-
0:02 - 0:05Plan International is committed
to achieving gender equality -
0:06 - 0:08and fostering an inclusive society.
-
0:09 - 0:13We support and empower adolescents
in all their diversity, -
0:13 - 0:16regardless of their gender,
ability, ethnicity, -
0:16 - 0:18or any other identity.
-
0:19 - 0:21This includes sexual orientation,
-
0:22 - 0:23gender identity,
-
0:23 - 0:26gender expression
and sex characteristics -
0:26 - 0:28or SOGIESC for short.
-
0:28 - 0:30But what actually is SOGIESC?
-
0:31 - 0:34Let's break it down,
using the SOGIESC person. -
0:34 - 0:38This helps us understand
that each of the individual terms -
0:38 - 0:41has a different meaning and combined
-
0:41 - 0:44they make up a person's SOGIESC identity.
-
0:44 - 0:46Let's start with sexual orientation.
-
0:47 - 0:48This is shown as the heart,
-
0:49 - 0:51as it's about who you are emotionally
-
0:51 - 0:54physically and sexually attracted to.
-
0:54 - 0:57One person might be attracted to someone
-
0:57 - 0:58of a different gender to themselves.
-
0:59 - 1:02For example, a woman
who is heterosexual -
1:02 - 1:03is attracted to men.
-
1:04 - 1:07Another person might be
attracted to someone -
1:07 - 1:09of the same gender as themselves.
-
1:09 - 1:12For example, a woman
who is a lesbian -
1:12 - 1:14is attracted to other women.
-
1:15 - 1:17Yet another person might be
attracted to people -
1:17 - 1:19of more than one gender.
-
1:19 - 1:22For example, a woman
who is bisexual -
1:22 - 1:25is attracted to both men and women.
-
1:27 - 1:30Now, let's talk about gender identity.
-
1:30 - 1:32This is shown as the brain
-
1:32 - 1:36as it's about how you think
and feel about yourself and your gender. -
1:36 - 1:40Some people identify
as either a woman or a man. -
1:40 - 1:42This is a common way of thinking.
-
1:42 - 1:44But actually many people feel
-
1:45 - 1:47that they don't fit
with these two genders -
1:48 - 1:50They might feel
they are a mixture of the two -
1:51 - 1:53or are something else
that can't be clearly defined. -
1:54 - 1:56A person's gender identity
-
1:56 - 1:59might reflect the sex
that they were assigned at birth -
1:59 - 2:00or it might not.
-
2:01 - 2:03For example, a trans woman
-
2:03 - 2:05might have been described
as male at birth, -
2:06 - 2:08but now identifies as female.
-
2:09 - 2:11Now, gender expression.
-
2:11 - 2:13this involves the whole person,
-
2:13 - 2:15because it is about
the different ways -
2:16 - 2:18that you communicate
your gender identity -
2:18 - 2:19to the outside world.
-
2:20 - 2:22This could include how you dress,
-
2:22 - 2:23what haircut you have,
-
2:23 - 2:25how you act or what name you use.
-
2:26 - 2:29Finally, let's talk
about sex characteristics. -
2:29 - 2:32We show these as genitalia
because they reflect whether -
2:32 - 2:36wether someone is biologically
and physically female or male -
2:37 - 2:39as well as your external genitalia,
-
2:39 - 2:41sex characteristics include
-
2:41 - 2:45your hormones, chromosomes, body shape,
voice speech and body hair. -
2:45 - 2:47a person who is intersex
-
2:48 - 2:49is born with sex characteristics
-
2:49 - 2:52that are not completely
male or female -
2:52 - 2:54they are a combination of both
-
2:55 - 2:57so let's put all the pieces together
-
2:58 - 2:59sexual orientation is about
-
3:00 - 3:03who you are emotionally, physically
and sexually attracted to. -
3:04 - 3:06gender identity is about how you think
-
3:07 - 3:09and feel about yourself
and your gender. -
3:09 - 3:11Gender expression is about
how you communicate -
3:12 - 3:15your gender identity
to the outside world -
3:15 - 3:19and sex characteristics
are about your biology, -
3:19 - 3:22such as genitalia hormones
and body shape. -
3:22 - 3:25Each of us has a sexual orientation,
-
3:25 - 3:30gender identity, gender expression
and sex characteristics. -
3:30 - 3:34They combine to make up
a unique SOGIESC identity. -
3:35 - 3:36SOGIESC is fluid.
-
3:36 - 3:39This means that there are lots
of different options -
3:39 - 3:41with no right or wrong way to be
-
3:41 - 3:44also things can change over time.
-
3:44 - 3:48Our SOGIESC identity
combines with other factors -
3:48 - 3:50such as our age, where we live,
-
3:50 - 3:54whether we are rich or poor,
or whether we have a disability -
3:54 - 3:55to make who we are.
-
3:55 - 3:58It also affects our power in society!
-
3:59 - 4:02Sometimes people are discriminated
-
4:02 - 4:04or excluded because
of their sexual orientation, -
4:04 - 4:08gender identity, gender expression
and sex characteristics. -
4:09 - 4:13This includes people
who identify as lesbian, gay, -
4:13 - 4:16bisexual, trans, intersex
or questioning, -
4:16 - 4:19known as LGBTIQ+.
-
4:20 - 4:22We all have the right to define
-
4:23 - 4:25and be proud of
our soggiest identity -
4:26 - 4:30there is no needto stereotype
or harm people. -
4:30 - 4:31Everyone is unique.
-
4:32 - 4:34We must all recognize accept
-
4:34 - 4:36and celebrate this diversity.
