Morten Søkilde: Miniature moments of being
-
0:00 - 0:03(Ticking of clocks)
-
0:10 - 0:12(Sounds of music box)
-
0:17 - 0:23It appeals very much
to the dream world, to recollection. -
0:23 - 0:28And it could also somehow
stimulate the imagination -- -
0:28 - 0:30in a very powerful way.
-
0:32 - 0:37And I in reality, it is perhaps
a desire to create pictures -- -
0:37 - 0:42about stillness and presence.
-
0:48 - 0:51(Sounds of )
-
0:54 - 0:58The miniature is the refuge of the great.
-
0:58 - 1:02The quality of miniatures
or small things is in reality, -
1:02 - 1:06the concentration of information.
-
1:06 - 1:13The sharper the diamond is ground
the more beautiful the gem looks -
1:13 - 1:18and it is in the fact the processing
of three-dimensional forms -
1:18 - 1:21that increases their value
-
1:22 - 1:26There is a figure so small
-
1:26 - 1:31that he can split a dust particle
with his forehead -
1:31 - 1:35and step through it with his whole body.
-
1:35 - 1:37So, that's pretty small right?
-
1:37 - 1:39(Sounds of music box)
-
1:44 - 1:51In a way the artist works with remnants,
society's remnants -
1:51 - 1:54this is always the area with potential
-
1:54 - 1:58I am a thing finder and its so extreme
that every time I ... -
1:58 - 2:04Some shoes are so badly made
that they lose their labels. -
2:04 - 2:09A kind of red thing under the shoe,
in the sole -
2:09 - 2:13I have been finding them for ten years.
Each time, I pick up one like that. -
2:14 - 2:17Because I use the as stairs.
-
2:17 - 2:19When I have enough, I use them as steps.
-
2:20 - 2:26So suddenly the world is incredibly large
with regard to materials. -
2:26 - 2:29It's all about ideas.
-
2:30 - 2:34The premise right from the start has been
-
2:34 - 2:40to collect items from the world around
that are already manufactured. -
2:40 - 2:45And take them and put them
into my own contexts -
2:45 - 2:47and use them on the miniature level.
-
2:47 - 2:54It "mimes" something else,
that you don't see at first, -
2:54 - 3:00but which has it's origin
in a completely different function. -
3:01 - 3:05But this kind of disappears.
It is dissolved. -
3:06 - 3:11And of course there are also things
that already have an age -- -
3:11 - 3:18a certain ambiance that matches
this poetic universe, -
3:18 - 3:24because I aim to generate images
-
3:24 - 3:29that may encourage you
to linger a while in them -
3:30 - 3:40and materials that have a certain age
radiate a restraint -- -
3:40 - 3:43and a value that I feel is poetic.
-
3:43 - 3:45(Sounds of music box)
-
3:52 - 3:53We are very stimulated.
-
3:53 - 3:57I think we're living in what's called
"the great social epoch". -
3:57 - 3:59We exchange a lot.
-
4:00 - 4:06The downside is perhaps
that things don't have time to mature. -
4:06 - 4:11We are very quick to take action
in all kinds of context. -
4:11 - 4:16But art is a space reserved
for a certain spontaneity. -
4:17 - 4:25A place where you don't have answers
and don't need to produce. -
4:25 - 4:28You go back to just being.
-
4:28 - 4:33As they say, we are
"human doings" or "human beings" -
4:33 - 4:37I feel attracted to the idea
of just being allowed to be. -
4:37 - 4:39I am interested in presence.
-
4:39 - 4:44And that is perhaps found more
in stillness and reflection. -
4:45 - 4:48One can speak of ...
without sounding pathetic -- -
4:48 - 4:52there is actually something called
"the artist's great loneliness". -
4:53 - 4:55(Ticking of clocks)
-
4:55 - 4:57And it suits me just fine,
-
4:58 - 5:01that this place here dilapidated and worn.
-
5:01 - 5:05It seems so much more relaxed to me,
-
5:06 - 5:09this is definitely my oasis.
-
5:09 - 5:13(Ticking of clocks)
