Everything You Need to Know About Greenwashing
-
0:00 - 0:02Is the "green" product
-
0:02 - 0:03you just bought actually
-
0:03 - 0:05environmentally friendly?
-
0:05 - 0:08Or is a company misleading you
with false claims to get your money? -
0:08 - 0:09Weel, it might be the latter,
-
0:10 - 0:11which is also known as greenwashing.
-
0:12 - 0:14You've probably heard the term,
-
0:14 - 0:16but greenwashing
is a form of misleading marketing -
0:16 - 0:17that makes you, the consumer,
-
0:17 - 0:20believe companies are doing more
to protect the environment -
0:20 - 0:21than they actually are.
-
0:22 - 0:26Like when a company releases
a new "green" program or product, -
0:26 - 0:27but the core of the business
-
0:27 - 0:29is still polluting
or completely unsustainable. -
0:29 - 0:32So today we're gonna go over
how to spot greenwashing, -
0:32 - 0:33and how to find products
-
0:33 - 0:35that are actually
environmentally friendly. -
0:39 - 0:41The term greenwashing was first coined
in 1986 -
0:41 - 0:43by environmentalist Jay Westerveld
-
0:43 - 0:47after he saw a beach resort
asking guests to reuse towels -
0:47 - 0:49in order to reduce ecological damage,
-
0:49 - 0:50and help protect the oceans and reefs.
-
0:51 - 0:52But the irony was
-
0:52 - 0:54that the resort was in the middle
of an expansion, -
0:54 - 0:57which means they'd be damaging
the ecosystem themselves. -
0:57 - 1:00Westerveld then went on to write about it
in a term papaer, -
1:00 - 1:03which then turned into an essay
for a literary magazine, -
1:03 - 1:05and that's when the term caught on.
-
1:05 - 1:07But one of the earliest examples
of greenwashing -
1:07 - 1:08dates back to the '60s
-
1:08 - 1:10when the electrical company Westinghouse
-
1:10 - 1:11released an ad campaign
-
1:11 - 1:13proclaiming nuclear power plants
-
1:13 - 1:15were clear and safe for the environment.
-
1:15 - 1:18Those ads were also released right after
two nuclear meltdowns -
1:18 - 1:19in Michigan and Idaho.
-
1:20 - 1:23The ads also ignored anything
in regards to nuclear waste. -
1:23 - 1:25Nowadays, being sustainable
-
1:25 - 1:27is something more people care about.
-
1:27 - 1:31So much so that 47% of American consumers
are willing to pay more -
1:31 - 1:32for sustainable products
-
1:32 - 1:34according to a 2019 survery.
-
1:34 - 1:37But greenwashing still remains prominent
in corporate marketing. -
1:37 - 1:42Companies like Nestlé, Shell, BMW
and General Electric -
1:42 - 1:43were all accused of greenwashing
-
1:43 - 1:44over the past 20 years.
-
1:45 - 1:46So how can you, the consumer,
-
1:46 - 1:48look out for these kinds of false claims
-
1:48 - 1:51and buy products
that are actually eco-friendly? -
1:51 - 1:53Well, here are 3 ways
you can look for red flags. -
1:54 - 1:55Number 1:
Be a skeptic -
1:55 - 1:57If something reads like
it's too good to be true, -
1:57 - 1:59then it probably is.
-
1:59 - 2:00For example,
-
2:00 - 2:02a lot of campanies will advertise
their products -
2:02 - 2:05as 100% biodegradable or recyclable.
-
2:05 - 2:06But what they don't put on the label
-
2:06 - 2:09is that it's only biodegradable
or recyclable, -
2:09 - 2:12if it's discard properly
and weathered in the right conditions. -
2:13 - 2:15So this type of greenwashing
captures consumers -
2:15 - 2:18through lack of transparency
and informational context, -
2:18 - 2:19leaving you
to put in the extra work -
2:19 - 2:22to figure out
if the product is as green as they claim. -
2:22 - 2:24Other labelling jargon
to look out for and question -
2:24 - 2:26include terms like:
-
2:26 - 2:27sustainnable
-
2:27 - 2:28socially responsible
-
2:28 - 2:29eco-friendly
-
2:29 - 2:31and recycled content.
-
2:31 - 2:34If you see these words,
don't just assume it's true. -
2:34 - 2:36Look for additional certification
on the label -
2:36 - 2:37to make sure the claim is verified.
-
2:37 - 2:39Which brings us to our second step.
-
2:39 - 2:41Look for certified eco-labels.
-
2:41 - 2:44Some of eco-labels will also include
badges of approval -
2:44 - 2:49from Fairtrade, the EPA's Safer Choice,
Green Seal and B Corporation Certification -
2:49 - 2:50amongst many more.
-
2:50 - 2:52These assesments signify
-
2:52 - 2:54that the product
has met a spesific criteria -
2:54 - 2:58and that it meets federal or international
regulation standards. -
2:58 - 3:00But if there's an eco-label
you don't recognize, -
3:00 - 3:02you can always go online
and cross reference it. -
3:02 - 3:07Website like Ecolabel Index tracks
over 400 eco-labels in 199 countries. -
3:07 - 3:10So you can look up
what each eco-labels means, -
3:10 - 3:12the process behind its certification,
-
3:12 - 3:13and what products are labeled with it.
-
3:14 - 3:16
-
3:16 - 3:18
-
3:19 - 3:20
-
3:21 - 3:22
-
3:24 - 3:26
-
3:27 - 3:28
-
3:30 - 3:31
-
3:32 - 3:33
-
3:34 - 3:35
-
3:37 - 3:38
-
3:39 - 3:40
-
3:41 - 3:42
-
3:44 - 3:48
-
3:49 - 3:51
-
3:52 - 3:54
-
3:56 - 3:57
-
3:58 - 3:59
-
4:00 - 4:02
-
4:03 - 4:05
-
4:06 - 4:07
-
4:10 - 4:12
-
4:13 - 4:15
-
4:16 - 4:17
