The Invisible Universe Of The Human Microbiome
-
0:05 - 0:06The next time you look in the mirror.
-
0:06 - 0:08think about this.
-
0:08 - 0:08In many ways,
-
0:08 - 0:11you're more microbe than human.
-
0:11 - 0:12There are ten times more cells
-
0:12 - 0:14from microorganisms -
-
0:14 - 0:15bacteria, viruses, fungi-
-
0:15 - 0:19than human cells in and on our bodies.
-
0:19 - 0:20And our genes are outnumbered
-
0:20 - 0:24a hundred to one by microbial genes.
-
0:24 - 0:25Scientists even have a name
-
0:25 - 0:27for all these microbial genes:
-
0:27 - 0:29the human microbiome.
-
0:30 - 0:32Now, this might make a lot of people
-
0:32 - 0:34rush for the hand sanitizer,
-
0:34 - 0:36but it turns out most
-
0:36 - 0:38of these microorganisms aren't bad,
-
0:38 - 0:40germs that will make us sick,
-
0:40 - 0:42most are good.
-
0:42 - 0:43And without these good microbes
-
0:43 - 0:45our bodies don't seem to do as well.
-
0:45 - 0:47We don't seem to be as healthy,
-
0:47 - 0:49and we actually might get sick
-
0:49 - 0:50more often.
-
0:52 - 0:53So one question is:
-
0:53 - 0:55where do our microbiomes
-
0:55 - 0:57come from in the first place?
-
0:57 - 0:58Well, like a lot of things,
-
0:58 - 0:59it starts with our mothers.
-
1:00 - 1:02As the infant passes
through the birth cannal, -
1:02 - 1:05it gets coded with microbes from the mom.
-
1:05 - 1:07These microbes may kind of
-
1:07 - 1:09seed the baby with just the right mix.
-
1:09 - 1:11Combined with bacteria in breast milk
-
1:11 - 1:13and other microbes we encounter early on,
-
1:13 - 1:16they seem to slowly take shape
-
1:16 - 1:18in our first few years of life.
-
1:19 - 1:21The overall mix of our microbes
-
1:21 - 1:23becomes very personal,
-
1:23 - 1:26sort of like a fingerprint,
or maybe a blood type. -
1:26 - 1:27But our microbes tend to resemble
-
1:27 - 1:29those of our parents and siblings.
-
1:29 - 1:33And may stay with us
for much of our lives. -
1:36 - 1:38They may also be doing
all sorts of things, -
1:38 - 1:41such as educating our immune cells,
-
1:41 - 1:42like this one.
-
1:42 - 1:43Teaching them the difference
-
1:43 - 1:45between things they should fight off
-
1:45 - 1:47–bad bugs that might make us sick-
-
1:47 - 1:49And things that aren't a threat,
-
1:49 - 1:51like our good microbes.
-
1:54 - 1:55When we are adults,
-
1:55 - 1:58microbes become our first line of defense,
-
1:58 - 2:00fighting off germs that try to invade our
-
2:00 - 2:01bodies, protecting their
-
2:01 - 2:03turf, while protecting our health.
-
2:06 - 2:07Scientists have discovered they can
-
2:07 - 2:10even spew out their own antibiotics.
-
2:16 - 2:18The types of microbes in your body
-
2:18 - 2:20vary depending exactly where they live,
-
2:20 - 2:23like different ecosystems in nature.
-
2:24 - 2:28There are wet places, like
our mouths, noses and armpits. -
2:28 - 2:31Oily places, like our scalps and backs.
-
2:31 - 2:34And dry places, like our forearms.
-
2:34 - 2:35Different species of microbes
-
2:35 - 2:38have adapted to each of these habitats.
-
2:41 - 2:43The biggest, most important
microbial habitat -
2:43 - 2:46seems to be in the gut.
-
2:46 - 2:48It's the most complex, the most diverse,
-
2:48 - 2:50and everything microbes are doing
-
2:50 - 2:52everywhere else in our bodies:
-
2:52 - 2:53fighting off infections,
-
2:53 - 2:56revving up and dampening down
our immune systems, -
2:56 - 2:57signaling cells...
-
2:57 - 3:00That's all happening
in the gut in spades. -
3:00 - 3:04They even seem to help
regulate our metabolisms. -
3:04 - 3:05How much energy we burn,
-
3:05 - 3:07and how much fat we store.
-
3:07 - 3:10So, if it's not functioning properly
for some reason -
3:10 - 3:13because of what we eat,
antibiotics we take, -
3:13 - 3:16that may actually lead
to all kinds of diseases. -
3:16 - 3:19Diseases like colon cancer, colitis,
-
3:19 - 3:22maybe even diabetes
and obesity. -
3:25 - 3:27Some scientists think one reason
-
3:27 - 3:28a lot of diseases are increasing
-
3:28 - 3:31is because we've lost key gut microbes.
-
3:31 - 3:35Our microbiomes look far
less diverse compared to those -
3:35 - 3:36compared to those of people
-
3:36 - 3:39in less developed countries
and earlier generations. -
3:39 - 3:40And remember how we get
-
3:40 - 3:42our microbiomes in the first place?
-
3:42 - 3:44From our mothers when we are born,
-
3:44 - 3:45and from breast milk?
-
3:45 - 3:47Well, some scientists think that
-
3:47 - 3:49too many babies aren't getting that,
-
3:49 - 3:50because of all the C-sections,
-
3:50 - 3:52and not enough breast feeding,
-
3:52 - 3:55plus all the antibiotics
kids get these days, -
3:55 - 3:58and our obsession with cleanliness.
-
3:58 - 4:00All this may help explain why problems
-
4:00 - 4:02like asthma and allergies,
have been soaring -
4:02 - 4:05Maybe because our microbiomes
-
4:05 - 4:06never taught our immune systems
-
4:06 - 4:09how to work the right way.
-
4:12 - 4:14Maybe swallowing good microbes probiotics
-
4:15 - 4:17could prevent and treat some diseases.
-
4:18 - 4:20So could taking prebiotics
-
4:20 - 4:22essentially food that good microbes love.
-
4:29 - 4:31We end our story with a reminder.
-
4:31 - 4:33This research is really new,
-
4:33 - 4:35we still have a lot to learn
-
4:35 - 4:36about what many of our microbes
-
4:36 - 4:37are really doing.
-
4:37 - 4:39But scientists say that
-
4:39 - 4:40it's getting clearer and clearer that
-
4:40 - 4:44the tiny organisms all over our bodies
-
4:44 - 4:47are essential to our health and happiness.
- Title:
- The Invisible Universe Of The Human Microbiome
- Description:
-
The next time you look in a mirror, think about this: In many ways you're more microbe than human. There are 10 times more cells from microorganisms like bacteria and fungi in and on our bodies than there are human cells. But these tiny compatriots are invisible to the naked eye. So we asked artist Ben Arthur to give us a guided tour of the rich universe of the human microbiome.
