Distance helps | Roza Tadevosyan | TEDxKids@Yerevan

  • 0:10 - 0:13
    Have you ever asked
    yourself: what is distance?
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    In physics, it's the space
    between two points.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    Have you ever wondered
  • 0:19 - 0:24
how can distance help a person
    find his own peace?
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    I think at some point,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    everyone wants to be
    away from everybody,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    be alone, and just think.
  • 0:30 - 0:35
    For some people, distance means
getting out of their comfort zone.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    For others, it's an adventure,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    for others it’s chance
    to find their personality.
  • 0:39 - 0:45
    Distance makes us realize
    all those details.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    I think at some point
    everybody needs distance
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    to find his-her peaceful world.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    Not many people may know,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    that according to Steve Jobs's
    biography book,
  • 0:57 - 1:06
    he was interested in Buddhism
and when he was working at Atari,
  • 1:06 - 1:12
he wanted to travel to India
    to explore Buddhism deeper.
  • 1:12 - 1:16
    Arriving in India, Steve Jobs
    got to meet the guru
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    who had been reincarnated
and taught him all about Buddhism
  • 1:20 - 1:22
So, he decided to explore it himself.
  • 1:22 - 1:27
He went up to Indian mountains
    and after exploring, came back.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
Right after returning, he founded Apple.
  • 1:30 - 1:36
    It sounds strange nowadays
that an IT genius set up Apple
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    after staying in Indian mountains.
  • 1:40 - 1:45
I think most of us like
    sea paintings by Ayvazovsky,
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    but not everybody knows
  • 1:46 - 1:50
    that he painted the four
most important paintings of his life,
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    when he was alone
    in the Crimea peninsula,
  • 1:53 - 1:58
when there were only him and the sea.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    Distance plays a very important
    role in our life.
  • 2:01 - 2:07
It helps to appreciate the people,
    who were near to us.
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    American writer,
    Aleksandar Hemon, once said:
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    "It seemed that we
    loved each other better,
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    when there were large swathes
    of oceans between us.
  • 2:17 - 2:22
The daily work of love was often
    hard to perform at home."
  • 2:22 - 2:26
I can guess some of you
    think I’m very cruel person
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    and that I don’t care
    about missing each other.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
But believe me, I am more human.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    American “Good Night Lamp”
    company made special lamps,
  • 2:35 - 2:40
    that people take
    with them when they travel,
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    or just will be far
    from relatives or friends.
  • 2:43 - 2:52
So the light turns on, when one
    goes to work, comes back,
  • 2:52 - 2:55
eats, yawns, goes to bed, etc.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    It’s interesting, isn’t it?
  • 2:57 - 3:02
This is how “Good Night Lamp”
    decided to cut the distance.
  • 3:02 - 3:06
After all, let’s love each other,
    both near and far.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    Distance shouldn’t be
    an obstacle for love.
  • 3:09 - 3:14
At the end let me quote
    Nobel prize winner Albert Camus:
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    "Distance is a great science,
  • 3:16 - 3:22
    that helps us to redefine
    us and the world."
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    Thank you!
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    (Applause)
