  • 0:34 - 0:39
I am very protecttive of the people
I am close to, like family and friends.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
And I know that I must be compassionate
    to all people,
  • 0:43 - 0:48
but I have a harder time forgiving
somebody that is harmful to one of them,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
instead of to me or to myself.
  • 0:52 - 0:57
I am not sure whether you have any
recommendations on how to deal with that.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    Dear Thay, dear Sangha,
  • 1:01 - 1:06
our friend, Chad, he feels very protective
    towards those he loves,
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    his family and his friends.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
And when someone else done something
that harms his family or his friends,
  • 1:13 - 1:19
he has a hard time practicing compassion,
    feeling compassionate towards that person.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    He would like some guidance
  • 1:22 - 1:26
on how he could be more compassionate
    in those situations.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
In fact, compassion is a kind
    of protection
  • 1:32 - 1:37
    and the most effective protection
    that you have.
  • 1:37 - 1:42
    If you don't have compassion,
you allow fear, anger to express,
  • 1:43 - 1:48
and that will draw attention to you and
    makes them afraid of you
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    and they will attack you
    because they are also afraid.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
    That is why, with compassion,
    with understanding,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    because understanding is possible.
  • 2:07 - 2:12
But when you look at the aggressive
people, you see that they suffer.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    They have violence in them,
    they have anger in them.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
They don't have much joy and compassion,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    that is why, they suffer.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
And when they suffer, they make
other people around them suffer too.
  • 2:24 - 2:29
And when we have time to look at them,
    we will understand
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    and naturally, compassion
    will arise in us.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
We are not afraid of them anymore,
we do not hate them anymore.
  • 2:37 - 2:42
In fact, we want to do something or to say
something, to help them suffer less.
  • 2:44 - 2:50
And if you know how to generate
    compassion and joy,
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    we can find skillful means
in order to help them to do the same.
  • 2:54 - 3:00
And if they are joyful and compassionate,
    they will become harmless.
  • 3:00 - 3:05
And that is the best way
    to protect ourselves.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
So, generate compassion in our own self,
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    and help to generate compassion
    in another person,
  • 3:13 - 3:18
is the best way to protect ourselves,
    to be in true security.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
