Everything You Need to Know About Greenwashing

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    Is the "green" product
  • 0:02 - 0:03
    you just bought actually
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    environmentally friendly?
  • 0:05 - 0:08
Or is a company misleading you
with false claims to get your money?
  • 0:08 - 0:09
Weel, it might be the latter,
  • 0:10 - 0:11
which is also known as greenwashing.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    You've probably heard the term,
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    but greenwashing
is a form of misleading marketing
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    that makes you, the consumer,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    believe companies are doing more
    to protect the environment
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    than they actually are.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
    Like when a company releases
a new "green" program or product,
  • 0:26 - 0:27
but the core of the business
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    is still polluting
    or completely unsustainable.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
So today we're gonna go over
    how to spot greenwashing,
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    and how to find products
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    that are actually
    environmentally friendly.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
The term greenwashing was first coined
    in 1986
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    by environmentalist Jay Westerveld
  • 0:43 - 0:47
after he saw a beach resort
    asking guests to reuse towels
  • 0:47 - 0:49
in order to reduce ecological damage,
  • 0:49 - 0:50
and help protect the oceans and reefs.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    But the irony was
  • 0:52 - 0:54
that the resort was in the middle
    of an expansion,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    which means they'd be damaging
    the ecosystem themselves.
