw his old woman,
-
23:16 - 23:20At the table she sat, a Tsaritsa,
-
23:20 - 23:23Attended by nobles and boyars;
-
23:23 - 23:27They were pouring choice wines in
her goblet, -
23:27 - 23:33She was nibbling sweet gingerbread
wafers; -
23:33 - 23:36Around her, grim guards stood in
silence, -
23:36 - 23:40With halberds upon their broad
shoulders. -
23:40 - 23:44The old man was aghast when he saw
this, -
23:44 - 23:48He bowed to her feet and said humbly:
-
23:48 - 23:52"Greetings, Oh mighty Tsaritsa!
-
23:52 - 23:57Now I hope that your soul is
contented!" -
23:57 - 24:02But she gave not a glance at her
husband - -
24:02 - 24:06She ordered him thrust from her
presence. -
24:06 - 24:09The boyars and nobles all hastened
-
24:09 - 24:14And drove him with blows from the
chamber; -
24:14 - 24:17The guards at the door waved their
halberds -
24:17 - 24:20And threatened to cut him to pieces.
-
24:20 - 24:24All the people derided him, saying:
-
24:24 - 24:28"Serves you right, now, you ill-bred
old fellow. -
24:28 - 24:31You churl - this will teach you
a lesson, -
24:31 - 24:56To keep to your station in future!"
-
24:56 - 25:50First a week slowly passed, then
another; -
25:50 - 25:54The old woman grew prouder than ever.
-
25:54 - 26:38She sent for her husband one morning,
-
26:38 - 26:42And her chamberlain haled him before
her. -
26:42 - 26:45The old woman spoke thus to her
husband: -
26:45 - 26:51"Go, bow to the goldfish, and tell it
-
26:51 - 26:56That I'm tired of being Tsaritsa,
-
26:56 - 27:03Of the seas I want to be mistress,
-
27:03 - 27:11With my home in the blue ocean waters;
-
27:11 - 27:19The goldfish I want for my servant
-
27:19 - 27:25To do my commands and my errands."
-
27:25 - 27:31The old man durst not contradict her,
-
27:31 - 27:36Nor open his lips to make answer.
-
27:36 - 27:41He sadly set out for the seashore.
-
27:41 - 27:45A tempest raged over the ocean,
-
27:45 - 27:50Its waters were swollen and angry,
-
27:50 - 27:57Its billows were boiling with fury.
-
27:57 - 28:02He called out aloud for the goldfish.
-
28:02 - 28:06The goldfish swam up and demanded:
-
28:06 - 28:11"What is it, old man, you're wanting?"
-
28:11 - 28:15With a bow, the old man said in
answer: -
28:15 - 28:20"Forgive me, Your Majesty Goldfish!
-
28:20 - 28:23What shall I do with my cursed old
woman? -
28:23 - 28:27She is tired of being Tsaritsa,
-
28:27 - 28:33Of the seas she now wants to be
mistress, -
28:33 - 28:38With her home in the blue ocean
waters; -
28:38 - 28:43She wants you to be her own servant,
-
28:43 - 29:10To do her commands and her errands."
-
29:10 - 29:13Not a word spoke the goldfish in
answer, -
29:13 - 29:18Itjust swished its tail, and in
silence -
29:18 - 29:22Disappeared in the depths of
the ocean. -
29:22 - 29:27He waited in vain for an answer,
-
29:27 - 29:32And at last turned his steps to
the palace; -
29:32 - 29:36And behold - there again stood his
hovel; -
29:36 - 29:40On the doorstep sat his old woman,
-
29:40 - 30:07With the same broken wash-tub before
her. -
