Madrid's air | Nerea Calvillo | TEDxMadrid
-
0:10 - 0:13Historically, Madrid’s air
has been represented by its skies, -
0:13 - 0:16from Velázquez, who took
the entire royal court outdoors -
0:16 - 0:18to paint their portrait,
-
0:18 - 0:22to photography nuts who post
their Madrid photos on Flickr. -
0:22 - 0:27This is the first image that shows up
when you search "Madrid" on Flickr. -
0:28 - 0:32Still, even if this is how
the Madrid sky appears -
0:32 - 0:35in our collective imagination,
-
0:35 - 0:37on a day-to-day basis,
-
0:37 - 0:38Madrid's sky looks like this
-
0:38 - 0:40and like this
-
0:40 - 0:41and like this.
-
0:41 - 0:44And only those photos you see
in the newspapers now and then, -
0:44 - 0:47can actually reveal the bad
quality of air in Madrid. -
0:49 - 0:50It makes you wonder:
-
0:50 - 0:53Why do we know so little
about something like air quality? -
0:53 - 0:55And the answer is very simple -
-
0:55 - 0:57because it's microscopic
and we don't see it. -
0:58 - 1:01Thus, the "In The Air" project was born,
-
1:01 - 1:05with the intention of giving
legitimacy to a system -
1:05 - 1:07that forms a part of our city;
-
1:07 - 1:09a system with which we interact,
-
1:09 - 1:11that runs our daily lives,
-
1:11 - 1:14and that has a very close
relationship with our bodies. -
1:14 - 1:17The project is a collective effort,
-
1:17 - 1:22built by a fantastic team
of multidisciplinary collaborators -
1:22 - 1:24from all over the world,
-
1:24 - 1:27and developed through workshops,
-
1:27 - 1:31like Media Lab Prado in 2008,
the first of such events. -
1:32 - 1:34But back to the air.
-
1:34 - 1:37Allow me to present its actors:
-
1:37 - 1:41gases like CO2, nitrogen dioxide,
ozone, sulphur dioxide, -
1:41 - 1:47or suspended particulates
like rubber, leather, lead... -
1:49 - 1:52Ever since Spain
joined the European Union, -
1:52 - 1:57Madrid's city council is obligated
to inform the public about air quality. -
1:57 - 1:59This is how they presented it in 2007,
-
2:00 - 2:01and like this for 2008, 2010.
-
2:02 - 2:03But it makes you wonder:
-
2:03 - 2:08Could we find a more adequate
way to present the information, -
2:08 - 2:12so we could have a better sense
of what's going on with our air? -
2:12 - 2:15We found there were two things missing:
-
2:15 - 2:20geolocalization and the order of events.
-
2:20 - 2:25So we put together these graphic maps,
which are basically air landscapes. -
2:26 - 2:29You can see them in real time
on an interactive web page, -
2:29 - 2:32where you can view
all the different components -
2:32 - 2:34and navigate the city
from below its airstream. -
2:35 - 2:40We can also see what effects
our actions have on air quality, -
2:40 - 2:42on both a city scale
-
2:43 - 2:44and also per 100,000 inhabitants.
-
2:45 - 2:49We can also identify
where emissions are coming from, -
2:49 - 2:52and how they might affect our health.
-
2:53 - 2:55It's been interesting
to read through the data. -
2:55 - 2:59It's allowed us to see
that there's a very close relationship -
2:59 - 3:03between what happens in the city,
our own everyday actions, -
3:03 - 3:05and what's produced in the air -
-
3:05 - 3:07what we produce, collectively, in the air.
-
3:07 - 3:11For example, in the spectacular case
of a New Year's Eve, -
3:11 - 3:14when the particulate suspension levels
dramatically increase. -
3:14 - 3:16The same happens during soccer games
in Bernabéu Stadium. -
3:17 - 3:20The project also examines
-
3:20 - 3:23how the way in which we transfer
this information to public spaces -
3:23 - 3:25can produce different reactions
-
3:25 - 3:27as well as differences
in the collective dynamics -
3:27 - 3:30involved in plazas and public spaces.
-
3:31 - 3:33So we developed several prototypes.
-
3:33 - 3:37One of them was this cloud of colored mist
-
3:37 - 3:38on the facade of Media Lab Prado
-
3:38 - 3:42which represents the levels
of air pollution by pulsating. -
3:42 - 3:47This digital facade allows us to identify
minimally polluted routes. -
3:49 - 3:53There are also mobile devices
that help us navigate the city, -
3:53 - 3:57orienting us like a sort of aerial compass
-
3:58 - 4:04while transmitting in real-time,
information about the urban surroundings. -
4:07 - 4:10We're currently researching
this "public good," -
4:10 - 4:12as it's been called several times today.
-
4:12 - 4:15It's intimately linked with our bodies,
-
4:15 - 4:19and since it can impact the health
-
4:19 - 4:22of the citizens of Madrid,
-
4:22 - 4:25all of our bodies are affected by it,
-
4:26 - 4:31and by the processes of exclusion
that it will eventually produce. -
4:33 - 4:36We're also looking at what types
of visual formats are best, -
4:37 - 4:40and to what extent a visualization
can motivate, stimulate -
4:40 - 4:43or act as an intermediary
for political action, -
4:43 - 4:46on both an individual
and collective level. -
4:48 - 4:50Let's take a look at how Madrid breathes.
-
5:54 - 5:56Last inhale.
-
5:56 - 5:58Thank you very much.
-
5:59 - 6:01(Applause)

- Madrid's air | Nerea Calvillo | TEDxMadrid
- Description:
-
Nerea Calvillo is the founder of C+arquitectos, a professional studio that oversees the production of architecture, cartographical systems, research, education and curatorship. In 2008, the studio launched "In The Air," a project that proposes different formats for visualizing air quality, as a tool for civic activism. "In the Air" is made possible through collaborative workshops and academic research. In this talk, Nerea shows us how Madrid breathes through a series of fascinating visualizations.
