Our bodies are not an image | Mary Jelkovsky | TEDxCherryCreekWomen
-
0:35 - 0:39Four years ago, a cup of mocha
changed my life. -
0:40 - 0:44Let me take you back
to when I was just 17 years old. -
0:44 - 0:48I had just won a trophy
at a major bikini fitness competition, -
0:48 - 0:51one of the largest in the country.
-
0:51 - 0:53This was me.
-
0:54 - 0:56I prepared for this competition
for six months; -
0:56 - 0:58I worked out every single day;
-
0:58 - 1:00I dieted hardcore;
-
1:00 - 1:02and I thought that revolving
my life around fitness -
1:03 - 1:06would help fix my
poor-body image struggles, -
1:06 - 1:09but it only made things worse.
-
1:09 - 1:11While everybody was telling me
how great I looked, -
1:11 - 1:13how fit I was,
-
1:13 - 1:14how dedicated I was,
-
1:14 - 1:17my mental health was just falling apart,
-
1:17 - 1:20and I was obsessed with anything
that went in my mouth -
1:20 - 1:21that was not on my diet,
-
1:21 - 1:24even if it was just a handful of almonds.
-
1:25 - 1:26What nobody knew
-
1:26 - 1:29was that behind this perfect bikini body
-
1:29 - 1:31was a broken girl
-
1:31 - 1:34that was completely obsessed
with her weight. -
1:36 - 1:38Have you ever been in this position?
-
1:38 - 1:40Have you ever been obsessed
with your weight -
1:40 - 1:43or how your body looks in general?
-
1:43 - 1:48Unfortunately, too many of us
struggle with not liking how we look. -
1:48 - 1:51Some of us go to extremes, like I did,
-
1:51 - 1:53and some of us want
to change a few things: -
1:53 - 1:55a little tighter here,
a little smoother there, -
1:55 - 1:56a lot thinner everywhere,
-
1:56 - 1:58but not too thin of course because curves,
-
1:58 - 2:00curves are in, ladies and gentlemen,
-
2:00 - 2:03but only here and here,
but nowhere in between. -
2:03 - 2:05(Laughter)
-
2:06 - 2:09So, flash forward to a few months
after this bikini competition, -
2:09 - 2:12I get a mid afternoon text from my mom:
-
2:12 - 2:15"Want to meet for coffee at 12?" she asks.
-
2:15 - 2:17"Sure, I'll be there soon", I replied.
-
2:17 - 2:18And as I'm driving to go meet her,
-
2:18 - 2:20I get another text from her;
-
2:20 - 2:24it says: "Sitting outside.
I got you a mocha." -
2:25 - 2:28A mocha? A mocha! How could she?
-
2:28 - 2:30The calories, the sugars, the dairy!
-
2:30 - 2:32Didn't she know that I was on a diet?!
-
2:32 - 2:35I'm driving, I'm so angry,
and as I pull up to the café, -
2:35 - 2:37my mom, who's sitting outside,
she sees my crying, -
2:37 - 2:40runs over to my car door,
tries to open it, -
2:40 - 2:41but I wouldn't let her in.
-
2:41 - 2:44"No mom, I just can't believe
you'd get me a freaking mocha," -
2:44 - 2:48I screamed as I closed the door
and drove away, -
2:49 - 2:52feeling instantly ashamed
at how I just lashed out on her. -
2:54 - 2:55As I'm driving,
-
2:55 - 2:58I'm having one of those
ugly cry moments, -
2:58 - 3:00you know, it's like what Oprah refers to,
-
3:00 - 3:02when you're crying so hard
you can't breath, -
3:02 - 3:04you got snot coming out of your nose.
-
3:04 - 3:06It's not pretty like the movies!
It's really ugly. -
3:07 - 3:09That was me in that moment.
-
3:10 - 3:15And at this rock bottom,
I get another text from my mom. -
3:15 - 3:19It says this - that's the real text -
-
3:19 - 3:22[I just want you to know
that I love you very much.. -
3:22 - 3:26I am here for you anytime you need me]
-
3:27 - 3:30As I read the words
on the screen, I paused. -
3:30 - 3:32I finally stopped crying.
-
3:33 - 3:35I took a deep breath,
-
3:35 - 3:38so relieved that she had
already forgiven me. -
3:39 - 3:42And I let myself feel her love,
-
3:42 - 3:47because my mom loved me
when I couldn't love myself. -
3:49 - 3:52In this moment, I also realized
that my body image struggles -
3:52 - 3:55robbed me of so many
of life's beautiful experiences. -
3:56 - 3:59I mean, what should've been
a lovely coffee date -
3:59 - 4:01with one of my favorite people
-
4:01 - 4:03turned in to an absolute disaster
-
4:03 - 4:06because of my fears about food.
-
4:06 - 4:10My body image took away
from so much of me, -
4:10 - 4:13and I missed out on so much of my life
-
4:13 - 4:16because I was too busy hating myself.
-
4:17 - 4:20Have you ever felt like
you missed out on your life? -
4:20 - 4:22Maybe you didn't go to the pool party
-
4:22 - 4:24because you don't want
to get in a swimsuit. -
4:24 - 4:27Or if you did go, you didn't take
your clothes off to go in the water, -
4:27 - 4:29because you don't want people to see you.
-
4:29 - 4:33Or you spent the party
obsessing over the calories in the cookie -
4:33 - 4:37instead of spending it connecting
with your friends and loved ones. -
4:38 - 4:40I've been there one too many times.
-
4:40 - 4:42I mean, I missed out on the little things,
-
4:42 - 4:45like baking cookies
with my little sister - -
4:45 - 4:47she's in the audience right now.
-
4:48 - 4:53And I missed out on the big things,
like my graduation parties, -
4:54 - 4:58where I was too scared of the calories
in the cookies, so I didn't go. -
4:58 - 5:01And also my grandfather's
70th birthday party, -
5:01 - 5:04where my grandma had cooked
all of this delicious food, -
5:04 - 5:10and I refused to have a single bite
because I was on a diet. -
5:11 - 5:16And we usually use this term "body image"
quite a bit, but what does it mean? -
5:16 - 5:19We usually use "body image" to describe
how we feel about ourselves, -
5:19 - 5:20particularly our bodies,
-
5:21 - 5:24and because of rising concerns
and negative body image struggles, -
5:24 - 5:29a lot of people have tried to help
girls and women especially -
5:29 - 5:32feel more positively
about their body image. -
5:32 - 5:37This idea of body positivity
has become really popular lately. -
5:37 - 5:40"Let's all feel really good
about our bodies and how we look" - -
5:40 - 5:41which is great;
-
5:41 - 5:44it's definitely a step forward -
-
5:44 - 5:49but what if all this hyper-focus
on our body's image, -
5:49 - 5:52whether it's positive or negative,
-
5:52 - 5:57is actually what's causing
all the insecurities, discomforts -
5:57 - 6:00and lack of confidence
in our bodies in the first place? -
6:01 - 6:05I mean, we already live
in such an image driven society. -
6:05 - 6:08Somebody even called
our generation "The selfie culture." -
6:09 - 6:13So, not only do we see our own image
reflected back to us in the mirror -
6:13 - 6:15when we are getting ready in the morning,
-
6:15 - 6:18but we also see our image in a selfie -
-
6:18 - 6:19if you happen to be into that -
-
6:19 - 6:22but if not, you also see
everybody else's selfie, -
6:22 - 6:26and usually it's their perfect,
picture-perfect selfie, -
6:26 - 6:30on social media every single day.
-
6:31 - 6:34I mean, It's no wonder that 96% of women
-
6:34 - 6:38report feeling unhappy with their bodies
or wanting to change something. -
6:39 - 6:4196%!
-
6:42 - 6:4596% of us struggle with body image.
-
6:46 - 6:50But our bodies,
our bodies are not an image. -
6:51 - 6:57They're an experience,
and they're a beautiful experience. -
6:57 - 7:03So we cannot keep letting our body image
ruin our life experience. -
7:04 - 7:08That afternoon, after getting
that loving text from my mom, -
7:08 - 7:11I realized the true cause
of my obsession with my body image: -
7:11 - 7:13missing out on my life.
-
7:13 - 7:16And I also made a decision
to change my life. -
7:17 - 7:20I made a decision to not only heal
my own body image struggles -
7:20 - 7:25by actually not focusing on my image
and instead just living my life, -
7:26 - 7:28and I also made a commitment
-
7:28 - 7:33to help any women who's ever hated herself
shift her focus and change her life. -
7:34 - 7:36Actually, I have an exercise for you
-
7:36 - 7:39that is a simple three-step process
-
7:39 - 7:42that's scientifically proven
to help you do just that: -
7:42 - 7:45shift your focus and get out
of those negative thought patterns -
7:45 - 7:48anytime you're feeling
not good about yourself. -
7:49 - 7:50So the first step.
-
7:50 - 7:52First, you're going to pause -
-
7:52 - 7:54just like I did when I got this text -
-
7:54 - 7:56pause and face what you're feeling.
-
7:56 - 7:59I mean, it's so easy
to deflect and push away -
7:59 - 8:01and try to avoid the situation.
-
8:01 - 8:04How many of us stay busy
just to avoid what we're feeling? -
8:04 - 8:06So guilty.
-
8:06 - 8:07(Laughter)
-
8:07 - 8:10But the difficult thing to do is to pause.
-
8:12 - 8:13Next, breathe -
-
8:13 - 8:15and this part is really important -
-
8:15 - 8:16as you breathe,
-
8:16 - 8:20focus you energy and attention
to the area around your heart. -
8:21 - 8:24This is going to help
shift your focus from your mind, -
8:24 - 8:26from those negative thought patterns,
-
8:26 - 8:27to your heart,
-
8:27 - 8:30towards unconditional love for yourself.
-
8:31 - 8:35So as you breathe, just picture sending
all that energy to your heart space. -
8:36 - 8:41And lastly, let yourself feel the love.
-
8:41 - 8:43And notice how I said "let yourself"
-
8:43 - 8:46because a lot of us, we say,
"Just love yourself!" -
8:46 - 8:48But that's a lot easier said than done.
-
8:48 - 8:52You first have to give yourself permission
to feel your own love. -
8:52 - 8:54And give yourself some compassion.
-
8:54 - 8:56Think of at least one thing
-
8:56 - 9:00that you can appreciate or you love
about your body or yourself in general. -
9:01 - 9:04Talk to yourself as if you're
your own mom or best friend. -
9:05 - 9:10Pause, breathe,
and let yourself feel the love. -
9:11 - 9:12Actually, let's all do this together.
-
9:12 - 9:14Not to put you on the spot or anything,
-
9:14 - 9:18but wherever you're at,
just straighten up a little bit. -
9:19 - 9:21(Inhales deeply)
-
9:24 - 9:26And now pause right here with me.
-
9:28 - 9:30Take this moment for yourself.
-
9:32 - 9:33Now, take a deep breath
-
9:33 - 9:34(Inhales deeply)
-
9:35 - 9:36and as you breathe,
-
9:36 - 9:38(Exhales)
-
9:38 - 9:42picture sending all that loving energy
to this area around your heart. -
9:46 - 9:49And now let yourself feel the love,
-
9:50 - 9:55and think of one thing that you
can appreciate about yourself right now. -
9:57 - 9:59How did that feel?
-
10:01 - 10:04So the next time you don't feel
so good about yourself - -
10:04 - 10:06maybe you don't like
how you look that day, -
10:06 - 10:09or your hair is not cooperating with you,
-
10:09 - 10:12or you're just struggling
with self-worth in general - -
10:12 - 10:17remember to pause, breathe
and let yourself feel the love. -
10:17 - 10:19Because in doing so,
-
10:19 - 10:23you will turn those lowest moments
into your greatest strength. -
10:24 - 10:28In fact, I was actually preparing
for this exact talk, -
10:29 - 10:31at that same café,
-
10:31 - 10:34while happily sipping my mocha.
-
10:35 - 10:38(Applause)
- Title:
- Our bodies are not an image | Mary Jelkovsky | TEDxCherryCreekWomen
- Description:
-
In a society surrounded by pictures, videos, and social media, body-image concerns continue to be on the rise. 96% percent of women report wanting to change their body in some way which shows that this is not an individual problem of low self-esteem, but rather a collective disconnect with how we see our body-image. Girls and women especially are bombarded with images of so-called “perfect bodies” that are often unattainable without going to extreme methods of weight control. Failure to achieve this “perfect body” can cause decreased self-esteem, feelings of unworthiness, or even an eating disorder. Although many people have spoken up about the importance of positive body-image and body positivity, Mary Jelkovsky explains how this approach can be a double-edged sword. Instead, she offers an unconventional approach for healing body-image struggles, building self-confidence, and cultivating unconditional self-love. Mary Jelkovsky (known as @maryscupofteaa on social media) is a former bikini fitness model turned self-love advocate and women’s retreat host.
After recovering from an eating disorder of 8 years and healing her body, mind, and spirit, she started her online platform Mary’s Cup of Tea, to inspire women to be more confident in their bodies and love themselves unconditionally. Mary’s story has been featured in publications like Teen Vogue, Women's Health, and Self Magazine because unfortunately, so many women know what it’s like to hate their bodies. Mary is committed to changing this trend by empowering women of all shapes and sizes through her social media, online programs and worldwide self-love retreats.
Mary's biggest inspiration is her spunky, 11-year-old sister Ilana who knows how to dance like no one's watching and love with her whole heart. Mary wants Ilana to grow up in a world where women are empowered to chase their dreams without being bogged down by beauty standards.
