Nick Cave: Thick Skin | ART21 "Exclusive"

  • 0:08 - 0:13
Cranbrook Academy of Art is where I did my
    graduate studies.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
It was a bit shocking, I think, at the beginning,
  • 0:16 - 0:20
because I was the only minority there.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    This is in 1988.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
I just considered myself another artist
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    out there amongst my peers.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
And I think it was difficult because it was
    the first time
  • 0:31 - 0:36
that I was confronted with my identity as
    a black male.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
My mother told me when I was, like,
    eight years old,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
the complexity of what I would have to deal with.
  • 0:46 - 0:51
    So knowing made me think,
"I've got to build a thick skin."
  • 0:51 - 0:55
"I've got to be able to operate in a world…"
    [LAUGHS]
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    "...that could work against me
    as opposed to for me."
  • 0:59 - 1:01
What do I do with that?
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    I have been racially profiled.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
I'm walking home with my portfolio
    from teaching.
  • 1:11 - 1:16
    I am pulled...surrounded by
    undercover cops saying,
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    "Lie down on the floor"--
  • 1:17 - 1:20
because the convenience store was robbed
    down the street.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    That has been my reality.
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    Get it together up here.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
Psychologically, I have to really get it together.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
And I just have to get quiet--
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    to put it in perspective
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    and to, sort of,
  • 1:37 - 1:41
not sort of lash out into rage.
  • 1:41 - 1:45
And if I do, lashing out for me is
    creating this.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
All of that becomes the impulse to create.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
I don't ever see the "Soundsuits" as fun.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
They really are coming from a very dark place.
  • 2:08 - 2:13
The "Soundsuits" hide gender, race, class.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
And they force you to look at the work
    without judgment.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
You know, we tend to want to categorize everything.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
We tend to want to find its place.
  • 2:28 - 2:32
How do we, sort of, be one on one with something
    that is unfamiliar?
