Ebola easier to stop now than later - Rosling's Factpod #6
-
0:00 - 0:03I am professor Hans Rosling,
-
0:03 - 0:05and I follow day by day
-
0:05 - 0:09the informations about
the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. -
0:09 - 0:13The epidemic is getting
worse, especially in Liberia. -
0:13 - 0:15This graph shows
-
0:15 - 0:17the number of newly infected persons
-
0:17 - 0:20per week in Liberia.
-
0:20 - 0:22Here, it shows
the number of persons infected; -
0:22 - 0:26here, of the weeks, from the end of July
-
0:26 - 0:27until beginning of September.
-
0:27 - 0:28And you can see,
-
0:28 - 0:30that the number infected
-
0:30 - 0:35kept increasing and increasing
all the time. -
0:35 - 0:36The doctors and health staff
-
0:36 - 0:38and the Government in Liberia
-
0:38 - 0:40did their best, together
with the international support -
0:40 - 0:44but the treatments have today.
-
0:44 - 0:46Patients die in the streets,
-
0:46 - 0:48or they die at home,
-
0:48 - 0:49buried without protection.
-
0:49 - 0:53So more and more are getting infected.
-
0:53 - 0:57And the specialists have now done
a prediction for the future; -
0:57 - 1:03each patient here infects
on average 1,7 other persons. -
1:03 - 1:06And that means that just more
and more and more will be infected. -
1:06 - 1:10So the epidemic, with present efforts,
-
1:10 - 1:12will continue like this.
-
1:12 - 1:15And this is the uncertainty range;
-
1:15 - 1:17this means that it is possible
-
1:17 - 1:20that it will go
almost straight up like this. -
1:20 - 1:23But this epidemic can be stopped
-
1:23 - 1:27if just enough hospitals,
temporary hospitals, -
1:27 - 1:29with enough beds, are put in place,
-
1:29 - 1:31so that all patients
-
1:31 - 1:34with suspected or proven Ebola
-
1:34 - 1:36can get the best treatment possible
-
1:36 - 1:39and that they can be treated in a way
-
1:39 - 1:41so they don't infect other,
-
1:41 - 1:43and that those who tragically die
-
1:43 - 1:48are buried without infecting others.
-
1:48 - 1:49But it must be put in place now,
-
1:49 - 1:52otherwise it will continue like this!
-
1:52 - 1:56And then, so much
more effort will be needed. -
1:56 - 1:58The sooner the help will come,
-
1:58 - 2:09the less resources are needed.
