RSA Shorts - The Power of Empathy

  • 0:01 - 0:02
    slurp, music
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    so what is empathy
  • 0:11 - 0:15
and why is it very different from sympathy
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    empathy fuels connection,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    sympathy drives disconnection
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    empathy, it is very interesting.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
Theresa Wiseman, is a nursing schoar, who studied professions,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
very diverse professions where empathy is relevant
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    and came up with
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    4 qualities of empathy.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
Perspective taking - the ability to
  • 0:34 - 0:36
take the perspective of another person
  • 0:36 - 0:36
    or .. or
  • 0:36 - 0:37
recognise the perspective as their truth
  • 0:37 - 0:38
staying out of judgement, not easy when you enjoy it as much as most of us do .. (crowd laughter)
  • 0:38 - 0:40
Recognising emotion in other people and in communicating that
  • 0:40 - 0:42
Empathy is feeling with people and to me I always think that empathy is kind of sacred space
  • 0:42 - 0:43
when someone has gone into a deep hole and they shout out from the bottom
  • 0:44 - 0:46
  • 0:46 - 0:47
  • 0:48 - 0:52
  • 0:52 - 0:56
  • 0:56 - 1:01
  • 1:01 - 1:04
Hey I am stuck, it's dark
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    and overwhelmed
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    and then we say
  • 1:08 - 1:10
Hey! I'm down. I know what it is like
  • 1:10 - 1:12
down here and you are not alone
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    Sympathy is oooh....
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    (crowd laughter)
  • 1:16 - 1:18
It's bad, uh uh (Crowd laughter)
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    uhhhh... no
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    You want a sandwich?
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    ummm... (Crowd laughter)
  • 1:24 - 1:27
Empathy is a choice and it is vulnerable choice
  • 1:27 - 1:33
because in order to connect with you, I have to connect with something in myself that knows that feeling.
  • 1:34 - 1:39
Rarely, if ever, does an empathic response begins with at least
  • 1:41 - 1:43
(Crowd laughter) I had a ..., yeah, and we do it all the time
  • 1:43 - 1:44
because you know why? Somebody just shared something with us, that is incredibly painful
  • 1:44 - 1:49
  • 1:49 - 1:51
and we are trying to silver lining it
  • 1:51 - 1:55
I dont think that is a verb, but I am using it as one
  • 1:55 - 1:57
We are trying to put a silver lining around it.
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    So, ......... I had a miscarriage
  • 1:59 - 2:01
Oh.. at least you know you can get pregnant.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
I think, my marriage is falling apart
  • 2:03 - 2:05
At least, you have a marriage
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    Crowd laughter
  • 2:09 - 2:11
John is getting kicked out of school
  • 2:11 - 2:13
At least, Sarah is an A student
  • 2:13 - 2:15
But one of the things we do some times
  • 2:15 - 2:20
in the face of very difficult conversations, is
  • 2:20 - 2:22
we try to make things better
  • 2:22 - 2:26
If I share somehing with you that is very difficult, I'd rather you say
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    (sigh)
  • 2:27 - 2:30
I dont even know what to say right now, I am glad you told me
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    (Pause) Because the truth is,
  • 2:33 - 2:36
rarely can a response, make something better.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
What makes something better is connection
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    Pause
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    Music
  • Not Synced
